• How to kill volume when headphones pulled out

  I often use headphones in order to listen to music in work time. However my chair tends to occasionally have the tendency to yank the headphone cable from my laptop. Now with my Android phone this wouldn't be a problem as the music will automatically stop playing. However, Windows does not kill the volume and instead re-routes the sound to my laptop internal speaker system. Aside from turning off my laptop speakers - is there a small utility available which serves my purpose of killing the volume so my work associates aren't inflicted with erroneous musical tastes?

• How to properly store dotfiles in a centralized git repository

  I'd like to put all my dotfiles (like .profile, .gitconfig, etc.) in a central git repository, so I can more easily keep track of the changes. I did this, but I would like to know how to properly handle keeping them in sync with the actual ones in ~/. I thought that you could just hard link the two using ln, but this does not seem to work as I expected, i.e., if I edit one file, the other does not change. Maybe I misused the ln command, or else I misunderstand how hard links work. How do people usually do this? Judging by GitHub, it's a pretty popular thing to do, so surely there's a seamless way to do it that someone has come up with. By the way, I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.

• NFSv4 - ACLs not working

  I've setup an NFSv4 server (Debian) and client (Ubuntu/Mythbuntu). It seems that uid username mapping is working nicely out-of-the-box (I get correct usernames on ls -l if the usernames match between the two boxes, even if the uids don't), but ACLs are not working. I've installed nfs4-acl-tools and I can read the ACLs correctly on the client, but they don't get applied. What needs to be done for ACLs to work? To clarify; username mapping works for regular permissions. ACLs are applied using uid/gid (I can even set ACLs by uid and they work).

• DNS is resolving fine but can't access the server (unless changing /etc/hosts)

  Hi all, I have a VPS server with a public IP, I added some A entries in my name server like svn.example.com - 1.1.1.1 Also I added some entries in my workstation /etc/hosts file in order to work with the domains meanwhile the DNSs were refreshed. It's been around 3 days from this and I configures everything in my server (using the hosts file), the DNSs are ready and I removed the entries but for my surprise I can access the servers nor anything in my domain or sub-domains (even a ping doesn't work). I've triple checked and the DNSs are OK. I don't know too much about DNSs . Any help would be appreciated. The IP address of my VPS is 74.63.223.43 I have these domain names, all pointing to the same IP (using A entries) hartoingenio.com www.hartoingenio.com svn.hartoingenio.com

• DSL-504T as dumb ADSL modem

  I am trying to setup an existing DSL-504T ADSL router to work as a dumb modem for a DIR-825 wifi router. I am assuming I should try and move as much of the control to the DIR-825 as possible. It's a PPPoA connection so I don't think I can use bridge mode. Does anyone have any guidance on this? Should I have 2 subnets? Should I set the DIR-825 as the DMZ on the DSL-504T? Do I need to keep NAT and firewall enabled on DSL-504T? Basically I have it working but want to know if I have set it up correctly as I really want the QoS to work on the DIR-825.

• Linux: How to rename old mysqld when upgrading MySQL?

  I'm upgrading MySQL from MySQL 5.0 to Percona Server 5.1. I'm planning to just use yum remove and yum install to do the upgrade. However, I read in the documentation that it's a good idea to rename the old mysqld to mysqld-5.0. And if the upgrade doesn't work, I could just revert back to the old version. How exactly does this work? If I use yum remove, doesn't that mean the old mysqld is removed? So how do I rename it? Where is mysqld located? How do I find it? Thanks.

• Windows Azure openSUSE: rcnetwork not starting

  I have a Linux VM in Azure, created from their default image. My problem is simply that the init script network doesn't look like to start, so dependent services (apache, postfix...) won't start. If I run yast runlevel and try to start postfix it asks me to start network first: if I accept, network is started without errors and then postfix is started. While network is configured to start on boot, it just doesn't appear to have started. Anyway, SSH connections work fine. Currently, I had to edit my init scripts and remove network from the Required-Start list, but that didn't work for posftix (even after running systemctl --system daemon-reload). How can I fix all this?

  I have a system running RHEL 5.5, and I am trying to mount a Windows share on a server using autofs. (Due to the network not being ready upon startup, I do not want to utilize fstab.) I am able to mount the shares manually, but autofs is just not mounting them. Here are the files I am working with: At the end of /etc/auto.master, I have: ## Mount this test share: /test /etc/auto.test --timeout=60 In /etc/auto.test, I have: test -fstype=cifs,username=testuser,domain=domain.com,password=password ://server/test I then restart the autofs service. However, this does not work. ls-ing the directory does not return any results. I have followed all these guides on the web, and I either don't understand them, or they.just.don't.work. Thank You

  Hello my dear friends! We have a marvellous squid proxy with dansguardian for filetering and they both work just great. Is there any easy way to limit the total bandwidth usage? I'd like to set the max amount of squid users internet use to 1200 since our total band is 2000 and I need the rest to ensure other services such as voip to work without hiccups related to huge downloads on the "internet side" of our connection and similar issues. • Connecting a USB laptop to a RJ45 serial port

  We are about to get our first managed switch at work (Procurve 2520G-24-PoE), and this lowly programmer gets to put on his admin hat and try to configure it. The switch has an RJ45 serial port for console access. My laptop has USB ports but no serial port. In fact, there isn't a single computer in the office with a serial port. I've seen USB-to-DB9 adapters, but I need to go from USB to RJ45 (serial). How would I go about accomplishing this? Do I need two adapters? Will USB-to-DB9 and then DB9-to-RJ45 work?   I have set up an alias in /etc/mail/aliases like this: user: [email protected] This relay DOES work when I telnet to example.com 25 and send mail to [email protected] (where example.com is my domain); it indeed turns up in [email protected] inbox. Also mail sent from my server at example.com is generally deliverable to this same email address, [email protected]. HOWEVER, the relay DOES NOT work when I send mail from [email protected] to [email protected], expecting it to be relayed back to [email protected]. The mail.log shows it being received and sent just fine, so I guess it is being blocked by gmail for some reason. Why though? As I said, gmail generally does except mail from this server.

I found at for this, and it seems to work fine if I run: echo "ls -al / > /home/florin/test.txt" | at 4:21am But I want to run a different thing: /usr/bin/firefox -new-tab http://google.ro I tried adapting the first line with my action (running it in terminal opens a new Firefox tab with http://google.ro, so the command is correct), but with at, it does not work: echo "firefox -new-tab http://google.ro" | at 4:23am The task seems to be scheduled, but it does not run. When running the previous line I get the default reply from at: warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh Should my Firefox command be differently run in sh?   Spin off question Is it possible to hack a SIM card to add a javacard application on it (to properly format international numbers)? If yes, how? Original Question In my previous phone carrier I could just dial +55 11 99883655 and it would just work. Now I moved to a new carrier and it doesn't work anymore! When I dial the same international number it keeps saying the number isn't formated correctly. How can I get my iPhone to understand international numbering back again? • Problem with usb wireless mouse

  Recently I have started having problems with my wireless mouse (Wireless Optical Mouse MI-4910D). Sometimes when I start my PC or during a game the pointer/arrow stops moving. When the PC boots the pointer is locked in the center of the screen. If I'm lucky it helps to change the USB wireless adapter from port 1 to port 2 but sometimes this trick doesn't work and I have to restart my PC to get the mouse to work again. Like you can see in the product web page this mouse don't have a driver but only a tool to solve some problems.   My google-fu must be sucking. i havent been able to find a good solution for the following: numerous Linux server on commodity hardware Trying to do a recovery mirror copy to external harddrives External harddrives are smaller than source harddrives, but larger than data External drives are connected via usb2 (slow) Servers range from 20GB of data to 400GB of data Servers are remote, so hands on access is a pain need to copy boot files. empty external drives currently Basicly, looking for a way to do use a ghosting solution from INSIDE a running linux server to an external harddrive, without booting a cd etc. the rsync/cpio solutions i've looked at dont work great with grub/dev/proc etc. I understand that since the system isnt offline, it wont be a "mirror" image as files change, but thats ok. Are there any free/commercial products that would work?

  This problem started w/ my sons desktop, it would just shut off after a bit of work or stay on for a long time & to get it to unfreeze is to cold boot it, i put a new HDD in & I still have the same issue, RAM is good power supply fan is moving quite as well as all the rest of the fans it has stayed fairly dust free, i'm at a loss ,I have defaulted all the factory settings changed battery & ungraded to a new OS. I still have the same problem. the power light stays on after it has shut down & when upon starting it goes straight to safe mode option page, I start in last good config. reboots again takes 30 sec. to boot & will work again for a while, the only other thing I haven't tried was a graphic card replace, i'm onboard video now & have been.

• I need to access another user's files.

  My system is an HP netbook running Ubuntu 10 netbook edition from a USB drive. I created an admin account and user account, and left in place the 'ubuntu' account. My netbook came with Windows 7 factory loaded and I did some work in Windows before setting up Linux. I copied my work into the HP Tools FAT32 partition that also came Factory Loaded, and was only 20% full. Only the 'ubuntu' account shows the HP Tools partition. So I would like to either view the partition from the 'admin' or 'user' accounts, or copy files from the partition-to a folder accessible from admin or user. I have already tried right clicking the folder, selecting share, and installing the share package, but I got a string of errors and would prefer a short term, one time solution that does not involve installing the share package. All I need is a few plain text Windows files i was working on.

• Exchange 2010 Internal Auto Discover Migrate away from current .local DNS name

  We have an Exchange 2010 Server, running within our Active Directory domain, with an internal hostname of server.example.local. The server is configured for Exchange anywhere, but currently has a self signed certificate with a name of server.example.local installed. Internally, clients connect and work fine, but externally, we are having certificate errors as you would expect. I'm about to purchase a UCC SSL Certificate to install on the server with all the relevant SANs on the certificate to correct this, but due to obvious problem obtaining a trusted cert with .local as a subject alternative name, I'm looking to configure clients on the internal network so that they don't use any reference to the .local hostname. I've configured our external DNS name for the server as exchange.example.com, and have created an CNAME for autodiscover.example.com which also (correctly) points to exchange.example.com. I've also configured internal DNS records for these two hostnames which point to the internal interface of the same server. I don't anticipate any problems here. I'm now trying to reconfigure Auto Discover internally, so that Outlook attempts to connect to exchange.example.com. I've followed the steps in KB940726 to prepare for this, and this appeared to work fine. No errors were generated and I was able to verify the CAS name in AD using ADSI edit. I've just tried testing this with a newly created test user account complete with a new Exchange mailbox, and Outlook 2007 connects fine on the internal network, but looking deeper in the Exchange profile, Outlook is still resolving the server name as server.example.local. Could it be the self signed cert, that is causing Outlook to display the server name as server.example.local, or is there still something wrong with my internal autodiscover configuration? Edit I've proven it isn't the certificate that is responsible for outlook returning server.example.local, by installing another self certified certificate with a name of test.example.com. When creating a new outlook profile, I get the mismatch error I'm expceting, but after accepting the cert, and finishing the config of the Outlook profile, again it still shows server.example.local as the server name. This means that if I were to purchase the UCC cert now, that external client would work fine, but internal clients would show a certificate name mismatch. Any ideas where to start diagnosing this?

• Accessing localhost via IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 very slow

  (I've asked this over on stackoverflow already, but thought I'd ask here as well) I'm currently running an ASP.NET application on IIS 7.5 on Windows 7. When I access this application on Internet Explorer (either 6, 7 or 8) it is incredible slow and often fails to load at all. There are messages at the bottom saying: Waiting for http://localhost/....... or sometimes waiting for about:blank (I've read that this can be a virus, but I've run all the usual checks and it's not). constantly, but it returns with the usual: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" I've also tried this by using 127.0.0.1 and the machine name, with the same results. I've tried the same application on the latest Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera and they all work fine. I've also installed the same application on a Windows Server 2003 machine, and it all works fine via Internet Explorer. I've also turned off the IPv6 setting on the LAN connection. Soes anyone have any ideas why this doesn't work with Internet Explorer and yet does with other browsers?

• Is giving read permissions on /etc/shadow to apache user a wise decision from security point of view?

  I have to use PAM authentication for DAV SVN, but when everything is configured as specified in mod_auth_pam documentation, authentication does not work. After some research I realized, that for this to work, httpd should be running under root user (which I don't like and won't implement) or apache user (under which httpd is running by default) should have permissions to read /etc/shadow file. So there is a pair of questions connected to each other which I want to ask: Is giving this permition to apache user a wise decision from security point of view? If answer to the first question is "yes", what is the correct way to do so? For now I've done following: groupadd shadow usermod -G shadow apache chmod g+r /etc/shadow Another way I can come up with is using acl: setfacl -m u:apache:r /etc/shadow Note: OS is Fedora 14 x86_64 (kernel: 2.6.35.11) httpd v2.2.17 mod_auth_pam v1.1.1

• iPod Touch 2g not recognised by iTunes (more information inside)

  My iPod Touch isn't being recognised by iTunes. Details: iPod Touch: 2nd generation / Laptop: Windows Vista / iTunes: latest version I have tried: using different cables; restarted my laptop and iPod. reinstalled iTunes. restarting services that were made by Apple; putting my iPod into restore mode; resetting my iPod; and still no luck getting it to be recognised by iTunes. This iPod works on other computers, and different iPod's work on my laptop. When I stopped all of the Apple services on my laptop, I got a message from iTunes when I connected my iPod saying that I needed to enable the services for it to work. But when I did enable the services again, the iPod still didn't show up on iTunes. I can't think what else I can do to solve the problem. Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance!
