• Writing XML in different character encodings with Java

  I am attempting to write an XML library file that can be read again into my program. The file writer code is as follows: XMLBuilder builder = new XMLBuilder(); Document doc = builder.build(bookList); DOMImplementation impl = doc.getImplementation(); DOMImplementationLS implLS = (DOMImplementationLS) impl.getFeature("LS", "3.0"); LSSerializer ser = implLS.createLSSerializer(); String out = ser.writeToString(doc); //System.out.println(out); try{ FileWriter fstream = new FileWriter(location); BufferedWriter outwrite = new BufferedWriter(fstream); outwrite.write(out); outwrite.close(); }catch (Exception e){ } The above code does write an xml document. However, in the XML header, it is an attribute that the file is encoded in UTF-16. when i read in the file, i get the error: "content not allowed in prolog" this error does not occur when the encoding attribute is manually changed to UTF-8. I am trying to get the above code to write an XML document encoded in UTF-8, or successfully parse a UTF-16 file. the code for parsing in is DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); DocumentBuilder loader = factory.newDocumentBuilder(); Document document = loader.parse(filename); the last line returns the error.

  Let's assume that our system can perform actions, and that an action requires some parameters to do its work. I have defined the following base class for all actions (simplified for your reading pleasure): public abstract class BaseBusinessAction<TActionParameters> : where TActionParameters : IActionParameters { protected BaseBusinessAction(TActionParameters actionParameters) { if (actionParameters == null) throw new ArgumentNullException("actionParameters"); this.Parameters = actionParameters; if (!ParametersAreValid()) throw new ArgumentException("Valid parameters must be supplied", "actionParameters"); } protected TActionParameters Parameters { get; private set; } protected abstract bool ParametersAreValid(); public void CommonMethod() { ... } } Only a concrete implementation of BaseBusinessAction knows how to validate that the parameters passed to it are valid, and therefore the ParametersAreValid is an abstract function. However, I want the base class constructor to enforce that the parameters passed are always valid, so I've added a call to ParametersAreValid to the constructor and I throw an exception when the function returns false. So far so good, right? Well, no. Code analysis is telling me to "not call overridable methods in constructors" which actually makes a lot of sense because when the base class's constructor is called the child class's constructor has not yet been called, and therefore the ParametersAreValid method may not have access to some critical member variable that the child class's constructor would set. So the question is this: How do I improve this design? Do I add a Func<bool, TActionParameters> parameter to the base class constructor? If I did: public class MyAction<MyParameters> { public MyAction(MyParameters actionParameters, bool something) : base(actionParameters, ValidateIt) { this.something = something; } private bool something; public static bool ValidateIt() { return something; } } This would work because ValidateIt is static, but I don't know... • Two PickerViews in save View issue?

  I'm trying to have 2 pickerviews in the same view. It works except for two things. If one pickerview has more rows than the other the app crashes when picking an item from the pickerview with more items. Also I created an NSLog for the pickerviews and the console shows that I'm picking two items at once when in fact i'm only dealing with one pickerview. I know it sounds a bit confusing but I'm including all the code. • How do I correctly use Unity to pass a ConnectionString to my repository classes?

  I've literally just started using the Unity Application Blocks Dependency Injection library from Microsoft, and I've come unstuck. This is my IoC class that'll handle the instantiation of my concrete classes to their interface types (so I don't have to keep called Resolve on the IoC container each time I want a repository in my controller): public class IoC { public static void Intialise(UnityConfigurationSection section, string connectionString) { _connectionString = connectionString; _container = new UnityContainer(); section.Configure(_container); } private static IUnityContainer _container; private static string _connectionString; public static IMovementRepository MovementRepository { get { return _container.Resolve<IMovementRepository>(); } } } So, the idea is that from my Controller, I can just do the following: _repository = IoC.MovementRepository; I am currently getting the error: Exception is: InvalidOperationException - The type String cannot be constructed. You must configure the container to supply this value. Now, I'm assuming this is because my mapped concrete implementation requires a single string parameter for its constructor. The concrete class is as follows: public sealed class MovementRepository : Repository, IMovementRepository { public MovementRepository(string connectionString) : base(connectionString) { } } Which inherits from: public abstract class Repository { public Repository(string connectionString) { _connectionString = connectionString; } public virtual string ConnectionString { get { return _connectionString; } } private readonly string _connectionString; } Now, am I doing this the correct way? Should I not have a constructor in my concrete implementation of a loosely coupled type?   hello, i'm storing XML values to an entry in my database. Originally, i extract the xml datatype to my business logic then fill the XML data into a DataSet. I want to improve this process by loading the XML right into the T-SQL. Instead of getting the xml as string then converting it on the BL. My issue is this: each xml entry is dynamic, meaning it can be any column created by the user. Use the XmlInclude or SoapInclude attribute to specify types that are not known statically. I know that adding a [XmlInclude(typeof(C))] attribute with [XmlRoot] would solve the problem. But I want to achieve it dynamically. Because in my project class C is not known prior to loading. Class C is being loaded as a plugin, so it is not possible for me to add XmlInclude attribute there. I tried also with TypeDescriptor.AddAttributes(typeof(AList), new[] { new XmlIncludeAttribute(c.GetType()) }); before var type = typeof (AList); but no use. It is still giving the same exception. Does any one have any idea on how to achieve it?

• Can Castle.Windsor do automatic resolution of concrete types

  We are evaluating IoC containers for C# projects, and both Unity and Castle.Windsor are standing out. One thing that I like about Unity (NInject and StructureMap also do this) is that types where it is obvious how to construct them do not have to be registered with the IoC Container. Is there way to do this in Castle.Windsor? Am I being fair to Castle.Windsor to say that it does not do this? Is there a design reason to deliberately not do this, or is it an oversight, or just not seen as important or useful? I am aware of container.Register(AllTypes... in Windsor but that's not quite the same thing. It's not entirely automatic, and it's very broad. To illustrate the point, here are two NUnit tests doing the same thing via Unity and Castle.Windsor. Since calling mutex.ReleaseMutex() throws an exception if it is not acquired by me. (By acquired state I mean that the mutex is in not-signaled state when I am owning the mutex.)

Can anyone help me with it? Also, instead of namevaluecollection, which type of structure can i use?

• Multithreading and Interrupts

  I'm doing some work on the input buffers for my kernel, and I had some questions. On Dual Core machines, I know that more than one "process" can be running simultaneously. What I don't know is how the OS and the individual programs work to protect collisions in data. There are two things I'd like to know on this topic: (1) Where do interrupts occur? Are they guaranteed to occur on one core and not the other, and could this be used to make sure that real-time operations on one core were not interrupted by, say, file IO which could be handled on the other core? (I'd logically assume that the interrupts would happen on the 1st core, but is that always true, and how would you tell? Or perhaps does each core have its own settings for interrupts? Wouldn't that lead to a scenario where each core could react simultaneously to the same interrupt, possibly in different ways?) (2) How does the dual core processor handle opcode memory collision? If one core is reading an address in memory at exactly the same time that another core is writing to that same address in memory, what happens? Is an exception thrown, or is a value read? (I'd assume the write would work either way.) If a value is read, is it guaranteed to be either the old or new value at the time of the collision? I understand that programs should ideally be written to avoid these kinds of complications, but the OS certainly can't expect that, and will need to be able to handle such events without choking on itself.

• How can I run a BitchX when I don't have ssh or shell access?

  I just installed an IRC bot, B****X (Don't ask, I don't know - the real name is not censored). I did all of the configuration and chmod'ed the pl files to 755, but running it won't work. My host does not allow SSH/Shell (which is how the documentation says to runs he script), but just going to the URL usually works because of this. However, I get a 500 (Internal Server Error) error. • Getting Argument Names In Ruby Reflection

  I would like to do some fairly heavy-duty reflection in the Ruby programming language. I would like to create a function which would return the names of the arguments of various calling functions higher up the call stack (just one higher would be enough but why stop there?). I could use Kernel.caller go to the file and parse the argument list but that would be ugly and unreliable. The function that I would like would work in the following way: module A def method1( tuti, fruity) foo end def method2(bim, bam, boom) foo end def foo print caller_args[1].join(",") #the "1" mean one step up the call stack end end A.method1 #prints "tuti,fruity" A.method2 #prints "bim, bam, boom" I would not mind using ParseTree or some similar tool for this task but looking at Parsetree, it is not obvious how to use it for this purpose. Creating a C extension like this is another possibility but it would be nice if someone had already done it for me. Edit2: I can see that I'll probably need some kind of C extension. I suppose that means my question is what combination of C extension would work most easily. I don't think caller+ParseTree would be enough by themselves. As far as why I would like to do this goes, rather than saying "automatic debugging", perhaps I should say that I would like to use this functionality to do automatic checking of the calling and return conditions of functions. Say def add x, y check_positive return x + y end Where check_positive would throw an exception if x and y weren't positive (obviously, there would be more to it than that but hopefully this gives enough motivation)

• PDO bindparam not working.

  I am trying to save data into a database using PDO. All columns save correctly with the exception of one. No matter what I try, I cannot get the data to go in. myfunc($db, $data) { echo $data; // <----- Outputs my data. example: 'jim jones' $stmt = $db->prepare("CALL test(:id, :data, :ip, :expires)"); $stmt->bindParam(':id', $id, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':data', $data, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':ip', $ip, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':expires', $expires, PDO::PARAM_STR); ... } So even after verifying that the data variable in fact holds my data, the bindParam method will not bind. When I echo the data variable, I can see the data is there. It will not save though. If I copy the echo'd output of the data variable to screen and paste it into a new variable, it WILL save. I'm at this now for a couple of hours. Can someone please have a look? EDIT: I want to also mention that I have tried using bindValue() in place of bindParam() and the data for the data variable will still not save.

• How to configure outgoing connections from an SQL stored procedure?

  I am working on a .NET project which uses Microsoft SQL server. In this project, I need a CLR stored procedure (written in C#) that uses a remote web service. So, when the stored procedure is executed on the SQL server, it makes web service calls and thus sends packets to a remote location. The problem is that when executing the SP I get: "System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden." The database user has full permission, the deployed CLR assembly and SP are even marked "unsafe", I tried signing it etc., so any of that is not causing the problem. When I am executing the very same C# code, but from a simple console application instead of as a SP, it all works fine. So I started to suspect a network related problem and had a packet sniffer running when executing both the SP and the console app version. What I realized was that the packets sent out had different destination IP addresses: the console app sent the packets directly to the web service IP while the SP sent the packets to a proxy server we use in our company. Due to network policies the latter is not allowed and that explains the "403 Forbidden" exception. So my question boils down to this: How can I configure the SP/MS SQL server to NOT use that proxy? I want it to send the packets directly to the web service IP, just like the test console app. (again, the C# code is the same , so it's not a programming matter). I've disabled all proxy settings in Internet Explorer in case the SQL server inherits these settings or something. However, no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Best regards, Peter

• JConsole does not connect when a program is waiting for a console input

  Hi, I have a problem similar to the one mentioned here. I have a program which launches a selenium browser and refreshes it every 2 seconds. My idea here was to monitor the memory usage of my application as the page is being hit. This console program does a "System.in.read" and when a user presses enter key, this stops the browser refresh thread. I run the program and it runs as I would expect it to. But when I fire jconsole and attach it to the process, it looks like jconsole waits forever to attach. This is because of the "System.in.read", apparently as shown in the JConsole source. In my code it makes perfect sense for me to terminte the browser when user presses something so is there any alternative available at all ? • TypeError: Error #1009 - (Null reference error) With Flash.

  I am not an expert in flash, but i do work with AS and tweak Flash projects , though not having deep expertise in it. Currently i need to revamp a flash website done by one another guy, and the code base given to me, upon execution is throwing the following error. "--- TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at NewSite_fla::MainTimeline/__setProp_ContactOutP1_ContactOut_Contents_0() at NewSite_fla::MainTimeline/frame1() --" The structure of the project is like, it has the different sections split into different movie clips. There is no single main timeline, but click actions on different areas of seperate movie clips will take them between one another. All the AS logic of event handling are written inline in FLA , no seperate Document class exists. Preloader Movie clip is the first one getting loaded. As i understood the error is getting thrown initially itself, and it is not happening due to any Action script logic written inline, because it is throwing error even before hitting the first inline AS code. I am not able to figure Out what exactly it causing the problem, or where to resolve it. • What is the prefered or accepted method for testing proxy settings?

  I have a lot of trouble with the internet connectivity in the program I am working on and it all seems to spawn from some issue with the proxy settings. Most of the issues at this point are fixed, but the issue I am having now is that my method of testing the proxy settings makes some users wait for long periods of time. Here is what I do: System.Net.WebClient webClnt = new System.Net.WebClient(); webClnt.Proxy = proxy; webClnt.Credentials = proxy.Credentials; byte[] tempBytes; try { tempBytes = webClnt.DownloadData(url.Address); } catch { //Invalid proxy settings //Code to handle the exception goes here } This is the only way that I've found to test if the proxy settings are correct. I tried making a web service call to our web service, but no proxy settings are needed when making the call. It will work even if I have bogus proxy settings. The above method, though, has no timeout member that I can set that I can find and I use the DownloadData as opposed to the DownloadDataAsync because I need to wait til the method is done so that I can know if the settings are correct before continuing on in the program. Any suggestions on a better method or a work around for this method is appreciated. Mike
