Missing HDD space - says 65GB used, selecting all folders shows 40GB used

Hi Running Windows Server 2008, 74GB raptor drive and noticed we only had about 500MB left - yikes! So deleted some old backups we don't need, but can't track down where about 25GB seems to be taken up. If I go to C: and select all folders and go to properties, this comes to around 40GB but in My Computer I can see 65GB is used. How can I find out whats eating the space? Just IIS + MSSQL Express + Smartermail on the server EDIT Checked to show hidden folders plus protected operating system files - 41.8GB usage, so 24.6GB is missing somewhere. Theres no system restore even installed on the server

Redundant Web Space

I have following problem. My domain is registred on service "A" My web-space (not a server) is on Godaddy. Once a week is my service unreacheble I am sure that is godaddy problem. My idea is to by some webspace of one different service to make my service redundant. Note: My service is only few html files with javascrit. I dont' need to sync But how to do it? How do you initialize networking on a new Xen guest VM?

We have a Citrix XenServer setup, and while I personally lean more towards Dev than Ops, I've got an issue that's been bugging me. When you provision a new (Linux/Ubuntu) guest, how do you get it to have the correct IP-address? I'd want my application servers to exist in the range of 10.20.0.0/24, preferably being .1, .2, etc, so I can keep my sanity. I guess that the actual IP-address is something set in Linux itself, and Xen can't touch that, but then what's the best practice for getting it done? If you set up DHCP, don't you just move the problem to getting the adapters the "correct" MAC-addresses? Do you just have to hardcode a large table of MAC-addresses to IP-addresses, and then provision new guests always with the correct MAC-address on the virtual ethernet adapter? What we currently do is have an image of a "app server" that we boot up a new instance of, and then finalize it (with a script) that (among other things) modifies the /etc/networking/interface file to give it the correct IP. But that feels dirty to me, and I feel like surely there must a better way. Please enlighten me?

How much space do NTFS hardlinks/symlinks occupy?

Well, I guess it must be something proportional to the original filename plus the new filename for symlinks, and only the new filename for hardlinks, but how does this affect the disk space exactly? I just made a folder with about a hundred thousand symbolic links in it, and the folder still reported 0 bytes usage. I may be mistaken, but I even think the free capacity of the drive remained the same. Then I permanently deleted the folder and the sizes still stayed the same. Could I fill up a hard disk just with symlinks? Or does NTFS have limitations in that no more than x symlinks are allowed on one drive/in one folder, so the capacity of the drive cannot be reached?

Does disabling BIOS shadowing increase free RAM space?

Hi, I know in these days this is very stupid question, but for study purposes. I read that when PC starts, CPU is set to read adress just under the 4GB. There should BIOS be mapped to by memory controller. My question is, in old days, had disabling BIOS shadowing actually freed some RAM for you? I mean, even when BIOS was not shadowed to RAM directly, still adresses for BIOS MMIO access were wasted. And when you cant adress it, its like there is no extra space gained.

Word 2007 "Out of Memory or Disk Space" Error on launch

Word 2007 is installed on a Vista Home Premium machine and whenever it starts up it opens what appears to be a dynamic installer to do something and then throws up the "Out of Memory or Disk Space" error. Word 2007 never completes starting up. Reinstalling Word hasn't helped and if I can avoid reinstalling Windows until Windows 7 is released and get Word working in the mean time, that would be ideal. I've been looking around for a solution, once of which seemed to point to a problem with the user account. I created a second user on the machine and Word still had the same problem. The other solution that seems possible is a corrupted normal.dot/normal.dotm file. However, even in the location it should be, I can't seem to find it. Am I going in the right direction with this? Is there another solution I haven't come across that will fix this? If it is possible that renaming normal.dot/normal.dotm how can I find it?

How to resize a ubuntu partition to make more room for windows

My laptop has Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10 installed alongside each other. My laptop has two 225GB hard drives. I give Ubuntu 133.65GB and I give Windows 87.76GB on the same hard drive (C). My problem now is that Windows is almost out of space but Ubuntu is only using a few GB of the 133.65GB that I gave it. I want to reduce Ubuntu's partition size and give that space to increase Windows partition size. Is that any program that can to do this?

Can't burn 8.1G iso onto 8.4GB DVD - "Media does not have enough free space"

I'm trying to burn a dvd on a mac with an external (firewire-connected) dvd drive. I'm checking the size of the iso thus: DVD-4:dvd_files macbook$ ls -l /tmp/hybrid.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 macbook wheel 8700884992 Aug 22 10:57 /tmp/hybrid.iso DVD-4:dvd_files macbook$ ls -lh /tmp/hybrid.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 macbook wheel 8.1G Aug 22 10:57 /tmp/hybrid.iso The "human-readable" size is 8.1 Gig but when i try to burn, onto an 8.4G dual-layer dvd, it says "Media does not have enough free space" The definition of a "Gigabyte" according to Wikipedia is 1 billion bytes, so the iso size should actually be 8.7 Gig according to this definition, in which case the disk definitely isn't big enough, and it's just that the -h option to ls is misleading. Is the discrepancy just due to the ls command using a different definition of "G" (eg 1024 Meg aka 1.07 Gig? This comes out as 8.103 which fits what ls is displaying)

Onboard Ethernet suddenly stopped working to router

Hey guys, yesterday I have a sudden problem of my Ethernet connection to my router. My computer is a Pendium 4 with Window XP SP3 running on it and it was working fine earlier in the day, but yesterday night was the start of the problem. My computer is unable to ping to the router and to any other website and unable to get internet connection. As beside it was connected to a hub, I directly connected it to the router directly and the same problem occurred, being unable to ping to the router (and connecting to it) and still no internet access. My directly connected to the modem and the problem still persisted. For each connection, I connected it to my computer and my laptop and my laptop was able to connect, while my desktop computer was unable. I wondered if it was a OS issue and ran a live Ubuntu CD to see if Ubuntu was able to connect to the internet, but the issue persisted and I was unable to get internet access. I then set my router's lease time to 1 hour and waited. After 1 hour, the lease for my computer was removed and I hoped this worked, but it didn't work, but something strange is acting up. My desktop computer is still unable to ping to the router or connect to the internet, but for some reason, my router and desktop computer is still able to contact each other by providing a lease of an local ip address. The router record of a lease to my desktop computer, and when I do ipconfig, my desktop also recognize that it has been provided a local ip address. I have concluded that this is a hardware issue and the only solution to fix this is to by a network card adapter, but I am wondering if anyone has any solutions that could explain why this happen, why my mac address is 01-23-45-67-89-ab, and is there any way to fix it without buying a new network card? Munin "Available entropy" when using adress space layout randomization

Having just configured munin for statistics logging on my gentoo server (hardened profile), I am noticing that my "Available entropy" is consitently in the 200-300 range. This seems way to low, so I checked it manually using the command $ cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail 3544 Odd. Consistently very low values in Munin and practically filled up when checking manually. After thinking about the problem for a while I came to the conclusion that the problem is probably that I'm using Adress Space Layout Randomization which is using the entropy when running commands/programs. Since Munin runs a whole slew of programs all the entropy is used up, and Munin then measures how much entropy there is, resulting in the low values. Does anyone have any experience with this? How can this be avoided?

Hi - first question on serverfault - pls excuse if asked elsewhere. I have a Dell Precision 690 with one 73GB (15000RPM) SAS drive in it. Running Windows 7 (x64) with a bunch of apps means it is running out of space. I have on order a 147GB (15000RPM) SAS drive (same GB/s, same make) which I want to put into the machine. Not knowing anything about SAS, do I need to replace the 73GB with the 147GB and restore from a backup, or can I put the drive in the machine and get the controller to treat the two drives as one large one? (The original paperwork for the machine says 73GB SAS (No RAID) if that is relevant.) Thanks in advance.

Transaction log is full and does not free up space

Hi, I have a database in SQL Server 2005 whose transaction log becomes full. It is using snapshot replication. I noticed the transaction log is not freeing up space. So I created an additional transaction log. Three days has passed and this first transaction log is still full. I performed a full database backup and transaction backup. Then I tried to shrink the transaction log but the shrink failed. Can anyone advise why shrinking transaction log is failing? ANy other recommendation on how to resolve the problem?

Windows 7 Extend C Volume to Unallocated Space

a while back I installed Ubuntu and then later uninstalled it by I think deleting the partitions and recovering the windows 7 boot loader. I am not that experienced with partitioning yet. As you can see here there are two partitions that are now unallocated. The 9gb one is a recovery or something that came with the computer. How can I extend my C partition to use both of those? I do not want to have that much storage just wasted sitting there. Problems if I simply do RewriteRule ^fake$ http://localhost/wordpress/gallery [L] it works but the address in the browser changes, which is no good, if I do RewriteRule ^fake$ /wordpress/gallery [L] I get a 404. I tried different flags instead of [L] but to no avail. How can I get this to work?

how to read an address in multiple formats like google maps

notice that on google maps you can input the address any way you like. as long as it is a valid address...google maps will read it. In some ruby book I had seen code snippet for something like this, but with phone numbers. Any ideas how this could be done for addresses? in language of your choice. Facebook profile search using email address of a user

Hello, If I have email address of a user, is there any way to find the profile of the user? I know it can be done using the uid and name of the user (GetInfo() or fql.query). The specific problem I am trying to address is when I search for a user using the name field, I end up getting multiple results (people with the same name). I have the email address of the user I want to search, so if I can search using email address, I will be able to reach to the specific user. Alternately, if there's a way to find uid for a given email address, I can get the user I am looking for. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

How to simulate pressure with particles?

I'm trying to simulate pressure with a collection of spherical particles in a Unity game I'm building. A couple notes about the problem: The goal is to fill a constantly changing 2d space/void with small, frictionless spheres. The game is trying to simulate the ever-growing pressure of more objects being shoved into this space. The level itself is constantly scrolling from left to right, meaning if the space's dimensions are not changed by the user it will automatically get smaller (the leftmost part of the space will continually scroll off-screen). I'm wondering what some approaches are that I can take to tackling these problems... Knowing when to detect when there is space to fill and then add spheres to the space. Removing spheres from the space when it is shrinking. Strategies to simulate pressure on the spheres such that they "explode outwards" when more space is created. The current approach I am contemplating is using a constantly moving wall, that is off screen and moves with the screen, as this image illustrates: . This moving wall will push and trap the spheres into the space. As for adding new spheres, I was going to have either (1) spheres replicate themselves upon detecting free space, OR (2) spawn them at the left side of the space (where the wall is) - pushing the rest of the spheres to fill the space. I foresee problems with idea #1 because this likely wouldn't really create/simulate pressure; idea #2 seems more promising, but raises the question of how to provide a location for these new sphere particles to spawn (and the ramifications of spawning them when there IS no space). What Keeps You from Changing Your Public IP Address and Wreaking Havoc on the Internet?

What exactly is preventing you (or anyone else) from changing their IP address and causing all sorts of headaches for ISPs and other Internet users? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Whitemage is curious about what’s preventing him from wantonly changing his IP address and causing trouble: An interesting question was asked of me and I did not know what to answer. So I’ll ask here. Let’s say I subscribed to an ISP and I’m using cable internet access. The ISP gives me a public IP address of 60.61.62.63. What keeps me from changing this IP address to, let’s say, 60.61.62.75, and messing with another consumer’s internet access? For the sake of this argument, let’s say that this other IP address is also owned by the same ISP. Also, let’s assume that it’s possible for me to go into the cable modem settings and manually change the IP address. Under a business contract where you are allocated static addresses, you are also assigned a default gateway, a network address and a broadcast address. So that’s 3 addresses the ISP “loses” to you. That seems very wasteful for dynamically assigned IP addresses, which the majority of customers are. Could they simply be using static arps? ACLs? Other simple mechanisms? Two things to investigate here, why can’t we just go around changing our addresses, and is the assignment process as wasteful as it seems? The Answer SuperUser contributor Moses offers some insight: Cable modems aren’t like your home router (ie. they don’t have a web interface with simple point-and-click buttons that any kid can “hack” into). Cable modems are “looked up” and located by their MAC address by the ISP, and are typically accessed by technicians using proprietary software that only they have access to, that only runs on their servers, and therefore can’t really be stolen. Cable modems also authenticate and cross-check settings with the ISPs servers. The server has to tell the modem whether it’s settings (and location on the cable network) are valid, and simply sets it to what the ISP has it set it for (bandwidth, DHCP allocations, etc). For instance, when you tell your ISP “I would like a static IP, please.”, they allocate one to the modem through their servers, and the modem allows you to use that IP. Same with bandwidth changes, for instance. To do what you are suggesting, you would likely have to break into the servers at the ISP and change what it has set up for your modem. Could they simply be using static arps? ACLs? Other simple mechanisms? Every ISP is different, both in practice and how close they are with the larger network that is providing service to them. Depending on those factors, they could be using a combination of ACL and static ARP. It also depends on the technology in the cable network itself. The ISP I worked for used some form of ACL, but that knowledge was a little beyond my paygrade. I only got to work with the technician’s interface and do routine maintenance and service changes. What keeps me from changing this IP address to, let’s say, 60.61.62.75 and mess with another consumer’s internet access? Given the above, what keeps you from changing your IP to one that your ISP hasn’t specifically given to you is a server that is instructing your modem what it can and can’t do. Even if you somehow broke into the modem, if 60.61.62.75 is already allocated to another customer, then the server will simply tell your modem that it can’t have it. David Schwartz offers some additional insight with a link to a white paper for the really curious: Most modern ISPs (last 13 years or so) will not accept traffic from a customer connection with a source IP address they would not route to that customer were it the destination IP address. Change iPhone MAC address

Hello, is it possible to change the iPhone MAC address? I have used ifconfig [interface] ether 01:02:03:04:05:06, but the MAC address does not change. Perhaps Apple has disabled the corresponding sysctl and it is necessary to patch the kernel.
