• Where should the web server root directory go in linux?

  I see that Apache and Nginx both use var/www as their web root - but that directory is not covered in the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. I also see some servers with the web root in the /home/username/www directory. So where does the web root go? Or rather, where should it go most of the time for the common web server?

  I have been breaking my head at this, reading almost every article and tutorial there is on the web, but nothing doing.. i still cannot get my first web service application to work.   In this weekend I made one of my new apps run on Windows Azure. I am building this application using ASP.NET MVC 3 RC and Razor view engine. In this posting I will list DLL-s you need to have as local copies to get ASP.NET MVC 3 RC run on Windows Azure web role. Besides assemblies that are already references you may need to add references to some more assemblies. List of assemblies is here: Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure System.Web.Helpers System.Web.Mvc System.Web.Razor System.Web.WebPages System.Web.WebPages.Razor WebMatrix.Data You can find Razor and ASP.NET Web Pages related assemblies from folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET Web Pages\v1.0\Assemblies\ NB! If your project is using dynamically loaded assemblies that are not referenced from any of your project make sure you are including them as project items that are located in bin folder. This way these DLL-s are also put to deployment package and you don’t have to create code level references to them.

  A java.net article, rich in practical resources, by IBM India Labs’ Sathiskumar Palaniappan, Kavitha Varadarajan, and Jayashree Viswanathan, explores the challenge of writing code in a way that that effectively makes use of the resources of modern multicore processors and multiprocessor servers.As the article states: “Many server applications, such as Web servers, application servers, database servers, file servers, and mail servers, maintain worker queues and thread pools to handle large numbers of short tasks that arrive from remote sources. In general, a ‘worker queue’ holds all the short tasks that need to be executed, and the threads in the thread pool retrieve the tasks from the worker queue and complete the tasks. Since multiple threads act on the worker queue, adding tasks to and deleting tasks from the worker queue needs to be synchronized, which introduces contention in the worker queue.” The article goes on to explain ways that developers can reduce contention by maintaining one queue per thread. • Should all new web projects build their backend based on xml/json result sets?

  If you were building a new Saas project, would it make sense to start with all of the backend services returning xml/json? Because these days you need to build for both the web and mobile devices, and having a backend that is build from the start to return xml and json, you are ready to go mobile (all services have the business logic, so you won't be repeating anything). Now the web would be MVC, so the controller would just be routing the request to your service backend, and converting the json or xml to html. The obviousl downside is that you have to build a backend, and then another web project that calls your backend. But this also goes to you favor as it forces you to seperate your concerns, and not leak business logic in your controller/view layer. Thoughts?

RFC4408 defines SPF records, but it seems it’s not really used https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4408#section-3.1.1 Is that right? Should I create both TXT and SPF ? Thanks

Fresh web-services with some new idea, not big portals but something simple yet useful and used by many people, something simple and new. What aspects of my developer career should I focus to be able to build such things on my own if I have enough ideas? (Sure if it ends up being popular I can get more developers to help me and so on, but at first I can do it alone, right?) I am currently a PHP web-developer, I know HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery. But even like that there still is web-design, there are a lot of paths: websites for enterprise, startups, webservices, entertainment websites and serious bank/document flow systems, frameworks used for big systems, different approaches for little ones, etcetcetc. Which path should I take to be able to start my own projects like the ones that I listed on top which inspire me?

  I know what a Web API is. I've written API's in multiple languages (including in MVC3). I'm also well practiced in ASP.Net. I just discovered that MVC4 has "Web API" and without going through the video examples I can't find a good explanation of what exactly it IS. From my past experience, Microsoft technologies (especially ASP.Net) have a tendency to take a simple concept and wrap it in a bunch of useless overhead that is meant to make everything "easier". Can someone please explain to me what Web API in MVC4 is exactly? Why do I need it? Why can't I just write my own API?

• How do I allow all possible IPs for Gmail servers through my ufw firewall?

  I am currently using the following rule: ufw allow out from my_local_ip to any port 587 This is a little too lax for my liking. I would like to tighten it up and restrict it to only gmail's smtp server ip addresses, but they are always changing. I used to just wait until an outgoing email didn't make it to its destination, then check syslog for the ip address that was blocked, then add that to the ufw configure script. However, now I have a need for much more reliability. Is there any way to use smtp.gmail.com in ufw? I don't think so, but thought I would ask. Any other ideas? Thanks.

On SO PHP-book question, the highest rated book is "PHP Objects, Patterns and Practice". However, I'm not sure if it's a book to start PHP with... or is it? Most of the books mentioned in that SO question seem to be for those who already know PHP. I considered "PHP & MySQL Web Development, 4th Ed.", but someone mentioned that "it uses the mysql_* functions which are almost deprecated." Help?

  We have several web applications running on several load-balanced servers. We want to have our web applications communicate with each other without first traversing outside the load balancer. For example: http://appA.example.com is running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 http://appB.example.com is also running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 The load balancer's public IP address is 198.51.100.3 By default, when appA on 192.0.2.1 makes a call to a WCF service hosted in appB, the HTTP request is routed to 192.51.100.3; this establishes a new session and the load balancer will direct the call to either of the two servers We want the call to be routed to the instance of appB running on the same server so we add 192.0.2.1 appB.example.com to the hosts file on 192.0.2.1. This eventually works, but we either have to wait for the app pool to naturally recycle or do a manual reset before appA sees the new address. Is there any way to have the change automatically detected without having to recycle the app pool?

The site has a good traffic (500 users per day), is currently promoted by Google in Google Chrome Webstore, and the ajax requests are crawlable, following Google's guidelines (https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/). Although I understand there is not much content, beyond the user-generated, I really don't what else should I include in the site. Perhaps adding contact and about pages, and maybe another section would increase the navigation. Google argues I need a "fully launched and functioning site, allowing users to navigate throughout your site with a menu, sitemap, or appropiate links". They also ask for "full sentences or paragraphs" Isn't a Google Adsense solutions for Web Applications? Would all the web-apps have to include useless navigable subpages?
