• Just how slow should my VPN be?

  I have a VPN setup between a remote office with 2 ADSL connections (8Mb downstream, 512Kb upstream) and a main office with a 10Mb EFM connection (10Mb both up and down). The VPN is an IPSec connection using a DrayTek 2930 router for the ADSL and a DrayTek 3200 router at the EFM end. However, I'm unable to get speeds over this connection (tested with iperf) of anything over 600Kb or so down from the main office (traffic will pretty much always be from the main office to the remote office) Whilst I realise that there is an overhead and I'm never going to get the "full" bandwidth available over this VPN, I'd like to think that there's something I should be looking at that may help improve it. I've tried using the DrayTek's built-in "VPN Trunking" features which are supposed to load-balance connections, but this doesn't seem to improve matters much. I guess my question is - is this the kind of performance I should expect from this kind of setup and I'll just have to live with it, or should I be able to squeeze something more out of it through some VPN magic?

• afp/smb transfers caps at 2 megabytes/sec, wireless N

  I wanted to transfer files between two mac computers. The network is wireless-N and both computers have wireless-N modules in them. The problem is that when I transfer files between them, via file sharing (afp) the network speed caps at 2 megabytes/sec. Just downloading files from the internet I can get faster speeds, so this isn't a constriction of my wifi bandwidth, it appears to be a constriction of the protocol being used. My wifi-n is set to 130mbits, so I should see real world transfer speeds around 12-16 megabytes/sec I did this command on both computers sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0 which is supposed to lower tcp overhead, but this did not affect it. How can I get the speed I am expecting?

• Deleting sender from Outlook Safe Senders using GPO?

  We're having an external company do a mailshot to our users. The message contains images that are linked rather than embedded in the image (bandwidth isn't an issue). So of course on recent versions of Outlook you're prompted to download the images, not the end of the world, but it would be nice if that didn't happen. There's a bug in the Office/Outlook ADM/ADMX templates that means that a custom list of Safe Senders won't import unless you follow this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2252421 Thing is, if I remove an entry from the Safe Senders file, it doesn't seem to remove it from Outlook, which seems odd?

• How can I find out what's uploading traffic to the internet?

  Some program I'm running is constantly uploading to the Internet. It's uploaded 300MB in the last few hours. I could reboot and see if it stops, but I'd prefer to find out what it is if possible. I've tried using the resource monitor but it's totally nonsensical - even if I run a broadband speedtest, it barely registers any traffic. Ideally I'd like to find a tool which can tell me the current bandwidth of each application. I think NetLimiter used to work on XP but it's not supported for Windows 7.

• Internet connection too slow

  I now think that it is the ISP. After a full scan of my system. With super antispyware, avast, norton and spybot. Internet connection is still slow. And the truth is we have recently upgraded the connection from 512 kbps to 768. And I get a .25 Mbps at speedtest.net which is equivalent to 256 Kbps. Its not even half of the advertised speed. Is it normal for ISP's to just limit your bandwidth if you are always downloading something from the internet? Are they entitled to do this.

• Multiple connections to the same Wireless Network in Windows 7

  Hello, my university just limited bandwidth to 512 kbps (that's 64 kB/s!) for each connection. I was thinking to make multiple connection to the same wireless network (called "internet"), is this possible under Windows 7? I know it's possible to connect to more than one WLAN through the "hostednetwork" concept in netsh: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=xxxxx netsh wlan start hostednetwork However this method doesn't seem to work, I don't know if it's due to the authentication method (through certificates while hostednetwork seems to support just a "passphrase") or because I'm already connected to that network with the same MAC. Can you think to some tool able to do this?

  I know that I can shape output traffic with tc or a similar tool. However, I want to shape the input traffic now—actually, I want to prioritize downloading of files of certain type through a slow lossy connection. I know the reason tc can only shape output traffic: the host itself has no direct control over the amount of input traffic. On the other hand, TCP has some measures built in it which prevent the TCP traffic from overflowing a slow connection. So, can I mangle something in TCP header so that the remote host will think my connection is slower than it thinks? Suppose that I am able to set the corresponding mark on both types of connections with iptables. Is there any way to reduce the input bandwidth of connections of first type, but only if connections of second type are present?

  I recently started receiving pubsub data feed from etsy. It averages around 250 notifications per minute. But obviously, when the USA wakes up that spikes quite heavily. I want to be able to deal with those spikes (about 3 per day) but the rest of day is fine. What's the best method of getting the right server configuration. • Where does traffic shaping typically take place?

  As part of upgrading our network infrastructure we are looking to traffic shape our bandwidth since we only have about 3Mb down / 1 Mb up. We're looking to prioritize it so that web browsing gets priority and in the future some VOIP might be added in as well. Internal LAN traffic doesn't need to be controlled just our outbound connection. I've been looking at Cisco hardware and it seems that several of their products do shaping at the core switch, firewall, and router level. I'm wondering where does shaping normally take place? Is it normally done at the router, core switch, or firewall?

• limit the speed of writing files to NFS

  CentOS 5.6 NFS is mounted on the server for backup disk space. When the backup job started, it could reach 80MB/s and we really do not expect it took so much bandwidth. So i need to find a way to limit the speed of writing to NFS. I tried rsync with --bwlimit=5000. However, it did limit the reading speed, but the accumulated data still was written at 80MB/s, and no writing activities for seconds. Is there any way to limit the writing speed of NFS?

  Before I pose my question, I will give some insight as per my scenario: I work for a small business (cost is an important factor) Our bandwidth is limited and would not support an in-house FTP server We need to share files (mostly pdf, inDesign, Illustrator documents) to our clients, and as we expand, we are finding that our current locally-hosted FTP solution is too slow and is becoming a detriment to our sales team. What we need is a remotely hosted solution to share files with our clients, specifically with the following features: Greater than 100gb of secure storage The Ability to distribute unique log in credentials to clients, granting access to a personalized directory or folder, while limiting access to other files on the server. A relatively simple web-based UI for clients with limited computer knowledge We have considered a dedicated remote server, and web-based services (box.net, yousendit.com, onehub.com, filesanywhere.com) but I am unsure as per the direction we should be taking - have I left another solution out?   Recently one of my servers has been subjected to malicious ddos attacks. I have about 12 websites hosted on the server which uses name based v-hosting. I am trying to identify which virtual host(s) are getting bombarded with traffic. I have used tools such as iftop which is good for identifying hosts which are consuming lots of bandwidth, and also apachetop which is useful for identifying which resources are being requested on a single v-host. What I really need is a tool which allows me to see the amount of traffic being received by each v-host in real time so I can easily see which v-host is being targeted. Does such a tool exist?

• How to Check the Performance of VPS?

  I have subscribed to a VPS offered by a hosting provider. The guaranteed performance 1GB RAM, 1M bandwidth. But I found that from time to time the websites can be very slow, so slow that it could take more than 30 seconds to load a simple Joomla website. However the website resumed the usual speed after a few minutes. This created a problem for me when I want to report the performance problem to the hosting provider. They would say to me "see, no problem". Of course there is no problem because the problem is only there for a few minutes , and everything is normal. This ocassionally-slow problem will bug me a few days later and the cycle repeats. Any idea how to solve this problem?

  Hey everyone, I have a free dropbox account (2GB), and I was wondering how the versioning of large files works. I have a full backup of all my webfiles that sites @ just over 1GB. After the initial upload of 1GB, everytime it syncs will dropbox figure out the delta of the file, or will it have to upload the entire thing again to version it? It would be cool to always have an up to date version of a large file, but I dont want to kill my bandwidth uploading 1GB everytime. Is this possible? Thanks,

  Imagine you only have DSL with 5mbps Down and 2mbps Up. Is it possible to have 10 of these for example and combine them in a way that would increase the upstrean bandwidth to one server? In my head it works like this: intranet with one gateway/router router connected to multi wan load ballancer on each ballancer wan port router with vpn clinet set up, tunneling to a server ?some? software on the server in cloud joining all these connection into one interface again I would need this mostly for big uploads to a server, downlink to the office is not that important at all. • How can you get MySQL statistics for a specific user?

  I've searched Google for a while on this and I'm not sure if it is easily or directly possible. I'm hosting a database on my cPanel server for a client which is accessed from their main website. As a result, I can't find a way to determine what amount of resources they are using. As there aren't any files under their account, cPanel reports the bandwidth at zero. I do know the stat programs don't monitor MySQL and that MySQL has a global statistics page that reports all usage on the server.

• Migrate 3 terabytes of files to a new server windows 2003

  We have a new file server to handle the obscene amount of files generated by the company (PDFs, XLS, DOCs and JPGs). Files being moved to the new server total about 3tb. The problem is we can't take the company down for days to move the files. The other problem is the applications creating all these files have to reference previous files, so we can't simply point them to the new server. Also, there isn't an option to have the applications create files on the new server, but reference the old server for existing files. The servers are x64 win2003 r2. Both servers are on the same subnet. DFS doesn't work. Is there an application that can handle this amount of data to copy the files over, throttle bandwidth, and do a 'merge'? By merge I mean constantly copying over newly created files until the two servers are synched.

  I'm looking for an adapter that will let me use a USB 3 port as a Gigabit Ethernet port. This is proving surprisingly hard to find! Is there some reason why this product is either unavailable or very obscure? Is there an online shop (US/Canada) where I can buy such an item? Newegg, TigerDirect, NCIX, etc. do not seem to carry such an item. I find this surprising since it will provide at least double the bandwidth (possibly quadruple) compared to a USB 2 Ethernet adapter.

So I was searching for a router with 1 Gbit ports, jumbo frame support and good reviews, but haven't really found a promising candidate so far. Any suggestions?

• Teaming/Spanning Switch Ports

  I like to team NICs on my servers. Since most workstations are giga-bit anymore I want to provide my servers a bit more bandwidth. I've read various things that say I am/am not supposed to bond the ports on the switch. I see benefit in doing it as I'm not sure how the switch ARP table handles the same MAC address on multiple ports. Suggestions on the "ideal" way to do it? If it matters, I have mix (various locations) of Dell and HP, web managed, Layer 2 switches. Servers are mostly Dell with Broadcom NICs.
