• How can my team avoid frequent errors after refactoring?

  to give you a little background: I work for a company with roughly twelve Ruby on Rails developers (+/- interns). Remote work is common. Our product is made out of two parts: a rather fat core, and thin up to big customer projects built upon it. Customer projects usually expand the core. Overwriting of key features does not happen. I might add that the core has some rather bad parts that are in urgent need of refactorings. There are specs, but mostly for the customer projects. The worst part of the core are untested (as it should be...). The developers are split into two teams, working with one or two PO for each sprint. Usually, one customer project is strictly associated with one of the teams and POs. Now our problem: Rather frequently, we break each others stuff. Some one from Team A expands or refactors the core feature Y, causing unexpected errors for one of Team B's customer projects. Mostly, the changes are not announced over the teams, so the bugs hit almost always unexpected. Team B, including the PO, thought about feature Y to be stable and did not test it before releasing, unaware of the changes. How to get rid of those problems? What kind of 'announcement technique' can you recommend me?

• Web dev/programmer with 4.5 yrs experience. Better for career: self-study or master's degree? [closed]

  I'm a 28 year-old web developer/programmer with 4.5 years of experience, and I'm looking to jump-start my career. I'm trying to decide between self-study and a 1-year master's program in CS at a top school. I'm currently making 65K in a high cost-of-living area that is NOT a hot spot for technology firms. I code almost exclusively in Ruby/Rails, PHP/CodeIgniter, SQL, and JavaScript. I've slowly gained proficiency with Git. Roughly half the time I am architecting/coding, and half the time I am pounding out HTML/CSS for static brochureware sites. I'd like to make more more money while doing more challenging/interesting work, but I don't know where to start. I have an excellent academic record (math major with many CS credits, 3.9+ GPA), GRE scores, and recommendations, so I am confident that I could be admitted to a great CS master's program. On the other hand, there is the tuition and opportunity cost to consider. I feel like there are a number of practical languages/tools/skills worth knowing that I could teach myself - shell scripting, .NET, Python, Node.js, MongoDB, natural language processing techniques, etc. That said, it's one thing to read about a subject and another thing to have experience with it, which structured coursework provides. So, on to the concrete questions: What programming skills/knowledge should I develop to increase my earning potential and make me competitive for more interesting jobs? Will a master's degree in CS from a top school help me develop the above skills/knowledge, and if so, is it preferable to self-study (possibly for other reasons, e.g., the degree's value as a credential)?

• Identity in .NET 4.5&ndash;Part 3: (Breaking) changes

  I recently started porting a private build of Thinktecture.IdentityModel to .NET 4.5 and noticed a number of changes. The good news is that I can delete large parts of my library because many features are now in the box. Along the way I found some other nice additions. ClaimsIdentity now has methods to query the claims collection, e.g. HasClaim(), FindFirst(), FindAll(). ClaimsPrincipal has those methods as well. But they work across all contained identities. Nice! ClaimsPrincipal.Current retrieves the ClaimsPrincipal from Thread.CurrentPrincipal. Combined with the above changes, no casting necessary anymore. SecurityTokenHandler now has read and write methods that work directly with strings. This makes it much easier to deal with non-XML tokens like SWT or JWT. A new session security token handler that uses the ASP.NET machine key to protect the cookie. This makes it easier to get started in web farm scenarios. No need for a custom service host factory or the federation behavior anymore. WCF can be switched into “WIF mode” with the useIdentityConfiguration switch (odd name though). Tooling has become better and the new test STS makes it very easy to get started. On the other hand – and that was kind of expected – to bring claims into the core framework, there are also some breaking changes for WIF code. If you want to migrate (and I would recommend that), most changes to your code are mechanical. The following is a brain dump of the changes I encountered. Assembly Microsoft.IdentityModel is gone. The new functionality is now in mscorlib, System.IdentityModel(.Services) and System.ServiceModel. All the namespaces have changed as well. No IClaimsPrincipal and IClaimsIdentity anymore. Configuration section has been split into <system.identityModel /> and <system.identityModel.services />. WCF configuration story has changed as well. Claim.ClaimType is now Claim.Type. ClaimCollection is now IEnumerable<Claim>. IsSessionMode is now IsReferenceMode. Bootstrap token handling is different now. ClaimsPrincipalHttpModule is gone. This is not really needed anymore, apart from maybe claims transformation (see here). Various factory methods on ClaimsPrincipal are gone (e.g. ClaimsPrincipal.CreateFromIdentity()). SecurityTokenHandler.ValidateToken now returns a ReadOnlyCollection<ClaimsIdentity>. Some lower level helper classes are gone or internal now (e.g. KeyGenerator). The WCF WS-Trust bindings are gone. I think this is a pity. They were *really* useful when doing work with WSTrustChannelFactory. Since WIF is part of the Windows operating system and also supported in future versions of .NET, there is no urgent need to migrate to the 4.5 claims model. But obviously, going forward, at some point you want to make the move.

• Where is the best place to teach myself a language, and which one?

  Hello, I do not know any programming languages at all. I will self teach myself and need to know the best place to do so where I can learn from a most basic level. Where is a great place to begin learning a language? What language is best to learn first? Is it silly to learn Ruby first? Here, I came across someone saying that learning some of the higher languages can make you 'lazy' if you learn them first. Like Ruby amongst others. For my first language, my husband is advising me to learn Ruby (for his own personal interests). However, I need some independent advice of how to get started and what language I should learn first. I will eventually learn Ruby and then Rails. Four months ago, my husband ordered a text of objective C because he thought he would take it on. I flipped through and it was clearly starting at a place more advanced than where I am coming from. I have dabbled with a Ruby tutorial and I don't get it. I get what I am putting in is what I get, but I don't understand what is leading up to that. I need to know ALL the rules first. I then looked up computer languages and stared researching binary code which helped a lot, but not where I want to start. I don't have a lot of time right now in my life (with four kids) to go back that far. If I were going to school, that would be different. Any advice you could give is most welcomed.

• The Increasing Focus on Architecture

  If you follow my updates on Twitter or on the OTN ArchBeat page on Facebook you have probably noticed that I'm a regular reader of Joe McKendrick's SOA blog on ZDNet. Usually I'm content to simply share a link on my social networks when I find one of McKendrick's posts interesting. But with a recent post, In the cloud era, let's start calling IT what it is: 'Innovation Team', McKendrick hit on a point that warrants more than a quick link: "IT is no longer just a department full of people who code, build and maintain systems. IT is the business partner that plans and strategizes what types of technology solutions the business needs to move forward." Of course, what McKendrick is describing is an increased focus on architecture. Assuming that McKendrick's assessment is correct — and I do — that expanding focus, from coding, building, and maintaining systems to planning and strategizing technology solutions that serve the business, isn't limited to the organizational level. The individual roles within the IT organization will also have to shift to a more broadly architectural mindset. McKendrick's post references Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger's assessment of cloud computing as a critical "third model" of computing to emerge in the 50-year history of Information Technology. As computing itself evolves, the underlying roles that make computing possible must evolve accordingly. That evolution will be defined by an increased focus on architecture.

• How often do you look for code examples?

  I am a comp sci student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app dev and now I have switched to web dev and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app dev, really) I reference other code wayyyy too much. I constantly google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I was wondering how often you guys reference other code and does it just boil down to a lack of memorization of intricate tasks on my part? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... tl;dr: I google for code examples for basically ALL semi advanced/advanced functionality, how to fix this and do you do as well?

• What strategy should be employed to access Facebook data offline?

  I'm working on a project similar to Klout which provides detail about how you influence other people and who influenced you. We'll be fetching data from few social networking sites (i.e linked in, facebook, twitter etc) to analyze how users interacts with one another. For that we need to parse the data and store it in db and have to analyze it so that strength of relation of two user can be decided. We'll be accessing data offline as well to provide them with accurate results. If we consider facebook activities, we need to have access to Facebook users' news feed, wall data which includes likes,comments,shares etc. To decide how one user influence other, we'll store all the data and analyze it. I need suggestions on what steps need to be taken for great performance. We'll be using ASP.Net(C#) Web forms, SQL Server, jQuery. Main concern is parsing of data, it's storage and retrieval with least overhead. For that I've summarized few points as below : Should we switch over to document-oriented database, like MongoDB or RavenDB for the whole app or part of it even though none of team member have experience with them? Should we use SQL Server Analysis service? Is there any other library than Json.NET for parsing data? Is it advisable to use any C# library over FQL + GET Request ? I've tried to provide as much info as possible. Please share your views for the same.

• Site experiencing low traffic volume between 8AM and 4PM BST

  There may be no definitive answer to this question but I thought peer review of the problem might stimulate some ideas on the topic. We have a boutique sales site that is experiencing low volumes of traffic (both UK and international) between 8AM and 4PM BST. This seems sort of strange since our target audience for the site is UK based, and this would seem to be when people are awake and online. We are in contact with another boutique site in the same sector who don't experience this issue, so it seems kinda strange. Later on in the day we are getting traffic from the UK, as well as a fair amount of international traffic, so I'm at a loss to figure this one out. The site is fairly well optimised including:- sitemap.xml Proper caching policies across the board google merchant dublin core microdata html5 pretty urls meta and content are reviewed as an ongoing concern we have decent sitelinks for direct queries thru google on the site name a decent amount of inbound links FB, Twitter, Google +1 Google maps listing [verified] site has been selling for ~4 months and is getting ~250 users per day. So I'm not entirely sure how to explain the mid day dip in our figures.... Any ideas at all would be useful. Cheers all!

• What precaution should I take to hire online freelancer designers? [on hold]

  For quite some time my company is super busy with our apps, and a few days ago someone contacted me by email offering his services to help me as a graphic designer. He has a fair price, a flickr portfolio (with great stuff but not popular at all), same on Twitter. I was really considering in hiring him for some specific service, but the question is... what precaution should I take when hiring someone I have no idea who is? I can't even be sure I have his real name and his real country. How do I make a contract? How do I pay? How do I know he will not sue us after the graphics reach the App Store asking for more money? And of course, how do I know he will actually do the service and not steal from some stock service? Am I a bit paranoiac or is this a common deal with graphics designers? PS: if someone asks I can provide his flickr, but I think this is a general question and not specific for this designer.

  Here are the notes for today’s release: Added a progress indicator when saving issues. Added support for viewing CodePlex RSS feeds in Chrome. Deployed several bug fixes: Fixed an issue where the back button on Internet Explorer was not working as intended when browsing code. Fixed an issue where long commit comments would push the source control info box outside of the boundaries of the page. Fixed an issue where Internet Explorer users were not able to widen the frame of the source code browser until a file was selected. Fixed an issue where opening a source code file directly from a URL in Internet Explorer would cause the source code tree to be collapsed. Fixed an issue where adding a code snippet with long lines of text to a discussion thread using Internet Explorer would needlessly display a vertical scrollbar, limiting the amount of code visible. Fixed an issue where tabbing through some links would render them invisible. We deprecated support for embedding PreEmptive analytics statistics on the project statistics page. • Multiple Zend application code organisation

  For the past year I have been working on a series of applications all based on the Zend framework and centered on a complex business logic that all applications must have access to even if they don't use all (easier than having multiple library folders for each application as they are all linked together with a common center). Without going into much detail about what the project is specifically about, I am looking for some input (as I am working on the project alone) on how I have "grouped" my code. I have tried to split it all up in such a way that it removes dependencies as much as possible. I'm trying to keep it as decoupled as I logically can, so in 12 months time when my time is up anyone else coming in can have no problem extending on what I have produced. Example structure: applicationStorage\ (contains all applications and associated data) applicationStorage\Applications\ (contains the applications themselves) applicationStorage\Applications\external\ (application grouping folder) (contains all external customer access applications) applicationStorage\Applications\external\site\ (main external customer access application) applicationStorage\Applications\external\site\Modules\ applicationStorage\Applications\external\site\Config\ applicationStorage\Applications\external\site\Layouts\ applicationStorage\Applications\external\site\ZendExtended\ (contains extended Zend classes specific to this application example: ZendExtended_Controller_Action extends zend_controller_Action ) applicationStorage\Applications\external\mobile\ (mobile external customer access application different workflow limited capabilities compared to full site version) applicationStorage\Applications\internal\ (application grouping folder) (contains all internal company applications) applicationStorage\Applications\internal\site\ (main internal application) applicationStorage\Applications\internal\mobile\ (mobile access has different flow and limited abilities compared to main site version) applicationStorage\Tests\ (contains PHP unit tests) applicationStorage\Library\ applicationStorage\Library\Service\ (contains all business logic, services and servicelocator; these are completely decoupled from Zend framework and rely on models' interfaces) applicationStorage\Library\Zend\ (Zend framework) applicationStorage\Library\Models\ (doesn't know services but is linked to Zend framework for DB operations; contains model interfaces and model datamappers for all business objects; examples include Iorder/IorderMapper, Iworksheet/IWorksheetMapper, Icustomer/IcustomerMapper) (Note: the Modules, Config, Layouts and ZendExtended folders are duplicated in each application folder; but i have omitted them as they are not required for my purposes.) For the library this contains all "universal" code. The Zend framework is at the heart of all applications, but I wanted my business logic to be Zend-framework-independent. All model and mapper interfaces have no public references to Zend_Db but actually wrap around it in private. So my hope is that in the future I will be able to rewrite the mappers and dbtables (containing a Models_DbTable_Abstract that extends Zend_Db_Table_Abstract) in order to decouple my business logic from the Zend framework if I want to move my business logic (services) to a non-Zend framework environment (maybe some other PHP framework). Using a serviceLocator and registering the required services within the bootstrap of each application, I can use different versions of the same service depending on the request and which application is being accessed. Example: all external applications will have a service_auth_External implementing service_auth_Interface registered. Same with internal aplications with Service_Auth_Internal implementing service_auth_Interface Service_Locator::getService('Auth'). I'm concerned I may be missing some possible problems with this. One I'm half-thinking about is a config.ini file for all externals, then a separate application config.ini overriding or adding to the global external config.ini. If anyone has any suggestions I would be greatly appreciative. I have used contextswitching for AJAX functions within the individual applications, but there is a big chance both external and internal will get web services created for them. • Is there a website that scrapes job postings to determine the popularity of web technologies? [closed]

  I'm often in a position where I need to choose between a number of web technologies. These technologies might be programming languages, or web application frameworks, or types of databases, or some other kind of toolkit used by programmers. More often than not, after some doing research, I end up with a list of contenders that are all equally viable. They're all powerful enough to solve my problem, they're all popular and well supported, and they're all equally familiar/unfamiliar to me. There's no obvious rationale by which to choose between them. Still, I need to pick one, so at this point I usually ask myself a hypothetical question: which one of these technologies, if I invest in learning it, would be most helpful to me in a job search? Where can I go on the internet to answer this question? Is there a website/service that scrapes the texts of worldwide job postings and would allow me to compare, say, the number of employers looking for expertise in technology x vs. technology y? (Where x and y are Rails vs. Djando, Java vs. Python, Brainfuck vs. LOLCode, etc.)

• Should I use heroku or should I have my own ssl? [closed]

  Base on your experience, can you please advice what will be better for me? Issue : I build applications and there are 2 major constraints. 1. ssl is needed since I used facebook api's. So, only heroku is a good option. 2. My web components tend to hit the Max_Execution_Time very often, since I pull a lot of data using the facebook api. Future possible purpose of this site : 1. Will use more apis from google, twitter, future. 2. Might request for donations. 3. Just for hobby. I have two options : 1. Create a web site in heroku itself by converting all the php components to a background worker in python using django. 2. Dont use heroku at all. Do the the complete hosting with godaddy (shared plan). And buy an ssl so that I can use fb apis etc. In this scenario, what do you suggest me to do?

  Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve moved the pull request creation UI from a modal dialog to a full page to make room for more context on what you’re sending with your pull request. In this week’s changes, you’ll see the list of commits; look for diffs to appear in the coming weeks. Corrected several issues where the line that had comments associated was not being properly differentiated in the code snippet previews on pull request discussions. Corrected an issue where pull request line comments would not appear to be associated with the proper line of code. Fixed an issue where accepting pull requests was not working properly. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue where code snippets could not be inserted using Opera. Fixed an issue where Internet Explorer displayed an error message when browsing the site using https. Fixed an issue where the CAPTCHA was not displaying properly on the Contact User page.   Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve added the ability to see the snippets of code where a user commented inline in the discussion of pull requests. You can also add another line comment directly from the discussion area, rather than navigating to the code diff viewer. Note that there’s currently a known issue where the line associated with the comment isn’t being properly differentiated for existing pull requests (the line in the middle of each diff preview should be bolded). Apologies for the inconvenience! As part of this work, we also took some time to clean up our diff viewer UI to remove the dots and introduce a new color scheme where green is used for added lines. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue affecting the ability to assign pull requests. Fixed an issue where managing various team resources for a project was not working in Chrome or Firefox. Fixed an issue where a project’s RSS subscribe dialog popped up in the wrong place. Fixed an issue where editing wiki anchor links would insert extra characters, resulting in broken links. • I've failed at PHP several times. Is Ruby the Cure? [closed]

  Extremely, extremely subjective question here, but its something I've been struggling with for quite a while. I've seriously tried to become a reasonable PHP coder for the past several years. But I've really failed every time. I hate to describe myself as a beginner, b/c I've been designing websites (using WordPress, Drupal, etc) for years, but still I just can't seem get better at programming. Could it be that I have some kind of allergy to PHP? I went through Chris Pine's awesome into to Ruby about a week ago (for about the fifth time), and though it did all all seem much clearer to me than PHP, I wondered if I was just switching languages to find an easy way out? The things I struggle with in PHP all seem elementary—when to use a function, how to return database queries in foreach/while statements, when to turn those queries into reusable functions, adding arguments to functions, etc, etc. And all the OOP stuff that I keep seeing these days just files over my head. I guess my question(s) are: Am I going about learning how to program in the wrong way? Do I have some aversion to PHP that's preventing me from catch on? If I keep pushing at Ruby/Rails, will it just eventually 'click'. Or, the one I fear, am I just unlikely to ever be a programmer? Honesty appreciated. Terry

  Here are the notes for this week’s release on CodePlex: Improved the diff viewer to take you directly to the first diff when viewing a file’s diff. We decreased the size of all of our form elements to be more in line with the rest of the content of our site. Fixed various issues around interacting with the diff viewer, especially around scrolling and interacting with the splitter. Fixed an issue where non-project members were seeing inapplicable TFS connection instructions when clicking on the source code details of a project. Fixed an issue where searching with the enter key on the advanced issue tracker was not working. Removed the confirmation pop-up when picking SVN as a source control option. Fixed an issue where the bulk editing dialog of issues in Internet Explorer would become unusable if there were values to choose.
