• Analyzing Linux NFS server performance

  I'd like to do some analysis of our NFS server to help track down potential bottlenecks in our applications. The server is running SUSE Enterprise Linux 10. The kind of things I'm looking to know are: Which files are being accessed by which clients Read/write throughput on a per-client basis Overhead imposed by other RPC calls Time spent waiting on other NFS requests, or disk I/O, to service a client I already know about the statistics available in /proc/net/rpc/nfsd and in fact I wrote a blog post describing them in depth. What I'm looking for is a way to dig deeper and help understand what factors are contributing to the performance seen by a particular client. I want to analyze the role the NFS server plays in the performance of an application on our cluster so that I can think of ways to best optimize it.

I did some google-searching, found some stuff on Launchpad suggesting: sudo apt-get install --reinstall --purge emacsen-common But this is the same... so I hope there a way to tell app to just remove everything releated to emacs, and to start from scratch again?   Few months ago I am looking for a editor to doing simply edit on html,css,javascript.  Before it I tried notepad++ which is quite awesome to do all works I want to get done with him.  I choose 2 editor on my list. first is sublime text and second is phpstorm. both are cross-plateform. I tried both and both is working fine. I finally go with sublime text 2.   Here is the reason why sublime text 2 is awesome. phpstorm and sublime text 2 both is licensed  software. In sublime text 2 you can use it for unlimited time when phpstorm is available for 30 days only. Sublime text 2 is very memory efficient and lightweight software this is first thing people found best in sublime text 2. in phpstorm problem for me is sometime it’s goes unresponsive when I tried html5 boilerplate. sublime text 2 is never hang depend on memory size of project compare to phpstorm. in Sublime text 2 you can got better speed at coding after learning some shortcut and basic thing applied specially sublime text 2. Sublime text 2 come with distraction free mode when phpstorm have nothing with full-screen. Sublime text 2 support almost every language. I have seen many people in community who has move from their PHP IDE to sublime text 2. You can use LESS and coffeescript in it. There are many kind of customization out in github regarding sublime text 2.   In past I also have also tried webmatrix. the latest version of webmatrix have nothing good as sublime text 2. • Best way to use GIT to maintain web application template

  I am a sole developer and I have a web application template that I have created in Visual Studio. I am using GIT for source control, but only on my development machine. Presently I have a master and I create branches for new features, merging them back in to the master as I complete the features. I am at a point now where I am ready to use the template for deployments, and of course I want to continue adding new features via branching/merging. My question is: what would be the typical/recommended way for me to create application deployments based on the master? Should I clone the repository into a new directory that is for a particular web application? Or should I also use branching to do project development based on the main project? The projects would never be merged back into the master. However, it would be nice if I could merge future features into the master and have the ability to incorporate them into previously completed projects if desired. For more specific details of my environment: I am using TortoiseGIT in Windows 7, Visual Studio 2012, ASP.NET Web Pages. Obviously the main differences between deployments would simply be differing pages, CSS files and jQuery scripts. I found this post as I was writing this one. In order to do this should I clone the master repository and checkout from it?

• how to mod rewrite unicode byte sequence for the multibyte hyphen character

  We have case where some adobe pdf files format the hyphen character as %E2%80%90. See http://forums.adobe.com/message/2807241 this is caused by the Calibri font I guess. So these pdf files have been released and the links don't work So I thought mod rewrite would come to the rescue. I followed this post here mod_ReWrite to remove part of a URL but I can't seem to search for the % characters according to this question. Is there anything else I can do? Here is the rewrite rule I want to use: RewriteRule ^foo%(.+)bar /foo-bar [L,R=301] I also tried this and it doesn't work RewriteRule ^foo%E2%80%90bar /foo-bar [L,R=301] Any Ideas?

• Package manager borked with gforge

  I've been having a problem with the package manager. I seemed to have installed gforge, partially, but it keeps giving me errors whenever I install something. (Note that the thing I'm trying to install actually does get installed, but there is always an error returned). Here it is: Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.conf Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.secrets Creating /etc/gforge/local.inc Creating other includes invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 not found. dpkg: error processing gforge-db-postgresql (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100 Errors were encountered while processing: gforge-db-postgresql E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I try to remove it with: sudo apt-get purge gforge-common I get this: Reading package lists... • Error with APE Server Installation

  I was trying to install APE-Server from the .deb file at the ape-server homepage (www.ape-project.org) and I ran into an error so wanted to try removing the installation and reinstalling. I did a sudo apt-get remove ape-server which ran successfully but left ape-server folders in my /etc/ and /etc/init.d locations. Me being an idiot new comer to linux decided that manually delete those folders. Now when I reinstall the ape-server those folders don't get recreated and therefore I cannot send the /etc/init.d/ape-server [option] command because the folder is not found. When I try to sudo apt-get purge (or remove) ape-server I get the following sudo apt-get purge ape-server Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: ape-server* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 92 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. After this operation, 1,753kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y (Reading database ... 43924 files and directories currently installed.) Removing ape-server ... invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/ape-server not found. dpkg: error processing ape-server (--purge): subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 100 update-rc.d: /etc/init.d/ape-server: file does not exist dpkg: error while cleaning up: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: ape-server E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) My question is; how do I remove all of the ape-server installation packages that were installed so I can reinstall from scratch?

Today we are happy to announce the release of OEPE 12c (12.1.1.2) which includes various improvements for Webservices policies and security, and new features for implementing ADF applications in Eclipse Juno (3.8.1 and 4.2.1) as well as, bug fixes for other areas of the product - all of the above on top of Oracle Cloud support from the previous release. • BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Receive Location

  I have previously talked about the installation of the Community ODBC adapter and also using the ODBC adapter to generate schemas.  But what about creating a receive location? An ODBC receive location will periodically poll the configured database using the stored procedure or SQL string defined in your request schema. If you need to, begin by adding a new receive port to your BizTalk configuration. Create a new receive location and select to use the ODBC adapter and click Address. You will now be shown the ODBC Community Adapter Transport properties window.  Select connection string and you will be shown the Choose data Source window.  If you have already created the Test Database source when generating a schema from ODBC this will be shown (if not go and take a look in my previous post to see how this is done).   You will then need to choose the SQL command that will be run by the recieve port.  In this case I have deployed the Test Mapping schemas that I created previously and selected the Request schema. You should now have populated the appropriate properties for the ODBC Com Adapter. Finally set the standard receive location properties and your ODBC receive location is now ready.

  I had this random display issue ever since Ubuntu 11.04 and now running Ubuntu 11.10 and this problem still persist. It is very hard for me to explain, so I uploaded a video to elaborate itself. My wild guess is, should this be related to driver? • Client backup solution for small (100-150 user) homogenous win/nix/mac office?

  We are currently using Symantec Backup Exec with Desktop and Laptop Option for our Windows clients, time machine for mac and offer simple rsync to linux users, in addition to home folders that are always backed up and available. We are not overly happy with the horrid complexity and multitude of minor bugs in SBE, but "when you don't touch it, it mostly works". Ideally we'd like to offer a real and full backup solution to all clients, but mostly to Linux users, as they don't have a good alternative. I have barely tested Druva on windows, and it is promising in its simplicity and "it just works" looks, but does anyone have experience with it? This post lists some that I will look at.

• How can I reinstall QoS Packet Scheduler if it was removed from the winxp installation by nLite?

  I have a WinXP SP3 installation modified by nLite. This particular installation was stripped off the QoS Packet Scheduler. I was advised to remove QoS because of the overhead it produces or something like that. Now, I read this lifehacker post about windows maintenance, and it says that on the contrary, by doing so I may have done more harm than good: Disabling QoS in Windows XP: Rumor had it that Microsoft had permanently tied up 20 percent of your net bandwidth for Windows Update. They didn't, and those who disable QoS, or IPv6, in XP actually end up with some pretty harsh connectivity problems. I tend to believe this, and now I seek a way to reinstall QoS. I tried to install it by going to network adapter properties - install - service, but there is no QoS there. I have the original, untouched WinXP SP3 cd. So, is there a way to bring back QoS into my WinXP installation, preferably without reinstalling windows from scratch?

  ok so i'm working through a tutorial to get rvm installed on my mac. the bash command to get rvm via curl is curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable i understand the first half's curl command at location rvm.io, and that the result is piped to the subsequent bash command, but i'm not sure what that command is doing. My questions: -s : im always confused about how to refer to these. what type of thing is this: a command line argument? a switch? something else? -s : what is it doing? i have googled for about half an hour but not sure how to refer to it makes it difficult. stable : what is this? tl;dr : help me decipher the command bash -s stable to those answering this post, i aspire to one day be as bash literate as you. until then, opstards such as myself thank you for the help!

  While coding for Windows Phone 7 using Silverlight, I was really disappointed with the built-in MessageBox class, so I found an alternative. My disappointment was the fact that: Display of the messagebox causes the phone to vibrate (!) Display of the messagebox causes the phone to make an annoying sound. You can only have "ok" and "cancel" buttons (no other button captions). I was using the messagebox something like this: // Produces unwanted sound and vibration. // ...plus no customization of button captions. if (MessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", MessageBoxButton.OKCancel) == MessageBoxResult.OK) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } …and wanted to make minimal changes throughout my code to change it to this: // no sound or vibration // ...plus bonus of customizing button captions if (MyMessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", "ok, got it", "that sucks") == MyMessageBoxResult.Button1) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } It turns out there is a much more powerful class in the XNA framework that delivered on my requirements (and offers even more features that I didn't need like choice of sounds and not blocking the caller): Guide.BeginShowMessageBox. You can use it simply by adding an assembly reference to Microsoft.Xna.Framework.GamerServices. • moving from wpf to html5

  I don't even know if this is the right StackExchange site to post this question. If it isn't, please excuse me and please let me know which would be the right one. I am an experienced WPF developer, and I seriously love the technology. I feel pretty good when working with XAML, bindings, templates, triggers, MVVM and all the WPF world of goodness. Now I have recieved a job offer which surpasses my current salary by 50%. It a position to work as a C# developer in an ASP.Net MVC4 + HTML5 project. I have never EVER in my whole life worked with ASP.Net, nor HTML and I never ever did a web page or web application before. I certainly find myself worried that I will lose all the comfort and joy I live every day coding in WPF. And in the other hand I understand and have seen in these 3/4 months of job hunting that there's a LOT of ASP.Net and really really little or no WPF in the job market (at least here), so I somehow feel forced towards it. So, my question is: Can anybody who had to go thru this type of change tell me the pros and cons of working with these technologies from a developer's perspective? I don't care about open-source / non-microsoft or non-desktop, I care about REAL development experience in every day working with these techs, and whether ASP.Net MVC 4 + HTML + JS is as crappy as I think it is comparing it to WPF.

• Httpd restart "Address already in use" error

  I have an .rpm, which I created. In its %post part, I do some stuff, and in the end of this script, i call service httpd restart. It gives the following error: + service httpd restart Stopping httpd: [FAILED] Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:81 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:81 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs [FAILED] I got this from the rpm verbose installing (-vv). So I know its about httpd restart itself, nothing else. The according to netstat only one process (httpd) is listening on port 81. $ sudo netstat -nlp | grep 81 tcp 0 0 :::81 :::* LISTEN 29670/httpd I don't understand, why running http FAILS at stop, and FAILS again in start. Any ideas how to solve this?

• Cork Board Solution to tack things up on top or to the side of a monitor

  I'm trying to find some sort of physical product that would either go on the top or the side of an lcd monitor and give me space to tape/push-pin/post it note things for myself. In my head I am picturing an extra space above your monitor 6 inches tall that lets you tape/push pin things up in front of you. For random notes and things I want to keep track of, having them on the top/side of my monitor would keep the space on my desk itself clear, and they would be closer to my field of vision. Does something like this exist? Do I need to rig up something myself? • Vista x64: Improving troubleshoot approach skills

  I'm not a Windows SuperUser, but neither just the regular user. I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems. I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows? Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills. I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally. I am having a difficult time installing it per the directions @ http://ubuntu-manual.org/getinvolved/editors#install-texlive. • ASP.NET MVC WebService - Security for Industrial Android Clients

  I'm trying to design a system that will allow a bunch of Android devices to securely log into an ASP.NET MVC REST Web service. At present neither side are implemented. However there is an ASP.NET MVC website which the web service will site along side. This is currently using forms authentication. The idea will be that the Android devices will download data from the web service and then be able to work offline storing data in their own local databases, where users will be able to make updates to that data, and then syncing updates back to the main server where possible. The web service will be using HTTPS to prevent calls being intercepted and reduce the risk of calls being intercepted. The system is an industrial system and will not be in used by the general Android population. Instead only authorized Android devices will be authorized by the Web Service to make calls. As such I was thinking of using the Android devices serial number as a username and then a generated long password which the device will be able to pick up - once the device has been authorized server side. The device will also have user logins - but these will not be to log into the web service - just the device itself - since the device and user must be able to work offline. So usernames and passwords will be downloaded and stored on the devices themselves. My question is... what form of security is best setup on the web service? Should it use forms Authentication? Should the username and password just be passed in with each GET/POST call or should it start a session as I have with the website? The Android side causes more confusion. There seems to be a number of options here Spring-Android, Volley, Retrofit, LoopJ, Robo Spice which seems to use the aforementioned Spring, Retrofit or Google HttpClient. I'm struggling to find a simple example which authenticates with a forms based authentication system. Is this because I'm going about this wrong? Is there another option that would better suite this?

• How can I hard reset a USB device?

  I have a USB device (a modem) that is really finicky. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it refuses to connect. The only solution I have found to fix it once it gets into a bad state is to physically unplug the device and plug it back in. However, I don't always have physical access to the machine it is plugged in on, so I'm looking for a way to do this through the command line. This post suggests running: sudo modprobe -w -r usb_storage; sudo modprobe usb_storage However I get an "unknown option -w" output. This slightly modified command: sudo modprobe -r usb_storage Fails with the message FATAL: Module usb_storage is in use. If I try to kill -9 the processes marked [usb-storage] before running they refuse to die (I think because they are deeply tied to the kernel). Anyone know of a way to do this? NOTE: I cross-posted this on superuser.com as I didn't know which was more appropriate. I will delete and/or link whichever one is answered first.
