  • What SDK I should choose on Amazon Web Service to build API on server app?

    I am a newbie on Amazon Web Service. I have a task that setup then build a web service that provide APIs to Mac OS, iOS, Android client. There are some APIs and Database need to be kept in secure. I see that AWS support multiple platform such as Java, .Net, PHP,... It also support many Database Management System. Not yet, there are 2 special SDK for Android and iOS app. So, What should I choose (Java, .Net, PHP,...) to carry out my task? Does AWS support all webservice protocol? Does it support secure webservice? Thanks a lot.

  • Is it possible to choose the Amazon Glacier Vault when backing up from Synology NAS?

    I am using Amazon Glacier Backup on a Synology NAS (rackstation). But the Synology backup software for glacier does not allow me to choose the vault to backup to. This means I can not give my own name to the vault, but also I can not backup to a previously created vault (I also have this problem now after replacing a Synology rackstation). Is there any way to choose to which vault you want your Synology to backup to? Edit: I have now posted this question to the Synology forum also: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=174&t=86557&e=0 If I can solve the problem I'll post the solutions here also.

  • EC2 instance is blocking all outbound connections, how to diagnose/fix?

    My EC2 instance is blocking all outbound connections. wget http://www.google.com ==> Hangs ping google.com ==>hangs ssh user@anyserver ==>hangs I ran : sudo iptables -F to eliminate all rules to no avail AWS Management console shows Security Group for that instance has Inbound rule allowing ssh and port 80. Can't find anything about Outbound rules there. Rebooted instance, no change. If anyone knows how to diagnose or fix, please help.   • How do I create an ami for openSUSE in Amazon ec2?

    I need to scale some services from local servers to Amazon ec2. The current production-environment is based on the latest openSUSE. In order to keep things simple, I want to run the instances in ec2 in the same environment. However, I'm unable to find any public SUSE ami's or even howto's on this subject. I've seen a few similar questions in different forums, without any resolutions. So actually, I have two questions. 1) Is this at all doable? 2) If, so, is there any documentation / howto's available somewhere? Jarle

  • EC2 Amazon Linux AMI MySQL CPU @ 62% When Idle?

    I am running MySQL on an Amazon Linux AMI. There is nothing connected to it. There are no connections and no other applications running that use MySQL. It is completely idle, but yet, top is reporting that mysql is using 62% of the CPU? Why is this happening and how do I fix it?   • Why hasn't anyone made a way for TimeMachine to wirelessly backup to Amazon S3?

    Seriously. I'm looking at you, Apple. If TimeMachine is supposed to be 'simple backup that just works' why is it impossible to backup into my S3 filespace? Why hasn't some 3rd party developer (JungleDrive???) made it so that TimeMachine will be OK with backing up to amazon s3 storage? It just seems like the most convenient, robust answer. I'd gladly pay the $20-25 a month for complete, unlosable backups that I can sync with wirelessly on a proper scheme.

  • MyMessageBox for Phone and Store apps

    I am sharing a class I use for both my Windows Phone 8 and Windows Store app projects. Background and my requirements For my Windows Phone 7 projects two years ago I wrote an improved custom MessageBox class that preserves the well-known MessageBox interface while offering several advantages. I documented those and shared it for Windows Phone 7 here: Guide.BeginShowMessageBox wrapper. Aside: With Windows Phone 8 we can now use the async/await feature out of the box without taking a dependency on additional/separate pre-release software. As I try to share code between my existing Windows Phone 8 projects and my new Windows Store app projects, I wanted to preserve the calling code, so I decided to wrap the WinRT MessageDialog class in a custom class to present the same MessageBox interface to my codebase. BUT. The MessageDialog class has to be called with the await keyword preceding it (which as we know is viral) which means all my calling code will also have to use await. Which in turn means that I have to change my MessageBox wrapper to present the same interface to the shared codebase and be callable with await… for both Windows Phone projects and Windows Store app projects. Solution The solution is what the requirements above outlined: a single code file with a MessageBox class that you can drop in your project, regardless of whether it targets Windows Phone 8, or Windows 8 Store apps or both.     I'm working on a Facebook app for book sharing, reviewing, and recommendations. I've scoured the web, searched Google using every search phrase I could think of, but I could not find any tutorials on how to access the Amazon.com API for book information. I signed up for an AWS account, but even the tutorials on their website didn't help me one bit. They're all geared toward using cloud computing for file storage and processing, but that's not what I want. I just want to access their API to search info on books. Kind of like how http://openlibrary.org/ does it, where it's a simple URL call to get information on a book (but their databases aren't nearly as populated as Amazon's). Why is it so damned hard to find the information I need on Amazon's AWS site? If anybody could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • How to use PostgreSQL on AWS - Ubuntu 11.10

    I'm extremely new to cloud-computing, Linux, and PostgreSQL, so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I've managed to create an m1.large instance running Ubuntu 11.10, connect via Putty SSH, and install PostgreSQL (sudo apt-get install postgresql), but that is as far as I've gotten. My goal is to run several python web-scraping scripts that I've written on this instance (so as not to eat up all of our bandwidth (smaller company at the moment)) and insert the scraped data into a PostgreSQL table on the instance and later retrieve that data to store on our local server (as I've heard AWS EBS is unreliable and I don't want to take chances). How can I configure PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? How can I access the data from my machine? I currently use PgAdmin3 to manage PosgreSQL on our local server. Can I use this same interface to manage PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? Any suggestions, solutions, links, etc is greatly appreciated. And again, if this is a dumb question, I apologize.

  • Common way to store model transformations

    I ask myself what's the best way to store the transformations in a model class. What I came up with is to store the translation and scaling in a Vector3 and the rotation in a Matrix4. On each update (frame) I multiply the 3 matrices (first build a Translation and Scaling Matrix) to get the world matrix. In this way I have no accumulated error. world = translation * scaling * rotation Another way would be to store the rotation in a quaternion but then I would have a high cost to convert to a matrix every time step. If I lerp the model I convert the rotation matrix to quaternion and then back to matrix. For speed optimization I have a dirty flag for each transformation so that I only do a matrix multiplication if necessary. world = translation if (isScaled) { world *= scaling } if (isRotated) { world *= rotation } Is this a common way or is it more common to have only one Matrix4 for all transformations? And is it better to store the rotation only as quaternion? For info: Currently I'm building a CSS3D engine in Javascript but these questions are relevant for every 3D engine.

    Does anyone know of a library out there (preferably in C#) that will take classes and generate XML or flat files suitable for feeds to Amazon Marketplace Web Services?   • Force.com presents Database.com SQL Azure/Amazon RDS unfazed

    At the DreamForce 2010 event in San Francisco Force.com unveiled their next big thing in the Fat SaaS portfolio "Database.com".  I am still wondering how would they would've shelled out for that domain name. Now why would a already established SaaS player foray into a key building block like Database? Potentially allowing enterprises to build apps that do not utilize the Force.com stack! One key reason is being seen as the Fat SaaS player with evey trick in the SaaS space under his belt. You want CRM come hither, want a custom development PaaS like solution welcome home (VMForce), want all your apps to talk to a cloud DB and minimize latency by having it reside closer to you cloud apps? You've come to the right place sire! Other is potentially killing foray of smaller DB players like Oracle (Not surprisingly, the Database.com offering is a highly customized and scalable Oracle database) from entering the lucrative SaaS db marketplace. The feature set promised looks great out of the box for someone who likes to visualize cool new architectures. The ground realities are certainly going to be a lot different considering the SOAP/REST style access patterns in lieu of the comfortable old shoe of SQL. Microsoft suffered heavily with SDS (SQL Data Services) offering in early 2009 and had to pull the plug on the product only to reintroduce as a simple SQL Server in the cloud, SQL Windows Azure. Though MSFT is playing cool by providing OData semantics to work with SQL Windows Azure satisfying atleast some needs of the Web-Style to a DB. The other features like Social data models including Profiles, Status updates, feeds seem interesting as well. (Although I beleive social is just one of the aspects of large scale collaborative computing). All these features start "Free" for devs its a good news but the good news stops here. The overall pricing model of $ per Users per Transactions / Month is highly disproportionate compared to Amazon RDS (Based on MySQL) or SQL Windows Azure (Based on MSSQL). Roger Jennigs of Oakleaf did an interesting comparo based on 3, 10, 100, 500 users and it turns out that Database.com going by current understanding is way too expensive for the services on offer. The offering may not impact the decision for DotNet shops mulling their cloud stategy or even some Java/MySQL shops thinking about Amazon RDS, however for enterprises having already invested in other force.com offerings this could be a very important piece in the cloud strategy jigsaw. One which would address a key cloud DB issue of "Latency" for them at least it will help having the DB in the neighborhood. The tooling and "SQL like" access provider drivers (Think ODBC/JDBC) will be available later this year. Progress Software has already announced their JDBC driver stack for Database.com. It remains to be seen how effective the overall solutions proves to be in the longer run but for starts its a important decision towards consolidating Force.com's already strong positioning in the SaaS space.   • Security Pattern to store SSH Keys

    I am writing a simple flask application to submit scientific tasks to remote HPC resources. My application in background talks to remote machines via SSH (because it is widely available on various HPC resources). To be able to maintain this connection in background I need either to use the user's ssh keys on the running machine (when user's have passwordless ssh access to the remote machine) or I have to store user's credentials for the remote machines. I am not sure which path I have to take, should I store remote machine's username/password or should I store user's SSH key pair in database? I want to know what is the correct and safe way to connect to remote servers in background in context of a web application.
