• Video for an ads-driven web-site

  I have a website, wich i will fill with a bunch of useful videos. I've implemented an ads rotation engine for articles and will do so for videos. The next milestone is to decide, how video will be integrated. They are two ways: To host videos myself. Pros: complete freedom. Cons: need tens of gigabytes of storage; support for multiple formats to be crossbrowser and crossdevice. Use Youtube. Pros: Very simple to use; nothing to do. What are pros and cons for each way ? Some questions for YouTube: Will i be able to control playback of YouTube-embedded video to make post-rolls ? What is ranking impact on my web-site, when most of pages will refer to YouTube ? Will, say, iPad play video, embedded via YouTube's iframe ? Does relying entirely on YouTube have a long-term perspective for a web-site, that should bring money ?

• Some fun with RadGridView for Silverlight literally !

  April Fools' Day is a great excuse for me to do something funny with RadGridView. So todays post will have less geekness and more fun than usually.   Silverlight being a great platform and RadGridView being enormously flexible control provoked me to do something that you can not exactly call the typical Line-Off-Business application.   So enjoy this small  Pexeso game clone created with the help of RadGridView for Silverlight and some standard Silverlight re-styling techniques. The rules are simple : Try to open two identical cards at the same time. The goal of the game try to open all cards this way.   Hi all, I am using squid like Internet proxy server on RHEL 4 update 6 & 8 with quite heavy load i.e. 8k established connections during peak hour. Without depending much on application provider's expertise I want to achieve maximum o/p from linux. W.r.t. that I have certain questions as following: How to find out if there is scope for further tcp fine-tuning (without exhausting available resources) as the benchmark values given by vendor looks poor! Is there any parameter value that is available from OS / network stack that will show me the results. If at all there is scope, how shall I identify & configure OS tcp stack parameters i.e. using sysctl or any specific parameter Post tuning how shall I clearly measure performance enhancement / degradation ?

• TechEd 2010 Day Two – No SQL Server in Sight

  Today I worked the booth at TechEd 2010, manning the new “Surface” computer, which is just the coolest object on the planet. After that I didn’t attend a single SQL Server session – instead I’ve been frequenting SharePoint, Microsoft Office, and even the High-Performance Computing sessions. The reason is that I get really high quality SQL Server presentations at PASS, SQL Saturdays, and online from Microsoft and other vendors. While there are SQL Server sessions here (after all, I’m giving one of them!) I tend to try and see things that I don’t normally get to learn about. And the cross-pollination between those technologies and mine is fantastic.     I’ve even managed to go to an Entity Framework presentation for the developers. I actually have (a little) more respect for that technology – and I’ve modified my presentation to encompass more of that information. So whenever you have the chance, take a walk outside your comfort zone.   Hi all, I have a subversion repository on my Linux machine that is set up to export a new build of a project every time a new commit occurs using a post-commit hook. I would really like to be able to provide an output message to the committer containing some status information once the hook completes. Is it possible to redirect the output of the hook to come after the standard commit messages? For example: owner@dev-machine:/working/dir$ svn commit Sending FILE1 Sending FILE2 Transmissing file data ... Committed revision 13. Exporting project... Successfully exported to mysite.com The addition of the last two lines is the functionality I'm looking for.

• bash code in rc.local not excuting after bootup

  Does anyone know why a system would not execute the script code within rc.local on bootup? I have a post configuration bash script that I want to run after the initial install of VMware ESX (Red Hat), and for some reason it doesn't seem to execute. I have the setup to log its start of execution and even its progress so that I can see how far it gets in case it fails at some point, but even when I look at that log, I am finding that didn't even started the execution of the script code. I already checked to see that script has execution permissions (755), what else should I be looking at? • A good tool for browser automation/client-side Web scripting

  I'm interested in adopting a tool/scripting language to automate some daily tasks connected with fighting forum spammers. A brief overview of these tasks: analyze new registrations and posts on a phpBB forum, and delete or deactivate spammers using a website/community that collects such spam reports. Typically such automation is integrated into the phpBB installation itself, which certainly has its advantages. My approach has the advantage of independent operation, etc. One way to think about this is in terms of browser automation. I've used iOpus iMacros for Firefox (the free version) in the past to respond to individual spammers, but current attacks are highly distributed. My "logic" for pigeonholing spammers vs. nonspammers seems beyond the easy reach of the free version of iMacros. From a more technical perspective one can think about dispensing with the browser altogether and programming GET/POST requests directed to my forum and other Web-based resources. I'm familiar with some scripting languages like Ruby and Lua, but I could be persuaded that a compiled application is better suited for these tasks. However in my experience the dynamic flexibility of interpreted environments is very useful in prototyping and debugging the application logic. So I'm leaning in the direction of scripting languages. Among browsers I favor Firefox and Chrome. I use both Windows and Linux platforms, and if the tool can adapt to an Android platform, it would make a neat demonstration of skills, yes? • is it possible to use shopify for just their shopping cart component or should I just roll my own

  I'm working on an e-commerce site and am a rails developer; due to the nature of the items, I am managing them in their own database so I'm really looking for something that is only for the shopping cart aspect (there are things like heavy nesting and integration with other pieces of the app that would be very difficult to reproduce). It seems like there are two ways that I can go. (1) One way is rolling my own shopping cart and using something like Stripe (which I have been evaluating and am working fine with it). This literally could be as easy as creating an orders table and a line items table and a lot of front-end. (2) Or I could try to integrate into a third-party shopping cart like Shopify. I am not really sure if I can just use the shopify shopping cart or whether there is any advantage to this. If I already have most of my app done, would shopify (or another shopping cart app) provide any significant benefit (it clearly could)? Or would the integration be too much of a headache? Like for example, when a user 'adds to order' on my site, can I post to shopify and associate it with that user? thx

• Is there a way to make AutoGK to resize the video?

  AutoGK is so far a good tool for converting video clips in DVD-R disc into .avi to post to YouTube. But I captured some Wii game play, and it is 16 : 9 ratio, but AutoGK only output the .avi in 4 : 3 ratio. Is there actually a way to tweak it to output the avi as 16 : 9? Otherwise, I need to run VirtualDub and download DivX codec to run it again to resize it 16 : 9. Any way this is done, or any other recommendations? thanks for helping.

• How do I convince my team that a requirements specification is unnecessary if we adopt user-stories?

  We are planning to adopt user-stories to capture stakeholder 'intent' in a lightweight fashion rather than a heavy SRS (software requirements specifications). However, it seems that though they understand the value of stories, there is still a desire to 'convert' the stories into an SRS-like language with all the attributes, priorities, input, outputs, source, destination etc. User-stories 'eliminate' the need for a formal SRS like artifact to begin with so what's the point in having an SRS? How should I convince my team (who are all very qualified CS folks by the way - both by education and practice) that the SRS would be 'eliminated' if we adopted user-stories for capturing the functional requirements of the system? (NFRs etc can be captured too, but that's not the intent of the question). So here's my 'work-flow' argument: Capture initial requirements as user-stories and later elaborate them to use-cases (which are required to be documented at a low level i.e. describing interactions with the UI prototypes/mockups and are a deliverable post deployment). Thus going from user-stories to use-cases rather than user-stories to SRS to use-cases. How are you all currently capturing user-stories at your workplace (if at all) and how do you suggest I 'make a case' for absence of SRS in presence of user-stories?

• Fail to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04

  I was using Natty for a while, but while updating to the new release there was a blackout and it wasn't able to finish and Ubuntu failed to load after that. I thought, no worries I got my files backed up and I still got my 10.10 CD I used to put Ubuntu in my computer in the first place. So I installed it again, with the plan of using the update manager to get myself with the current release... Except I get this error: W:Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found , W:Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz 404 Not Found , E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. My internet connection is just fine, seeing as I'm able to post this, but I don't know what else to do. Tried to download Quantal in another computer and putting it on a DVD (since it won't fit in a CD...) and the stupid thing fails to load it, it skips it over and goes right back to Maverick... (not a faulty disk, it installed Ubuntu just fine in a friends computer...)

• My search what the Cloud will mean for my Work

  Since I finished my MCM Exchange 2007 training back in April 2009 I’m struggling with the Cloud. I know it will change the way we do things today, but how will it affect my work. My work is Exchange consultancy mostly in the Netherlands, but more and more across the globe.   In my job as a consultant I noticed last year that a large percentage of my customers showed interest in the cloud services available today. But in most situations it seemed that it wasn’t the right time for them to switch to a cloud service at this moment. Right now I’m helping one of my customers is exploring Exchange online and it looks like they will switch over from their on-premise Exchange solution. This made me more than ever realize that I need to do something to not miss the boat.     With Office 365 coming this year, my idea is that Cloud services will take off from now. Also I’m sure that quite some customers will expect me to help them with their decision between the cloud and the on premise solution. So in the next months I will explore all the possibilities of Office 365, but also some of the competition in this field.   In my search for what the cloud will mean for me and my customers, I will go over all the aspects of the offered solutions. Any help in my search is always welcome. I’m looking forward to ideas people have around the cloud and how it will change the IT environment, especially in the Unified communications field.   Next week I will post my first article about my experiences with the cloud until now.

• Ubuntu Server 12.04 as a router. Problem with DNS

  I have a virtualbox lab made up of 4 Windows 2008 R2 servers (DC/DNS,SQL,SHAREPOINT, EXCHANGE) that are configured with static ip addresses with NIC's attached to Internal network. Everything works. I had the requirement to execute some tests that also access external services available on the internet. To keep things clean and similar to the production environment I have installed another VM, with Ubuntu Server 12.04 64 bit and configured (I hope) to work as a router like described on this post. This VM has two network interfaces: first is Bridged with the host and is used as a WAN connection and the other one attached in the Internal Network with its own static IP address on the internal network subnet. But actually the Windows servers does not connect to the internet while the unix one connects. I did a route command. this is the result: Kernel IP Routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default 10.69.121.1 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 10.69.121.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 192.168.83.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1 Can somebody help me with this configuration? :) Thanks! Addendum: I forgot to mention that one of the windows server hosts a DNS service for which I should maybe configure a forwarding server but I do not exactly know which server to forward on... :(

• 12.04.1 no audio through HDMI

  having a bit of an issue with getting audio to go through HDMI. Here are the base specs: OS: Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.1 x64 CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8G 4M FM2 R Mobo: MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 OS: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Vid Card: (integrated on CPU) AMD Radeon HD 7660D HDMI sound works fine under Win7 (after mobo and vid drivers are installed), so it's not physically broken. Audio through the normal headphone jacks works fine under Ubuntu. Looking at the audio panel, there is no HDMI output at all. aplay -l also reports only: card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 In additional drivers there are two versions: ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER (post-release update) The first installs, but problem persists. I do get more resolutions to pick from. Second version does not, reporting it failed installation and to find details at: /var/log/jockey.log Looked at the log, and it's insanely long, if necessary I can get it to you guys. Did more research and some had luck by manually installing the drivers, so tried to give that a shot by following this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Manually_installing_Catalyst_12.6 starting at 3.1 Manually installing Catalyst 12.6. I immediately had 2 issues, (1) the AMD website does not provide any drivers for Linux, and (2) the following command did not work: sudo sh amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/precise sh: 0: Can't open amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run Some other posts stated to update "alsa-drivers", but that also did not work as install command for the new version of them did not work. I forget the exact issue, but similar to above, cannot open / cannot find. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Seeking .htaccess help: Converting multiple subdomains (both HTTP and HTTPS) to www.domain.com using .htaccess

  I've been trying to get an answer to this question on other forums (the folks at SuperUser thought this was the place I needed to post) and via my connections, but I haven't gotten very far. Hopefully you guys can help me find an answer. I've got a dozen old subdomains that have been indexed by Google. These have been indexed as both HTTP AND HTTPS. I've managed to redirect all the subdomains properly, provided they are not HTTPS, but can't get any of the HTTPS subdomains to property redirect. Here's the code I'm using: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain1.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain2.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain3.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] This works great until someone goes to: https://subdomain2.mysite.com$ which is not redirected back to http://www.mysite.com$ How can I get this to work? Additionally, I'm guessing there is an easier way to make it happen than setting up a dozen pairs of RewriteCond/RewriteRule? Is there any way to do this in just a few lines, including one where I list all the subdomains? I'd actually also like to redirect everything on https://www.mysite.com$ to http://www.mysite.com$ except for 3 folders. These are mysite.com/secure, mysite.com/store, mysite.com/user. Is there any good way to add this to the .htaccess file?

• Stream Music To Ventrilo From ESXi VM

  I would like to stream music to my Ventrilo server from a Windows XP virtual machine running on an ESXi host. I have followed the instructions outlined here to stream music from something like VLC to the Ventrilo server on another machine and it works fine. I have also added the lines: sound.present = "TRUE" sound.virtualDev = "es1371" sound.fileName = "-1" sound.autodetect = "TRUE" to my .vmx file, as suggested here (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/191878), to get a sound card in my VM. The problem I am having is that it seems that my VM is not outputting any sound, so there's nothing to stream through Ventrilo. The Device Manager on the VM shows that this new sound card has drivers and doesn't appear to have any concerns with it. Can someone point me in the right direction to get my desired outcome? Thanks! • Error when reinstalling apache2

  I did an dist-upgrade on Debian Wheezy yesterday and got an error with syslog-nc-core. I found that i should try to reinstall it and tried but it ended with an error that apache2 isnt configured. I purged it also and when i now try to reinstall i get the error Setting up apache2 (2.4.10-1) ... Directory /etc/apache2/conf.d is not empty - leaving as is Please note, that directory is considered obsolete and not read anymore by default zz010_psa_httpd.conf ERROR: Config file dir.conf not properly enabled: /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/dir.conf is a real file, not touching it dpkg: error processing package apache2 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: apache2 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

• Rawr Code Clone Analysis&ndash;Part 0

  Code Clone Analysis is a cool new feature in Visual Studio 11 (vNext).  It analyzes all the code in your solution and attempts to identify blocks of code that are similar, and thus candidates for refactoring to eliminate the duplication.  The power lies in the fact that the blocks of code don't need to be identical for Code Clone to identify them, it will report Exact, Strong, Medium and Weak matches indicating how similar the blocks of code in question are.   People that know me know that I'm anal enthusiastic about both writing clean code, and taking old crappy code and making it suck less. So the possibilities for this feature have me pretty excited if it works well - and thats a big if that I'm hoping to explore over the next few blog posts. I'm going to grab the Rawr source code from CodePlex (a World Of Warcraft gear calculator engine program), run Code Clone Analysis against it, then go through the results one-by-one and refactor where appropriate blogging along the way.  My goals with this blog series are twofold: Evaluate and demonstrate Code Clone Analysis Provide some concrete examples of refactoring code to eliminate duplication and improve the code-base Here are the initial results:   Code Clone Analysis has found: 129 Exact Matches 201 Strong Matches 300 Medium Matches 193 Weak Matches Also indicated is that there was a total of 45,181 potentially duplicated lines of code that could be eliminated through refactoring.  Considering the entire solution only has 109,763 lines of code, if true, the duplicates lines of code number is pretty significant. In the next post we’ll start examining some of the individual results and determine if they really do indicate a potential refactoring.
