  • What usb-bootable utility should I use to copy SATA hard drives?

    I have a computer that only has two SATA connections and I need to copy one SATA hard drive to another. Since I have to unplug the CD drive to copy the drives I need a USB-bootable utility. I have an old school copy of Norton Ghost (CD based): Ghost has always worked well for me in the past - I see there is a new "version 15" out but I'm not sure if it is worth buying. A friend has Acronis True Image on a USB drive: We tried to use that on the computer but it was unable to copy both partitions (restore partition and main partition). Of course there may be some problem with the drive that is keeping Acronis from working (it is just exiting with a lame error about not being able to copy the disks and no error code or detailed information), but I'm interested in knowing if there is a better, more solid, or widely used solution that I should invest in. What usb-bootable utilities can I use to copy SATA hard drives?

    When playing a BluRay movie on a PC (any OS, Mac/Win/Linux), I have some questions about audio output: When playing a BluRay disc on the PC using a BluRay player program, can it decode the multichannel (7.1) LPCM/ Dolby Digital Plus / Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD / DTS-HDMA soundtracks in their HD formats (ie, without downmixing to Dolby Digital or DTS or PCM) and output the audio directly to the soundcard's 7.1 line-level analog outputs? Is it possible to bitstream the the multichannel (7.1) LPCM/ Dolby Digital Plus / Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD / DTS-HDMA soundtracks in their HD formats (ie, without downmixing to Dolby Digital or DTS or PCM) over the HDMI output to a receiver when using a BluRay player program? I'd kinda like to know. I'm contemplating building a home theater PC, and the above functionality is important. I'd prefer that #1 is possible, actually, because it would mean I wouldn't have to buy a receiver.

Here are the features I am looking for : at least 500Go HDD capable of playing HD (1080p) supporting a good range of video and audio codecs support for subtitles including a DVB-T input (coax) and tuner composite video input 5.1 (or 7.1) analog audio output LAN (100M or Gigabit) fileserver (SMB or NFS) remote control possibly digital output (S/PDIF, TOSLINK, or other) no need for integrated DVD player no need for wifi The Ultio Pro looks nice (http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/home-entertainment/d3fe). It just lacks a DVB-T input which is a show killer for me. Thanks for your suggestions.

    Hi, i installed fms in my server, and already its running a apache for hp, so want to run this fms as a separate port in 8083 While installing i gave port number as 8083,and now its shows in "fms.ini" ADAPTOR.HOSTPORT = 1935,8083 I think it should listen any of these ports, but its not working while am acessing domain.com:8083 domain.com:1935 Please can some body tell me why its not working Thanks in advance

    I have seen many ways to make a USB an installer for about any Windows OS. But how can I (using grub or something like that) make it bootable to all editions on Windows XP and 7? I have tried Googling it and researching, I've even tried to do it, But I dont understand much about GRUB or linux at all.   • F3-F5 keys incorrectly behaving as audio keys

    I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem. Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

    Downloaded Windows 7 .iso off the net and want to install from USB key on old laptop (previously/still running XP) that has no CD/DVD drive. Here's what I've got so far: Read the instructions in this post: http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345 , which were quite straight forward and clear. Properly formatted USB key with another laptop (this one running vista), also with no DVD drive wasn't sure how to make the USB bootable, since my .iso was downloaded and I have no DVD drive. Any help would be much appreciated!!

  • Cannot boot from USB on my Mac mini

    Two weeks ago I installed OSX 10.8 on my Mac mini. After that, my system started to hang a lot, so I tried to erase it and install OSX 10.7 again. I used carbon Copy Cloner to make the bootable USB and it can load successfully on another Macbook. However, on my Mac mini, when I press on the option button to select the USB, it loads the white screen with a ban symbol at the center of the screen. After a moment, my machine automatically shuts down. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Edit: this is exactly the problem I have now http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1207168.html Update 1: the hdd seems ok (from disk utility). I restored the booting partition by disk utility (drag the dmg file to that partition). After restarting and using that partition to boot, prohibited symbol is still there

  • Sound does not work on the administrator profile.Works on a non-administrator profile on Windows XP

    Initially I suspected a missing driver, but then sound ( for movies,songs etc ) works fine on the other non-administrator account, but does not work when I log in to the Administrator account. And yes..I have checked the sound volume and mute status as well.   • Formatted a Bootcamped drive as a dynamic disk, now can't boot to either Mac or Windows

    I was trying to create an extra partition to get a file from the Windows side of my Macbook Air to the Mac side, and I accidentally made the disk dynamic without realizing it. I am now unable to boot to the Mac side (holding Alt to go into the system manager at startup doesn't even list the Mac partition), and the Windows side blue screens during boot (goes so quickly that it doesn't even get to the error code before restarting). What can I do to fix the issue? I don't know how to make a bootable flash drive that a Mac will recognize, and Disk Utility (via Internet Recovery) couldn't do anything.   • Win7 MCE seems unable to play ripped DVDs

    I'm running Windows 7 and am using mymovies.dk to rip the dvds to my harddrive. However, playback isn't watchable as the picture is very stuttery and blocky, only shots that show the same image for a few seconds get shown properly. The dvd's are ripped as the straight folder structure and if played in XBMC are fine. I've tried installing both the cccp-project.net and latest div-x codecs, but that doesn't seem to have helped. I'd like to stick with MCE as it has a high WAF (wife acceptance factor). Any suggestions?

    I am looking to create a USB flash drive that I can put multiple LiveCD iso's on and select which boots from startup. The ideal candidate supports linux and windows based iso's, and is relatively simple. It also must have some reasonable process for adding and removing iso from the drive/list. Things that I'm not looking for this specific question: UBCD or other swiss-army knife livecd's. The point is to boot any one of multiple CD's, not to boot a (certainly useful) utility CD. Installing a single LiveCD to a USB drive. I'd like to have multiple iso images, selectable at startup. I don't have a specific purpose in mind, possibilties include a single drive with a knoppix variant, ubuntu desktop, UBCD for dos, UBCD4Win, the Offline NT Password Cracker, etc. Flexible and easy to use are the name of the game!

  • Why are FMS logs filled with 'play' event status code 408 for a failed webcast?

    Recently we had a live webcast event go horribly wrong. I'm doing the technical post-mortem, with limited information. We know that the hardware encoder (a Digital Rapid Touch Stream Web HDI) was unable to send upstream at a sustained reliable high rate. What we don't know is if the encoder's connection was problematic (Zürich), or that of the streaming server (in Frankfurt). Unfortunately, I've got three different vendors all blaming each other (the CDN who runs the server, the on-site ISP and the on-site encoding team.) In the FMS log files I see a couple of interesting things: Zillions of Status Code 408 on play event entries for clients. Adobe's documentation stats that this "Stream stopped because client disconnected". ("Zillions" would be a ratio of 10 events for every individual IP address.) Several unpublish / (re)publish events per hour for the encoder I'd like to know if all those 408s could tell me with authority that the FMS server was starved for bandwidth, or that the encoding signal was starved (and hence the server was disconnecting clients.) Any clues?

I have an ISO on the cd I thought that will work. The manual says I need DOS system files, where do I get these from? Thanks
