  • Call a javascript function at distinct time intervals

    - by Dkong
    I've created a stock ticker function and need to call it every 2 minutes. I've succeeded in doing this with the javascript setInterval function, but the problem is on the first call it waits 2 minutes before calling the function, whereas I want the first load to be called right away. function CallFunction() { setInterval("GetFeed()", 2000); }

  • B-trees, databases, sequential inputs, and speed.

    - by IanC
    I know from experience that b-trees have awful performance when data is added to them sequentially (regardless of the direction). However, when data is added randomly, best performance is obtained. This is easy to demonstrate with the likes of an RB-Tree. Sequential writes cause a maximum number of tree balances to be performed. I know very few databases use binary trees, but rather used n-order balanced trees. I logically assume they suffer a similar fate to binary trees when it comes to sequential inputs. This sparked my curiosity. If this is so, then one could deduce that writing sequential IDs (such as in IDENTITY(1,1)) would cause multiple re-balances of the tree to occur. I have seen many posts argue against GUIDs as "these will cause random writes". I never use GUIDs, but it struck me that this "bad" point was in fact a good point. So I decided to test it. Here is my code: SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[T1]( [ID] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [T1_1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([ID] ASC) ) GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[T2]( [ID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [T2_1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([ID] ASC) ) GO declare @i int, @t1 datetime, @t2 datetime, @t3 datetime, @c char(300) set @t1 = GETDATE() set @i = 1 while @i < 2000 begin insert into T2 values (NEWID(), @c) set @i = @i + 1 end set @t2 = GETDATE() WAITFOR delay '0:0:10' set @t3 = GETDATE() set @i = 1 while @i < 2000 begin insert into T1 values (@i, @c) set @i = @i + 1 end select DATEDIFF(ms, @t1, @t2) AS [Int], DATEDIFF(ms, @t3, getdate()) AS [GUID] drop table T1 drop table T2 Note that I am not subtracting any time for the creation of the GUID nor for the considerably extra size of the row. The results on my machine were as follows: Int: 17,340 ms GUID: 6,746 ms This means that in this test, random inserts of 16 bytes was almost 3 times faster than sequential inserts of 4 bytes. Would anyone like to comment on this? Ps. I get that this isn't a question. It's an invite to discussion, and that is relevant to learning optimum programming.

  • Are there compelling reasons not to use Groovy?

    - by Leonard H Martin
    I'm developing a LoB application in Java after a long absence from the platform (having spent the last 8 years or so entrenched in Fortran, C, a smidgin of C++ and latterly .Net). Java, the language, is not much changed from how I remember it. I like it's strengths and I can work around its weaknesses - the platform has grown and deciding upon the myriad of different frameworks which appear to do much the same thing as one another is a different story; but that can wait for another day - all-in-all I'm comfortable with Java. However, over the last couple of weeks I've become enamoured with Groovy, and purely from a selfish point of view: but not just because it makes development against the JVM a more succinct and entertaining (and, well, "groovy") proposition than Java (the language). What strikes me most about Groovy is its inherent maintainability. We all (I hope!) strive to write well documented, easy to understand code. However, sometimes the languages we use themselves defeat us. An example: in 2001 I wrote a library in C to translate EDIFACT EDI messages into ANSI X12 messages. This is not a particularly complicated process, if slightly involved, and I thought at the time I had documented the code properly - and I probably had - but some six years later when I revisited the project (and after becoming acclimatised to C#) I found myself lost in so much C boilerplate (mallocs, pointers, etc. etc.) that it took three days of thoughtful analysis before I finally understood what I'd been doing six years previously. This evening I've written about 2000 lines of Java (it is the day of rest, after all!). I've documented as best as I know how, but, but, of those 2000 lines of Java a significant proportion is Java boiler plate. This is where I see Groovy and other dynamic languages winning through - maintainability and later comprehension. Groovy lets you concentrate on your intent without getting bogged down on the platform specific implementation; it's almost, but not quite, self documenting. I see this as being a huge boon to me when I revisit my current project (which I'll port to Groovy asap) in several years time and to my successors who will inherit it and carry on the good work. So, are there any reasons not to use Groovy?

  • small & readable scheme interpreter in C++ ?

    - by anon
    Anyone know of a good / small scheme interpreter in C++? Perferably something < 2000 LOC, with a simple garbage collectro (either compacting or mark & sweep), no need to support all of R5RS, just basics of if/lambda/set!/cons/car/cdr and some basic operations. Thanks!

  • Replace Infinite loop in Flex

    - by H P
    Hello, I want to access a webservice:getMonitorData() , on creationcomplete and returns an array, in an infinite loop so that the getIndex0.text is updated each time. Flex is not able to handle an infinite loop and gives a timeout error 1502. If I run the for loop until i<2000 or so it works fine. How can replace the loop so that my webservice is accessed continiously and the result is shown in getIndex0.text. This is how my application looks like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <s:Group xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" width="400" height="300" xmlns:plcservicebean="server.services.plcservicebean.*" creationComplete="clientMonitor1()"> <fx:Script> <![CDATA[ import mx.collections.ArrayCollection; import mx.controls.Alert; import mx.rpc.CallResponder; import mx.rpc.events.FaultEvent; import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent; [Bindable] public var dbl0:Number; //-----------Infinite Loop, Works fine if condition = i<2000------------------------ public function clientMonitor1():void{ for(var i:int = 0; ; i++){ clientMonitor(); } } public function clientMonitor():void{ var callResp:CallResponder = new CallResponder(); callResp.addEventListener(ResultEvent.RESULT, monitorResult); callResp.addEventListener(FaultEvent.FAULT, monitorFault); callResp.token = plcServiceBean.getMonitorData(); } public function monitorResult(event:ResultEvent):void{ var arr:ArrayCollection = event.result as ArrayCollection; dbl0 = arr[0].value as Number; } protected function monitorFault(event:FaultEvent):void{ Alert.show(event.fault.faultString, "Error while monitoring Data "); } ]]> </fx:Script> <fx:Declarations> <plcservicebean:PlcServiceBean id = "plcServiceBean" showBusyCursor="true" fault="Alert.show(event.fault.faultString + '\n' + event.fault.faultDetail)" /> </fx:Declarations> <mx:Form x="52" y="97" label="Double"> <mx:FormItem label = "getMonitorValue"> <s:TextInput id = "getIndex0" text = "{dbl0}"/> </mx:FormItem> </mx:Form> </s:Group>

  • How to declare ASP classic constants to a data type?

    - by Guy
    In asp classic and vbscript, you can declare a Const with a hexidecial value, and a date type value: Const C_LIGHTCYAN = &hCCFFEE Const C_STARTDATE = #1 JAN 2000# But how can I declare currency, single or doubles data types? Const C_LONG = 1024 '# I want this to be a LONG, not an INT! I'm sure I've seen something like Const C_LNG = L12345 or some other prefix/suffix combination for longs or doubles but can't find the source now

  • Best database (mysql) structure for this case:

    - by robert
    we have three types of data (tables): Book (id,name,author...) ( about 3 million of rows) Category (id,name) ( about 2000 rows) Location (id,name) ( about 10000 rows) A Book must have at least 1 type of Category (up to 3) AND a Book must have only one Location. I need to correlate this data to get this query faster: Select Books where Category = 'cat_id' AND Location = 'loc_id' Select Books where match(name) against ('name of book') AND Location = 'loc_id' Please I need some help. Thanks

  • Find the closest locations to a given address

    - by xtine
    I have built an application in CakePHP that lists businesses. There are about 2000 entries, and the latitude and longitude coordinates for each business is in the DB. I now am trying to tackle the search function. There will be an input box where the user can put a street address, city, or zipcode, and then I would like it to return the 11 closest businesses as found from the database. How would I go about doing this?

  • Characters spilled over multiple columns in Oracle 11g?

    - by vicky21
    This is related to question: How to store unlimited characters in Oracle 11g? If maximum I need is 8000 characters, can I just add 3 more varchar2 columns so that I will have 4 columns with 2000 char each to get 8000 chars. So when the first column is full, values would be spilled over to the next column and so on. Will this design have any bad side effects? Please suggest.

  • How to update a TextView on ButtonClick with Spinner(s) values

    - by source.rar
    Hi, I am trying to populate a TextView based on the current selected options in 3 Spinner(s) but cant seem to figure out how to retrieve the selected values from the Spinners to invoke the update function with. Here is my current code (quite messy but I'm just learning Java :)), public class AgeFun extends Activity { private String[] dayNames; private String[] yearArray; private final static int START_YEAR = 1990; private static TextView textDisp; private Button calcButton; private static Spinner spinnerDay, spinnerYear, spinnerMonth; private static ArrayAdapter<?> monthAdapter, dayAdapter, yearAdapter; private int year, month, day; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); year = 2000; month = 1; day = 1; textDisp = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1); calcButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button); calcButton.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { // Perform action on clicks AgeFun.updateAge(year, month, day); } }); // Month spinner spinnerMonth = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinnerFirst); monthAdapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource( this, R.array.monthList, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item); monthAdapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); spinnerMonth.setAdapter(monthAdapter); // Day spinner dayNames = new String[31]; for(int i =1; i <= 31; ++i) { dayNames[i-1] = Integer.toString(i); } spinnerDay = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinnerSecond); dayAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<CharSequence>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, dayNames); spinnerDay.setAdapter(dayAdapter); // Year spinner yearArray = new String[40]; for(int i =0; i < 40; ++i) { yearArray[i] = Integer.toString(START_YEAR+i); } spinnerYear = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinnerThird); yearAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<CharSequence>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, yearArray); spinnerYear.setAdapter(yearAdapter); updateAge(2000,1,1); } private static void updateAge(int year, int month, int day) { Date dob = new GregorianCalendar(year, month, day).getTime(); Date currDate = new Date(); long age = (currDate.getTime() - dob.getTime()) / (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24) / 365; textDisp.setText("Your are " + Long.toString(age) + " years old"); } } Any help with this would be great.   • Random number from a range in a Bash Script

    - by Jack
    Hi, I need to generate a random port number between 2000-65000 from a shell script. The problem is $RANDOM is only a 16bit number, so im stuck! PORT=$(($RANDOM%63000+2001)) would work nicely if it wasn't for the size limitation. Does anyone have an example of how I can do this, maybe by extracting something from /dev/urandom and getting it within a range? Thanks.
