• Java(standard, non standard) or Non Java based Web developement [closed]

  I am new to web development. Initially i thought i would be learning LAMP or WAMP to acquire web developement skills but recently i came across Standard Java based (JSP, servlets) and Non standard Java based (GWT). My question is related to if and how LAMP can be compared with Java (standarad or non stadard) technologies. Is LAMP even comparable to Java based tech or it does something else or something more or less ? what requirement for a web developement projects require the choice that which of these 'technologies' should be choosen ?   I am learning Java and have written a few small useful programs. I am new to spring but have managed to understand the concept of dependency injection for decoupling. I'm trying to applying that in my development work in an enterprise setting. What are the 3 most important design patterns I should master (not for interview purposes but ones that I will use every day in as a good java developer)? Also what are some good java design considerations and practices in coding specifically in Java? My goal is write good decoupled and coherent programs that are easy to maintain that don't make me standout as a java rookie. Stuff like not beginning my package names with com. have already made me precariously visible in my team. But they know I have 2 years of coding experience and its not in java.

  I'd like to ask if someone of you knows the exact meaning of JEE. That's because a collegue of mine was asked this question in a job interview, and was "unable to answer properly"... to speak with his interwiewer's words. And when he told me what he said to his interviewer I got really surprised, since it was more or less what I would have answered myself - in a concise form, the first paragraph of this article. J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) is a Java platform designed for the mainframe-scale computing typical of large enterprises. Sun Microsystems (together with industry partners such as IBM) designed J2EE to simplify application development in a thin client tiered environment. J2EE simplifies application development and decreases the need for programming and programmer training by creating standardized, reusable modular components and by enabling the tier to handle many aspects of programming automatically. That seems not to be enough, since the interviewer asked for "more precise and less general definition". Is there really a more precise definition for JEE? Or did my colleague just find the fussiest-interviewer-ever? :)

• June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE Released

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice. Oracle just released the June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE.  This Critical Patch Update provides 14 new security fixes across Java SE products.  As discussed in previous blog entries, Critical Patch Updates for Java SE will, for the foreseeable future, continue to be released on a separate schedule than that of other Oracle products due to previous commitments made to Java customers.  12 of the 14 Java SE vulnerabilities fixed in this Critical Patch Update may be remotely exploitable without authentication.  6 of these vulnerabilities have a CVSS Base Score of 10.0.  In accordance with Oracle’s policies, these CVSS 10 scores represent instances where a user running a Java applet or Java Web Start application has administrator privileges (as is typical on Windows XP).  When the user does not run with administrator privileges (typical on the Solaris and Linux operating systems), the corresponding CVSS impact scores for Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability for these vulnerabilities would be "Partial" instead of "Complete", thus lowering these CVSS Base Scores to 7.5. Due to the high severity of these vulnerabilities, Oracle recommends that customers obtain and apply these security fixes as soon as possible: Developers should download the latest release at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html    Java users should download the latest release of JRE at http://java.com, and of course  Windows users can take advantage of the Java Automatic Update to get the latest release.   When restoring a database backup, by default, SQL Server places the database files in the master database file directory.  In this example, that location is in L:\MSSQL10.CHTL\MSSQL\DATA as shown by the issuance of sp_helpfile   Hence, the restored files for the database CHTL_L2_DB are in the same directory     Per SQL Server best practices, the log file should be on its own disk drive so that the database and log file can operate in a sequential manner and perform optimally. The steps to move the log file is as follows: Record the location of the database files and the transaction log files Note the future destination of the transaction log file Get exclusive access to the database Detach from the database Move the log file to the new location Attach to the database Verify new location of transaction log Record the location of the database file To view the current location of the database files, use the system stored procedure, sp_helpfile 1: use chtl_l2_db 2: go 3:   4: sp_helpfile 5: go   Note the future destination of the transaction log file The future destination of the transaction log file will be located in K:\MSSQLLog   Get exclusive access to the database To get exclusive access to the database, alter the database access to single_user.  If users are still connected to the database, remove them by using with rollback immediate option.  Note:  If you had a pane connected to the database when the it is placed into single_user mode, then you will be presented with a reconnection dialog box. 1: alter database chtl_l2_db 2: set single_user with rollback immediate 3: go Detach from the database   Now detach from the database so that we can use windows explorer to move the transaction log file 1: use master 2: go 3:   4: sp_detach_db 'chtl_l2_db' 5: go   After copying the transaction log file re-attach to the database 1: use master 2: go 3:   4: sp_attach_db 'chtl_l2_db', 5: 'L:\MSSQL10.CHTL\MSSQL\DATA\CHTL_L2_DB.MDF', 6: 'K:\MSSQLLog\CHTL_L2_DB_4.LDF', 7: 'L:\MSSQL10.CHTL\MSSQL\DATA\CHTL_L2_DB_1.NDF', 8: 'L:\MSSQL10.CHTL\MSSQL\DATA\CHTL_L2_DB_2.NDF', 9: 'L:\MSSQL10.CHTL\MSSQL\DATA\CHTL_L2_DB_3.NDF' 10: GO

• how can i disable the default console handler, while using the java logging api ?

  Hi I am trying to implement the java logging in my application. I want to use two handlers. A file handler and my own console handler. Both of my handlers work fine. My logging is send to a file and to the console . My logging is also sent to the default console handler, which i do not want. If you run my code you will see extra two line sent to the console. • Linux configurations that would affect Java memory usage?

  Hi, Background: I have a set of java background workers I start as part of my webapp. I develop locally on Ubuntu 10.10 and deploy to an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server (a media temple (ve) instance). They're both running the same JVM: Sun JVM 1.6.0_22-b04. As part of the initialization script each worker is started with explicit Xmx, Xms, and XX:MaxPermGen settings. Yet somehow locally all 10 workers use 250MB, while on the server they use more than 2.7GB. I don't know how to begin to track this down. I thought the Ubuntu (and thus, kernel) version might make a difference, but I tried an old 10.04 VM and it behaves as expected. I've noticed that the machine does not seem to ever use memory for buffer or cache (according to htop), which seems a bit strange, but perhaps normal for a server? In fact, the question now is why, if I add up the virtual memory usage on the server (3.2GB) does it more closely reflect 2.4GB of memory used (according to free), yet locally the virtual memory used adds up to a much more substantial 4.7GB but only actually uses ~250MB. • Web log analyser with daily statistics per URL

  Are there any good web server log analysis tools that can provide me with daily statistics on individual URLs? I guess I'm looking at something that can drill down into particular URLs and on particular days rather than just a monthly summary report. The following don't seem to meet my needs as they don't offer drilling down to get more detailed info: awstats analog webalizer (I'm running an nginx frontend into Apache with nginx outputting 'combined' format logfiles if it makes any difference.)

  Hi, I want to do log shipping for biztalk databases on SQL server 2008 standard edition (server A) to another SQL server 2008 standard edition (server B). I was told that for biztalk, logshipping is not like standard logshipping.   Reference manual for MySQL 5.6 states that " Some changes, however, still use the statement-based format. Examples include all DDL (data definition language) statements such as CREATE TABLE, ALTER TABLE, or DROP TABLE. " Does this statement means that even if we have ROW format for binary logs all DDLs will be logged in binary log as statement based? How does this affect replication? Kindly help me to understand this.

• OAS log files filling up hard drive

  We've had issues with log files for Oracle Application Server filling up the hard drive on our server. The files are in the /network/admin folder and are named server.log_XXXXX.trc and client.log_XXXXX.trc where XXXXX are 5 digits. The files are typically anywhere from 1-2MB in size but can be up to 100MB and thousands of them are created at a rate of about 5-10 per minute. Does anyone know how to disable these logs? Thanks!

• Windows Event Log wrong Source column value

  In the Event Viewer in Windows 7 there is a Source column that is set by my Windows Service application. The value is set to TOS and usually when a log entry is associated to my application, it has TOS as the Source column value. However, when the service fails to start (or some other kind of error occurs) I get a Source of one of the following values: Application Error Service Control Manager .NET Runtime I don't understand why the value is not always TOS Also, is it possible to force it to use TOS every time?

  I've been asked to look into log shipping for SQL Server 2000 (yes, 2000): something in my memory tells me that I looked at this years ago and there were question marks over it's reliability. I'm trying to google stuff, but given the age of 2000 now I've put pulled up anything to confirm this -- most seem to say they're using it without problem, so just want confirm whether I'm just being delusional, or whether there were problems, but with a fully patched SP4 box these don't exist any more.   Hi, I've looked everywhere for a solution to this. Is there any way to turn off this logging in VNC? VNC seems to be logging some large updates I'm doing in mysql and taking up my whole hard drive space. The only way to get rid of the log file is to reboot, which I would prefer not to have to do if possible. Cheers

  How can I implement a vtable COM interface in java? In the old days, I'd use the Microsft JVM, which had built in java-COM interop. What's the equivalent for a modern JRE? Answers to a similar SO question proposed JACOB. I've looked at JACOB, but that is based on IDispatch, and is aimed at controlling Automation serers. The COM interfaces I need are custom vtable (extend IUnknown), e.g. IPersistStream, IOleWindow, IContextMenu etc. For my use case, I could implement all the COM specifics in JNI, and have the JNI layer call corresponding interfaces in java. But I'm hoping for a less painful solution. It's for an open source project, so open source alternatives are preferred.
