  Background about myself: I have about 3 years experience working in Java/J2EE. I am currently pursuing MS in Software Engineering at a reputed university. I have done several classwork projects on Ruby on Rails and can be considered at Intermediate level expertise with ROR. I have an interview coming up next week for a Ruby on Rails developer position at a startup. I have already prepared all the basics of Ruby on Rails but didn't get a lot input on the questions asked for ROR developers. Can you guys help me with the preparation?   Hi, I need to know what can be the main reasons (apart from the basics like grouping CSS selectors, reducing image size, using image sprite etc.) which makes a website slow on Internet Explorer, because my website works fine on the others like FF, chrome etc. Is it the huge use of Javascript framework (ie. jQuery, extjs, prototype)? Is it because of the use of plugins based on JS framework? Should I use core javascript and remove the use of any js framework? Should I try to avoid using jQuery(document).ready()? in case of jQuery framework? Above some of the questions which I know and please answer the questions which I couldn't ask because of lesser knowledge about these. I need to make my website perform well on IE (6,7,8) also please suggest. Thanks

• A basic animation not showing up

  I still try different basics with android, and now I'm stuck with animation. I'm trying to implement a simple animation. I've defined animation in xml file like this: alpha android:interpolator="@android:anim/accelerate_interpolator" android:fromAlpha="0.0" android:toAlpha="1.0" duration="3000" repeatCount="infinite" In my main view group I have an ImageView defined like this: <ImageView android:id="@+id/someb" android:src="@drawable/earth_normal" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:padding="5dip"/> And this is from my starting activity class: public class Ohayou extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); ImageView earth = (ImageView)findViewById(R.id.someb); Animation earthFadeInAnimation = AnimationUtils.loadAnimation(this, R.anim.fade_in); earth.startAnimation(earthFadeInAnimation); } It finds ImageView successfuly and creates animation. but when I start emulator ImageView just shows the original src image, not an animation. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

• Best way to track impressions/clicks in a bespoke advertisement system?

  I've been asked to create a bespoke advertisement system despite suggesting open source alternatives such as OpenX and DoubleClick for Publishers (the former Google Ad Manager). I've got the basics of the system set up, i.e. uploading creatives, creating positions and a mechanism to place creatives within positions; however, the area I'm stuck with is impression and click tracking. At the moment an impression and click is stored with the creative, but this then means impressions/clicks can't be queried. For example, we can't find how many impressions were in position x between date y and date z. How would I go about storing that kind of data? My theory was store the creative ID, position ID and timestamp in a database table, but given the amount of traffic the site has this would produce a very large database very quickly. If any one could give me a pointer or two, that would be great.

  I am trying to follow this tutorial : http://developer.android.com/training/basics/firstapp/building-ui.html as I am new to android developing and this is what my "activity_main.xml" file looks like : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="horizontal"> <EditText android:id="@+id/edit_message" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="0dp" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:hint="@string/edit_message" /> <Button android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="@string/button_send" /> When I click run I get an error that says "No XML content. Please add a root view or layout to your document." and I noticed there is a new file generated called "activity_main.out.xml". What could I be doing wrong?

• Hot to log in to a website using installed twill?

  Hello, everybody!!!! I have just successfully installed TWILL on my computer with the help of one very supportive member of "StackOverflow" (you can check it out HERE) and have tried to run one of the simple examples on the twill documentation page (you can see that page HERE). Here is that example: Let's say my username on www.slash.org is lynxye and my password is mammal. When I try to enter that exanple code into my Python prompt, I can only enter the first line of the code bexcause when I click on "Enter" to start a new line, I get some error messages right away: The same happens when I try to enter this code into my terminal: I think I miss out on some basics here. Perhaps, I need to create a file that would contain that code and then run that file somehow, but I really don't know where I need to create that file and with what extensdion. Can anyone, please, help me with this?

  Hi, I am a rookie to android. I am thinking of implementing a simple calculator in android to get a hold of the basics in android. I want to display a keypad with numbers and mathematical operations and when the user presses the keys the corresponding number is displayed in edit text. I tried using gettext() and updating the contents of edit text but it shows just the contents of pressed button. Also how do I read the contents of button so as to do mathematical operations in code? • I would like to learn C++, what is the first step ?

  My actual experience comes from PHP and Delphi(Borland) and recently also from Obj-C (iPhone sdk). In the past I also used Java, Python, VB 6 and some other scripting language. I would like to learn C++ because i need a standard tool for write compiled applications with good performance but i have no idea about witch environment i have to choose (Ex: Borland, Microsoft, Eclipse+MinGW, ...). Based those parameters: Most useful more opensource project or work requests Most standard not a proprietary versions Biggest community documentation, manuals, tutorials, forums... Better IDE add-ons, highlight, debug, cross platform, autocomplete... Easy setup A simple setup, to focus on learning the basics Actually I'm on OSX but I can use a VM if needed. • How would you use version control for personal data, like a personal website?

  This is more a use-case question, but I generate static files for a personal website using txt2tags. I was thinking of maybe storing this information in a git repository. Normally I use RCS since it's simplest, and I'm only a single user. But there just seems to be a large trend of people using git/svn/cvs/etc. for personal data, and I thought this may also be a good way to at least learn some of the basics of the tool. Obviously most of the learning is done in an environment where you collaborate. So back to the question: how would you use use a version control system such as git, to manage a personal website?

  I'm trying to figure out how to allow a user to enter in a string of tags (keywords separated by spaces) in a textbox to filter a grid of results. Here are the tables: PACKETS *PacketID Name PACKETTAGS *PacketTagID PacketID TagID Tags *TagID Name Here is the basic query without the WHERE parameters: SELECT Packets.Name, Tags.Name AS Tag, PacketTags.PacketTagID FROM Packets INNER JOIN PacketTags ON Packets.PacketID = PacketTags.PacketID INNER JOIN Tags ON PacketTags.TagID = Tags.TagID I need to filter out all the Packets that don't have tags that match any of the words BUT ALSO ONLY include the Packets that have the tags entered in the string of text (spaces separate the tags when entered into the textbox) I'm starting with the basics by figuring this out in t-SQL first but ultimately I need to be able to do this in Linq-to-SQL

  I know this isn't a question about a specific snippet of code or anything, but here goes - I've been messing around with the idea of learning Python since I'm pretty bored with PHP (and web development in general), but I can't think of any projects to help me learn. I've already worked through some of Project Euler with Python, but it's getting old. I know the basics, and I want to write something more fun that will introduce me to new things in Python. Is there a cliche beginner project for Python? (for example, PHP's would be a blog or something similiar) Are there any common Python projects for newcomers, or any uncommon ones that you'd suggest? Any ideas would help.

• Excel Worksheet assignment in VB.Net doesn't compile

  I'm converting a VB6 application into VB.Net and having trouble with the basics. I start off with:- Dim xl As Excel.Application Dim xlsheet As Excel.Worksheet Dim xlwbook As Excel.Workbook xl = New Excel.Application xlwbook = xl.Workbooks.Open(my_data.file_name) xlsheet = xlwbook.Sheets(1) but the last line doesn't compile; it reports Option Strict On disallows implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet' I can make this go away by replacing the line with xlsheet = CType(xlwbook.Sheets(1), Excel.Worksheet) but that does't look like the right thing to do to me. If the assignment is correct, I would have thought the object should naturally have the correct type. So: does anyone know what the correct thing I should be doing here?

  Ok, I think this is probably an easy question but for the life of my I can't figure it out. I have created a table called ugtags and in that table I have two columns (beyond the basics), 'name' and 'link'. I am trying to allow a user to add a link to a page. Ideally they would enter the link title (name) and the url (link) and in the view it would display the title as a link to the url that was entered in the link column. I there a way to do it by simply affecting the <%= link_to h(ugtag.name) %> code?

• Flexible string handling in Visual Studio 2008 C++

  I'm slowly starting to get the hang of the _T stuff in Visual Studio 2008 c++, but a few things still elude me. I can see the benefit of the flexibility, but if I can't get the basics soon, I think I'll go back to the standard way of doing this - much less confusing. The idea with the code below is that it scans the parameters for -d and then stores the text that follows that in the string variable fileDir. It also ignores any other parameters. • Learning to work with audio in C++

  My degree was in audio engineering, but I'm fairly new to programming. I'd like to learn how to work with audio in a programming environment, partly so I can learn C++ better through interesting projects. First off, is C++ the right language for this? Is there any reason I shouldn't be using it? I've heard of Soundfile and some other libraries - what would you recommend? Finally, does anyone know of any good tutorials in this subject? I've learnt the basics of DSP - I just want to program it! EDIT: I use Windows. I'd like to play about with real-time stuff, a bit like Max/MSP but with more control.

  I'm learning from Google's Android developing tutorial and i came across a problem. On this link https://developer.android.com/training/basics/network-ops/connecting.html#AsyncTask it says to create a class that extends AsyncTask. So when i write the class it automatically implements the method as follows: private Object doInBackground(Object... args) {..} //it's fine but when i try writing just as it says in the tutorial: private String doInBackground(String... args) {..} //it gives an error and the error says: The method doInBackground(String...) of type MainActivity.DownloadWebpageText must override a superclass method. So how do i change Object to String without getting an error there?

• using jQuery .live with .bind

  okay, I understand the basics of jQuery, and I know that in some instances I've had to use .live('click',function(){...}); instead of .click(function(){...}); to get the method to fire correctly. the method I'm currently looking at is: $('#title').bind('keyup', function(){...}); This works great, except because it's in a bit of code that isn't called until another action is preformed, I'd need to use .live() as described above. Problem is, I don't know how to format this one to work using the .live() method instead of .bind() as shown above. Can someone please help? Thanks in advance!

  Just diving into pylons here, and am trying to get my head around the basics of SQLALchemy. I have figured out how to load a record by id: user_q = session.query(model.User) user = user_q.get(user_id) But how do I query by a specific field (i.e. username)? I assume there is a quick way to do it with the model rather than hand-building the query. I think it has something with the add_column() function on the query object, but I can't quite figure out how to use it. • Passing a pointer to an array to glGenBuffers

  I'm currently passing an array to a function, then attempting to use glGenBuffers with the array that is passed to the function. I can't figure out a way to get glGenBuffers to work with the array that I've passed. I have a decent grasp of the basics of pointers, but this is beyond me. This is basically how the render code works.   I'm trying to send messages to a window that says Ctrl and Up-arrow has been pressed. I've got the basics down, I can send presses of the space key that registeres fine.   I am looking for TDD resources that are specific to Rails. I've seen the Rails Guide: The Basics of Creating a Rails Plugin which really spurred my interest in the topic. I have the Agile Development with Rails book and I see there's some testing-related information there. However, it seems like the author takes you through the steps of building the app, then adds testing afterward. This isn't really Test Driven Development. Ideally, I'd like a book on this, but a collection of other tutorials or articles would be great if such a book doesn't exist. Things I'd like to learn: Primary goal: Best Practices Unit testing How to utilize Fixtures Possibly using existing development data in place of fixtures What's the community standard here? Writing tests for plugins Testing with session data User is logged in User can access URL /foo/bar Testing success of sending email Thanks for any help!
