  • Upgrade only one version of XP to Windows 8 on a dual boot computer

    I have a computer running Windows XP Pro 32-bit and 64-bit in dual boot. I need to retain Windows XP 32-bit Pro, as I have expensive software that will only run on that specific version. I want to upgrade my 64-bit installation of XP to Windows 8 without losing the 32-bit installation. If I simply use the ISO to upgrade from within my XP 64-bit installation, will I retain dual boot for both XP 32-bit and Windows 8?

  • Tab title is wrong with ssh/screen on osx

    I am doing ssh -t host screen -D -RR in OS X (10.9) terminal tabs. My ~/.screenrc is identical on all remote hosts and contain the following line: hardstatus string "%H(%n:%t)$USER %h" My ~/.bashrc is also identical on all hosts. When I login to host host_u (Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS) running Screen version 4.00.03jw4 (FAU) 2-May-06, the tab title on the OS X terminal is host_u(1:bash)sds ~, as expected. When I login to host host_c (CentOS release 6.3 (Final)) running Screen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06, the tab title on the OS X terminal is ~/FooBar (which is the local OS X directory from which I ran the ssh/screen command. Problem: the hardstatus line does not work on host_c.

  • what does "Net user administrator /active:yes" do to a computer?

    i just purchased a new laptop and had some issues with it... I called tech support and they had me run this command in cmd prompt by right clicking the cmd icon and selecting "run as administrator" with root C:\windows\system32: "Net user administrator /active:no" after it was determined that it didn't fix the issue we ran this code "Net user administrator /active:yes" i then rebooted..and was asked for my windows login for my user account "Rees" as usual.. however ALL my settings where gone (including my desktop files) as though it was the first time I booted up. WHAT in the world happened with this command?? I desperately NEED my user accounts and files back to how they were!! (running windows 7) Please help!

  • Sync Iphone in Windows XP running as Virtualbox guest under Ubuntu 9.10

    I run (K)Ubuntu 9.10 as my main operating system, but I still have a valid XP license, so I've been running Windows XP as a guest operating system with Virtualbox 3.10. I cannot get Itunes (running under Windows XP) to detect the presence of my Iphone. I found this link: http://blog.rootshell.be/2009/01/15/iphone-itunes-virtualbox/ which explains how to get this Itunes-in-XP-in-Virtualbox-under-Ubuntu configuration to work, but it involves editing the file /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh which apparently does not exist in Ubuntu 9.10. Does anyone know how get Itunes in XP running as a guest in Ubuntu 9.10 to detect and sync with an Iphone?

    Is there a way to completely remove Mac OS X from MacBook Pro and replace it with Windows 7? I’m not talking about Boot Camp, I’m talking about completely wiping disk of any files and partitioning it for Windows installation. Any BIOS, booting, compatibility problems? I know it’s rare to replace Mac OS X for Windows, but I have this one situation where this is needed so I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

  • Internet connection sharing between Windows XP and Windows 7

    I bought my lil sister's netbooks for Christmas and I've been having a heck of a time trying to get Internet Connection Sharing to work. The host computer is a Windows XP box and it uses a US Cellular 3G modem dongle thingy to set it's Internet access. Additionally I have a hard wire plugged into the LAN1 port of the router described below. (I tried the WAN port out of desperation but things didn't seem happy that way.) Additionally they have a linksys router (can't remember specific model number, I will find this out) that I was using to take advantage of it's wireless capabilities. Originally thought about updating the router to use dd-wrt, but after reading the instructions it looked like to much of a pita (had to downgrade firmware, then install dd-wrt) to set up, eventually I caved, out of desperation, and ended up successfully installing dd-wrt on the router. I have DHCP turned off on the router, actually all I could select was DHCP forwarder. The netbooks both have windows 7 starter installed on them. Initially, I had the networks joined to a homegroup but I dropped that and everyone is able to see everyone in their respective network explorers. When I turn on Internet Connection Sharing on the host, its IP on the LAN changed to 192.168.0.1, so I arbitrarily decided to assign the router to port 192.168.0.100. When I connect the netbooks they get IPs dynamically. As I stated before, everyone can see everyone in the network explorer, and shares can be accessed. The weird thing is that everyone can ping the router but they cannot ping each others IPs. The status on the netbooks says that there is no Internet Connectivity. Another thing I tried was manually setting the DNS servers on the netbooks to the DNS servers that the host computer has. The funny thing is when I ping an outside domain such as google.com the IP address resolves, however I get no responses from the pings. When I tried plugging the host into the WAN port I could ping the router, nor could I access the router's web access admin. Another thing I tried was turning off the firewall on the netbooks and the firewall off on the host computer for the LAN connection, and they still could not ping each other. Also I thought I should be able to start a remote desktop connection but I couldn't do that either, I also checked to make sure that computers would in fact accept a request for remote desktop connections.

    I am looking to retire my HTPC. So much of what we do with it can be done with one of our video game consoles or an AppleTV that is seems like a waste of space, power and time to maintain. The trouble is that my wife does streaming yoga classes served up via specific websites. I am assuming they are Flash based and so far I have been unable to find Apps for these content providers. My question is, is there a GOOD way to handle flash-based or even HTML5/h.264 web content with one of the other Internet enabled devices in our stack? So far we have: Nintendo Wii Playstation 3 XBox 360 And we're looking to purchase a current generation AppleTV. update The sites are YogisAnonymmous.com and YogaJournal.com, both are confirmed as Flash.

  • Driverpack Solution makes a whole bunch of programs

    I am using Driver Pack solution 12.3 to update my drivers. I used it and installed 55 drivers. I noticed that there are now several dozen new entries in add/remove programs under the name Windows Driver Package - Intel hdc, Windows Driver Package - Intel System, and Windows Driver Package - Intel USB with the driverpack solution logo next to them. When I hit uninstall for any of these, it says all devices using this driver will be removed, and I am scared of uninstalling anything I do not know about. I have no system restore points before I updated my driver. Will these extra driver packages slow down my computer or take up extra disk space? Can I uninstall them safely? I am using Windows 8, so refreshing the computer is an option.

  • Rundeck get verbose output of command executing on node

    I have Rundeck executing a remote script, which is in python is using print statements to return output normally such as: $ python mytest.py PASS: Condition 1 passed PASS: Condition 2 passed PASS: and so on... When I run this via Rundeck, however, it doesn't show me the same print generated outputs as above. I know that the remote script is actually executing just as usual, as I'm receiving other emails generated by the ~30min long script. How can I get the same level of output in Rundeck as I do in the bash shell directly?

  • Is it possible (and safe/reliable/non-damaging) to use a 20-pin ATX PSU with a 24-pin ATX motherboar

    I have a reasonably-decent old 20-pin PSU which I want to use on a newer 24-pin ATX motherboard. I see that the ATX page on wikipedia mentions that 24-pin ATX is backward-compatible, and I can find 20-to-24 pin adapters to buy for a couple of dollars/pounds at lots of places, but I can't find any mention of restrictions on the use of these. Will this work on any motherboard, or is it a per-motherboard compatibility question? Are there any other restrictions like the level of power available (and hence the additional 4 pins with +12, +5 and +3.3V lines which are already on other pins)?

  • Debian software raid 1: boot from both disk

    I newly installed debian squeeze with software raid.The way I did was, as also given in this thread. I have 2 HDD with 500 GB each. For each of them, I created 3 partitions (/boot, / and swap) I selected the hard drive and created a new partition table I created a new partition that was 1GB. I then specified to use the partition as a Physical Volume for RAID. and used for /boot and enabled bootable. Created another partition, which is of 480 GB, and then specified to use the partition as a Physical Volume for RAID. and used for /. Created another partion and used for swap Then RAID configuration: Through Configure RAID menu - create MD device - (2 for the number of drives, 0 for spare devices) Next select the partitions you want to be members of /dev/MD0. I selected /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 (for /boot) Next select the partitions you want to be members of /dev/MD1. I selected /dev/sda6 and /dev/sdb6 (for /) And no RAID for swap partitions 'Finish Partitioning and write changes to disk' -- Finish the rest of the install like normal Everything is ok now, except I am not sure how to test my raid config. When I pull the power of the HDD, it only boots from one disk. I read in some forum that I may have to install GRUB manually on the other. In Debian Squeeze, there is no grub command. Not sure how to make my software raid bootable from both disk. Also, please comment on my steps above. Anything unusual. I configured /boot partitions of both disks to be boot=yes.     I am having major issues with my bios and I have tried three different forums in hopes that there is someone out there that can help me.... The issue is that every single time I turn off my computer, when I turn it back on the bios resets and tries to boot from a floppy drive....first problem is I dont have a floppy drive and secondly it does not read my HDD.... I tried everything to fix this...I tried replacing the cmos battery, I tried replacing the sata cable, and I tried a different sata port....none of these things seem to be working. Now the messed up part about all of this is that i am on my computer right now....If I take the battery out and put it back in and setup the bios again manually I am able to get into my computer...but this is NOT normal... Why is my bios resetting constantly when I power down my computer? Please assist me I need my computer for business

    Hi, When you download files from Google Code now (example), in addition to the text version of the SHA1 hash, it includes a QR code of it. The device that the file was downloaded to is the one that has to hash the file. But, if it can download the file (ie, has access to the webpage), it also has access to the text version of the hash, so the QR code seems completely useless—and more work to decode when the raw text is available. How would reading the hash into a mobile phone allow you to verify the file you download to the computer? Or if you download the file to the phone, how would you use the phone to take a picture of the QR code displayed on the webpage on its own screen? Does anyone know what the point to the QR code is or how you would use it to verify the downloaded file (I don’t mean QR codes in general, but specifically in this context).

  • Usage of putty in command line from Hudson

    Hi, I'm trying to use putty in command line from an hudson job. The command is the following one: putty -ssh -2 -P 22 USERNAME@SERVER_ADDR -pw PASS -m command.txt Where 'command.txt' is a shell script to execute in the server through SSH. If i launch this command from the Window command prompt, it works, the shell script is executed on the server machine. If i launch a build of the hudson job configured with this batch command, it doesn't work. The build is running... and running... and running.. without doing anything, and i have to stop it manually. So my question is: Is it possible to launch an external programm (i.e. putty) from an hudson job ? ps: i tried SSH plugin but... not a really good plugin (pre/post build, fail status of the commands launched not caught by hudson, etc.) Thanks in advance for your help.   • Secure login for Firefox alternatives

    For some reason, Secure Login 0.9.3. on FF 3.5.4. is relatively buggy (it randomly stops working saying it is not compatible, but continues to work after I uninstall it and reinstall afterwards ... then it stops working after some time. No new extensions were added in the meantime; just BitDefender was installed on the system ... not sure whether he has something to do with it.). What would be good alternatives to it (except RoboForm) which give the same behaviour ? All ideas welcomed.

Hello everyone One of my system is really old, but I still use it, right now, the HDD is and old IDE drive that is starting to fail (I got to many damaged sectors) and I'm planing to replace it. The motherboard supports Serial ATA 1 and I have a real nice offer on a SATA 2 drive, can I use that drive on a SATA 1 interface (obviously with reduced speed) just like a USB 2.0 device on a 1.0 port?
