  Do you love the new Metro design and need a native Twitter desktop client for your Windows system too? Then you may want to have a look at MetroTwit. When you kick-start the MetroTwit exe file it will download the necessary .NET Framework components if you do not already have them installed. • SQL – NuoDB and Third Party Explorer – SQuirreL SQL Client, SQL Workbench/J and DbVisualizer

  I recently wrote a four-part series on how I started to learn about and begin my journey with NuoDB. Big Data is indeed a big world and the learning of the Big Data is like spaghetti – no one knows in reality where to start, so I decided to learn it with the help of NuoDB. Part 1 – Install NuoDB in 90 Seconds Part 2 – Manage NuoDB Installation Part 3 – Explore NuoDB Database Part 4 – Migrate from SQL Server to NuoDB …and in this blog post we will try to answer the most asked question about NuoDB. “I like the NuoDB Explorer but can I connect to NuoDB from my preferred Graphical User Interface?” Honestly, I did not expect this question to be asked of me so many times but from the question it is clear that we developers absolutely want to learn new things and along with that we do want to continue to use our most efficient developer tools. Now here is the answer to the question: “Absolutely, you can continue to use any of the following most popular SQL clients.” NuoDB supports the three most popular 3rd-party SQL clients. In all the leading development environments there are always more than one database installed and managing each of them with a different tool is often a very difficult task. Developers like to use one tool, which can control most of the databases. Once developers are familiar with one database tool it is very difficult for them to switch to another tool. This is particularly difficult when we developers find that tool to be the key reason for our efficiency. Let us see how to install each of the NuoDB supported 3rd party tools along with a quick tutorial on how to go about using them. SQuirreL SQL Client First download SQuirreL Universal SQL client. On the Windows platform you can double-click on the file and it will install the SQuirrel client. Once it is installed, open the application and it will bring up the following screen. Now go to the Drivers tab on the left side and scroll it down. You will find NuoDB mentioned there. Now right click over it and click on Modify Driver. Now here is where you need to make sure that you make proper entries or your client will not work with the database. Enter following values: Name: NuoDB Example URL: jdbc:com:nuodb://localhost:48004/test Website URL: http://www.nuodb.com Now click on the Extra Class Path tab and Add the location of the nuodbjdbc.jar file. If you are following my blog posts and have installed NuoDB in the default location, you will find the default path as C:\Program Files\NuoDB\jar\nuodbjdbc.jar. The class name of the driver is automatically populated. Once you click OK you will see that there is a small icon displayed to the left of NuoDB, which shows that you have successfully configured and installed the NuoDB driver. Now click on the tab of Alias tab and you can notice that it is empty. Now click on the big Plus icon and it will open screen of adding an alias. “Alias” means nothing more than adding a database to your system. The database name of the original installation can be anything and, if you wish, you can register the database with any other alternative name. Here are the details you should fill into the Alias screen below. Name: Test (or your preferred alias) Driver: NuoDB URL: jdbc:com:nuodb://localhost:48004/test (This is for test database) User Name: dba (This is the username which I entered for test Database) Password: goalie (This is the password which I entered for test Database) Check Auto Logon and Connect at Startup and click on OK. That’s it! You are done. On the right side you will see a table name and on the left side you will see various tabs with all the relevant details from respective table. You can see various metadata, schemas, data types and other information in the table. In addition, you can also generate script and do various important tasks related to database. You can see how easy it is to configure NuoDB with the SQuirreL Client and get going with it immediately. SQL Workbench/J This is another wonderful client tool, which works very well with NuoDB. The best part is that in the Driver dropdown you will see NuoDB being mentioned there. Click here to download  SQL Workbench/J Universal SQL client. The download process is straight forward and the installation is a very easy process for SQL Workbench/J. As soon as you open the client, you will notice on following screen the NuoDB driver when selecting a New Connection Profile. Select NuoDB from the drop down and click on OK. In the driver information, enter following details: Driver: NuoDB (com.nuodb.jdbc.Driver) URL: jdbc:com.nuodb://localhost/test Username: dba Password: goalie While clicking on OK, it will bring up the following pop-up. Click Yes to edit the driver information. Click on OK and it will bring you to following screen. This is the screen where you can perform various tasks. You can write any SQL query you want and it will instantly show you the results. Now click on the database icon, which you see right on the left side of the word User=dba.  Once you click on Database Explorer, you can perform various database related tasks. As a developer, one of my favorite tasks is to look at the source of the table as it gives me a proper view of the structure of the database. I find SQL Workbench/J very efficient in doing the same. DbVisualizer DBVisualizer is another great tool, which helps you to connect to NuoDB and retrieve database information in your desired format. A developer who is familiar with DBVisualizer will find this client to be very easy to work with. The installation of the DBVisualizer is very pretty straight forward. When we open the client, it will bring us to the following screen. As a first step we need to set up the driver. Go to Tools >> Driver Manager. It will bring up following screen where we set up the diver. Click on Create Driver and it will open up the driver settings on the right side. On the right side of the area where it displays Driver Settings please enter the following values- Name: NuoDB URL Format: jdbc:com.nuodb://localhost:48004/test Now under the driver path, click on the folder icon and it will ask for the location of the jar file. Provide the path as a C:\Program Files\NuoDB\jar\nuodbjdbc.jar and click OK. You will notice there is a green button displayed at the bottom right corner. This means the driver is configured properly. Once driver is configured properly, we can go to Create Database Connection and create a database. If the pop up show up for the Wizard. Click on No Wizard and continue to enter the settings manually. Here is the Database Connection screen. This screen can be bit tricky. Here are the settings you need to remember to enter. Name: NuoDB Database Type: Generic Driver: NuoDB Database URL: jdbc:com.nuodb://localhost:48004/test Database Userid: dba Database Password: goalie Once you enter the values, click on Connect. Once Connect is pressed, it will change the button value to Reconnect if the connection is successfully established and it will show the connection details on lthe eft side. When we further explore the NuoDB, we can see various tables created in our test application. We can further click on the right side screen and see various details on the table. If you click on the Data Tab, it will display the entire data of the table. The Tools menu also has some very interesting and cool features like Driver Manager, Data Monitor and SQL History. Summary Well, this was a relatively long post but I find it is extremely essential to cover all the three important clients, which we developers use in our daily database development. • Unity stuck in 2D mode, Nvidia Quadro graphics "unknown", Nvidia-Current active but not in use

  I've seen this problem reported under several questions, but I haven't been able to resolve any of it so I thought I'd bring it all in under one umbrella. I started a new job and was given a Dell Precision M6400 laptop with Nvidia Quadro FX 2700M graphics card. It had a previous version of Ubuntu on it, but nobody had any passwords for it so I wiped the drive and did a fresh install of 11.10 from scratch. I didn't do any updates during installation, preferring to do them after boot. Updates ran fine and the system works... except Unity is in 2D mode. System Settings - Additional Drivers shows that Nvidia-Current is active but not in use. System Settings - System Info shows Graphics Driver Unknown, Experience Standard Nvidia X Server Settings is installed and working, re-writing the xorg.conf did nothing. /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: Quadro FX 2700M/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 285.05.09 Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: yes One suggestion was to do a sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia* and that resulted in a scrambled screen on boot and a non-bootable installation. Pressing the Delete key on boot allowed me to access the recovery console and do a sudo apt-get install nvidia-current, which brought me back to a working, bootable system. Another suggestion was to edit /etc/default/grub and change the line reading "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to read "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash vmalloc=192MB" thus allocating more video RAM. I did that, followed by a sudo update-grub and a re-boot. No change. Created a brand new standard user and logged on with that account, no change.

• Formatting Dates, Times and Numbers in ASP.NET

  Formatting is the process of converting a variable from its native type into a string representation. Anytime you display a DateTime or numeric variables in an ASP.NET page, you are formatting that variable from its native type into some sort of string representation. How a DateTime or numeric variable is formatted depends on the culture settings and the format string. Because dates and numeric values are formatted differently across cultures, the .NET Framework bases its formatting on the specified culture settings. By default, the formatting routines use the culture settings defined on the web server, but you can indicate that a particular culture be used anytime you format. In addition to the culture settings, formatting is also affected by a format string, which spells out the formatting details to apply. The .NET Framework contains a bounty of format strings. There are standard format strings, which are typically a single letter that applies detailed formatting logic. For example, the "C" format specifier will format a numeric type as a currency value; the "Y" format specifier displays the month name and four-digit year of the specified DateTime value. There are also custom format strings, which display a apply a very specific formatting rule. These custom format strings can be put together to build more intricate formats. For instance, the format string "dddd, MMMM d" displays the full day of the week name followed by a comma followed by the full name of the month followed by the day of the month. For more involved formatting scenarios, where neither the standard or custom format strings cut the mustard, you can always create your own formatting extension methods. This article explores the standard format strings for dates, times and numbers and includes a number of custom formatting methods I've created and use in my own projects. • Windows CE: SDK Doesn’t Show up in Visual Studio 2008

  A customer recently contacted me because after installing an SDK it didn’t show up in Visual Studio 2008.  So being a good vendor I installed VS2008 and then installed the SDK – no problem the SDK showed up and I could create projects based on it. I let the customer know that the SDK definitely works with VS2008. The customer got back to me and asked what OS I was using. Hmm, how could that play into this? I told him that I use Windows XP, and it turned out that he is way more modern than I am and is using both Windows Vista and 7. The customer opened a support case with Microsoft. The answer turns out to be that the SDK install requires the user to be logged on as an administrator when installing on Windows Vista and 7 for the SDK to show up in Visual Studio 2008. This problem does not seem to exist for Visual Studio 2005 on those operating systems. The actual instructions from Microsoft Support are: 1)      Make sure Visual Studio 2008 is not running. I also shut down the device emulator manager but you may not be using that. 2)      Open a “Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt” as Administrator. On Windows 7 just right click the short cut and pick the “Run as administrator” option. 3)      Enter the following command: msiexec /log SDKInstallLog.txt /package <the path to your .msi file> 4)      When asked if you wish to do a custom or complete install pick custom 5)      Instruct the installer to omit the installation of the documentation. This was something I found about CE 6 SDK installation issue and may have no bearing upon your problem but I did it anyway. 6)      Install   Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

  Hoje (23/03) tivemos aqui em Londrina a primeira parada do Roadshow Microsoft, com apresentação de diversos produtos com aplicação em cenários técnicos. Como já é de costume, o evento reuniu alguns dos melhores profissionais de DEV e INFRA, com informações extremamente úteis sobre .NET Framework 4, Entity Framework, Exchange, Sharepoint, entre outras tecnologias e produtos. Na minha visão, o evento conseguiu atender a expectativa dos participantes, através dos cenários técnicos criados para a ficticia Adventure Works (acho que eu conheço esta empresa… :). Através da participação ativa de todos, as tracks de DEV e INFRA tiveram o sucesso aparente no comentário do pessoal nos intervalos e almoço. Depois das palestras, lá por 19h, tivemos um jantar com o pessoal da Microsoft e influenciadores da região, onde, até as 21h, discutimos muita coisa (até Commerce Server!). Esta aproximação com o time de comunidades da Microsoft, além de alguns “penetras” como o próprio Alex disse, é extremamente importante e útil, visto que passamos conhecemos a fundo as intenções e futuras ações da Microsoft visando as comunidades locais. Para concluir, algo que sempre digo: participe de alguma comunidade técnica da sua região. Entre em contato com influenciadores, conheça os grupos de usuários perto de você e não perca tempo. • Why does my PowerBook display “Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!” and stop booting?

  I have an old PowerBook G4 that worked (more or less) fine with a previous installation of Ubuntu Desktop 12.04. A few days ago I decided to install Ubuntu Server instead, and got a copy of Ubuntu Server 12.10. The installation seemed to complete successfully, but now, whenever I try to boot the system, it simply halts at some point after I unlock the hard disk. There is a lot of text on the screen (which is normal for me during a boot, except now it's mostly errors and debug information), the last of which is this: [ 26.338228] Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed! Pressing control command power to force a reboot yields exactly the same results. A search for the error message turned up many temporary solutions involving kernel parameters, but none of them have worked for me. I don't think I can remove the default set of parameters (which I think is quiet splash), but I can pass additional parameters on boot. I've tried booting on AC and battery power, as well as using these combinations of kernel parameters while on battery power: acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht acpi=off nomodeset nomodeset acpi=off Why am I getting this error and how can I fix it?

• Can't install TeamViewer on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. I was a Windows user but I want to start using Ubuntu from now on. Everything goes well except installation of the teamviewer. I have downloaded the file from the official website. There, it says that just double click on the *.deb file and it will install it automatically. Well, it gives an error: Failed to remove essential system package, You requested to remove a package which is an essential part of your system. Then I tried the second way of installation, which is on the terminal. I types as suggested: sudo dpkg -i teamviewer_linux.deb. It started installing but later on failed. HEre is the copy of the screen. Preparing to replace teamviewer7:i386 7.0.9377 (using teamviewer_linux.deb) ...   I have downloaded .Net framework 4.5 and Visual Studio 2012 since it was released to MSDN subscribers on the 15th of August.For people that do not know about that yet please have a look at Jason Zander's excellent blog post .Since then I have been investigating the many new features that have been introduced in this release.In this post I will be looking into new features available in ASP.Net 4.5 and VS 2012.In order to follow along this post you must have Visual Studio 2012 and .Net Framework 4.5 installed in your machine.Download and install VS 2012 using this link.My machine runs on Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012 works just fine. Please find all my posts regarding VS 2012, here .Well I have not exactly kept my promise for writing short blog posts, so I will try to keep this one short. 1) Launch VS 2012 and create a new Web Forms application by going to File - >New Web Site - > ASP.Net Web Forms Site.2) Choose an appropriate name for your web site.3) Build and run your site (CTRL+F5). Then go to View - > Source to see the HTML markup (Javascript e.t.c) that is rendered through the browser.You will see that the ASP.Net team has done a good job to make the markup cleaner and more readable. The ViewState size is significantly smaller compared to its size to earlier versions.Have a look at the picture below 4) Another thing that you must notice is that the new template makes good use of HTML 5 elements.When you view the application through the browser and then go to View Page Source you will see HTML 5 elements like nav,header,section.Have a look at the picture below  5) In VS 2012 we can browse with multiple browsers.   During my session “Understanding the MVVM pattern” at MIX10 in Vegas, I showed some components of the MVVM Light toolkit V3, which gave me the occasion to announce the release of version 3. This version has been in alpha stage for a while, and has been tested by many users. it is very stable, and ready for a release. So here we go! What’s new What’s new in MVVM Light Toolkit V3 is the topic of the next post. Cleaning up I would recommend cleaning up older versions before installing V3. I prepared a page explaining how to do that manually. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to create an automatic cleaner/installer, this is very high on my list but with the book and the conferences going on, it will take a little more time. Cleaning up is recommended because I changed the name of some DLLs to avoid some confusion (between the WPF3.5 and WPF4 version, as well as between the SL3 and SL4 versions). • Examining ASP.NET's Membership, Roles, and Profile - Part 18

  Membership, in a nutshell, is a framework build into the .NET Framework that supports creating, authenticating, deleting, and modifying user account information. Each user account has a set of core properties: username, password, email, a security question and answer, whether or not the account has been approved, whether or not the user is locked out of the system, and so on. These user-specific properties are certainly helpful, but they're hardly exhaustive - it's not uncommon for an application to need to track additional user-specific properties. For example, an online messageboard site might want to also also associate a signature, homepage URL, and IM address with each user account. There are two ways to associate additional information with user accounts when using the Membership model. The first - which affords the greatest flexibility, but requires the most upfront effort - is to create a custom data store for this information. If you are using the SqlMembershipProvider, this would mean creating an additional database table that had as a primary key the UserId value from the aspnet_Users table and columns for each of the additional user properties. The second option is to use the Profile system, which allows additional user-specific properties to be defined in a configuration file. (See Part 6 for an in-depth look at the Profile system.) This article explores how to store additional user information in a separate database table. We'll see how to allow a signed in user to update these additional user-specific properties and how to create a page to display information about a selected user. In the first post, JMS Step 1 - How to Create a Simple JMS Queue in Weblogic Server 11g we looked at how to create a JMS queue and its dependent objects in WebLogic Server. In the previous post, JMS Step 2 - Using the QueueSend.java Sample Program to Send a Message to a JMS Queue I showed how to write a message to that JMS queue using the QueueSend.java sample program. In this article, we will use a similar sample, the QueueReceive.java program to read the message from that queue. Please review the previous posts if you have not already done so, as they contain prerequisites for executing the sample in this article. 1. Source code The following java code will be used to read the message(s) from the JMS queue. As with the previous example, it is based on a sample program shipped with the WebLogic Server installation. The sample is not installed by default, but needs to be installed manually using the WebLogic Server Custom Installation option, together with many, other useful samples. You can either copy-paste the following code into your editor, or install all the samples. Copy the above QueueReceive.java file to this directory. Set the CLASSPATH and environment to match the WebLogic server environment. Go to $MIDDLEWARE_HOME/user_projects/domains/base_domain/bin  and execute . ./setDomainEnv.sh Collect the following information required to run the script: The JNDI name of the JMS queue to use In the WebLogic server console > Services > Messaging > JMS Modules > Module name, (e.g. TestJMSModule) > JMS queue name, (e.g. TestJMSQueue) select the queue and note its JNDI name, e.g. jms/TestJMSQueue The JNDI name of the connection factory to use to connect to the queue Follow the same path as above to get the connection factory for the above queue, e.g. TestConnectionFactory and its JNDI name e.g. jms/TestConnectionFactory The URL and port of the WebLogic server running the above queue Check the JMS server for the above queue and the managed server it is targeted to, for example soa_server1. • Technical : Configure WebCenter PS5 with WebCenter Content - Good Example

  Read Intro for this post and understand the problem here Solution  : To integrate Jdeveloper with WebCenter Content PS5 and browse through the folders , we need to enable "folders_g" features instead of "Framework Folders" . Detailed steps below . Login to Webcenter content using admin credentials https://<hostname>:<port number>/cs Go to "Administration" menu and click on "Admin Server"  In the newly opened browser , click on 'Component Manager' in the left navigation menu . On the right hand side , you should see "Advanced Component Manager" , click on it . You will now see a list of enabled and disabled features . Disable "Framework Folders" and enable "folders_g" folders . Restart the server . There you go ! . You should have a successful connection and you should be able to traverse through the contribution folders from Jdeveloper. I am posting a few pics to help you navigate the steps .

  .NET Reflector 6.1 and .NET Reflector Pro 6.1 have been released. You can download them from: http://www.red-gate.com/products/reflector/index.htm .NET Reflector is a class browser and disassembler for .NET assemblies. .NET Reflector Pro is a Visual Studio debugging extension that allows you to step through third party and framework assemblies, as if they were built from your own source code. This release fixes several problems that were present in the 6.0 release: Support for using a copy of Reflector.cfg stored alongside Reflector.exe has been re-enabled so users upgrading from 5.x releases will not lose their settings. Fixed unhandled exception on exit of Visual Studio when .NET Reflector add-in used in conjunction with TestDriven.NET add-in. Added better support for dealing with framework assemblies, which only contain meta-data, in the "Referenced Assemblies" folder. Fixed problem where attempted decompilation with CppCliLanguage add-in would lead to display of a page on the Red Gate website. Added option to activate .NET Reflector Pro to .NET Reflector menu in Visual Studio after receiving feedback from a number of users that it was hard to figure out how to activate the product.
