• How to set an old view? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to revert to GNOME Classic? is it possible to change general view in Ubuntu 12.04 so it was like in Ubuntu 10.04? I really liked old one and really don't like new one. Things that are annoying me: menu on the left with large icons lack of workspaces icons in right bottom corner lack of menu: Applications, Places, System in left top corner menu like: file | edit | view | help resize and red cross is available in all applications at the very top of the pulpit, unless at the very top of the application window I know it may sound crazy, but that's all me, don't like changes despite that I know they are often good. I would be very grateful for any help. I really want old view (exactly like here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/UbuntuMaverickDesktop.png) back. By the way, if I installed Ubuntu 12.04 by WUBI from Windows level on separated partition, then what is the easiest way to uninstall it? Can I simply format this partition? I'm wondering because I don't know if it is safe, what about boot loader etc.

• UFW blocking random packets on 443

  All, I have UFW setup to allow traffic on port 443. It works as expected, though I have a large amount of UFW Block log entries. To Action From -- ------ ---- 80 ALLOW Anywhere 443 ALLOW Anywhere 22222 ALLOW Anywhere 80 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 443 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 22222 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) However in my syslog file I see this: [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=XXX SRC=<foreignip> DST=<serverip> LEN=40 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=116 ID=22025 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=49622 DPT=443 WINDOW=0 RES=0x00 ACK RST URGP=0 About 30 or so seconds later pound (which I'm using for SSL decryption and port redirection) throws a connection timed out messsage. I'm assuming this is because UFW is blocking the packet. I'm at a loss as to an explination. Could the packet be malformed or something, is this normal? Edit - I have since changed the /etc/defaults/ufw and set ipv6=no, so the v6 rules are no longer in the mix. The server is still showing the block / connection timed out behavior though. • Can you help diagnose why this laptop running ubantu has crashed and seemingly died

  Love any suggestions you have to this problem. My laptop had Window Vista on previously (sorry). Something went wrong, I can't remember, and I tried to reinstall but couldn't, installed a replacement second hand HD, and installed Ubantu instead. It worked ok for a little while, before crashing. I ended up reloading Ubantu three times. It works for a while after (say 3-5 hrs of domestic web browsing), and then crashes. When I turn it on now, it comes up with some options to restart in safe mode, run tests and so on. I can't get it to start normally. I'm not going to re-install again. Below are screen shots of what happens when I follow some of these test options. These screen shots mean nothing to me. Any ideas? • Enable System Beep in Ubuntu

  I have tried and tried to get the system beep working, but with no success. I have selected System--Sound--System Beep--Enable Audible Beep (from the Gnome Desktop) I have tried from a Terminal window Edit--General Tab--Selecting terminal bell checkbox I have tried entering modprobe pcspkr at the command line. Trying echo -e '\a' or using the beep application - Nothing works! I know my hardware speaker works, because if on startup the battery is low it will beep. Update: It is a laptop computer. It is an IBM Thinkpad, iSeries. I did look at the modprobe blacklist, and pcspkr was not listed.

• remastering knoppix: which version and what method should i use

  I'd like to remaster knoppix (mainly add and configure some software). I downloaded newest version (KNOPPIX-ADRIANE_V6.2CD-2009-11-18-EN.iso) but later i read that it has some other window manager as default, not kde... and i want to have kde on my remaster. Is kde included on that iso but it's not default or it's not included at all? If it's not there what knoppix version should i get for my remaster? My other question... I've seen some remastering scripts (with menus, etc) on knoppix forums, do any of these works with version i have? Or with version i should have if i need kde?

• Laptop is super slow on network

  So on our network we have a bunch of wireless macs and window Operating laptops, we have a network setup with 802.11g,b,n. All the laptops seem fine except one which is only getting speeds of 54Mb. I have changed the encryption from AES to TKIP and reset the connection, i have updated the drivers, tried plugging it into the LAN and still same slow speed. Apparently the laptop with the slow speed is fine on other networks. I don't know what to do, can anyone help me?

• How do I keep a 3D model on the screen in OpenGL?

  I'm trying to keep a 3D model on the screen by placing my glDrawElement functions inside the draw function with the declarations at the top of .cpp. When I render the model, the model attaches it self to the current vertex buffer object. This is because my whole graphical user interface is in 2D quads except the window frame. Is there a way to avoid this from happening? or any common causes of this? • Why does OS X automatically logout my user?

  I have a new MacBook Air set up with filevault. In the Security preference pane I have "Require password 1 hour after sleep or screen saver begins" enabled, but the "Logout after 60 minutes of inactivity" is disabled. When I leave the computer on overnight I manually lock the screen (from the Keychain status menu bar, which I enabled via the Keychain Access preferences). Alas, in the morning I find that instead of a locked screen I see the login window, after my user was logged out with all applications terminated... (e.g. Firefox thinks it previously crashed when I launch it). This type of behavior only started after I enabled Filevault. Why is this happening? How do I prevent such auto-logout?

• problem with MySQL installation : template configuration file cannot be found

  Trying to install MySQL onto the Windows XP machine. While going through the installation steps (in the "MySQL Server Instance Config. Wizard"), I get to a point where it the window reads: MySQL Server Instance Configuration (bold header) Choose the configuration for the server instance. Ready to execute... o Prepare configuration o Write configuration file o Start service o Apply security settings (this line is greyed out) Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. [ Back ] [ Execute ] [ Cancel ] So I press execute, and then a red X appears in the second step: Write configuration file and at the bottom, where it originally said: Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. It now says: The template configuration file cannot be found at C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin\my-template.cnf I'm unsure what it means, but I canceled the config wizard and looked in the directory that had been created (C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0). • Issue with image lightbox and enlargement / Jquery Mobile

  I'm working on a redesign of my weather website using Jquery Mobile. I have it set up so that you drill down through a series of content containers to get to the weather info (each group of info opens in a dialog display). Everything's worked well, but I've run into an issue with my images. I have them sized so that they fit a mobile device's screen nicely, but because of that, when you look at them in a desktop browser, you can't really make out what the image is. I've tried several image lightbox / enlargement solutions, but for some reason, none of them have worked. Either nothing happens or the images open in a new window. I thought that this might be caused by Jquery Mobile somehow overwriting the scripts and css of the lightbox / enlargements I've tried. I'm not completely sure though that this is the case, and if it is, how I can get around it to be able to enlarge the images to their original size, preferably onclick. • How to identify process that's sending error messages to terminal?

  The following error message occasionally appears in my terminal: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory ...which is pretty annoying. I have searched online for solutions to this error, without success. Is there any way to at least identify the process responsible for sending these error messages to my terminal? EDIT: Let me clarify that, as far as I can tell, these error messages appear "out of the blue". In fact, they appear asynchronously with respect to my interactions with the terminal (more often than not see them for the first time when I return to a terminal window that has been unattended for some time). I'm sure there's a definite, deterministic cause for these messages, but it is not one that I can readily identify. In short, I have not noticed any pattern or regularity to their occurrence. In particular, in my case their occurrence has nothing to do with running mplayer, or any other video playback program. (Please my earlier post about it here.) For one thing, the machine in question is a work machine, and I rarely watch any videos with it. In the very few instances in which I've watched a video on this machine I've used VLC, not mplayer, and these errors never appeared in these rare occasions that I used VLC.

  Dreaded SQLs We used to think that a SQL statement without a where clause is only dangerous right since running that on a server TSQL is just going to impact the entire table like waving the magic wand. For that reason we should cultivate the habit first to write the statement as select and then to modify the select portion as update. Within the T-SQL Window, I would normally prefer the following first: select * from employee where empid in (4,5) and then once I am satisfied with the results, I would go ahead with the following change: --select * delete from employee where empid in (4,5) Today I just discovered another coding horror. This would typically be applicable in a stored procedure and with respect to variable nomenclature. It is always desirable to have a suitable nomenclature for parameters distinct from the column names and internal variables. This would help quicker debugging of the stored procedures besides enhancing the readability. Else in a quick bout of enthusiasm a statement like   if (@CustomerID = @CustomerID) [when the latter is intended to denote the column name and there is a superflous @ prepended], zeroing in on the problem would be little tricky. Had there been a still powerful nomenclature rules then debugging would have been more straight-forward and simpler right?

• Windows 8.1 backlight turns off

  This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen. I have an HP Elitebook 8460p and recently updated my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Now when I have certain windows open and focused (it's always different, sometimes it's chrome, sometimes it's the control-panel and so on, there is no clear pattern) the backlight of the screen is completely turned off - when I take a torch and point it to the screen or hold it to a bright-light source I can see there is still a picture there you can even work (or better said you cuold if you'd see anything). When I tab to certain other windows the screen goes back to normal back light - I can then tab back to the other window and the backlight will be turned off again. I have no idea what's going on and also no idea what information you need. The display-adapter I got is the AMD Radeon HD 6400M - I tried updating to the newest driver but that didn't help.   I'd like to change the title of a terminal window during a long running command (for example: git svn fetch) with values greped from the output, whilst still writing to standard output. Is this possible using named pipes or tee and xargs? • Can I fork a copy command on ReadyNAS SSH?

  I have a ReadyNAS 102 with a couple of USB drives attached. There were times I wanted to copy files between volumes. Unfortunately I have also accidentally cut off copying process by accidentally closing off the SSH sessions. Is it possible for me to fork a cp or mv process on SSH? As it currently stands when I close the SSH session, be it by accidentally closing the terminal window or closing my laptop screen and putting it to sleep, the copy process stops. Can I do something like cp ~/blah /some/other/path & and have the process keep running to completion in the background even if the SSH session is terminated?

• Time tracking similar to Paymo Plus on Debian

  PaymoPlus is free (closed source but no fees) PaymoPlus sits in my System Tray all day, and records every window/tab I open I would like to know if a similar app exists for Debian. Paymo for Windows/Mac has the additional sweet feature of being able to drag and drop working windows/tabs and the time spent into the tasks, but one can live without this. I would at least need to know which tasks got how much time in a 'sum total' calculation so I can enter that time into my Paymo reporting. Any ideas? Paymo does have a desktop widget for Linux but it is a dumb (non-sentient) manual time entry tool, not like Paymo Plus automatically recording everything being done.

• user profile cannot be loaded in Windows 7

  so I wake up this morning and my mother drops the Dell laptop. She starts it up and no desktop icons appear. I take a look (mind you I'm not totally awake yet), go to start menu, click a button (I forgot which one) and a window box pops up saying something a bout the hardrive (I think it might have said cannot be located) she's crying right now and waiting until 10 to take it to bestbuy. she wont let me touch the dell either. could this be because of the drop or from torrents (which never was a problem)? please help.

• Awesome and LXDE desktop managers messed up KDE

  I saw a desktop manager named "Awesome" earlier on Google+, and thought I'd give it a try. In short, I didn't like it, but it got me wondering what other desktops were like, which I hadn't tried. The first one to come to mind was LXDE. I installed that, and tried it. I wasn't a big fan, so I just went to log back into KDE. Only, when I log in, everything is screwy. My theme is weird (although, according to system settings, it is still the same). All the categories and application short cuts in the KMenu are gone, except my favorites, which are now renamed with the "short name", it seems. I know these things are global resources, so it is very likely that one of these Window Managers screwed it up, but I need it fixed. Actually, it seems that after restarting the theme problem fixed itself, but the KMenu items disappearing is still a problem. Does anyone know where these items are stored? (I know they are are just .desktop files somewhere, IIRC, but I don't remember where they are usually stored so I can see if they are still there). I'm hoping it's just a matter of a broken link or something somewhere, not deleted shortcuts... :/ In summary: Any ideas on what caused this? Do you know how to fix the KMenu, or at least where the .desktop shortcuts are stored for the KMenu so I can see if they still exist (crosses fingers).

• What causes random clicking/navigation sound while PC is idle?

  On my Dell D630 laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3, I randomly hear the "Windows Navigation Start.wav" played. This happens even if the only application active on the PC at the time is Microsoft Outlook and no one is touching the keyboard or touchpad. The start navigation sound IS enabled for Internet Explorer (I have IE 7 installed), but it is not running (no window open, anyway). The clicks are rapid, as if being executed automatically by a script or process, and they always come in threes: "click-click, click". I don't see any changes on the display and I don't know how to figure out what's running that could cause this. I have tried to leave Windows Task Manager open in the hope that I'll see a process name jump to the top of the list briefly, but it doesn't happen that often and I guess I'm not quick enough. The PC is slower than I think it should be, but System Idle Process is at 96 - 99 during the event, and for most of the time when I'm not actually using the machine. Any ideas?

• teamviewer display is slow to refresh

  I'm using teamviewer from time to time to connect my portable computer with my desktop computer when I need to check on something (personal use). One of the main things I've been noticing is that it is quite slow transfering the screen updates that keep happening. This happens more frequently when I'm moving full windows or when I open a window or when watching a small movie clip. I've tested the lowest maximum p2p speed I ever got in the last week between both and it is the desktop's upload speed of 6MB/s with the ping of 40ms (usually ~15 ms). With this I was expecting to have very sharp image and fast transfer speeds which is not what is happening. Just to clarify, both computer's individual core's CPU is not reaching its peak (25%) while teamviewer is active, so the encryption and decryption is not the cause. Why my connection between both computers so slow?

  I want to make a bootable USB stick. I run the UUI. I see the instructions on this site: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows Step 1 says: Select "Ubuntu Desktop Edition" from the dropdown list Okay, so the actual title of the drop down box is: Select a "Linux Distribution" from the dropdown to put on your USB I am pretty new to computers. 67 years old. Live alone. Bought my first computer 3 months ago. So I will have to assume that when the instructions say "Ubuntu Desktop Edition", that means the same thing as "Linux Distribution". Okay, No big leap there. So far, so good . . . . . . . So I pick the very first selection: Ubuntu 13.10 Desktop i386 I'm not sure why there are so many choices, but I'm guessing I'm pretty safe with the first one. It's for a Toshiba Satellite laptop 64 bit Windows 7. Okay, now for step 2: The instructions say: Click 'Browse' and open the downloaded ISO file. The message in the window just before the "Browse" button says: Browse to your ubuntu-13.10*desktop*i386.iso -- Okay, so where's that file? So I click "Browse" and start looking for that file. It is nowhere to be found. So where the heck is it?

• Script errors when run by launchd at startup, but not when run in Terminal

  I'm attempting to create a RAM disk that loads the previous contents when the system starts up, and every six hours writes the contents to a disk image. Currently, when you run the script from the terminal ("sudo bash LogToRAM.sh") everything works fine. But when run from launchd during startup, it doesn't work. Here's the lines from the log; the first line just gives some idea as to where in the boot process we are: SecurityAgent[202] Showing Login Window com.mechcozmo.LogToRAM[51] + /Developer/usr/bin/SetFile -a V /Volumes/LogfileRAMdisk com.mechcozmo.LogToRAM[51] ERROR: File Not Found. (-43) on file: /Volumes/LogfileRAMdisk com.mechcozmo.LogToRAM[51] + /usr/sbin/asr -source '/Library/Application Support/LogToRAM/RAMdisk_store.dmg' -target /Volumes/LogfileRAMdisk/ -noverify Here is the script and plist file in question. Note that 'set -vx' is up at the top of the script; it give a lot of information about what is happening in the script. My current theory is that the /Volumes directory does not exist at this stage of the boot process, but that seems unlikely to be honest.

• virtual box strectch to fit resolution

  Hey guys I have a really annoying problem, that I hope someone has figured out. I just installed ubuntu on virtual box and installed the guest additions so everything was great. I had a resolution that stretched across my screen from left to right and the only virtual box components that were visible were the windows vista title bar : minimize/exit/maximize buttons and virtual box controls at the bottom. Now all of a sudden now that I have installed the ubuntu 170mb of automatic updates, I see vertical and horizontal scroll bars that are part of virtual box and the ubuntu resolution will not stretch across my screen anymore. What I want is a ubuntu resolution that will stretch to fit the maximized window of virtual box, and remove the scroll bars. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it.
