• Upgrading HP DL185 G5 8LFF, is using a Dell J1520 4-Drop SATA Adapter possible?

  The HP DL185 G5 8LFF model supports 8 3.5" drives and 1 optical drive. However, instead of the optical drive, I'd like to have 2x 2.5" drives instead. The problem is that the PSU has no more SATA power cables (even though the motherboard has 4 additional SATA data ports). The PSU does have a free 10-pin connector and it looks like the J1520 cable from Dell would fit the bill. Link to cable description Does anyone have any experience using these cables? Are they safe? Any other ideas for adding the disks to the server if I don't use the cable? Thanks!

• Copying partial cell to another cell in OpenOffice Calc

  Cell A1 says 0001 John Smith Cell A2 says 0002 Bill Snyder I want to basically split this, so one column just shows the numbers (0001, 0002, etc.) and then another column just shows the name. The first part is easy. Using the function "=LEFT(A1;4)" I can get 0001. How can I grab the name? Using "RIGHT(A1;99)", for example, will grab the entire string "0001 John Smith". Since each name is different in length, I'm not sure what to do. Can I somehow tell it to grab the whole string EXCEPT the first 4 characters? Or somehow tell it to grab the last 2 WORDS instead of a number of characters like it's asking?

• Is my client correct that I cannot take a vacation as a subcontractor? [closed]

  I have 2 clients who I do ongoing work for as a subcontractor. Both are sporadic and part-time. Company A sent me to a 3 day certification course out of state. The following week I was scheduled for a 3 day vacation. I warned company B three weeks prior to these events. During my training that Company A was paying for, Company B asked me to leave the training to workon something for them that needed immediate attention. I declined. However I made arrangements to work on it in the evening and in the early mornings after they threatened to take the work and all subsequent work for this client to someone else. I lost all networking and fun from that trip... The following week I was in Florida and was again asked to do more work on the project after the feedback from the client. The integrated product personnel would not cooperate/return any of our calls so I did the best I could. I turned in the work, explained the issue and then was gone for 3 hours. When I returned, all my access to the project had been revoked and after a week of my calls and emails I found out they replaced me. I sent an invoice 3 weeks ago and they tell me they owe me nothing because I did not do the whole project and they cannot bill the client for what I did, because they are billing for the second contractor who started over. I was told that they realize I was on vacation but as a subcontractor I lose the ability to just disappear. I was gone 3 hours! Is this normal, correct, legal?? Not only did they ruin my class and my vacation, but now they expect me to not demand payment? They ended our relationship and I was in the middle of another project of theirs too. They told me to immediately cease all work for them. How do I get paid for the work I have yet to invoice this month?

• Outlook Replies with Inline Comments

  I have a user who uses Word as his e-mail editor. Often when replying to an e-mail, he'll insert his comments into the body of the original e-mail. Since he is using Word as the editor, these show as [User Name] Comment Text in a contrasting color. However, some users see the comments in their Outlook, and others do not. I've tried Selecting/DeSelecting Word as the e-mail editor on the recipients, and it does not seem to make a difference. We are using Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 clients along with a few Entourage Clients. There does not seem to be a pattern related to which client is used, but Entourage seems to be more likely to have the problem. TIA, Bill

• After installing Office365 can you go back to Office 2008 (without the CD)

  I got this laptop from my dad and don't have the Microsoft Office 2008 CD which is what he had installed when he gave it to me to use. Now I've got a client that wants me to do some freelance work and sent me to Microsoft Exchange and the first thing it wants me to do in the Exchange is install Office365. The client mentioned very briefly that he would get me the software if necessary but he wasn't specific about what software. Now that I see it my concern is after the job is done I'll be left with a monthly bill to have Office. Will it be possible to go back to Office 2008 without having the CD?

• Is it possible to route *.example.com to a single machine without registering extra domains?

  I would like to achieve something similar to what wordpress.com does - giving each user its own subdomain. user1.wordpress.com would in the VirtualHosts setup of Apache would have its DocRoot at /user/user1, for instance. Now, our hosting service provider takes a fee for creating a domain, and in our case this would mean a ridiculous number of domains with a matching price. After some googling on DNS I came over a description of a DNAME record. That seems to fit the bill precisely. Any reason why my service provider would not do this, or why I should not do this?

  Hey, In the spirit of building community, and because it's always cool to see great work being pushed out and created by people, anyone up for a little show and tell? The rules are really simple, and this is supposed to be a bit of fun, so; post a link to a single piece of work (anything you've produced, designed or developed (or helped developed)) and write a little paragraph or two on what it is, what you like about it, the technology you used and perhaps one thing that you learnt from the project. It could be a website, framework, open source project, game, mobile application... etc. So, allow me to start. I'm personally very proud of a tiny iPhone application I designed and developed. It's only available to UK AppStore users, and I only have a small userbase, but, I like it. The application is called Sushi Total: http://knowledgeisporridge.com/sushitotal.html It's written in Objective-C. It's a very simply application that allows you to total up your bill at Yo Sushi restaurants by tapping coloured plates. If I learnt anything from making this application it's this: I believe software should be simple and uncluttered, and that producing an application with one feature is absolutely fine as long as it works really well. So, who's next?

• Firefox Wordwrap

  The text displayed in several, forum sites that I frequently visit does not automatically word wrap in Firefox's window. Rather, it just "runs off" the right end of the window. I can cause the text to properly word-wrap by maximizing the window and then immediately returning it to its normal size. This lasts until I move to another page and then I have to repeat this "work-around" to display word-wrapped text properly again. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to make Firefox always automatically word-wrap text? TIA. Bill

• Compensation advice on overseas contract with former employer [closed]

  I work as a full time developer in the US. My previous employer from 3 years ago has sold a large startup project in Russia for next month, however their three and only senior developers have recently resigned. I still have somewhat intricate knowledge of the software to be installed since I was the original author, so my former employer, in somewhat of a panic, has asked if I can take two weeks vacation from my current job to fly to Russia and lead the startup. Logistically, I can do this and my current employer agreed without issue. Said former employer is very small and hasn't hired contractors before, and I haven't contracted either. The company simply asked my what my salary requirements are. I had, and still have, a great professional relationship with the owners. I feel like I'm doing this as a favor in a way. Payment is guaranteed, but I have no idea what I should bill for overseas work. If it matters, I was paid around 110k at the former employer. Just looking for some advice. There are many contracting salary threads here, but I feel that the overseas work throws a twist in things. Thank you!

  Question first: What are some feasible alternatives to time tracking for employees in a web/software development company, and why are they better options Explanation: I work at a company where we work like this. Everybody is paid salary. We have 3 types of work, Contract, Adhoc and Internal (Non billable). Adhoc is just small changes that take a few hours and we just bill the client at the end of the month. Contracts are signed and we have this big long process, the usual. We figure out how much to charge by getting an estimation of the time involved (From the design and the developers), multiplying it by our hourly rate and that's it. So say we estimate 50 hours for a website. We have time tracking software and have to record the time in 15 we spend on it (7:00 to 7:15 for example), the project name, and give it some comments. Now if we go over the 50 hours, we are both losing money and are inefficient. Now that I've explained how the system works, my question is how else can it be done if a better method exists (Which I'm sure one must). Nobody here likes the current system, we just can't find an alternative. I'd be more than willing to work after hours longer hours on a project to get it done in time, but I'm much inclined to do so with the current system. I'd love to be able to sum up (Or link) to this post for my manager to show them why we should use abc system instead of this system.

• Backup software for Ubuntu - which one?

  Hi everybody, I have spent some time testing out different backup solutions for my small home office during the last weeks, but still haven't found anything that have been working out too well yet. We can definitely work with a non-GUI script if that's what it takes, if only the requirements are fulfilled: Upload to Amazon S3 Europe. We get unbelievable slow uploading speed to US, so uploading 400+ GB of data will not be happening anytime this year... Incremental backups - only changed files shall be uploaded or we will have a big bill from Amazon in the end of each month.. Files should not be uploaded in one big per-folder archive. This is not efficient at all, since if we change one file in a subfolder, a huge two-digit GB sized file would have to be uploaded during next backup. Not good for economy again, or traffic overhead on our internet connection. What options are available to us? Thanks!

I'd like to set up a few cheap PCs with access to a couple accounts using something like VNC, but it isn't economical to buy a new server for each user or a new license for virtualized OS X Server for each user. I'm fully aware that OS X Server lets you set up users with "network home folders," and I know there's also VNC built into Mac OS X. I've already gotten 2-step instructions on how to get rid of the extraneous account: a) use an MS tool called delprof.msi b) manually delete the former users files in Documents & Settings. But I guess my original question was too complex -- kind of like a bill in Congress. So now I am just asking the final part of the question: How do I create a GUEST ACCOUNT -- then define what it will authorize/grant access to? i.e. internet browser(s), specific programs and files etc

  Hi! I have people, companies, employees, events and event kinds. I'm making a report/followup sheet where people, companies and employees are the rows, and the columns are event kinds. Event kinds are simple values describing: "Promised Donation", "Received Donation", "Phoned", "Followed up" and such. Event kinds are ordered: CREATE TABLE event_kinds ( id, name, position); Events hold the actual reference to the event: CREATE TABLE events ( id, person_id, company_id, referrer_id, event_kind_id, created_at); referrer_id is another reference to people. It is the person which sent the information/tip along, and is an optional field, although I sometimes want to filter on an event_kind that has a specific referrer, while I don't for other event kinds. Notice I don't have an employee ID reference. The reference exists, but is implied. I have application code to validate that person_id and company_id really reference an employee record. The other tables are pretty basic: CREATE TABLE people ( id, name); CREATE TABLE companies ( id, name); CREATE TABLE employees ( id, person_id, company_id); I'm trying to achieve the following report: Referrer Phoned Promised Donated Francois Feb 16th Feb 20th Mar 1st Apple (Steve Jobs) Steve Ballmer Mar 3rd IBM Bill Gates Mar 7th The first row is a people record, the 2nd is an employee, and the 3rd is a company. If I asked for referrer Bill Gates for Phoned event kinds, I'd only see the 3rd row, while asking for Steve and Phoned would return no rows. Right now, I do 3 queries, one for companies, one for people and a last one for employees. I want the event kind columns to be ordered, but I do that in application code and show it properly there. There should be an "easier" way to do it. One other filter criteria would be to filter on people/company names: WHERE LOWER(companies.name) LIKE '%apple%'. Note that I'm ordering by the dates of event_kind_9 here, and a secondary sort is by person/company name. To summarize: I want to paginate the result set, find the latest event for each cell, order the result set by the date of the latest event, and by company/person name, filter by referrer in some event kinds, but not others. For reference, I'm using PostgreSQL, from Ruby, ActiveRecord/Rails. The solution is pure SQL though.

  I'm trying to write an XPath that will select certain nodes that contain a specific word. In this case the word is, "Lockwood". The correct answer is 3. Both of these paths give me 3. count(//*[contains(./*,'Lockwood')]) count(BusinessLetter/*[contains(../*,'Lockwood')]) But when I try to output the text of each specific node //*[contains(./*,'Lockwood')][1] //*[contains(./*,'Lockwood')][2] //*[contains(./*,'Lockwood')][3] Node 1 ends up containing all the text and nodes 2 and 3 are blank. Can some one please tell me what's happening or what I'm doing wrong. • How to get the millisecond value from a Timestamp field in firebird with Delphi 2007

  I have a Firebird database (running on server version 2.1.3) and am connecting to it with Delphi 2007 using the DBExpress objects (using the Interbase driver) One of my tables in the database looks something like this CREATE TABLE MYTABLE ( MYDATE Timestamp NOT NULL, MYINDEX Integer NOT NULL, ... Snip ... PRIMARY KEY (MYDATE ,MYINDEX) ); I can add to the table OK, and in Flame Robin it shows the timestamp field as having a millisecond value. But when I do a select all (select * from MYTABLE) on the table I can not get the millisecond value, as it is always returned as 000. This causes major problems as it is part of the primary key (unfortunately I didn't design the table and don't have authority to change it). I have tried the following to get the millisecond value: sql1.fieldbyname('MYDATE').AsDateTime; sql1.fieldbyname('MYDATE').AsSQLTimeStamp; sql1.fieldbyname('MYDATE').AsStirng; sql1.fieldbyname('MYDATE').AsFloat; But they all return 14/09/2009 14:25:06.000 when formatted. How do I retrieve the millisecond from a timestamp? UPDATE: In case this helps anyone in the future, here are the drivers I tried for DBExpress and the results. Embarcadero - dbExpress Driver for Firebird (Delphi 2010 Trial Version) - Milliseconds not supported in timestamps.   Are there any idioms for returning multiple values from a bash function within a script? http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/assortedtips.html describes how to echo multiple values and process the results (e.g., example 35-17), but that gets tricky if some of the returned values are strings with spaces in. A more structured way to return would be to assign to global variables, like foo () { FOO_RV1="bob" FOO_RV2="bill" } foo echo "foo returned ${FOO_RV1} and ${FOO_RV2}" I realize that if I need re-entrancy in a shell script I'm probably doing it wrong, but I still feel very uncomfortable throwing global variables around just to hold return values. Is there a better way? I would prefer portability, but it's probably not a real limitation if I have to specify #!/bin/bash.

The installer must be able to: be compiled via an ant script be compiled Linux (and Windows) run on Windows and Linux detect / handle previously installed versions of the application We currently use IzPack, because it does all of the above, except the latter: It cannot easily detect previously installed version of the software.   I'm pretty familiar with SSIS parsing of regular delimited text data files, however, I'm looking for some advice on an approach to tackle a file that looks like this test file: ISA*00* *00* *01*220220220 *ZZ*RL CODE 01*060327*1212*U*00300*000008859*0*P*:~ GS*RA*CPA-BPT*LOCALUTILITY*060319*1212*970819003*X*003030~ ST*820*000000001~ BPR*C*321.91*C*X12*CBC*04*000300488**9918939***04*000300002**1598564*070319~ TRN*1*00075319970819105029~ REF*RR*0003199708190000174858~ DTM*097*070318~ DTM*107*070318~ N1*PR*DIRECT PAYMENT~ N1*PE*ABC CORPORATE BILLER*ZZ*90005836~ ENT*1~ N1*PR*BILLING - TEST - NATTRASS~ RMR*CR*0009381082105011**142.15~ REF*TN*000303965~ DTM*109*070316~ ENT*2~ N1*PR*BILL FREID TEST~ RMR*CR*0011010451800011**179.76~ REF*TN*000304189~ The 321.91 is the total of the transaction. I would prefer to do this with SSIS, but could also do create a C# parser. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

• Can I use a MIME type declaration to get an HTML file to open in MS Word?

I don't really have a clue with regard to HTTP headers and MIME types generally, so - any tips? Many thanks!

• Excel tab sheet names vs. Visual Basic sheet names

  It seems that Visual Basic can not reference sheets according to user-modified sheet names. The worksheet tabs can have their names changed, but it seems that Visual Basic still thinks of the worksheet names as Sheet1, etc., despite the workbook tab having been changed to something useful. I have this: TABname = rng.Worksheet.Name ' Excel sheet TAB name, not VSB Sheetx name. Thanks, Bill Gates. but I would like to use sheet names in Visual Basic routines. The best I could come up so far is to Select Case the Worksheet Tab vs. Visual Basic names, which doesn't make my day. Visual Basic must know the Sheet1, Sheet2, etc., names. How can I get these associated with the Excel tab names so that I don't have to maintain a look-up table which changes with each new sheet or sheet tab re-naming? Thanks in advance for your replies.
