• "Enable Wireless" option is disabled in network settings

• DVD-drive detected by BIOS and UEFI but not by Ubuntu 12.04

  I have build a new tower containing; Asrock Z77 extreme4 (motherboard) Core i7 (processor) Hitachi LGE-DMGH 12 L (B) GH15F SATA (SATA DVD-drive) Problem is; BIOS and UEFI has no problems detecting the DVD-drive but it is not detected by Ubuntu 12.04. It is not present in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab. Below is the contents of fstab and mtab. • Directional and orientation problem

  I have drawn 5 tentacles which are shown in red. I have drew those tentacles on a 2D Circle, and positioned them on 5 vertices of the that circle. BTW, The circle is never be drawn, I have used it to simplify the problem. Now I wanted to attached that circle with tentacles underneath the jellyfish. There is a problem with the current code but I don't know what is it. You can see that the circle is parallel to the base of the jelly fish. I want it to be shifted so that it be inside the jelly fish. but I don't know how. • Mail Merge in Microsoft Word with images from Sharepoint

  Is there any way of doing a Mail Merge in Microsoft Word 2007 taking data, including images from a Sharepoint site? It's a bit crude, but I've managed to merge text by taking the data off the sharepoint site as an Excel sheet and then merging that. My problem is what to do with the images. I can set references to the images up in the Sharepoint site, however all I can find is a way of Mail Merging when images are in the same folder as the document you are trying to Merge and I can't find a sensible automated way to pulls these images together into one single folder.

• Secure Apache Virtual Hosts?

  I am going to host a few small sites on VPS, and each of them are going to run my own custom PHP scripts. I am fairly certain that they are secure (did everything in the book, plus some of which is not in the book) to make sure they can't be exploited. But just to be safe I want to know how I could secure each of the virtual hosts so that they can't escape from there virtual host (if a hacker uploaded a shell they could not go above the www folder a legitimate user can't do in ftp no matter how many times they click ..) folder on Debian and Apache.

• System speakers not recognized

  Since upgrading to Xubuntu 13.10, sound has not functioned properly (e.g. screeching when playing Skype notifications). Now, however, it does not function at all. pavucontrol only shows Dummy Output and does not recognize the built-in speakers on my Dell Precision M4600. Possibly related, the sound indicator applet does not come up when I click on it, only showing a small white bar underneath it. • FFmpeg creates emtpy (black) frames

  I have a set of images from a timelapse shot (172 JPG files) that I want to convert into a movie. I tried several parameters with FFmpeg, but all I get is a video with black frames (though it has the expected length). ffmpeg -f image2 -vcodec mjpeg -y -i img_%03d.jpg timelapse2.mpg The command above creates this video: http://sdm-net.org/data/timelapse2.mpg What I'm expecting is something like this (created with Time Lapse Assembler.app): https://vimeo.com/39038362 - This is my fallback option, but I'd really like to create timelapse movies from a script. I'm on OSX Lion (10.7.3) with FFmpeg version (0.10) installed via Homebrew. I also tried to find a proper version of mencoder for OSX, but this doesn't seem to be an easy task. Also, ImageMagick's convert doesn't seem to work nicely, it creates really bad output and it seems there's not much I can do about it... • Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it. • Too many heap subpools might break the upgrade

  Recently one of our new upcoming Oracle Database 11.2 reference customers did upgrade their production database - a huge EBS system - from Oracle 9.2.0.8 to Oracle Database 11.2.0.2. They've tested very well, we've optimized the upgrade process, the recompilation timings etc.  But once the live upgrade was done it did fail in the JAVA component piece with this error: begin if initjvmaux.startstep('CREATE_JAVA_SYSTEM') then * ORA-29553: classw in use: SYS.javax/mail/folder ORA-06512: at "SYS.INITJVMAUX", line 23 ORA-06512: at line 5 Support diagnosis was pretty quick - and refered to:Bug 10165223 - ORA-29553: class in use: sys.javax/mail/folder during database upgrade But how could this happen? Actually I don't know as we have used the same init.ora setup on test and production. The only difference: the prod system has more CPUs and RAM. Anyway, the bug names as workarounds to either decrease the SGA to less than 1GB or decrease the number of heap subpools to 1. Finally this query did help to diagnose the number of heap subpools: select count(distinct kghluidx) num_subpools from x$kghlu where kghlushrpool = 1; The result was 2 - so we did run the upgrade now with this parameter set: _kghdsidx_count=1 And finally it did work well. One sad thing:After the upgrade did fail Support did recommend to restore the whole database - which took an additional 3-4 hours. As the ORACLE SERVER component has been already upgraded successfully at the stage where the error did happen it would have been fine to go on with the manual upgrade and start catupgrd.sql script. It would have been detected that the ORACLE SERVER is upgraded already and just picked up the non-upgraded components. The good news:Finally I had one extra slide to add to our workshop presentation

• Experiences with Ubuntu One?

  I'm currently testing several backup/sync services: Dropbox, SpiderOak and Ubuntu One. Of them, Dropbox is the winner hands down; SpiderOak is nice too, but a bit more intrusive and unpredictable (sometimes is slow in syncing some files, or doesn't sync them at all). Ubuntu One has promise, but I've used it much less than the other two. I'm thinking about buying a "20 pack" and using Ubuntu One as my only synchronization software. It's the cheapest of them all (3$/month vs 10$ in Dropbox and SpiderOak), and 20GB of space is enough for me. My intention is to sync most of my $HOME folder. All the computers I'll connect will have Ubuntu installed, so not being multiplatform doesn't really matter to me. If its performance is as good as Dropbox's, I'm sold. But I'd like to gauge some experiences here first. Is anyone using it seriously? I.e., to sync a lot of files that change often (like the aforementioned $HOME folder, program sources, or something alike). What have been your experiences? Thanks in advance.

• Calculating IOPS for a single HDD - what am I doing wrong?

  So I know there is no standardized way of calculating IOPS for a HDD, but from everything I have read it appears one of the most accurate formulas is the following: IOP/ms = + {rotational latency} + ({block size} / {data transfer rate}) Which is IOs per millisecond or what the book I've been reading calls "Disk Service Time". Also rotational latency is calculated as half of one rotation in milliseconds. This was taken from the EMC book "Information Storage and Management" -arguably a pretty reliable source right\wrong? Putting this formula into practice consider this Seagate data sheet. I am going to calculate IOPS for the ST3000DM001 model for a block size of 4kb: Seek Average (Write) = 9.5 -I'll measuring IOPS for writes Spindle speed = 7200rpm Average Data Rate = 156MB/s So my variables are: Seek Time = 9.5ms Rotational latency = (.5 / (7200rpm / 60)) = 0.004s = 4ms Data Rate = 156MB/s = (0.156MB/ms / 0.004MB) = 39 9.5ms + 4ms + 39 = IO/ms 52.5 1 / (52.5 * 0.001) = 19 IOPS 19 IOPS for this drive clearly is not right so what am I doing wrong?

• Ubuntu 13.10 No Sound

  I was running 13.04 since last monday and just today i upgraded to 13.10, in both of these version i have not managed to get my sound working. I have gone into alsamixer and disabled auto mute and the volumes are up. However if somebody thinks they can help me fix this i will gladly follow any steps. • Can't access individual samba shares

  I've just installed CentOS and I'm configuring Samba. I have a share with the following in the smb.conf file: [storage] comment = Main storage for all use path = /share public = yes browseable = yes writable = yes printable = no write list = bob root create mask = 0775 guest ok = yes available = yes In Windows Explorer, I can reach the page listing all the shares on the server, but I click on the shares themselves, I get an error saying that the folder cannot be found. I have verified that the folder /share exists and I've also given it 777 permissions so it cannot be due to permissions. What is causing this? I can post more config files if necessary.

• Font corruption: lines through characters

  I have an odd problem where a one-pixel high white line is displayed through certain letters of text. Almost always only a single character type is affected at once, and only in one font size (though that size can change over time). Most of the time things are fine, but this happens several times a day. It's been happening ever since I upgraded to 10.10. I have noticed few patterns: It might be a problem with Firefox (I'm currently using the nightly ppa, but it occurred in 3.6 also) - but this could just be because I spend most of my time on my computer either at a browser or text editors. I seem to remember it happening with the buttons on various Gnome dialogs. It never occurs in text I've typed, be it an email, url bar, etc. In Firefox it happens across tabs, and the problem remains even if they are closed or reloaded; only restarting the program can fix it. Two examples (in the first, only the larger "r" is corrupted): Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

  Here is my issues, which i am currently having, in my windows 7, When i go to one specific folder, .Please take a look, This is not my file, but just to get an idea, there is 10 file max no more than 500 MB, i am not able to remove it, or cut it, or move it, it starts that green bar loading and never finish, The problem is, after getting into this folder, my SONY VAIO starts, overheating and if i did not restart, nothing can stop it to be cool down . I have reinstalled windows 2 weeks ago, i don't think this should be issue regarding it. Please, help me what the hell i should do with this GREEN BAR< to stop this headache,

• Troubleshoot odd large transaction log backups...

  I have a SQL Server 2005 SP2 system with a single database that is 42gigs in size. It is a modestly active database that sees on average 25 transactions per second. The database is configured in Full recovery model and we perform transaction log backups every hour. However it seems to be pretty random at some point during the day the log backup will go from it's average size of 15megs all the way up to 40gigs. There are only 4 jobs that are scheduled to run on the SQL server and they are all typical backup jobs which occur on a daily/weekly basis. I'm not entirely sure of what client activity takes place as the application servers are maintained by a different department. Is there any good way to track down the cause of these log file growths and pinpoint them to a particular application, or client? Thanks in advance.

This will also be the name of the first filesystem and, by default, be placed at the mountpoint "/$NAME" $REDUNDANCY = either mirror or raidzN, and N can be 1, 2, or 3. If you leave N off, then it defaults to 1. $DISK1_0..N = the disks assigned to the pool. Example 1: zpool create tank mirror c4t1d0 c4t2d0 name of pool: tank redundancy: mirroring disks being mirrored: c4t1d0 and c4t2d0 Capacity: size of a single disk Example 2: zpool create tank raidz c4t1d0 c4t2d0 c4t3d0 c4t4d0 c4t5d0 Here the redundancy is raidz, and there are five disks, in a 4+1 (4 data, 1 parity) config. This means that the capacity is 4 times the disk size. If the command used "raidz2" instead, then the config would be 3+2. Likewise, "raidz3" would be a 2+3 config. Example 3: zpool create tank mirror c4t1d0 c4t2d0 mirror c4t3d0 c4t4d0 This is the same as the first mirror example, except there are two mirrors now. ZFS will stripe data across both mirrors, which means that writing data will go a bit faster. Note: you cannot create a mirror of two raidzs. You can create a raidz of mirrors, but to do that requires trickery.

  Hi all, I'm on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 I was recently uninstalling mysql5 from /opt/local/bin. I typed: rm -rf /opt/local/bin mysql* instead of rm -rf /opt/local/bin/mysql* This deleted my entire /opt/local/bin directory which puts me in a bit of a bind. Is there any way to recover these files? If not, I have a friend that is using a similar set of programs, would it be possible to use the contents of his folder? If I end up needing to re-install everything in this folder, what is the best way to go about doing this? Thanks in advance!

• Apache unable to write to files and folders on Fedora 16

  I've recently installed Fedora 16 on a new PC, and I'm intending to use it for developing my websites. I've set up Apache to host multiple development sites on the machine. Right now though, I am trying to install a PHP framework (Symfony2) and I'm unable to install it on to the web server. It comes back with an error saying that it's unable to write to the cache folder on the server. I have checked and modified the folder so that it is writeable, but still the error keeps being displayed? What am I doing wrong?

  Sorry this question is trivial, but I couldn't get it to work: I have a folder full of .zip files, each .zip file contains exactly one .xml file. The zip files have sensible names like a.zip etc., while the .xml file contained in them have some "randomname".xml Now I want to unpack all the .zip files in the folder, preserving the name of the .zip files, so that a.zip gets unpacked into a.xml, b.zip into b.xml etc... I only managed to achieve a batch unpacking with the command: for z in *.zip; do unzip "$z"; done How do I enhance this to keep the names?

• Should you create a class within a method?

  I have made a program using Java that is an implementation of this project: http://nifty.stanford.edu/2009/stone-random-art/sml/index.html. Essentially, you create a mathematical expression and, using the pixel coordinate as input, make a picture. After I initially implemented this in serial, I then implemented it in parallel due to the fact that if the picture size is too large or if the mathematical expression is too complex (especially considering the fact that I made the expression recursively), it takes a really long time. During this process, I realized that I needed two classes which implemented the Runnable interface as I had to put in parameters for the run method, which you aren't allowed to do directly. One of these classes ended up being a medium sized static inner class (not large enough to make an independent class file for it though). The other though, just needed a few parameters to determine some indexes and the size of the for loop that I was making run in parallel - here it is: class DataConversionRunnable implements Runnable { int jj, kk, w; DataConversionRunnable(int column, int matrix, int wid) { jj = column; kk = matrix; w = wid; } public void run() { for(int i = 0; i < w; i++) colorvals[kk][jj][i] = (int) ((raw[kk][jj][i] + 1.0) * 255 / 2.0); increaseCounter(); } } My question is should I make it a static inner class or can I just create it in a method?
