• Installing RVM on 11.10

  I have been trying to get RVM properly installed on my system for 10 hours. The problem is, that when ever I run the command to download the install script I get this: edu@edu-VirtualBox:~$ bash -s stable < <(curl -s https://raw.github.com/wayneeseguin/rvm/master/binscripts/rvm-installer) mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/share/ruby-rvm': Permission denied If I run the command with sudo, I can get it installed, but then that leads to a whole host of other issues. Every tutorial I read says that you should not be installing rvm with sudo for a single user install. Why can I seem to get it installed without running sudo?

• Can't login to my XFCE environment from lxdm

  I installed lxdm as my display manager because I heard its very lightweight. Now after installing it when I select my Desktop as Xfce session I am not able to login. Basically what happens is it waits for sometime and than reload the same login page. On the other hand if I select lxde as my Desktop I am able to login. So, what am I doing wrong here. The other problem I am facing with lxdm is it doesn't show my default user account. I have to select more and enter both my username and password to login into any session.

• New Solaris Cluster!

  We released Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1 recently. OSC offers both High Availability (HA) and also Scalable Services capabilities. HA delivers automatic restart of software on the same cluster node and/or automatic failover from a failed node to a working cluster node. Software and support is available for both x86 and SPARC systems. The Scalable Services features manage multiple cluster nodes all providing a load-balanced service such as web servers or app serves. OSC 4.1 includes the ability to recover services from software failures, failure of hardware components such as DIMMs, CPUs, and I/O cards, a global file system, rolling upgrades, and much more.   I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. I have read this thread here: How do I load chunks of data from an assest manager during a loading screen? It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. If anyone would provide some hints, I'll gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

• Install problem on UEFI, Windows 8 new desktop

  I just bought an HP desktop, p6-2326s, which has windows 8 installed. I have tried booting a Ubuntu live disc but the machine won't boot it. When I bring up the UEFI boot menu it offers a selection of UEFI BOOT SOURCES, windows boot manager, dvd drive, IP4 Ethernet controller, or IP6 Ethernet controller. If I select the dvd drive with the CD in it I get the message "Secure boot violation, Invalid structure detected. Check secure boot policy in setup." With all other selections it just boots into windows. So where do I go from here?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on a Sony Vaio VGC-RB34G ( http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/sony-vaio-vgc-rb34g/4505-3118_7-31289053.html ) with an integrated Realtek High Definition Audio sound card. On Windows, I can set up the sound card to provide sound to my surround sound system from the Line Out, Line In, and Mic ports, as in all of these are producing audio. I have tried to use alsa to achieve this result with no luck. Is there any possible way to do this on Ubuntu? Thanks!   I am trying to take data that I request from an access database and put it into and excel file on the client computer. I usually use ajax to request a summary of the data I need. It is formatted into an html table. I need that table to be in an excel format for the user to download. What I have tried already is to use the vb.net code to open excel and silently save the data to a file, however I realized it's the sever side that opens excel, not the client side, in my locally testing of the code, excel would open on my machine and create the file. When running this on the network, I realized excel isn't on the server, I am not sure if I should just install it, or try and steam the file.

  Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains. The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects.   I was recently introduced to microsoft's tool that analyzes managed code assemblies called FxCop. It points out possible design, localization, performance, and security improvements against a pre defined set of rules (and also accepts custom rules). At first I was unsure how to go about using it as it seems to be aimed at software developers (.exe and .dll) . Its easy to get around this with the following steps: 1)Create a new folder (i.e C:\Code Analysis) 2)Publish your web application into the new folder 3)Open FxCop and add all the dll files from the newly created bin folder  to be scrutinized. • IE HTML Debugger Causing Issues with IE Enhanced Security

  In an effort to debug a Silverlight component on a page in SharePoint I opened the Developer Tools in Internet Explorer.  After choosing the Find > Select Element by Click option my page refreshed for some reason and a small bar appeared at the top of the page reading: You may be trying to access this site from a secured browser on the server. Please enable scripts and reload this page. After a quick look around the internet, some seemed to be suggesting that you have to disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (IE ESC) in Server Manager.  Since this is one of the very first things I do when creating a VM, I figured the solution did not apply to me.  However, I decided to go ahead and enable IE ESC and then disable it again to see if that would fix the problem, and it did.  So if you see that error message in IE, the bar and you've already got IE ESC disabled, you can just enable it and disable it to get rid of the bar.

  I just downloaded the latest version of the Ubuntu live CD, and have installed it on a desktop computer (a Fujitsu Scaleo P). Once installed it seems to work perfectly, although there are some updates recommended in the Update Manager. My problem is that, after having installed these updates and restarted the computer, I get this message on my monitor, and no Ubuntu interface is visible: frequency out of range - please change display mode I do not know how to change this when I can't access an interface. Is there a command that will bypass trying to boot the GUI and let me change the display mode via a CLI? I am brand new to Ubuntu and any help on this would be much appreciated.

• Agile Tools For Handling Multiple Projects

  Currently I'm leading our agile team in an iteration manager role as well as doing my regular dev work. One of the difficulties I'm facing as an IM is tracking burn-down/burn-up; not because I can't produce graphs, but because there's multiple projects that this team is working on at one time. At present I have an excel workbook with sheets that contain a whole bunch of graphs, both at an overall team and by-project level. It's clunky and I spend more time tweaking formulas and double checking calculations than I'd really like. As such, I'm interested to know if anyone has used a tool that can effectively produce these sorts of reports, burn-downs, and predictions across multiple projects. I've seen http://www.pivotaltracker.com/ do some nice things, and of course there's JIRA/Greenhopper, but I'm not aware of those being used to track the progress of multiple projects within one team. If anyone's got an idea of some tools, or has faced a similar problem before, I'd love to hear from you.

  i have the windows XP media edition running on my Dell Inspiron E1405 with all the hardware working properly. Recently i wipe out the windows and installed the Ubuntu 12.04 LTE using the CD and the installation process completed successfully but my wireless stopped working after. computer wireless indicator turned off and i can't even do the wired connection as well. it is Broadcom BCM4311 adapter. i tried to download the driver from the dell website but they don't have the Linux version of the driver if its that causing the problem. i appreciate your help that can solve my issue. thank you.
