  • Apache Proxy Pass and Web Sockets

    I'm using Apache with the mod_proxy module to reverse proxy my Node.js application through to port 80, so that we can access it as an internal application. I have a file in sites-enabled which contains this: VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/internal/ ServerName internal ServerAlias internal <Directory /var/www/internal/public/> Options All AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> ProxyRequests off <Proxy *> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Proxy> ProxyPass / http://localhost:8080/ retry=0 ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8080/ ProxyPreserveHost on ProxyTimeout 1200 LogLevel debug AllowEncodedSlashes on </VirtualHost> As I said, our application is written in Node.js and we're using socket.io to make use of web-sockets, as our application also contains realtime elements to it. The problem is, mod_proxy doesn't seem to handle web sockets and we get errors when trying to use them: WebSocket connection to 'ws://bloot/socket.io/1/websocket/nHtTh6ZwQjSXlmI7UMua' failed: Unexpected response code: 502 How can we fix this issue and keep sockets working, as the only way we can get it working currently is to access the site via ip:port which we don't want to do. Also, as a side question, how can I get ErrorDocument to work properly? Our error files are stored in /var/www/internal/public/error/ but they seem to get put through the proxy too?

  • Why can a local root turn into any LDAP user?

    I know this has been asked here before, but I am not satisfied with the answers and don't know if it's ok to revive and hijack an older question. We have workstations that authenticate users on an LDAP server. However, the local root user can su into any LDAP user without needing a password. From my perspective this sounds like a huge security problem that I would hope could be avoided at the server level. I can imagine the following scenario where a user can impersonate another and don't know how to prevent it: UserA has limited permissions, but can log into a company workstation using their LDAP password. They can cat /etc/ldap.conf and figure out the LDAP server's address and can ifconfig to check out their own IP address. (This is just an example of how to get the LDAP address, I don't think that is usually a secret and obscurity is not hard to overcome) UserA takes out their own personal laptop, configures authentication and network interfaces to match the company workstation and plugs in the network cable from the workstation to their laptop, boots and logs in as local root (it's his laptop, so he has local root) As root, they su into any other user on LDAP that may or may not have more permissions (without needing a password!), but at the very least, they can impersonate that user without any problem. The other answers on here say that this is normal UNIX behavior, but it sounds really insecure. Can the impersonated user act as that user on an NFS mount for example? (the laptop even has the same IP address). I know they won't be able to act as root on a remote machine, but they can still be any other user they want! There must be a way to prevent this on the LDAP server level right? Or maybe at the NFS server level? Is there some part of the process that I'm missing that actually prevents this? Thanks!!

  • What are some good, free tools to run automated security audits for PHP code?

    I've been looking for some time now and have come up short. The most promising I found was Spike PHP, which seems to no longer work. I'm looking to scan my code for potential risks of SQL Injection, XSS, etc. I've gone through most of my code manually, but with a few hundred thousand lines of code, I'm sure I missed things. If possible, are there any tools that can be downloaded and analyze code on my local machine rather than installing to the live server (this isn't a requirement if not)?

  • How can I prevent my volume from changing when initiating a Skype call?

    I already know about the option in Control Panel Sound Communications, so please don't bother pointing me there. I am using the Skype Modern UI app and whenever I start a call, it lowers the volume of anything else that I have active. How can I resolve this issue? Also, not sure if this is related, but any Modern UI music apps also lower their own volume when they are not in the foreground.   • I just restarted Apache and now the server is down

    I am pretty terrified right now. I'm scared I'm going to get a call in a couple minutes from a hundred people saying the website doesn't work. I was at the terminal changing some configuration files when I went to restart the server to update the .conf files with this command: /etc/init.d/apache2 graceful After I ran that, none of the websites work and I have no idea what to do. There are about 100 errors I am getting according to the log files. They all begin with "PHP Notice" and most relate to "use of undefined constant" Also, I just spoke with a coworker, describing what I did, and he noticed that there are two installations of apache on the server and that I restarted the one that we don't use. The problem was (as you experts facepalming probably know) that it couldn't access an error log in the directory I was working in. I created an empty error log file and tried the restart command again and now all the sites are back up... Though my original problem is still there.. Thanks to all those who offered advice, it really helped and let me breathe for a moment.

  • SQL 2008 Reporting Services Report Manager blank on Win 7

    I have installed SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services on my development laptop running windows 7. When I browse to the report manager, only the header is shown. The content pane is blank, and there is no 'Site Settings' option, New Folder options, etc. I found plenty of similar stories about SQL 2005, and then the fix was to manage permissions in the virtual directory in IIS. However, in 2008, there is no virtual directory - RS manages this outside of IIS. Per other serverfault articles, I've tried the following: adding my account to the reporting services group changing the service to run as local system made sure localhost was trusted site in IE ran IE as admin installed SQL Server 2008 SP1 There are no errors in the event viewer. Perhaps related, if I browse to the webservice, I also get the error: The permissions granted to user 'Computer\User' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)

  • Import exponetial fixed width format data into Excel

    I've received a bunch of text data files consiting of Lots of records (30K/file) of 3 fields each of 5-place numbers in exponential format: s0.nnnnnEsee (where s is +/-, n is a digit and ee is the exponent (always 2 digit). When I open the file in Notepad, the format is perfectly uniform throughout each file, but when I import it to Excel using Data|Import|Fixed Width, many of the data values get messed up, no matter what format (text, exponential, various custom tries) I assign to the cells. Looking at the Notepad version, it appears that leading + signs were replaced with a space in the data file, but the sign of the exponential is always there. This means that some fields begin with a space, and this appears to confuse the Excel import routine. I get the same result in Excel 2003 and 2007. I'm sure there's a straightforward solution (hopefully without a messy VBA routine), but I can't figure out what to try next. :-) To clarify (hopefully), here are some input records and the corresponding text input to Excel: Notepad Excel -0.11311E+01 0.10431E-04 0.27018E-03 -0.11311E 1.0431E-05 2.7018E-04 0.19608E+00-0.81414E-02-0.89553E-02 0.19608E -8.1414E-03 8.9553E-03 etc. Whoopee! Solved my own problem - in the spirit of Jeopardy, now that I've begun the question, here's the answer - Use a different "File Origin" - several other than the default "Unicode UTF..." work fine!   • Troubleshoot Perl module installation on Mac OS X

    I'm trying to install the Perl module Set::IntervalTree on Mac OS X. I recently installed it today on an Ubuntu box with no problem.   • SSL certificate for ISAPI redirected Web Site

    I have a Win 2003 server and I'm using Ionics Isapi Rewrite Filter to redirect requests made to a Web Site configured in IIS to another Apache2 Server in a server not exposed to the Internet. The Web Site has its host headers configured to catch requests for the specific site, and the redirection is being done with the ProxyPass directive. This is working OK. So far the scenario, my question is: I'd like to add a server certificate to the Apache server, but I don´t know if I need to add the certificate to both Apache and IIS sites. I think I still don´t get the theory behind this and would like to know from someone with expertise in the field the right way to implement this. Thank you in advance.

  • I just restarted Apache and now the server is down

    I am pretty terrified right now. I'm scared I'm going to get a call in a couple minutes from a hundred people saying the website doesn't work. I was at the terminal changing some configuration files when I went to restart the server to update the .conf files with this command: /etc/init.d/apache2 graceful After I ran that, none of the websites work and I have no idea what to do. There are about 100 errors I am getting according to the log files. They all begin with "PHP Notice" and most relate to "use of undefined constant" Also, I just spoke with a coworker, describing what I did, and he noticed that there are two installations of apache on the server and that I restarted the one that we don't use. The problem was (as you experts facepalming probably know) that it couldn't access an error log in the directory I was working in. I created an empty error log file and tried the restart command again and now all the sites are back up... Though my original problem is still there..   • Windows Upgrade vs Full Install

    I'm in the process of purchasing a Netbook for use while traveling. The included OS is XP, however, I would like to upgrade(?) to Windows 7. My question: Does a Windows Upgrade have the same physical footprint and performance as a full install? Does an upgrade leave behind non used files/resources that were originally included in XP? If so, are there ways to reduce this? I'm trying to reduce as much OS bloat as possible. Please let me know if my question is unclear. Thanks. Or maybe some cacheing quirk - I do have Write Back enabled. Does anyone have any suggestions? Tests for me to perform? Or if you require more information, I am happy to provide it! This is a video fileserver for editing machines, so we have a preference for FAST reads over writes. I was just expected more from RAID 50 and 24 drives together...   • Encryption setup for Linux NAS?

    There's a bazillion hard disk encryption HOWTOs, but somehow I can't find one that actually does what I want. Which is: I have a home NAS running Ubuntu, which is being accessed by a Linux and a Win XP client. (Hopefully MacOS X soon...) I want to setup encryption for home dirs on the NAS so that: It does not interfere with the boot process (since the NAS it tucked away in a cupboard), the home dirs should be accessible as a regular file system on the client(s) (e.g. via SMB), it is easy to use by 'normal' people, (so it does not require SSH-ing to the NAS, mount the encrypted partition on command line, then connecting via SMB, and finally umount the partition after being done. I can't explain that to my mom, or in fact to anyone.) does not store the encryption key the NAS itself, encrypts file meta-data and content (i.e. safe against the 'RIAA' attack, where an intruder should not be able to identify which songs are in your MP3 collection). What I hoped to do was use Samba + PAM. The idea was that on connecting to the SMB server, I'd have to enter the password on the client, which sends it to the server for authentication, which would use the password to mount the encrpytion partition, and would unmount it again when the session was closed. Turns out that doesn't really work, because SMB does not transmit the password in the plain and hence I can't configure PAM to use the incoming password to mount the encrypted patition. So... anything I'm overlooking? Is there any way in which I can use the password entered on the client (e.g. on SMB connect) to initiate mounting the encrypted dir on the server?

  • Simple SSH public/private key question

    I am trying to learn this instead of just following guides so I can recommend proper actions when people do ask (and they do). Here is what I got down. First, generate both key with command such as this: ssh-keygen -b 2048 -t rsa -C comment -f ~/.ssh/id_rsa Then you push the public part of the key into authorized_keys2 file cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 (and then chmod it to 600 or similar) And you download the private key to your computer (id_rsa) and feed that in to Putty to be read and authenticate. Are these the correct steps to setting this public/private key authentication for passwordless login to SSH?

  • Are animated GIFs supported in Google Chrome?

    I have recently been testing a website and found animated gif images that seem to show fine in IE and Firefox but in Google Chrome they only show briefly and then dissapear! This happens if I view the image on the page or view the file directly. Are there any reported problems in displaying GIFs in Chrome, or is it just being fussy? There seemed to have been some problems in older versions of Chrome, but it's hard to believe something as simple as this wouldn't have been fixed by now. The version of Google Chrome I am using is: 4.1.249.1021 Not sure if this is relevant, but some info about the image: Width: 216 pixels Height: 36 pixels Horizontal resolution: 96dpi Vertical resolution: 96dpi Bit Depth: 32 Frame Count: 3 EDIT: Seems to be a problem relating to the latest beta version of Chrome, as it works fine in 4.0.249

    While attempting to install .NET 3.5 SP1 on a fresh install of Windows 7 RC, nothing happens. The machine gives a UAC prompt. When selecting Yes, nothing happens. Using the full redistributable package gives the same result: nothing. Is there a reason why the .NET 3.5 SP1 installer would suddenly quit and not proceed with installation?

  • Cannot upgrade to Lion using DVD

    When I first setup my MBP on 10.6 I made a lot of newb mistakes, and was unable to get Ruby on Rails to install, amongst a lot of other things. Because of this, I decided to backup everything on to a Time Machine HDD and re-install Lion. I had a bunch of problems but managed to sort them out, requiring me to go back to 10.6 from the original disc that came with the MBP. Before I did anything however, I burnt the Lion installer that I got from the App Store to a DVD. Now though, when I try to run it, I get the following: Cannot download additional components. I've managed to download software updates, so I know it can connect to the Apple servers.

  • Running complete Native Linux on phones that are bootloader-unlocked [on hold]

    Since there are many phones (HTC, Samsung, LG, Nexus) today that have bootloader unlocked, I want to ask what's preventing them from running a complete native GNU/Linux. GNU/Linux has ARM port and we can run a command line GNU/Linux on top of Android by the method of chroot. So, what's preventing for existing bootloader unlocked Android phones from running a complete GNU/Linux natively? The device should get a long shelf life if it has one such port. My few thoughts.. Proprietary drivers for hardware that cannot be made to work when using a different OS. And the binary provider will never support any OS other than what the phone is shipped with. Application Interface. The interface for desktop apps doesn't fit to the mobile display with different PPI. Kernel. Since android devices use Linux kernel whose sources should be available, could the device kernel be modified to work with GNU/Linux. And any other reasons?
