  • Which MS technologies would be suited for a data intensive application?

    I'm a junior VB.net developer with little application design knowledge. I've been reading a lot of material online regarding different design patterns, frameworks, and methodologies. It's become a bit confusing for me. Right now I'm trying to decide on what language would be best suited to convert an existing VB6 application (with SQL server backend.) I need to update the UI and add more user functionality and reporting capabilities. Initially I was thinking of using WPF and attempting the MVVM model for this big project. Reports would be generated from SSRS. A peer suggested using ASP.net and I don't have enough experience to determine what would be better. The senior programmers here are stuck on using VB6 and don't have any input on what to use. They are encouraging me to use the latest technologies. This application would be for ~20 users in a central location. Ideally I would stick to a Microsoft .net language. Current interface is similar to a datagrid table where the user would click in to see the detail of each record. They would need to have multiple records open at any given time. Internal clients within an intranet How complex are the interactions you expect to implement? not very... displaying data from SQL server to UI. Allow user updates to said data. Typically just one user modifying a record. Yes, windows xp environment, potentially upgrading to Win7. Currently in IE.6 moving to IE7 or 8 within a couple of months. Do users need access from anywhere? No, just from their PC.

    I have created a winform for the users to view view the many reports I am creating for them. I have a drop down list with the report name which triggers the appropriate fields to display the parameters. Once those are filled, they press Submit and the report appears. This works the first time they hit the screen. They can change the parameters and the ReportViewer works fine. Change to a different report, and the I get the following ReportViewer error: An error occurred during local report processing. An error has occurred during the report processing. A data source instance has not been supplied for the data source "CgTempData_BusMaintenance". As far as the process I use: I set reportName (string) the physical RDLC name. I set the dataSource (string) as the DataSource Name I fill a generic DataTable with the data for the report to run from. Make the ReportViewer visible Set the LocalReport.ReportPath = "Reports\\" = reportName; Clear the LocalReport.DataSources.Clear() Add the new LocalReport.DataSources.Add(new ReportDataSource(dataSource, dt)); RefreshReport() on the ReportViewer.   • Trouble switching to the beta ajaxcontroltoolkit

    I wanted to switch to the beta version to see if it fixes a problem I have been having, so I downloaded it and put two dll files into my bin folder. I deleted the old references to these files in visual studio, and re-added them. When I run my program I get an error: Microsoft JScript runtime error: AjaxControlToolkit requires ASP.NET Ajax 4.0 scripts. Ensure the correct version of the scripts are referenced. If you are using an ASP.NET ScriptManager, switch to the AjaxScriptManager in System.Web.Ajax.dll, or use the ToolkitScriptManager in AjaxControlToolkit.dll. I can't figure out how to fix this. I have the new System.Web.Ajax.dll added to visual studio, but I can't see any AjaxScriptManager anywhere... Any ideas?

  • iPhone nextResponder switching keyboards

    iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 4 (I am downloading B5 to see if this clears this up) To me this seems like a bug, but maybe I am missing something. The linked test program illustrates this problem. I have several UITextFields that I am linking together using the Tag property. In textFieldShouldReturn I get the next UITextField and set it as the active responder. The problem arises with the IB settings for the keyboard type. In the test program I have the first two text fields set to default. The next three text fields are set to numeric and symbols. As you move into the set (bottom three) that use the numeric/symbol keyboard the keyboard will toggle between numeric/symbol and the default. What I mean is the third field will display the numeric/symbol. The second Default. The third numeric/symbol. If you add more text fields setup as numeric/symbol this will continue on. Now if you tab into the forth field (it should bring up the default) and then manually select the numeric/symbol. The problem will disappear. I have tried various things to track down why the problem disappears. No luck so far. Sample Project

Here's the situation: I can run Report Builder from localhost My coworker can run Report Builder on his Vista computer Another coworker can run Report Builder on his XP SP3 computer (IE7) I can NOT run Report Builder on my XP SP3 computer (IE7) I'm told that it could be anything from an errant registry entry to a group policy problem.   • Switching from ListView to VirtualStringTree

    Hey S.O! I am trying to build my projects with a VirtualStringTree rather than a Listview, because of the vast speed difference. The thing is, even after looking thru the demo's, I just can't figure out exactly how I would use it as a ListView. Like, adding, deleting, and basically just working with ListView items is so easy, but when I look at the VT, it gets almost too complicated. All I am looking for, is a VT that looks like a ListView, with subitems etc. Here are some routines using the ListView, that I would like to use with VT (This is just a pseudo example: procedure Add; begin with ListView.Items.Add do Begin Caption := EditCaption.Text; SubItems.Add(EditSubItem.Text): End; end; Procedure ReadItem(I : Integer); begin ShowMessage(ListView.Items[I].Caption); ShowMessage(ListView.Items[I].SubItems[0]); end; Of course, also the Delete function, but since thats like 1 line, I didnt bother :P Could anyone maybe translate the above examples into using a ListView style VT?     This is probably a pretty easy to answer question, but I can't find the solution myself after a couple hours of searching the documentation and Google. I set the orientation of my Android app to landscape in the AndroidManifest.xml file: android:screenOrientation="landscape" However, when I run the app in the simulator, it appears sideways and in portrait mode. How can I switch the emulator to landscape mode on a mac? It's running the 1.6 SDK. Thanks!

  • Eclipse 3.5 switching tab is very slow

    I am using eclipse 3.5 (cocoa build) on Macos 10.5 with Java 1.5.0.19. I just have 3 java files opened 1 files ~ 2000 lines the other 2 are ~ 700 lines. But when I switch from 1 file tab to another, eclipse takes a long time (~ 20 seconds) to switch to another tab. I often use this pattern: collectionofsomestuff //here it's LinqToEntities .Select(something=>new{something.Name,something.SomeGuid}) .ToArray() //From here on it's LinqToObjects .Select(s=>new SelectListItem() { Text = s.Name, Value = s.SomeGuid.ToString(), Selected = false }) Perhaps I'd split it over a couple of lines, but essentially, at the ToArray point, I'm effectively enumerating my query and storing the resulting sequence so that I can further process it with all the goodness of a full CLR to hand. As I have no interest in any kind of manipulation of the intermediate list, I use ToArray over ToList as there's less overhead. I do this all the time, but I wonder if there is a better pattern for this kind of problem?

    I have a form(C#) with a tab control and its has around five tab pages. each of the tab have a few textboxes. 1) if a User is in say Tab A and edits certain fields i need to validate the text enetered if found invalid then i should not allow any tab switch ? is that possible? 2) Another case could be ... user edits some values and clicks on another tab, on doing so i need to check if the values that were enetered for Tab A is correct or not ? can i do this? I'm trying to make a role-playing game, and I want the game to work so that it transitions to the battle NIB for battles, then returns back to the map NIB afterward, yet still retain all the progress the player has made exploring the dungeon. I've tried proto-typing this with just a view-switcher, where one view creates content, and then switches to the other view, and then coming back from the other view. However, once the view goes back to the original, the original view is reset. How to make the data persistent so that it doesn't reset after every "battle"? Thanks!

    I'm having a strange problem that I don't understand. I have a UIScrollView with several UITextField objects. When I switch to the view, I set the first UITextField as firstresponder, and the keyboardWasShown method gets called due to the UIKeyboardDidShowNotification that the view is registered for. The weird thing is, when I touch the next UITextField, the keyboardWasShown method is not called. I don't understand this, since Apple's documentation says "If your interface has multiple text fields, the user can tap between them to edit the values in each one. When that happens, however, the keyboard does not disappear but the system does still generate UIKeyboardDidShowNotification notifications each time editing begins in a new text field." My code I've copied directly from Apple's documentation as well, and it works properly, but it only gets called the first time.   • Switching VS2010 to use Windows 7.1 SDK

    I've used VS2008 on my development machine for some years now, with windows SDK v7.1. I've installed VS2010, and it's using the Windows SDK v7.0a, but I need it to use the Windows 7.1 SDK (which I had installed prior to installing VS2010). When I run the Windows SDK 7.1 configuration tool, to switch the Windows SDK in use, the tool updates for VS2008, but not for VS2010. The message it reports is: "The Windows SDK Configuration Tool has successfully set Windows SDK version v7.1 as the current version for Visual Studio 2008" The configuration tool is installed with the Windows 7.1 SDK and is found here: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Setup\WindowsSdkVer.exe" VS2010 continues to use WSDK 7.0a, which extremely frustrating, as I need to do DirectShow development (so I need to build the baseclasses, which aren't released with 7.0a release of WSDK). Would I be correct in assuming that it's not updating VS2010 settings because VS2010 wasn't installed at the time that I installed Windows 7.1 SDK? Can I fix this manually, or should I uninstall Windows 7.1 SDK, then reinstall it? Any other suggestions / workarounds for this?

    I have a calendar on my website, generated in Perl using Template::Toolkit and Template::Plugin::Date. It highlights the current day. I achieve this by iterating through all the dates (as I print the calendar) and comparing against the current date. Something like this: [% IF cur_date == date.format(format = '%Y-%m-%d') %] ... [% END %] It all works well until someone in Australia looks at it. (They are in a different timezone to me and my server in the UK). What's the best way to get Template::Plugin::Date to use a different time zone? It accepts a 'locale' parameter, but AFAIK this is only used for formatting.

  • uiscrollview not switching image subviews

    I'm building a comic viewer app, that consists of two view controllers, the root viewcontroller basically displays a view where a user decides what comic they want to read by pressing a button. The second viewController actually displays the comic as a uiscrollview with a toolbar and a title at the top. So the problem I am having is that the comic image panels themselves are not changing from whatever the first comic you go to if you select another comic after viewing the first one. The way I set it up, and I admit it's not exactly mvc, so please don't hate, anyway the way I set it up is each comic uiscrollview consists of x number of jpg images where each comic set's image names have a common prefix and then a number like 'funny1.jpg', 'funny2.jpg', 'funny3.jpg' and 'soda1.jpg', 'soda2.jpg', 'soda3.jpg', etc... so when a user selects a comic to view in the root controller it makes a call to the delegate and sets ivars on instances of the comicviewcontroller that belongs to the delegate (mainDelegate.comicViewController.property) I set the number of panels in that comic, the comic name for the title label, and the image prefix. The number of images changes(or at least the number that you can scroll through), and the title changes but for some reason the images are the same ones as whatever comic you clicked on initially. I'm basing this whole app off of the 'scrolling' code sample from apple. I thought if I added a viewWillAppear:(BOOL) animated call to the comicViewController everytime the user clicked the button that would fix it but it didn't, after all that is where the scrollview is laid out.   • Jquery Fast image switching

    Hi, I have a php class that generates a map image depending on my db data. It is periodically updated thru a serInterval loop. I am trying to update it with no flickering but I just can't. I've tried different methods (preloader, imageswitcher) with no success. //first load function map() { $("#map").html("<img src=map.php?randval="+Math.random()+">"); } //update it from setInterval calls function updatemap() { $("#map").fadeOut(function() { $(this).load(function() { $(this).fadeIn(); }); $(this).attr("src", "map.php?randval="+Math.random()); }) } Is there any way to update the image with no flickering at all? I would prefer an inmediate swap insteado of a fade. The problem I'm having is that after calling updatemap() the image just dissapears. ¿Maybe it is a problem with the attribute src I am parsing?   • Switching from Sourcesafe - What to look for in a product

    We're looking to move off of sourcesafe and on to a more robust source control system for our .Net apps. We're also looking for scripted/automated deployments. I'm a .Net developer (web and winforms). However, most of our development staff is RPG for the IBM iSeries and the devs use Aldon's LMI for source control and deployment. Our manager would prefer to stick with Aldon so all of our products are in the same system. However, I don't have experience with Aldon's products on the .Net side. I've used TFS and Subversion with Tortoise a bit, but not enough to recommend one or the other, especially in comparison to Aldon's product. Does anybody have experience with Aldon's products? If so, thoughts please? Also, other than the obvious things source control systems do, are there things I should avoid or are there must haves? I'm open to any system. A bit of background, I'm the only .Net dev in our company but I let operations do the deployments. I do want the ability to support concurrent checkouts if we hire a new dev.

I create some code as follows: try ... ... ... except ... unfortunately before moving to the except code the debugger kicks in with a un-user friendly message. How can switch it off and move directly to the except code?
