• Using C++ but not using the language's specific features, should switch to C?

  I'm developing a NES emulator as a hobby, in my free time. I use C++ because is the language I use mostly, know mostly and like mostly. But now that I made some advance into the project I realize I'm not using almost any specific features of C++, and could have done it in plain C and getting the same result. I don't use templates, operator overloading, polymorphism, inheritance. So what would you say? should I stay in C++ or rewrite it in C? I won't do this to gain in performance, it could come as a side effect, but the idea is why should I use C++ if I don't need it? The only features of C++ I'm using is classes to encapsulate data and methods, but that can be done as well with structs and functions, I'm using new and delete, but could as well use malloc and free, and I'm using inheritance just for callbacks, which could be achieved with pointers to functions. Remember, it's a hobby project, I have no deadlines, so the overhead time and work that would require a re-write are not a problem, might be fun as well. So, the question is C or C++?

• Unable to detect windows hard drive while running Ubuntu 12.04 from USB

  I am completely new to Ubuntu. I experimented with Ubuntu 12.04 by running it from a USB drive, in-order to recover files from my hard disc. History: My laptop is an IBM R60 running windows 7. Suddenly it gave me an error stating "error 2100 - Hard drive initialization error". I have read all the forums and most of them suggested that I remove and replace my HDD and that did not work. And one site suggested to try using Ubuntu to recover files. I booted my system from USB, and once Ubuntu came up, I choose "Try Ubuntu". It came up fine and I was able to surf ,and do other things, etc. I was unable to to access my files which are on the hard disc and "Attached Devices" is grayed out. 1- Is there any way to gain access to my hard disc to recover the files? How do I navigate to search for my files. 2- Is it just simply not possible if the hard disc themselves are not working? Is that why I`m unable to find the drives. I know its a very novice question, but hoping someone would help me out. Thank you, Eapen

• Password not working for sudo ("Authentication failure")

  Before I mention anything further, DO NOT give me a response saying that terminal won't show password input. I'm AWARE of that. I'm typing my user password in (not a capslock issue), and for some reason it still says 'Authentication Failure'. Is there some other password (one I'm not aware of) I'm supposed to be using other than my user password? I've had this ubuntu before, on another hard drive and I didn't have this problem. • What to do as a new team lead on a project with maintainability problems?

  I have just been put in charge of a code project with maintainability problems. What things can I do to get the project on a stable footing? I find myself in a place where we are working with a very large multi-tiered .NET system that is missing a lot of the important things such as unit tests, IOC, MEF, too many static classes, pure datasets etc. I'm only 24 but I've been here for almost three years (this app has been in development for 5) and mostly due to time constraints we've been just adding in more crap to fit the other crap. After doing a number of projects in my free time I have begun to understand just how important all those concepts are. Also due to employee shifting I find myself to now be the team lead on this project and I really want to come up with some smart ways to improve this app. Ways where the value can be explained to management. I have ideas of what I would like to do but they all seem so overwhelming without much upfront gain. Any stories of how people have or would have dealt with this would be a very interesting read. • Cheap ways to do scaling ops in shader?

  I've got an extensive world terrain that uses vec3 for the vertex position attribute. That's good, because the terrain has endless gradations due to the use of floating point. But I'm thinking about how to reduce the amount of data uploaded to the GPU. For my terrain, which uses discrete / grid-based vertex positions in x and z, it's pretty clear that I can replace my vec3s (floats, really) with shorts, halving the per-vertex position attribute cost from 12 bytes each to 6 bytes. Considering I've got little enough other vertex data, and an enormous amount of terrain data to push into the world, it's a major gain. Currently in my code, one unit in GLSL shaders is equal to 1m in the world. I like that scale. If I move over to using shorts, though, I won't be able to use the same scale, as I would then have a very blocky world where every step in height is an entire metre. So I see these potential solutions to scale the positional data correctly once it arrives at the vertex shader stage: Use 10:1 scaling, i.e. 1 short unit = 1 decimetre in CPU-side code. Do a division by 10 in the vertex shader to scale incoming decimetre values back to metres. Arbirary (non-PoT) divisions tend to be slow, however. Use (some-power-of-two):1 scaling (eg. 8:1), which enables the use of a bitshift (eg. val >> 3) to do the division... not sure how performant this is in shaders, though. Not as intuitive to read values, but possibly quite a bit faster than div by a non-PoT value. Use a texture as lookup table. I've heard that this is really fast. Or whatever solutions others can offer to achieve the same results -- minimal vertex data with sensible scaling.

• Computer Science graduate. Master or full-time job? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is a Master's worth it? I have just gotten my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and I have to make choice. Whether to continue with my full-time job I just got or put the job slightly in the background and concentrate on getting a Master's degree. I am currently working as an embedded C developer in a small company. The cool thing is that, because the team is quite small, my engineering ideas really play a part in the final product. Not to mention that I get to work on very different areas of embedded programming: device drivers and development of a Real Time OS. I am very enthusiastic about my job and what I do. On the other hand, in my country there isn't really a master's degree that focuses on embedded development so my gain from getting this degree will mainly in the field of general computer science knowledge. That being said, is it worth giving up all my spare time which I now use to study different areas of embedded devices and work mainly to get a degree rather than pure knowledge and experience in the field I want to work in?

• Should I make my project free software?

  The story Over the last couple month I have been working on a pretty big project. It's an enterprise-level software, I designed to be used at a local gym, but I believe it can be used in other places, where things like keeping track of clients, attendances, purchases and payments are required. The problem Well recently, I started to think on how to mature this project from being home-made. Not just because I want my project to grow but also because I would like to have some gain from it. The solutions? And here I saw 2 paths: License the software under some restricted license and try to sell the software to other business around. This way I can get some money for college (I am a high school junior right now) License the software under some free license, publish it on GitHub or something, and try to engage other developers to participate in the project. This way I get experience of working in a team and a better chance that the project will keep growing. The latter would be a good + for my resume, when I'll trying to find a job. So far both ways seem pretty exciting and beneficial to me. The first one offers a good college career, while the second one offers some additional experience and the project's growth. The questions Can anyone point to some other +/- of these 2 options? What would the better option in my situation and why? Or are there other options?

• How should I compress a file with multiple bytes that are the same with Huffman coding?

  On my great quest for compressing/decompressing files with a Java implementation of Huffman coding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huffman_coding) for a school assignment, I am now at the point of building a list of prefix codes. Such codes are used when decompressing a file. Basically, the code is made of zeroes and ones, that are used to follow a path in a Huffman tree (left or right) for, ultimately, finding a byte. In this Wikipedia image, to reach the character m the prefix code would be 0111 The idea is that when you compress the file, you will basically convert all the bytes of the file into prefix codes instead (they tend to be smaller than 8 bits, so there's some gain). So every time the character m appears in a file (which in binary is actually 1101101), it will be replaced by 0111 (if we used the tree above). Therefore, 1101101110110111011011101101 becomes 0111011101110111 in the compressed file. I'm okay with that. But what if the following happens: In the file to be compressed there exists only one unique byte, say 1101101. There are 1000 of such byte. Technically, the prefix code of such byte would be... none, because there is no path to follow, right? I mean, there is only one unique byte anyway, so the tree has just one node. Therefore, if the prefix code is none, I would not be able to write the prefix code in the compressed file, because, well, there is nothing to write. Which brings this problem: how would I compress/decompress such file if it is impossible to write a prefix code when compressing? (using Huffman coding, due to the school assignment's rules) This tutorial seems to explain a bit better about prefix codes: http://www.cprogramming.com/tutorial/computersciencetheory/huffman.html but doesn't seem to address this issue either.

• Configuring an Engenius 3500

  The title speaks to only half of the issue: the other half are the settings in Ubuntu and the sequences therein. The computer in this issue does receive internet with the external antenna jack at the back being fed with a simple magnetic base antenna designed for putting on the roof of an automobile. However, that signal is weak and the Engenius with an external antenna (Rootenna ~15db gain) and ehternet wire will supply a stronger, faster signal. I've set the Engenius to the desired source and entered the correct WEP password. The lights on the Engenius indicate that it's connected to the access point. At the Ubuntu side of this I've worked to no avail changing settings with "Edit Connections" to the point I'm Ask(ing)Ubuntu for help. I have and have RTFM for Engenius 3500 There is an embarrassing side note to this issue: At one time I had the Engenius working! It seems that I can't recall the settings and sequences I used way back when. And I may as well confess to not knowing the Command Line. I'm a GUI guy. Thank you for your time, Doug

My questions are: What happens when you close your Adsense account? If I apply again, then what will be the process to re-gain my account?   I want to be able to write programs (tools) for my own needs, and I want to tell the computer what to do, not to be strict to what other's told it to do. I have a good knowledge of Linux & Windows, I am also have a bit of Python in my head, but I think that I need some guidance on what languages or practices to invest my time into in order to be able to tell the computer what to do. I know there is a lot of posts similar to what I am asking here, but there is a big difference and so I have opened this thread. My goal isn't to work at a company, so I don't need to learn how to work as a team, I don't need to learn as much how to maintain my code nor how to write it nice for others to understand (I know it is important but not for me). I don't want to learn it as a profession, but as a serious hobby (you can call it hacking as long as you know what cracking means), my end goal is to be able to understand other's people code, and to write my own code with a lot of deep knowledge of the ins and outs of the computer system in order to gain from it as much as I can. So in essence my questions are: How can I understand, in depth, computers, in order to exploit them as much as I can? What should I learn? Are there any books that I should read? Is it possible to do this, or do I have to learn every aspect of programming?

  No doubt, with all the media reports about stolen databases and private information, a major concern when committing to a public or private cloud must be preventing unauthorized access of data and applications. In this article, we discuss the security features of Oracle Solaris 11 that provide a bullet-proof cloud environment. As an example, we show how the Oracle Solaris Remote Lab implementation utilizes these features to provide a high level of security for its users. Note: This is the second article in a series on cloud building with Oracle Solaris 11. See Part 1 here.  When we build a cloud, the following aspects related to the security of the data and applications in the cloud become a concern: • Sensitive data must be protected from unauthorized access while residing on storage devices, during transmission between servers and clients, and when it is used by applications. • When a project is completed, all copies of sensitive data must be securely deleted and the original data must be kept permanently secure. • Communications between users and the cloud must be protected to prevent exposure of sensitive information from “man in a middle attacks.” • Limiting the operating system’s exposure protects against malicious attacks and penetration by unauthorized users or automated “bots” and “rootkits” designed to gain privileged access. • Strong authentication and authorization procedures further protect the operating system from tampering. • Denial of Service attacks, whether they are started intentionally by hackers or accidentally by other cloud users, must be quickly detected and deflected, and the service must be restored. • btrfs and missing free space

  I converted my ext4 partition to btrfs and deleted the save subvolume after doing so. Then I enabled the compression (lzo) of the filessystem in the fstab file and everything is correct so far. Then I forced the compression of all files using the defragmentation command with the parameter -c that the new compression is applied to all files. While doing so, I noticed that my ssd got completly filled up - before I had 6gigs of free space. No I got nothing left. easteregg@x201s:~$ btrfs fi df / Data: total=50.00GB, used=49.17GB System: total=32.00MB, used=4.00KB Metadata: total=24.50GB, used=9.86GB and easteregg@x201s:~$ df -ha Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 75G 60G 852M 99% / So now. How can I regain my free space. I expected to gain more space because of the lzo compression. And now! The fs is correctly mounted. easteregg@x201s:~$ mount /dev/sda1 on / type btrfs (rw,noatime,ssd,compress=lzo) Any ideas how to fix this issue?

• Has the emerging generation of programmers got the wrong idea about design patterns? [closed]

  Over the years I've noticed a shift in attitude towards design patterns, particularly amongst the emerging generation of developers. There seems to be a notion these days that design patterns are silver bullets that instantly cure any problem, a proliferating idea that advancing as a software engineer simply means learning and applying more and more patterns. When confronted with a problem, developers no longer strive to truly understand the issue and design a solution - instead they simply pick a design pattern which seems to be a close fit, and try to brute-force it. You can see evidence of this by the many, many questions on Stack Overflow that begin with the phrase "what pattern should I use to...". I fall into a slightly more mature category of developers (5-10 years experience) and I have a very different viewpoint on patterns - simply as a communication tool to enhance clarity. I find this perspective of design patterns being lego bricks (collected like pokemon cards) a little disconcerting. Will developers lose this attitude as they gain more experience in software engineering? Or could these notions perhaps steer the direction of our craft in years to come? Did the older generation of developers have any similar concerns about us? (perhaps about OO design or similar...). if so, how did we turn out?

• There's Not an App for That (Yet)

  With an earlier-than-normal departure this morning to avoid the stalemate known as traffic congestion, I suddenly realized what I had failed to grab on my way out the door...  my company ID badge.  Unfortunately, at the time of my epiphany, I was far enough into commuter no-man's land where turning back would completely negate my early departure and increase my overall drive time exponentially.  Not being one to retrace my steps, I decided to press on. Upon arrival at the office and with an hour to go before a security guard would be on duty, I started thinking about the number of times I had forgotten my ID vs. the number of times I had forgotten my phone.  While rare on both accounts, my ID was most likely the missing artifact. I then wondered why there isn't an app for my smartphone that allows me to verify my credentials with my employer and then, provided with a secure token for the day, have the ability to access my building's card entry system.  On many levels, this seems much more secure than an ID card which can be lost, stolen or even forged and then used simply by tailgating into and around buildings at facilities where card scanning can generally be avoided.   As it turns out, another building on the campus has 24 x 7 guard coverage, so I was able to gain access in a relatively short time and secure a temporary ID badge.  Once inside and online, a quick internet search on the subject of smartphone badge access shows that efforts are underway to do exactly what I was thinking needed to be done. Having not spent any time studying about the technology, I discovered that it relies on Near Field Communications (NFC) enabled smartphones (of which, mine does not provide).  The only other option would require modifications to the security infrastructure to support alternative authentication technologies, such as barcode readers, which would be extremely costly to implement. For now, my best option is to put my corporate ID under my car keys...

• In C++ Good reasons for NOT using symmetrical memory management (i.e. new and delete)

  I try to learn C++ and programming in general. Currently I am studying open source with help of UML. Learning is my hobby and great one too. My understanding of memory allocation in C++ is that it should be symmetrical. A class is responsible for its resources. If memory is allocated using new it should be returned using delete in the same class. It is like in a library you, the class, are responsibility for the books you have borrowed and you return them then you are done. This, in my mind, makes sense. It makes memory management more manageable so to speak. So far so good. The problem is that this is not how it works in the real world. In Qt for instance, you create QtObjects with new and then hand over the ownership of the object to Qt. In other words you create QtObjects and Qt destroys them for you. Thus unsymmetrical memory management. Obviously the people behind Qt must have a good reason for doing this. It must be beneficial in some kind of way, My questions is: What is the problem with Bjarne Stroustrups idea about a symmetrical memory management contained within a class? What do you gain by splitting new and delete so you create an object and destroy it in different classes like you do in Qt. Is it common to split new and delete and why in such case, in other projects not involving Qt? Thanks for any help shedding light on this mystery!

I started learning website making by having tutorials from w3schools.com but after doing taking the HTML tutorials I don't think I really can do anything with it. Maybe I don't know everything about HTML yet. I know the online tutorials are not enough but what I need you guys to tell me is that how can I learn making some nice websites. I have vacations for two months now and I think it would be the best time for me to learn making websites as I really love to be a website developer. Now I would like to start from the scratch. I know some C language (though I know it will not help me). So tell me from where shall I learn HTML and what all things shall I learn after that and in what order. If you can also help me with the material (let it be books or online tutorials). But I would like to know how can I gain confidence that I can make some websites as just learning online tutorials doesn't help me much. I also tried some video tutorials but in that too, they will just tell me some of the functions and not all. So what am I supposed to do.. just know a limited functions as they want me to know in video tutorials or do something else.

• Efficiency of iterators and alternatives? [migrated]

  I have the following code for my game tiles: std::vector<GameObject_Tile*>::iterator it; for(int y = 0; y < GAME_TILES_Y; y++) { for(int x = 0; x < GAME_TILES_X; x++) { for (it = gameTiles[x][y].tiles.begin() ; it != gameTiles[x][y].tiles.end(); ++it) {}}} tiles is: struct Game_Tile { // More specific object types will be added here eventually vector<GameObject_Tile*> tiles; }; My problem is that if I change the vector to just be a single GameObject_Tile* instead and remove the iterator line in the loop I go from about 200fps to 450fps. Some context: The vector/pointer only contains one object in both scenarios. I will eventually need to store multiple, but for testing I just set it to a single pointer. The loop goes through 2,300 objects each frame and draws them. I would like to point out that if I remove the Draw (not seen int he example) method, I gain about 30 frames in both scenarios, the issue is the iteration. So I am wondering why having this as a vector being looped through by an iterator (to get at a single object) is costing me over 200 frames when compared to it being a single pointer? Unfortunately this is not accomplished by the vs2012 implementation of accumulate. Internally accumulate calls another function _Accumulate and the rvalue functionality gets lost in the process. It I instead call the _Accumulate function like so string words = Accumulate(wordArray.begin(), wordArray.end(), move(test), adder); I get the intended performance gain. Must the std library be rewritten to take rvalue arguments into consideration? Is there some other way I may use accumulate to accomplish what I want without cheating to much?

  Businessweek's 2012 Interview Issue has interviews with three retail CEOs that are worth a quick read.  I copied some excerpts below, but please follow the links to the entire interviews. Ron Johnson, CEO JCPenney Take me through your merchandising. One of the things I learned from Steve [Jobs]—Steve said three times in his life he had the chance to be part of the change of an interface. If you change the interface, you can dramatically change the entire experience of the product. For Steve, that was the mouse, the scroll wheel on the iPod, and then the [touch]screen. What we’re trying to do here is change the interface of retail. What we call that is the street, and you’re standing in the middle of it. When you walk into a store today, you’re overwhelmed by merchandise. There is a narrow aisle. Typically, it’s filled with product on tables and you’re overwhelmed with the noise of signs and promotions. Especially in the age of the Internet, the idea of going to a very large store and having so much abundance is actually not very appealing. The first thing you find here is you’re inspired. I have used the mannequins. The street is actually this new navigation path for a retail store. So if you come in here—you’ll notice that these aisles are 14 feet wide. Walter Robb, co-CEO Whole Foods What did you learn from the recent recession about selling groceries?It was a lot of humble pie, because our sales experienced a drop that I have never seen in 32 years of retail. Customers left us in droves. We also learned that there were some very loyal customers who loved Whole Foods (WFM), people who said, “I like what you stand for. I like coming here. I like this experience.” That was very affirming. I think the realization was that we’ve got some customers, and we need to make sure we know who they are. So instead of chasing every customer out there, we started doing customer discussion groups. We were growing for growth’s sake, which is not a good strategy. We were chasing the rainbow. We cut the growth in half overnight and said, “All right, slow down. Let’s make sure we’re doing this better and more thoroughly and more thoughtfully.” This company is a mission-based company. This company started to change the world by bringing healthier food to the world. It’s not about the money, it’s about the impact, and this company is back on track as a result of those experiences. Video of Whole Foods store tour. Kay Krill, CEO Ann Taylor You’ve worked in retail all your life. What drew you to it?I graduated from college, and I did not know what I wanted to do. Macy’s (M) came to campus to interview for their training program, and I thought, “Let me give it a try.” I got the job and fell in love with the industry. The president of Macy’s at the time said, “If you don’t wake up every morning dying to go to work, then retailing is not for you; it has to be in your blood.” It was in my blood. I love the fact that every day is different. You can get to be creative one day, financial the next day, marketing the next. I love going to stores. I love talking to associates. I love talking to clients. There’s not a predictable day.
