Is it normal for a software developer to have lots of issues after product went live?

In recent months, our product (which went live probably 9 months ago) experience an increase in the number of users using it. We faced lots of queries, problems, and complaints from users. Sadly, it seems that a lot of the issues seem to be coming from a module that I have been working on. At times, I wonder if I am incompetent, or is this pretty normal in software development, that bugs are found especially during the initial stages of a software development livecycle after it goes live? I wonder why some issues we faced now are not foreseen by me or the team during development phase. I have been working as a software developer for close to 2 years now. Google Analytics: tracking subdomains for a profile defined for a subdomain

Hope you can help. We have set up a single property under our Google Analytics account. That property's default URL is set to subdomain1.example.com. We would now like to track multiple subdomains for example.com, under the same property. Seems easy enough: we just need to add _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'example.com']); to our tracking code, right? But my question is: does it matter if a) we don't need to track www.example.com (this is tracked under a seperate account and property) and b) the default URL for our property is set to subdomain1.example.com? Will either of these have any impact on data collection?

Where to start for writing a simple java IDE?

I would like to start working on my own custom IDE. The biggest reason I want to work on the IDE is to help me gain an even greater, more intimate understanding of java (and other languages I add into it.) I don't want to do anything super fancy or revolutionary, I'd be happy if I could create something as compact as the BlueJ IDE I used in high school and be content. I have a few question on the specifics of the task that I hope I can get cleared up before I start investing time in this: Is there anything I should be aware of when writing the parser? Does anyone have any pointers that I should be aware of; pitfalls, brick walls or other constraints?

I install Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2, I found out the my graphic driver is "Unknown" and experience is "Standard". Here is explained what to do on Windows or Mac, and here I found a guide about how to do it with ubuntu, but it's not working to me (at the end of all the steps, I can't access to the mounted folder). I can access to the storage through Konqueror (I'm using KDE), but I would like to access to it also without it. Any suggestion?

I'm the .1x programmer at my company. How can I best contribute?

I work at a newly-minted startup of five people. We have a Ph. D in machine learning, a former member of the RSpec core team, and the guy who compiles the Git binary for OS X. That's just the employees; the founder has a Ph. D and was CTO for a multi-billion-dollar corporation before leaving to start a (successful) startup, and has now left that to start this one. We also might get a guy with a Ph. D in math. Aaaaaaaaand then there's me, college-dropout intern. I think I'm pretty smart and I'm reading non-stop, but the delta of experience, skill, and knowledge between me and my co-workers is just breathtaking. So put yourself in their shoes: you've got a bright young intern who has a lot to learn but is at least energetic. What would be annoying? What use would you hope to get out of him in the here and now? What would be pleasantly surprising if it happened?

exchange live feed with pre-recorded video for wireless internet camera to router

I wasn't sure if this should be asked in Web Applications, or Network Engineering, or what... Long story short, I have a video camera with mic that is wirelessly connected to a router (NETGEAR R6200), which can then be viewed through an online service. I would like to be able to somehow exchange the live feed with a pre-recorded video, or image, preferably with pre-recorded sound (the sound of silence would be easiest). Can I place this inbetween the camera and the router, do I need to redirect the camera feed to my laptop first, and then push out the fake video/audio onto the router, without the service knowing the difference? How to keep specific old kernel on my next kernel upgrade?

I just updated my Ubuntu 14.04 and got a new kernel. This new kernel is not working properly for me so I booted the previous version. Let's call this good old working version "3.13.0-24.47". Now, I want to keep this "3.13.0-24.47" version until I decide to delete it manually. I want to be able to upgrade my kernel each time there is a new version in hope of getting the one which works again. Until then, I want to use the "3.13.0-24.47". I'm afraid that next update will delete my "3.13.0-24.47" version because there are only two kernel versions available at a given time on my system (/boot).

Wireless/Bluetooth problems on t43p

I have been struggling to get my wireless mini pcmcia card recognised by 12.04. It suddenly stopped, mid session. I have taken it out and replaced with a couple of spares with slightly different serial numbers. One had no joy - 'unauathorised'. The other worked briefly for thunderbird but not firefox, it seemed. The network controller reads like this: 0b:02.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05) I have ordered a replacement from ebay, and hope I got the right one - used the the FRU number from the one that stopped working. But I have ALWAYS had no joy with my Thinkpad t43p Bluetooth and Ubuntu ( 12.04, and even 11.04 and 11.10, if I remember rightly). Do you think the Bluetooth problem will solve with a new mini pcmcia? Surely not, as it has never worked, whereas Wireless worked until a couple of weeks ago...

Let apache run perlscripts that don't have an extension

I'd like to use perlscripts without their extension. f.e. "index" instead of "index.pl". Changing the DefaultType-directive from text/plain to application/x-perl didn't do the trick. Instead of running the script the server offered to download its source. I'm not exactly sure if changing this directive is the right approach. Telling apache to read the shebang-line when there is no extension sounds much better to me. I hope someone with more experience on this topic can help me out.

How to render Minecraft on the GPU?

Hardware: Intel i7 AMD Radeon HD 6970 SSD with plenty of space 6 GB RAM Software OpenJDK 6, 7, and Oracle Java 7 (reproducible with all three) AMD Catalyst 12.8 and open source driver (reproducible with both) Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 and older Minecraft 1.3.2 vanilla and older On this setup I am getting rubbish frame rates after a short while of playing, dropping from about 45-55 to 15 in a couple of minutes. CPU use is 40-45 even when rendering the opening screen at 1920x1280, and gameRenderer is using about 90% CPU when playing. Rather than trying to eke out a few more FPS out of an obviously broken rendering pipeline, I really hope to find a solution to make the GPU render Minecraft.

I have a website that is hosted in the US which I can access from China. Is there an easy way for me to setup my own secure private proxy? Ubuntu 11.04 windows XP dual boot problem

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from installation disk in a separate partition alongside an existing Windows XP installation. Ubuntu operates fine. I can see the old XP file system and the other network computer and access the internet. The problem is when the computer starts I get the boot selection list for Ubuntu or XP; but I am not allowed to select Windows XP (I cannot scroll down the list with tab or arrows keys). This would be fine for me but the computer is used by other people who are only familiar with windows XP at the moment. I have downloaded and run Boot Repair. Have search engines recognise multi-lingual sites

I have organised my site by language using the following structure: www.domain.com #spanish language version www.domain.com/en #english language version The site is of Spanish subject matter hence Spanish language takes priority at root of domain. Although the site is new at this stage I would hope visiting from google.com and google.es would return English and Spanish versions respectively. Are there any particular steps I need take to separate the two. Should I add them both as individual sites in Google's webmaster tools and also should I submit individual site maps for each 'site' or as a whole? Thanks in advance.

Configuration of LDAP client on 12.04

We have here a way to log in the computers base on Ldap(openldap). You can use any seat with the login/pass you have. Well my problem is that everything worked fine till I had to upgrade Ubuntu to the last version (12.04). Now, it is far from impossible to log in because you only can choose administrator account! That would be my issue; I want to Lightdm allow me to choose the user e.g : pagonzalez or rmlago or whatever the login-name you have. I´ve been searching for 2 days now, and nothing comes up! Hope somebody here has any idea about it!

Ideas for card deck names [closed]

I'm creating a card game, and wish to offer players to choose from different sets of playing cards. The game logic remains the same, only the design and graphics on the cards would be different. It would feature classic French set, German/Hungarian one, and a bunch of other custom designed ones. I'm looking for some cool names to give to those sets. I thought maybe to use names of some world cities like "London set", "Paris set", "Tokyo set", but there might be something better. I know this is really open-ended question, so there might not be a definitive "correct" answer, but I hope this kind of brainstorming would be useful to anyone looking for ideas to name a set of... well, anything. I'll up-vote any good idea, no matter if I don't end up using any of those.
