• My 2009 MacBook Logic board failed - options to proceed and how difficult?

  Scannerz just gave my MacBook logic board a big fat F! I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion about 3 weeks ago. The system was running short of memory so I upgraded it. The system was running fine for about 2 weeks. Yesterday the thing started acting erratic. A lot of spinning beach balls, delays, and then some errors saying files couldn't be read to or from the drive. I figured the drive was going because the system is over 3 years old. I ran Scannerz on it and it indicated a lot of errors and irregularities. I rescanned it in cursory mode, and none of them were repeatable, just showing up all over the place in different regions of the scan. I went through the docs and they implied either an I/O cable was bad, a connection was damaged, or the logic board was bad. I tossed on my backup of Snow Leopard that I cloned from the original hard drive because I figured Mountain Lion was to blame and booted from the USB drive with the clone on it. It wasn't. I performed scans on every single port, and errors and irregularities that couldn't be repeated were showing up on every single one of them. I then, for kicks, put a CD into the CD player. Scannerz doesn't test optical drives but I figured surely that will work. No it won't. More spinning beach balls and messages telling me it can't be read. It was working fine 3 days ago. I know a lot of people don't like MacBook's, but mine's been great, at least until now. It was working great even with Mountain Lion after the upgrade. The system is a mid-2009 MacBook. In my opinion, it's a complete waste to toss this system. The display is too good, the keyboard works great, and it still looks good, plus this type of MacBook still uses the FireWire 400 port and I use that for Time Machine backups. I've tried reseating the RAM, it didn't do anything. I shut the system down and put in the old RAM, booted to Snow Leopard, and the problems persist. Here are my questions: The Scannerz documentation somewhere said something about the Airport card not being seated properly, but when I go to iFixit, it's apparent, at least I think it's apparent, that this isn't a slot type Airport card that the user can easily install or remove. If the cables or connections to the Airport card are bad, could they be causing this problem. How about any other connections that can be intermittent, failing or erratic? Any type of resets that I could possibly do to get rid of this? For any of those that have replaced a logic board on a MacBook, if this really is the culprit, are there any "gotcha's" I need to be aware of? As an FYI, I replaced the hard drive on an old iBook @500MHz that I had a long time ago, and I replaced the drive on a 1.33GHz PowerBook about 6 years ago. You have to be careful, but using some of the info on web sites like iFixit it's not that hard. Time consuming, but not that hard. The Intel based MacBook's to me look like they're easier to service than either of those. I'm thinking about getting a unit off of eBay that matches mine but has something else wrong with it, like a busted display. I REFUSE to buy a new system. A guy at my office has a 2007 Mac Pro and he can't upgrade to Mountain Lion because his system is "obsoleted." That's ridiculous. If you pay nearly $7,500 for a system it shouldn't be trash just because Apple decides they don't have enough money (sorry for the soap box, but it's true, IMO!) Any input is appreciated.

• Log transport and aggregation at scale

  How're you analysing log files from UNIX/Linux machines? We run several hundred servers which all generate their own log files, either directly or through syslog. I'm looking for a decent solution to aggregate these and pick out important events. This problem breaks down into 3 components: 1) Message transport The classic way is to use syslog to log messages to a remote host. This works fine for applications that log into syslog but less useful for apps that write to a local file. Solutions for this might include having the application log into a FIFO connected to a program to send the message using syslog, or by writing something that will grep the local files and send the output to the central syslog host. However, if we go to the trouble of writing tools to get messages into syslog would we be better replacing the whole lot with something like Facebook's Scribe which offers more flexibility and reliability than syslog? 2) Message aggregation Log entries seem to fall into one of two types: per-host and per-service. Per-host messages are those which occur on one machine; think disk failures or suspicious logins. Per-service messages occur on most or all of the hosts running a service. For instance, we want to know when Apache finds an SSI error but we don't want the same error from 100 machines. In all cases we only want to see one of each type of message: we don't want 10 messages saying the same disk has failed, and we don't want a message each time a broken SSI is hit. One approach to solving this is to aggregate multiple messages of the same type into one on each host, send the messages to a central server and then aggregate messages of the same kind into one overall event. SER can do this but it's awkward to use. Even after a couple of days of fiddling I had only rudimentary aggregations working and had to constantly look up the logic SER uses to correlate events. It's powerful but tricky stuff: I need something which my colleagues can pick up and use in the shortest possible time. SER rules don't meet that requirement. 3) Generating alerts How do we tell our admins when something interesting happens? Mail the group inbox? Inject into Nagios? So, how're you solving this problem? I don't expect an answer on a plate; I can work out the details myself but some high-level discussion on what is surely a common problem would be great. At the moment we're using a mishmash of cron jobs, syslog and who knows what else to find events. This isn't extensible, maintainable or flexible and as such we miss a lot of stuff we shouldn't. Updated: we're already using Nagios for monitoring which is great for detected down hosts/testing services/etc but less useful for scraping log files. I know there are log plugins for Nagios but I'm interested in something more scalable and hierarchical than per-host alerts.

• Hoster not fulfilling contract: how to get money back?

  For several years, we have as a small webdesign company rented a dedicated server at a large hosting provider. They had several support levels. When we signed up for this, we had very limited in-house knowledge about server maintenance, and were very worried about the security of our server. We therefore took one of the more expensive support packages. An important aspect in this were these claims: [PROVIDER] verifies the availability of the latest security updates and sends you a notification to see if you are interested to have them installed [PROVIDER] verifies the availability of the latest supported software updates and sends you a notification to see if you are interested to have them installed These items were clearly stated on their website as being part of the advantage of this package.; With not enough knowledge about installing and updating such software on a Linux server, we decided to go for this package. We paid a premium of $50 per month over the maintenance package that is next in line ($100 vs $50). Over the years, we have paid several thousand dollars for this service. Then came the moment that I learned more and more about server management. And I found out step by step that our server was horrendously outdated! We had an OS that was hardly updated, our anti-virus was not working because it needed certain more recent packages on the OS, and in general there were a whole bunch of security vulnerabilities and fixes that were lacking. Shocked, I wrote the provider. Turns out, they decided unilaterally that they would not send out any notifications to clients because clients would get too many e-mails. This is a quote from their explanation: [...] We have decided not to spam its clients with OS and security updates and only install them whenever asked by the client I was shocked! They had never mentioned that they would drop this service, and in fact the claims about updating their clients through e-mail was still on their website, after they apparently stopped doing this years ago! Upon finding this out, I requested they refund all that we have paid as a premium over the other package, and make it available as future credit with their own company. I thought this was a very reasonable request. However, they said they would only go back one year and provide credit for this one year. Mails went back and forth, but they were not willing to give credit for the whole period, which I felt I was entitled to. So ultimately I left the hosting company, and filed a complaint with the BBB a while ago. Now, I am not the kind of person who runs to a lawyer for any minor thing, but in this case I am really considering taking action. I have been paying for years for a service I did not receive (the premium package had a few other pluses, but we took it primarily for these two points, and I can prove that we did not use the other benefits). For our small company the hosting costs were a very large part of our budget, and I feel it is very unfair how this large provider just does not care about not fulfilling its obligations. So my question is: what action should I take? Is a lawyer the only next step, or are there other suggestions? And am I right here to claim this money, or are they right that there is some sort of statue of limitations on such claims? Any feedback is appreciated.

• SQL Server Log File Won't Shrink due cause "log are pending replication" on non replicated DB?

  I have a non Mission Critial DB 9am-5pm SQL Server database that I have set up to do nightly full backups and log backups every 30 minutes during business hours. The database is in full recovery and normally I have no reason to truncate/shrink logs unless I do some heavy maintenance. Log backups manage the size with no issue. However I have not been at this client for several weeks and upon inspection I noticed that the log had grown to about 10 times the size of the .mdf file. I poked around backups had been running and I had not gotten any severity error alerts (SQL mail). I attempted to put DB in simple recovery and shrink the log, this was no good. I precede to try a log backup and I got: The log was not truncated because records at the beginning of the log are pending replication or Change Data Capture. Ensure the Log Reader Agent or capture job is running or use sp_repldone to mark transactions as distributed or captured. Restart SQL Server rinse repeat same thing ... I said ??? Replication is not nor ever has been set up on this DB or database /server ??? So the log backups have not been flushing the .ldf. The solution seems to have been to run exec sp_repldone, more precisley EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time= 0, @reset = 1 This procedure can be used in emergency situations to allow truncation of the transaction log when transactions pending replication are present. Using this procedure prevents Microsoft SQL Server 2000 from replicating the database until the database is unpublished and republished. ~ MSDN When I do that I get the following Msg 18757, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_repldone, Line 1 Unable to execute procedure. The database is not published. Execute the procedure in a database that is published for replication. Which makes sense Because the DB has never been published for replication. I have several questions: A) First and foremost is, WTF is going on ? What is causeing this, I am interested in knowing the why here ? Is this genuinley a bug or is there some aspect of the backup that is not functioning properly that cause's the DB to mimick a replicated state ? Someone please edify me on this. B) Second ... Do I really have to publish / replicate this DB to exec this SP to fix this ??? Sounds crazy or is there some T-SQL that I can put it in a published state exec the proc and be on my way ... C) Third, if I do indeed have to publish this database to exec the SP to release this unneeded mis replicated/intended log , to get my .ldf file and backup back on track. How do I publish the database without an online host that it is asking for ??? I don't generally do this kind of database administration and need some guidance. • Can I read an Outlook (2003/2007) PST file in C#?

  Is it possible to read a .PST file using C#? I would like to do this as a standalone application, not as an Outlook addin (if that is possible). If have seen other SO questions similar to this mention MailNavigator but I am looking to do this programmatically in C#. I have looked at the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook namespace but that appears to be just for Outlook addins. LibPST appears to be able to read PST files, but this is in C (sorry Joel, I didn't learn C before graduating). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! EDIT: Thank you all for the responses! • Snow Leopard sqlite3-ruby install problem

  UPDATE 3/20/10 I'm running Mac OSX Snow Leopard, this problem is caused by a recent train wreck in which I updated ruby without RVM. I've attempted to properly install/run RVM, however I can't get it to work. I am unable to install the sqlite3-ruby gem.   Hi guys, Sorry, I know this is a very lame question to ask and not of any use to anyone else. I have an assignment in UML due tomorrow and I don't even know the basics (all-nighter ahead!). I'm not looking for a walkthrough, I simply want your opinion on something. The assignment is as follows (you only need to skim over it!): ============= Gourmet Surprise (GS) is a small catering firm with five employees. During a typical weekend, GS caters fifteen events with twenty to fifty people each. The business has grown rapidly over the past year and the owner wants to install a new computer system for managing the ordering and buying process. GS has a set of ten standard menus. When potential customers call, the receptionist describes the menus to them. If the customer decides to book an event (dinner, lunch, picnic, finger food etc.), the receptionist records the customer information (e.g., name, address, phone number, etc.) and the information about the event (e.g., place, date, time, which one of the standard menus, total price) on a contract. The customer is then faxed a copy of the contract and must sign and return it along with a deposit (often a credit card or by check) before the event is officially booked. The remaining money is collected when the catering is delivered. Sometimes, the customer wants something special (e.g., birthday cake). In this case, the receptionist takes the information and gives it to the owner who determines the cost; the receptionist then calls the customer back with the price information. Sometimes the customer accepts the price, other times, the customer requests some changes that have to go back to the owner for a new cost estimate. Each week, the owner looks through the events scheduled for that weekend and orders the supplies (e.g., plates) and food (e.g., bread, chicken) needed to make them. The owner would like to use the system for marketing as well. It should be able to track how customers learned about GS, and identify repeat customers, so that GS can mail special offers to them. The owner also wants to track the events on which GS sent a contract, but the customer never signed the contract and actually booked a GS. Exercise: Create an activity diagram and a use case model (complete with a set of detail use case descriptions) for the above system. Produce an initial domain model (class diagram) based on these descriptions. Elaborate the use cases into sequence diagrams, and include any state diagrams necessary. Finally use the information from these dynamic models to expand the domain model into a full application model. ============= In your opinion, do you think this question is asking me to come up with a package for an online ordering system to replace the system described above, or to create UML diagrams that facilitate the existing telephone-based system?

The application have a good internet connection and there is no problem reaching the app server-side api. I see in analytics that lots of startups and click-events the past few days are lost, even I know the traffic is normal since i can see statistics from the the server api. In the analytics reports I see a day by day under-reporting. So the problems seems to be spreading/growing to all the devices using this application. Im wondering why google does not answer this in their mail-groups - several people have complained about this...well, well... If there is nothing I can do to fix it, I guess its not my fault that it got broken. But i got a feeling it is, since the problem got dramatically worse on the last deploy to Android market. • Java, Jacob and Microsoft Outlook events: Receiving "Can't find event iid" Error

  I am writing a Java program that interacts with Microsoft Outlook using the Jacob library (bridges COM and Java). This program creates a new MailItem, displaying its Inspector window to the user. I wish to subscribe to the inspector's Close event to know when the user is finished editing their mail item. To subscribe to the event, I followed the instructions in Jacob's documentation (about 2⁄3 down the page): The current [event] model is conceptually similar to the Visual Basic WithEvents construct. Basically, I provide a class called com.jacob.com.DispatchEvents which has a constructor that takes a source object (of type com.jacob.com.Dispatch) and a target object (of any type). The source object is queried for its IConnectionPointContainer interface and I attempt to obtain an IConnectionPoint for its default source interface (which I obtain from IProvideClassInfo). At the same time, I also create a mapping of DISPID's for the default source interface to the actual method names. I then use the method names to get jmethodID handles from the target Java object. All event methods currently must have the same signature: one argument which is a Java array of Variants, and a void return type. Unfortunately, none of them have received an answer. I am using version 1.7 of the Jacob library, which claims to prevent this problem: Version 1.7 also includes code to read the type library directly from the progid. This makes it possible to work with all the Microsoft Office application events, as well as IE5 events. For an example see the samples/test/IETest.java example. I noticed that the aforementioned IETest.java file subscribes to events like this: new DispatchEvents((Dispatch) ieo, ieE,"InternetExplorer.Application.1"); Therefore, I tried subscribing to my events in a similar manner: new DispatchEvents((Dispatch) inspector, eventHandler, "Outlook.Application"); new DispatchEvents((Dispatch) inspector, eventHandler, "Outlook.Application.1"); new DispatchEvents((Dispatch) inspector, eventHandler, "Outlook.Application.12"); All these attempts failed with the same error.

• In Email, Image (img) Source (src) Tags are rewritten as relative links. How to fix?

  I'm working on sending out an html based email, and every time it sends the image src tags and some of the anchor href tags are modified to be relative url's. Update 2: This is happening between when the body of the email is generated and sent and when it arrives in my inbox. Update: I am using Postfix on a LAMPP server. In addition, I am using Zend_Mail to send the emails out. For example, I have a link: src="http://www.furnituretrainingcompany.com/images/email/highpoint_2009_04/header.jpg" And it gets rewritten as: src="../../../../images/email/highpoint_2009_04/header.jpg" What can cause this to occur and how is it corrected? • Problem with Rotating a UIScrollview

  Hey guys, I am having issues trying to get the pageControl sample code to work with rotation. I managed to get it to rotate but it does not visually loads correctly until I start to scroll (then it works fine). Any Idea on how I can fix this problem?   ifstream::tellg() is returning -13 for a certain file. Basically, I wrote a utility that analyzes some source code; I open all files alphabetically, I start with "Apple.cpp" and it works perfectly.. But when it gets to "Conversion.cpp", always on the same file, after reading one line successfully tellg() returns -13.   Hey. I have a very simple text output to buffer system which will crash randomly. It will be fine for DAYS, then sometimes it'll crash a few times in a few minutes. Apparently it happens to other people. I can say that my NSString* is perfectly fine at the time of the crash. This usually works, but it seems to mess up orientation change handling of my iPad app. Longer version: I'm building a fairly complex iPad application, involving a lot of views and viewcontrollers. After running into some difficulties adjusting to the device orientation, I made a simple XCode project to figure out what the problem is. Firstly, I have read the Apple Docs on this subject (a small document called "Why won't my UIViewController rotate with the device?"), and while I do believe it has something to do with one of the reasons listed there, I'm not really sure how to fix it. In my test project I have an appDelegate, a rootViewController, and a UISplitViewController with two custom viewControllers. I use a button on the rootViewController to switch to the splitViewController, and from there I can use a button to switch back to the rootViewController. So far everything is great, i.e. all views adjust to the device orientation. However, in the right viewController of the splitViewController, I use the viewDidLoad method to initialize some other viewControllers, and add their views to its own view: self.newViewController = [[UIViewController new] autorelease]; [newViewController.view setBackgroundColor:[UIColor yellowColor]]; [self.view addSubview:newViewController.view]; This is where things go wrong. Somehow, after adding this view, adjusting to device orientation is messy. On startup everything is fine, after I switch to the splitViewController everything is still fine, but as soon as I switch back to the rootViewController it's all over. I have tried (almost) everything regarding retaining and releasing the viewcontroller, but nothing seems to fix it. As you can see from the code above, I have declared the newViewController as a property, but the same happens if I don't. Shouldn't I be adding a ViewController's view to my own view at all? That would really mess up my project, as I have a lot of viewControllers doing all sorts of things. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated...

• iPhone SDK: Audio Queue control

  Hi all, I am new to the audio queue services so I have taken an example from a book called iPhone Cool Projects where it describes how to stream audio. I want to extend this to being able to play a continuous playlist of links to mp3 files like an internet radio. The problem with the example code it that it does not detect when a stream ends and does not call AudioQueueStop at any point, so I added a counter to number of buffers added to the queue, and then decrement this counter each time audioQueueOutputCallback is called by the queue. This works fine except if when the buffer count goes to 0, and then I add a call AudioQueueFlush(audioQueue) and then AudioQueueStop(audioQueue, false) I get an error. The first time it plays an audio file it queues up the buffers and then plays sound, but doesn't callback to delete them until some 100 or more have been played. Can anyone explain this behavior? I read that there was a limit of 1 audio queue for MP3 playback for the iPhone. Is that still true? If not then I suppose I should use another audio queue for the next mp3 stream. I've had a look through the apple docs but it doesn't explain this in any particular detail. A better insight into this would be great. TIA.

• iPhone UIWebView: loadData does not work with certain types (Excel, MSWord, PPT, RTF)

  My task is to display the supported document types on an iPhone with OS 3.x, such as .pdf, .rtf, .doc, .ppt, .png, .tiff etc. Now, I have stored these files only encrypted on disk. For security reasons, I want to avoid storing them unencrypted on disk. Hence, I prefer to use loadData:MIMEType:textEncodingName:baseURL: instead of loadRequest: to display the document because loadData allows me to pass the content in a NSData object, i.e. I can decrypt the file in memory and have no need to store it on disk, as it would be required when using loadRequest. The problem is that loadData does not appear to work with all file types: Testing shows that all picture types seem to work fine, as well as PDFs, while the more complex types don't. I get a errors such as: NSURLErrorDomain Code=100 NSURLErrorDomain Code=102 WebView appears to need a truly working URL for accessing the documents as a file, despite me offering all content via the NSData object already. Here's the code I use to display the content: [webView loadData:data MIMEType:type textEncodingName:@"utf-8" baseURL:nil]; The mime-type is properly set, e.g. to "application/msword" for .doc files. Does anyone know how I could get loadData to work with all types that loadRequest supports? Or, alternatively, is there some way I can tell which types do work for sure (i.e. officially sanctioned by Apple) with loadData? Then I can work twofold, creating a temp unencrypted file only for those cases that loadData won't like. Update Looks like I'm not the first one running into this. (Mind you, I'll have to hold the decrypted data in memory, that's the whole point here).

• How do I verify a DKIM signature in PHP?

  I'll admit I'm not very adept at key verification. What I have is a script that downloads messages from a POP3 server, and I'm attempting to verify the DKIM signatures in PHP. I've already figured out the body hash (bh) validation check, but I can't figure out the header validation. http://www.dkim.org/specs/rfc4871-dkimbase.html#rfc.section.6.1.3 Below is an example of my message headers. I've been able to use the Mail::DKIM package to validate the signature in Perl, so I know it's good. I just can't seem to figure out the instructions in the RFC and translate them into PHP code. • Getting XText to work

  I know you don't like helping others in their homework but I have to make an XText grammar, write a sample code that matches this grammar and compile it to a html file. The lecturer showed us the steps and everything worked for him... He said "It's so simple it will be a 10 minute work for you". And I believed that. However at home almost nothing works as expected. And of course no more lectures to go only the exam avaits me where I have to show what I done to pass. Moreover the e-mail I sent him bounced back by the mailer-demon... I got Xtext along with Eclipse IDE from the xtext website and I unpacked it and I followed the steps in the official tuturial to get the default project template to work. The tutorial is found here: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Xtext/GettingStarted Now I'm at the step "Model". It says open the "MyModel.mydsl" I do that but the editor does not opened. It said: "Could not open the editor: The editor class could not be instantiated. This usually indicates a missing no-arg constructor or that the editor's class name was mistyped in plugin.xml." Since everything is generated, the error message does not helped me... There was an option to look at the stack trace (it was mile long) and on the top of it there was an exception: java.lang.IllegalStateException: The bundle has not yet been activated. Make sure the Manifest.MF contains 'Bundle-ActivationPolicy: lazy'. I opened Manifast.MF and Bundle-ActivationPolicy: lazy was set... I googled for the solution but no avail. It drove me nuts and I gave up. I have no experience with Eclipse and Java and XText, I just want to do my homework and forget everything until I will need it again... Anyone have experience with XText? Any help appreciated. ps: I will be on it too and I might resolve the problem in several hours. But now I am at a loss.

• Subversion vision and roadmap

  Recently C Michael Pilato of the core subversion team posted a mail to the subversion dev mailing list suggesting a vision and roadmap for the future of Subversion. Naturally, he wanted as much feedback and response as possible which is why I'm posting this here - to elicit some suggestions and contributions from you, the users of Subversion. Any comments are welcome, and I shall feedback a synopsis with a link to this question to the dev mailing list. Similarly, I've created a post on ServerFault to get feedback from the administator side of things too. So, without further ado: Vision The first thing on his "vision statement" is: Subversion has no future as a DVCS tool. Let's just get that out there. At least two very successful such tools exist already, and to squeeze another horse into that race would be a poor investment of energy and talent. There's no need to suggest distributed features for subversion. If you want a DVCS, there should be no ill-feeling if you migrate to Git, Mercurial or Bazaar. As he says, its pointless trying to make SVN like them when they already exist, especially when there are different usage patterns that SVN should be targetting. The vision for Subversion is: Subversion exists to be universally recognized and adopted as an open-source, centralized version control system characterized by its reliability as a safe haven for valuable data; the simplicity of its model and usage; and its ability to support the needs of a wide variety of users and projects, from individuals to large-scale enterprise operations. Roadmap Several ideas were suggested as being "very nice to have" and are offered as the starting point of a future roadmap. These are: Obliterate Shelve/Checkpoint Repository-dictated Configuration Rename Tracking Improved Merging Improved Tree Conflict Handling Enterprise Authentication Mechanisms Forward History Searching Log Message Templates If anyone has suggestions to add, or comments on these, the subversion community would welcome all of them. Community And lastly, there was a call for more people to become involved with Subversion development. As with most OSS projects it can be daunting to join, but there is now a push for more to be done to help. If you feel like you can contribute, please do so.
