Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome Shell new window focus problem

I'm using gnome shell with new ubuntu for few days now and have experienced really annoying behaviour with new windows. Sometimes when I use another window and press e.g. Alt Ctrl T to open new terminal window, I don't get this window being brought to front. Instead I get notification at the bottom that "New terminal window is ready to use". The same is with Pidgin being integrated with gnome shell (via extension). Every time I get new message, window pops up but doesn't show. I need to either Alt Tab it or click the notification. Is there any way to have new windows being always brought to front, and remove those annoying "Window is ready" notifications?

Dual boot problem - Ubuntu windows 7

I've been using Ubuntu for a while on my laptop. Recently, I decided to install Ubuntu on my main desktop PC (dual boot with windows 7). I downloaded the Ubuntu installer for windows and installed it (it's now showing Ubuntu in the installed software in my W7 control panel). However, when I tried to boot Ubuntu, after the boot loader and the login screen, my screen splitted in half. I was not able to see the icons and the launcher. I was also not able to do anything. I uninstalled Ubuntu and tried again twice. Same thing/results. Then, I created a partition in W7 and installed Ubuntu on it. Unfortunately, it's doing the same thing. I never saw something like this. Any idea??? Thanks for your help and support.

Big problem: Complete computer crash (no response when booted)

I need your help: I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer (I removed the complete system and installed Ubuntu instead) It said that the bootloader installation failed. So I chose the only partition that existed again. Installation succesful. Restart your computer. I did this. Then it went black when it rebooted (only a flickering stroke appears). No ISOs are executable. BIOS Boot Device Priority says: 1st Boot Device [SATA:PM-SAMSUNG HM] That was all I can say, please help me!

HP DL360 G4 screen resolution problem

I just bought an old blade server to mess about with at home and cant get the thing to work. I have run the installer 11.10 x64 server and that was fine. After installing and rebooting, POST is fine but when grub kicks in the screen shows a popup type box complaining that it cant use the resolution. I have tried different screens and its always the same. I can reboot and go back into the installer and the screen is fine. I tried to follow some guides on-line about changing the resolution but I cant get a terminal. I found one in the installer but that is using the ram as /. the installer says 'the drive is mounted as "/target"' but I don't see that, nor /mnt/target. Could anyone help me configure this and get it running. Thanks.

The Importance of Fully Specifying a Problem

I had a customer call this week where we were provided a forced crashdump and asked to determine why the system was hung. Normally when you are looking at a hung system, you will find a lot of threads blocked on various locks, and most likely very little actually running on the system (unless it's threads spinning on busy wait type locks). This vmcore showed none of that. In fact we were seeing hundreds of threads actively on cpu in the second before the dump was forced. This prompted the question back to the customer: What exactly were you seeing that made you believe that the system was hung? It took a few days to get a response, but the response that I got back was that they were not able to ssh into the system and when they tried to login to the console, they got the login prompt, but after typing "root" and hitting return, the console was no longer responsive. This description puts a whole new light on the "hang". You immediately start thinking "name services". Looking at the crashdump, yes the sshds are all in door calls to nscd, and nscd is idle waiting on responses from the network. Looking at the connections I see a lot of connections to the secure ldap port in CLOSE_WAIT, but more interestingly I am seeing a few connections over the non-secure ldap port to a different LDAP server just sitting open. My feeling at this point is that we have an either non-responding LDAP server, or one that is responding slowly, the resolution being to investigate that server. Moral When you log a service ticket for a "system hang", it's great to get the forced crashdump first up, but it's even better to get a description of what you observed to make to believe that the system was hung.

I just installed Ubuntu 13.10, and really enjoy it. I am from Denmark, and use the supported Danish keyboard-layout (and chose it as default in the install), but whenever i reboot Ubuntu switches back to English keyboard-layout, though the little icon in the panel says it's in Danish. I have to click on the icon every time to change it back to Danish. I tried removing the English keyboard-layout, but it didn't help. Any suggestions?

Internet slow on one router only [the problem only in Ubuntu] [on hold]

Internet works perfectly on every other router, but browsing sucks at home (slow browsing and slow loading times). I changed DNS servers to 8.8.0.0, still doesn't help. And funnily, download speed is extremely high on this network (meaning torrents for example), but using browsers and loading websites is extremely slow (only on this network). Do I need to change something in router settings or what can I try? By the way, I use wired connection to router. EDIT: There's no problems when using Windows. Problem with wake after suspend using USB remote.

Hi, I'm a linux newbie looking for some help. I'm currently setting up an XBMC HTPC using a laptop and 10.10 and all works great except for waking from resume using the power button on the remote. The suspend works from remote works fine as does the resume using the power button on the laptop. I've checked /proc/acpi/wakeup which initially showed the following. Is there a way on how to stay the texts in center without manually coding it or something, especially when making an update? I'm making a display for the highest score. Let's say that the score is 9. However, if the score is 9,999,999, the text displays still only at the fixed X and Y coordinate. Is there really a way to stay the text in center especially when there is changes when a player beats the new world record? Here's my code inside Sprite Batch: font.setScale(1.5f); font.draw(batch, "HIGHEST SCORE:", (900/10)*1 + 60, (1280/16)*10); font.draw(batch, "" + 9999999 + "", (900/10)*4, (1280/16)*8); batch.draw(grid_guide, 0, 0, 900, 1280); // --> For testing purpose only. // Where 9999999 is a new record score for example. Here's the image shown as example. I add it some red grid so that I could check if the display of score when updated will always display on center no matter how many digits takes place in. However, it is fixed, so I have to figure it out how to display it automatically on center regardless of the number of digits while updating for the new highscore. I have used the LibGDX preferences very well though to save and load records for the highscore.

Hi, I have a web application written by asp.net (c#) sql server 2005. we host it on 2 dedicated server ( IIS and SQL server ) From some month ago , in some days of week we have many reports about speed issue. we have some other application on this server using same database. when we have speed problem all aplication on these server have this problem, but applications on other server in same data center work correctly. ram and cpu usage are ok. how can I check that the problem related to internet connection or my application design? which parameters must be checked. Some other information In applications users can upload several files to server , each file up to 3 MB. we use a sql web admin application, on same server that has same problem, this is a standard application which work perfectly on other servers. I need an approach to the problem of preventing inserting duplicate records into the database

Apologies is this question is asked on the incorrect "stack" A webservice that I call returns a list of data. The data from the webservice is updated periodically, so a call to the webservice done in one hour could return the same data as a call done in an hour. Also, the data is returned based on a start and end date. We have multiple users that can run the webservice search, and duplicate data is most likely to be returned (especially for historical data). However I don't want to insert this duplicate data in the database. I've created a db table in which the data is stored (most important columns are) Id int autoincrement PK Date date not null --The date to which the data set belongs. LastUpdate date not null --The date the data set was last updated. UserName varchar(50) --The name of the user doing the search. I use sql server 2008 express with c# 4.0 and visual studio 2010. Entity Framework is used as the ORM. If stored procedures could be avoided in the proposed solution, then that will be a plus. Another way of looking interpreting what I'm asking a solution for is as follows: I have a million unique records in my table. A user does a new search. The search results from the user contains around 300k of the data that is already in the db. An efficient solution to finding an inserting only the unique records is needed.

Internet connection problem,ping ok , but outlook and browsers dont work

Hi, From some days ago I have a big problem on my laptop( run windows xp sp3) When I connect to internet I can ping web sites but when try to browse them some times it work correctly and some times the connection to server intrupted and I have to refresh the page several times. in this case browser show a connection problem immediatly after I click on address bar or a link on page( wihtout any try to connect to server) I use FireFox and opera and both of them have this problem. try another ISP and still I have this problem. I didnt use any proxy server and check the proxy setting. In this case Outlook also can't connect to mail server. this problem anfter some time or after restart windows have been fixed for a while. I check for virus and can't find anything. Is there any idea how can I fix it? UPDATE: Thanks for your responses. I test them , also I use Open DNS setting and that dosent help me. last night I see that my local web application ( such as Adsl modem config web site , and sites that I set up on windows xo IIS ) aslo can't open and Internal Communication error apears ( Opera Message) that didnt relate to DNS settings or Internet connection.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 for two days now. Thats something pretty strange because normally thats done in about half an hour. It doesn't boot whatever I try. I got several different types of not-booting until now. All without significant error messages. Now that I'm running out of ideas I thought maybe one of you is able to find my mistake. Problem connecting to Webmin

I have installed Webmin with the view to try an understand what is all running. Yesterday I had it setup with login and password, but today when I try to get access to the server with: https://ubuntu:10000/ in order to login, I get unable to connect, the page does not load. Seems like there is no connection. I tried http://localhost:10000 and https://localhost:10000 They both returned the same unable to connect response. I am not sure of what it means to turn https on. ... the https and http is not showing. Am I going about this the wrong way?
