  • Full-time programmer or software development consultant?

    - by DV
In your opinion and experience, what's best - working full-time and long-term for one company, or part-time short-term on many smaller projects or parts of projects? What do you think are the pros and cons of both? I heard that being a consultant is more profitable and one would pick up more experience. Does that beat an 8 hours by 5 days (thanks to Jon Limjap for correction :)) job of coding in a cubicle?

  • What language is .NET Framework written in?

    - by chester89
The question I always wanted to ask and was afraid to, actually - what language is .NET Framework written in? I mean library itself. It seems to me that it was C and C++ mostly. (I hope Jon Skeet is reading this one, it`ll be very interesting to hear what he thinks about it)

  • C#, why does Convert.ToBoolean("0") fail?

    - by JL
I know that trying to convert string "0" to boolean will fail, I also know how to fix this, thanks to Jon Skeets answers on other questions. What I would like to know is WHY does C# not recognise "0" as a valid input for a boolean conversion, surely you could look at it like 0 = false, 1 = true, or even -1 = false and 0 = true, anyways, my logic tells me that it could be a valid input, so is there a very good reason why its not? My bet is old vb6 would be able to recognize the string input "0" as valid.

  • You Might Be a SharePoint Professional If&hellip;

    - by Mark Rackley
I really think no explanation is needed. Hope this makes you smile.. Thanks again for being an awesome SharePoint community! If you can only dream about working an 8 hour day, there’s a good chance you are a SharePoint professional. You might be a SharePoint professional if the last time you heard “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” you wondered “How many web front ends does it have?” If you consider Twitter the best form of support since the dawn of the Internet, you might be a SharePoint professional. If you are giddy-as-a-school-girl excited about going to Anaheim in October and it has NOTHING to do with Disneyland, you might be a SharePoint professional. You might be a SharePoint professional if you own more SharePoint shirts than you do pairs of underwear. If you’ve thought of giving up a career in the IT world for a job taking orders at a fast food chain, you might be a SharePoint professional. You might be a SharePoint professional if the only people who understand the words that come out of your mouth are other SharePoint people. If you put the word “Share” or “SP” in front of EVERYTHING (ShareFood, SPRunner, etc… etc…) then you might be a SharePoint professional. You are probably a SharePoint professional if you love SharePoint.. you hate SharePoint… you love SharePoint… you hate SharePoint… If the only thing you’d rather do more than SharePoint is SharePint, then you are definitely a SharePoint professional. You might be a SharePoint professional if your idea of name dropping is “Andrew Connell says…” or “According to Todd Klindt”… or even “Well, when I was stuck in a Turkish prison with Joel Oleson…”

It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America.  I always love my time here.  First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather).   I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event.  It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome.  The night life is hoppin’.  In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people  Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together.  I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton.  I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community. • box2d tween what am I missing

    - by philipp
I have a Box2D project and I want to tween an kinematic body from position A, to position B. The tween function, got it from this blog: function easeInOut(t , b, c, d ){ if ( ( t /= d / 2 ) < 1){ return c/2 * t * t * t * t + b; } return -c/2 * ( (t -= 2 ) * t * t * t - 2 ) + b; } where t is the current value, b the start, c the end and d the total amount of frames (in my case). I am using the method introduced by this lesson of todd's b2d tutorials to move the body by setting its linear Velocity so here is relevant update code of the sprite: if( moveData.current == moveData.total ){ this._body.SetLinearVelocity( new b2Vec2() ); return; } var t = easeNone( moveData.current, 0, 1, moveData.total ); var step = moveData.length / moveData.total * t; var dir = moveData.direction.Copy(); //this is the line that I think might be corrected dir.Multiply( t * moveData.length * fps /moveData.total ) ; var bodyPosition = this._body.GetWorldCenter(); var idealPosition = bodyPosition.Copy(); idealPosition.Add( dir ); idealPosition.Subtract( bodyPosition.Copy() ); moveData.current++; this._body.SetLinearVelocity( idealPosition ); moveData is an Object that holds the global values of the tween, namely: current frame (int), total frames (int), the length of the total distance to travel (float) the direction vector (targetposition - bodyposition) (b2Vec2) and the start of the tween (bodyposition) (b2Vec2) Goal is to tween the body based on a fixed amount of frames: in moveData.total frames. The value of t is always between 0 and 1 and the only thing that is not working correctly is the resulting distance the body travels. I need to calculate the multiplier for the direction vector. What am I missing to make it work?? Greetings philipp

  • Trying to learn how to use WCF services in a WPF app, using MVVM

    - by Rod
We're working on a major re-write of a legacy VB6 app, into a WPF app. I've written several WCF services, which are meant to be used with the new WPF app. We want to use the MVVM design pattern to do this, but we don't have experience at that. So, in order to learn MVVM we've watched a video on WindowsClient called How Do I: Build Data-driven WPF Application using the MVVM pattern. This is a great introduction, and we refer to it a lot, but for our situation it doesn't quite give us enough. For example, we're not certain how to use datasets returned by my WCF services in our new WPF app using the ideas that Todd Miranda introduced in the video I referenced. If we did as we think we're supposed to do, then we should design a class that is exactly like the class of data returned in my WCF service. But we're wondering, why do that, when the WCF service already has such a class? And yet, the class in the WPF app has to at least implement the INotifyPropertyChanged interface. So, we're not sure what to do.

  • A Virtual Seat at the Architect&rsquo;s Table

    - by Bob Rhubart
I always have fun producing the Arch2Arch podcasts, but the latest batch was all that and a bag of chips, since I was required to do absolutely no preparation and very little talking, and since the conversation was reminiscent of those I’ve had with various architects (you know who you are) in various watering holes: free-ranging, extemporaneous, and far, far from dull. The three most recent programs were recorded during a virtual mini meet-up of architects back in February.  You’ll find more detail here, but in a nutshell, I invited several previous Arch2Arch panelists to join me on Skype to talk about whatever was on their minds.  The resulting conversation yielded the three latest programs. Check them out – it’s like you’re sitting at the table. Listen to Part 1 Listen to Part 2 Listen to Part 3 The conversation begins with the participant’s responses to my challenge to fill in the blank in the sentence “Most conversations about Enterprise Architecture are too ____.” From there the conversation morphed into a discussion of the sheer joy of finding funding for architecture projects. The architects seated at the virtual table in these programs are:  Todd Biske, a veteran enterprise architect and the author of the book SOA Governace, from Packt Publishing. ( LinkedIn | Twitter | Blog | Oracle Mix ) Jordan Braunstein, an Oracle ACE Director and the Business Integration and Architecture Partner at TUSC. (Blog | Twitter | LinkedIn | Oracle Mix) Basheer Khan,  also an Oracle ACE Director, and the founder and CEO of Innowave Technology (Blog | LinkedIn | Twitter | Oracle Mix) Pat Shepherd, an enterprise architect with the Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group. (Oracle Mix | LinkedIn | Blog) Coming Soon I was so pleased with the results of this meet-up format that I did the same thing for the next series of programs.  These free-ranging conversations feature a different group of participants, covering a different set topics, including the fear of SOA, the misunderstanding and misinformation behind that fear, and the idea of beauty in architecture. Yeah, you read that right. So stay tuned: RSS   Technorati Tags: oracle, otn, enterprise architecture, podcast. arch2arch,meet-up del.icio.us Tags: oracle, otn, enterprise architecture, podcast. arch2arch,meet-up

  • Why does Mac OS X ignore my Windows NTFS and Share permissions?

    - by Michael
Mac OS X Snow Leopard Windows Server 2003 Windows Folder "Videos" Share Permissions on Videos - Everyone NTFS Permissions on Videos - System (Full Control) - Domain Users (Modify) - Domain Admins (Full Control) Mac user Michael is a part of the Domain Users group. He connects to Videos using cifs://server/Videos and authenticates with his username Michael. Michael copies over a file "dance dance baby.avi". User Jon opens the Videos folder but cannot see the dance dance baby.avi file. Checking the dance dance baby.avi file permissions here is what I see: Everyone - Read, Write Domain Admins - Full Control Michael - Read, Write Owner of File - Michael So here's my question, how come when Michael copies a file over from a Mac, the permissions on the file get changed even though Michael has no rights to change permissions? If the same file is copied over from a Windows machine, it just inherits the proper permissions from the parent Video folder. Am I missing something? Are my permissions wrong? Thanks. Michael

  • Apache, modifying response codes from 404 to 301

    - by user72539
Hi, I'm running a magento installation on an apache server. There are many pages indexed in both google and linked to from external sites. I can't use 301 redirects in a .htaccess file as I can't be sure I will catch all the links. At the moment all requests are rewritten through magento and if a request isn't found magento returns a 404 File not Found. Is there a way of using one of the apache modules to filter the response* from magento and if a 404 Not Found is being sent back then replace the response with a standard 301 Redirect to the home page? E.g. Request to Magento -- Apache -- Rewrite to Magento index.php page -- page processed. Response if request exists -- return results (200) if request doesn't exist -- return 404 -- apache filter change response -- return 301 redirect to / I appreciate any help. Thanks, Jon as far as I am aware mod_rewrite is only used to rewrite requests and doesn't allow the modification of responses.

  • How to connect to IIS and SQL Server Express on Windows 7 host from XP Mode

    - by SpatialBridge
Hello, I am running IIS and SQL Server 2008 Express on my Windows 7 host, and I'd like to be able to connect to them in XP Mode. My host machine is not a part of a domain, only a workgroup. So far, I've tried these instructions on connecting to SQL Server, but I'm not able to telnet to port 1433 on the host from XP Mode. I'm also not able to connect using a SQL client. I'm not able to connect to IIS on the host from XP Mode. Advice from those who have had success doing this would be appreciated. Thanks, Jon.

  • Checking version of Applications installed in ~/Applications with unknown username

    - by ridogi
I'd like to check the version of Firefox through Apple Remote Desktop of all managed computers. I have written this, but it only checks for Firefox in /Applications /bin/cat /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Info.plist | grep -A 1 CFBundleShortVersionString | grep string | sed 's/[/]//' | sed 's/<string>//g' For standard users Firefox auto update breaks if it is in /Applications so I instead have it installed in ~/Applications I'd like to check that copy (if it exists), but I can't specify the path in the command since it is unique to each computer. For example: /Users/jon/Applications/Firefox.app /Users/arya/Applications/Firefox.app Presumably I want to use find and pipe the result to my command. This should work for 10.6 through 10.8

  • 500 Metro Style WP7 Icons

    - by Bil Simser
I was inspired by The Noun Project, a project that offers up “Metro-style” icons in SVG format. The project is licensed under a public domain license and while it’s a great project, all of the content is in SVG format. Jon Galloway has a great post (from 2007) talking about the differences between SVG and XAML so I highly recommend that for some background. I thought it would be helpful to the WPF/Windows Phone 7/Silverlight community to provide the content in alternative formats for use in your applications. The Goods I’ve put together a package of the 500 icons (502 actually) in PNG, XAML and the original SVG format along with a couple of sample projects so you can see them in action. There’s a WPF desktop app: And a Windows Phone 7 app: Building It To get all the content first I wrote up a quick program to suck the original SVG files. Luckily they’re all in a common path just named 1.SVG, 2.SVG, and so on. Easy sleazy to grab the contents. Once I had 500 SVG files I used the latest copy of XamlTune, an open source CodePlex project that has a command line conversion tool to convert the directory of SVG files into XAML (the tool also created a PNG file of each SVG so that’s just icing on the cake). Conversions The conversion from SVG to XAML isn’t 100%. While you can just drop the content into a WPF app, it doesn’t work that way for WP7. There are just some small adjustments I made to each format so you’ll have to do the same. Follow the information below or refer to the sample applications. As a sample, here’s an icon we want to use: Here’s the original SVG file: <svg version="1.0" id="Layer_1" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" x="0px" y="0px" width="100px" height="94.616px" viewBox="0 0 100 94.616" enable-background="new 0 0 100 94.616" xml:space="preserve"> <path d="M25.076,15.639c4.324,0.009,7.824-3.488,7.82-7.82C32.9,3.512,29.4,0.012,25.076,0c-4.313,0.012-7.814,3.512-7.821,7.819 C17.262,12.15,20.763,15.648,25.076,15.639L25.076,15.639z"/> <path d="M4.593,43.388h6.861l4.137-15.135h1.716L13.22,43.388h24.318l-4.389-15.135h1.817l2.32,7.415 c1.08,3.131,3.852,3.851,6.003,1.162l8.375-10.142c2.651-3.42-2.104-7.021-4.844-4.035l-4.993,5.952 c0.007,0.095-0.96-3.278-0.96-3.278c-1.135-3.978-4.918-7.903-10.595-7.922H19.576c-5.071,0.019-9.043,4.434-9.888,7.214 L4.593,43.388L4.593,43.388z"/> <polygon points="56.206,22.753 56.206,7.163 49.192,7.163 49.192,22.753 56.206,22.753 "/> <path d="M79.87,15.738c4.332-0.014,7.831-3.516,7.82-7.82c0.011-4.332-3.488-7.833-7.82-7.82c-4.306-0.013-7.806,3.488-7.821,7.82 C72.064,12.222,75.564,15.725,79.87,15.738L79.87,15.738z"/> <path d="M89.759,89.556v-43.19h5.751V22.804c0.007-3.079-2.757-5.448-6.71-5.449H70.436c-3.65,0.001-4.539,1.186-5.551,2.168 L49.597,37.889c-3.098,3.848,2.428,8.333,5.55,4.743L69.88,25.226v64.43c-0.019,6.475,9.06,6.686,9.081,0.201v-36.58h1.765v36.379 C80.748,96.109,89.772,96.13,89.759,89.556L89.759,89.556z"/> <polygon points="100,54.035 100,45.155 0,45.155 0,54.035 100,54.035 "/> </svg> Here’s the XAML that XamlTune created. Note that while it does show up in the app (on the emulator or device) it wouldn’t show up in Visual Studio for me. Maybe some XAML guru out there can tell me why. You can just as easily use the PNG files in WP7 but if you want the crispness of vector graphics, go for the XAML version. Of course with XamlTune being open source you could always modify the output of that program to cater it to your app. If you do make a change that’s worthy please consider submitting a patch to the project so everyone can benefit. Hope this helps and happy programming! • Adattárház Fórum 2010. május 11.

    - by Fekete Zoltán
Holnap, kedden az Adattárház Fórum 2010 rendezvényen egy érdekes eloadásban fog beszélni Jon Mead, a Rittman Mead Consulting egyik alapítója arról, hogyan használja az egyik vezeto egy brit kiskereskedelmi cég az Oracle Exadata / Database Machine rendszert az adattárházának sikeres, nagy teljesítményu muködösének. Az adattárház alapja, az Oracle Database tehát az Exadata platformon fut: Using Exadata in the Retail Sector: a Case Study. Ez az eloadás 15:10-kor kezdodik. 10:10-kor kezdodik a Szállítói kerekasztal, amin jómagam is részt veszek az Oracle oldaláról. Amirol beszélni fogok: Hogyan látja az Oracle az adattárházak fejlodését, és hogyan látja a világ az Oracle-t. 12:00-tól Fisher Erik, Sun fog érdekes eloadást tartani: Amit a hardverekrol mindig tudni szerettél volna címmel az adattárházakhoz használható hardverekrol. Itt is ki fog térni az Exadata / Database Machine megoldásban alkalmazott Smart Flash Cache alapját képezo Flash kártyákra is és a "hagyományos" :) tranzakciós, DW és más rendszerekben használható SSD diszkekre is. 10:20-kor a CERN eloadása kerül reflektorfénybe: From Tera Electronvolts to Terabytes - Physics Databases at CERN címmel. A CERN mindig is extrém felhasználója volt a technológiának, a határokat feszegetve és ezeket innovatív megoldásokkal kezelve.

  • Inside Sweden’s Nuclear Bunker Turned Data Center

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
A data center inside a decommissioned nuclear bunker is interesting enough, but one that looks as futuristic and awesome as the center under Stockholm begs to be seen. A hundred feet under the city of Stockholm is a decommissioned nuclear bunker that the government had previously leased out intermittently for various events, but it was never put to serious or extended use. Not until, that is,  Jon Karlung discovered the location and brought his vision of an ultra-modern, stylish, and secure data center to life. The passage from Wired’s write up of their photo tour that best encapsulates the feel of the bunker is: Most often data centers are built in boxy warehouses, so Bahnhof stands out as perhaps the world’s most stylish. In fact, it inspired Cisco IT Architect Douglas Alger to write a book on the world’s best-looking data centers. ”The idea that people were sitting in a design meeting and said, ‘what we need for our data center is waterfalls,’ that must have been a very fascinating discussion,” Alger says. Hit up the link below for the full photo tour. Deep Inside the James Bond Villain Lair That Actually Exists [Wired] Why Does 64-Bit Windows Need a Separate “Program Files (x86)” Folder?
