  • Unable to play bluray movies or see bluray discs

    I have a Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S ATA Device and when I put bluray discs into the drive the computer doesn't read them. I hear the drive make 3 noises as if it's trying to read them. Nothing shows up in windows explorer. I am running windows 7 64bit. I can read DVDs and CDs just fine. Bluray seems to be the only problem. I have installed PowerDVD9, HP DVD Play and HP DVD Media Smart and nothing helps. My laptop is a hp dv7 1273cl. I bought it before the free upgrades to windows 7 were available so I wasn't able to get the upgrade and so HP won't assist me beyond telling me to format and reinstall Vista.

  • Quick-n-Easy way to remove outdated ActiveDirectory users?

    We have around 70 current employees, but 178 accounts in ActiveDirectory. The prior administrators never removed old accounts, and sometimes they weren't even disabled. As it is, I am considering manually reviewing each account to determine if it can be removed. Is there an easier way to remove accounts based on a condition? Such as, remove (or at least disable or flag in some way) users that haven't logged in within the last month or so?

  • itunes: delete song from playlist

    I can't seem to remove a particular song from one of my playlists, but keep it in my collection. Pressing "delete" or "command+delete" doesn't seem to do anything. Option+delete asks me if I want to remove it from my music library, which is not what I want. help!

    I have 7z 4.65 and am trying to extract a single file to standard output. The 7z command-line help says -so is the command-line parameter to extract to standard output, but when I try this: >>> 7z e -so dist\dlogpkg.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF 7-Zip 4.65 Copyright (c) 1999-2009 Igor Pavlov 2009-02-03 Error: I won't write data and program's messages to same terminal how can I fix this? There doesn't seem to be a command line param to suppress the normal 7z stdout messages. (edit: the equivalent operation in "unzip" would be unzip -p dist\dlogpkg.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF which works fine. But I'd like to use 7z for various reasons.)

  • How to fix Apache from crashing with PHP+Curl on an SSH request?

    My Apache process segfaults whenever I call curl_exec() from PHP with an "https://" URL. If I use http instead of https as the URL transport, it works perfectly, so I know curl and the other curl options are correct. I can use curl from the command-line on that server using the https version of the URL and it works perfectly, so I know the remote server is responding correctly, the cert isn't expired, etc..   • Bash Script to Compress / Transfer / Remove Log Files

    I am currently using chronolog to set log file names for Apache with date. They are in the following format: /WEB/LOGS/APACHE_ACCESS_YYYY-MM-DD.log /WEB/LOGS/APACHE_ERROR_YYYY-MM-DD.log I would like to have a script that runs on the first of every month and compresses the log files from the previous month, transfers them to another host (via SCP) and then deletes the compressed file. find . -name '*.log' -mtime +1 -type f I've found several examples like the one above that allow you to select files x days old, but I need all files from the previous month. I am the first to admit my bash scripting skills are weak so would really appreciate any help and guidance.

  • How do I restart a Windows XP upgrade?

    Is there a registry tweek to tell Windows Setup to start over? It tries to continue where it left off after I reboot. I can get to the Recovery Console. I tried to go from SP2-SP3. It failed, and I couldn't get to Safe Mode. I put in the SP1 disk (I don't have an SP2 boot disk, just the upgrade package.) It ran a couple minutes then gave me the error "the signature for windows xp professional upgrade is invalid" error code 800b0100. I rebooted to Safe Mode. I get to Safe Mode then say "Window XP Setup can't run under Safe Mode" press ok to restart. I put the SP3 disk back in, trying to get the "repair" option I didn't ever see putting in the SP1 disk, and it tried to continue the SP1 install - on the 4th step, and then gave the same signature error above. I need to get it to start over, so I can get to the repair option, to go back to SP2 (or install SP1 then add SP2 to it). Is there a registry tweek to tell Windows Setup to start over?

We would like to use a DNS service to direct users to the nearest server, but can't find any. Does anyone have an recommendations for solutions.   • Is there an offline HTML editor for writers?

    All of our writers and editors use Microsoft Word for document creation and a lot of what they create ends up on the Web. Is there a good offline editor with a flavor similar to Word that they could use to create their documents. Styling of the content should not be a concern, only producing semantic HTML (most documents they create could be done using only header and paragraph tags for instance). They have tried CKEditor and TinyMCE but it is still too foreign for them and it is online so they don't trust it not to lose their work.

  • How do you set up SSL and Nginx Proxying?

    I have Nginx listening to traffic on port 80 and proxying certain request to Apache over port 8080. I am going to set up Nginx to listen to port 443 for https traffic, but my question is how should the proxying be done now? Does the proxy to Apache need to be https or has Nginx already decoded it so I can keep sending it to Apache over port 8080. BTW, Apache is running with the least amount of modules installed possible and has currently has no SSL related modules, would I need to install any?

    In emacs, whenever I want to delete a few lines of text, I just use C-k until all the text is gone. However, in vim it seems a bit more complex. I know I can do d$ to delete until the end of the line and dd to delete the entire line I'm on, but how do I delete all of the next line?

  • Here's what I want... what do I tell my IT guy I need?

    I work in the graphics department for a real estate brokerage, and we deal with a lot of photos. Agents take the photos, upload them to me, I touch up and standardize the photos, then I add them to an in-house server for future use by the graphics dept. I'd like to make the "sanitized" photo files available to the agents to use when they want, but I don't want the agents poking around the graphics department's files (things get misplaced, renamed and messed up in a hurry). What would be perfect is if we could create a read-only "mirror" (correct term?) of that server that could be accessed by the agents as needed, but which wouldn't feed back into our "sanitized" file system. What do I tell the office IT guy I need (platform-agnostically, because I don't know what he's running)? I never get to see him face-to-face, so I've got to word this as carefully and explicitly as possible. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for your feedback

  • HDD Carrier, like a soda carrier available at McDonalds?

    We use external USB drives for backups, and they have to be stored offsite at the end of the week. Right now we have your standard external USB drive inside an enclosure. We were thinking about moving to a USB dock, and dock a bare HDD for backups, rather than having various sized and types of enclosures. If we were to do this, the drives need protection while being transported to/from the safety deposit box. Is there any kind of hard drive carrier that would let us slide two drives into it, and it would provide protection while the drives are carried around by non-technical people? I'm afraid such a product doesn't exist, but perhaps someone knows of something?

  • linux hardware raid 10 / lvm / virtual machine partition alignment and filesystem optimization

    I've been reading everything I can find about partition alignment and filesystem optimization (ext4 and xfs) but still don't know enough to be confident in setting up my current configuration. My remaining confusion comes from the LVM layer and if I should use raid parameters on the filesystem in guest os'es. My main questions are: When I use 'pvcreate --dataalignment' do I use the stripe-width as calculated for a filesystem on RAID (128kB for ext4 in my situation), the Stripe size of the RAID set (256kB), something else altogether, or do I not need this? When I create ext2/3/4 or xfs filesystems in guests on the Logical Volumes, should I add the settings for the underlying RAID (e.g. mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 -E stride=64,stripe-width=128)? Does anyone see any glaring errors in my set up below? I'm running some benchmarks now but haven't done enough to start comparing results. I have four drives in RAID 10 on a 3ware 9750-4i controller (more details on the settings below) giving me a 6.0TB device at /dev/sda. Here is my partition table: Model: LSI 9750-4i DISK (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 5722024MiB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 1.00MiB 257MiB 256MiB ext4 BOOTPART boot 2 257MiB 4353MiB 4096MiB linux-swap(v1) 3 4353MiB 266497MiB 262144MiB ext4 4 266497MiB 4460801MiB 4194304MiB Partition 1 is to be the /boot partition for my xen host. I know there are other ways of handling that but this method works best for my situation.   • TempDB is Full Issue for SQL Server 2000

    Even though the log file shows that there is over 1 GB of free space, we start receiving an error message every 3 or 4 days saying that the TempDB file is full. I know cursors impact the TempDB file, but is there anything else I should be looking at to see why this keeps happening? I've tried running SQL Profiler, but when running it, it slowed down the DB so much that the users were experiencing timeouts. What specific items should I check for in SQL Profiler?

I see these days I can pick blade enclosures and servers up for relatively low cost and see the term blade and vm mentioned quite a lot. So my question - how would a blade setup work with wmware - is the whole enclosure seen as one big machine and yhr more blades you add the more computing power/resources you get in VMware - or are the just x number of seperate servers?     I need to resize the disk space of an ubuntu guest in VMWare Workstation. After using the expand disk utility in vmware workstation, I need to do some linux magic to resize the parition.   • HTTP 400 error for all websites

    A couple of days ago, I started getting HTTP 400 responses from all websites. Nothing will go across port 80. However, everything works if I connect to VPN. The weird thing is, without VPN, other things still work; such as IM and anything else that doesn’t use port 80. Pinging also works. I haven’t noticed this behavior on any other computer on my network. The kicker is, if I log on as a local admin, everything works fine!!! I haven’t installed anything in the last couple weeks and I don’t remember changing any configuration. I ran Forefront and HouseCall and neither found any problems.

  • Input not supported message when monitor is powered off then back on

    I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time). Any ideas what might cause this, only when the monitor is turned off manually?
