  I started my Career as core-Java developer 6 years ago and stayed as developer for 6-7 month and then moved to performance testing (actualy pushed into this for short term and later I started liking it). I have done all sort of non-functional testing like performance, load, stress, soak, compatibility, failover etc on many performance test tools accross many industries. I was doing contracting all these years which means I kept moving to new projects after every 3-6 months. Now personal situation has been changed, married man now so looking for something long term. Performance testing generally comes at the end of the development life cycle hence very short term contracts so I was wondering if I can move into functional/test automation side I can earn myself good length of contract. I had some exposure of QTP but I am sure to learn all other tools very quickly as I am quite good in programming and concept of testing. in short I want to move into functional test automation to get long term contract without leaving my love for programming . any thoughts please ?

• VPN server on Windows Server 2008 for a small office

  I'm going to refurbish the IT-infrastructure for a small organization with one single office, and I'm not sure what VPN server to use. In your opinion, would the built-in Windows Server 2008 VPN server suffice or are there any specific problems with it as opposed to, for example, OpenVPN? I'd rather run a Windows native VPN server, but if there are few (preferably free) good alternatives, I could install VMware ESXi and virtualize both Windows and an OpenVPN-server. By the way, because of a low budget this office runs a solution with only one physical server. Any advice would be great to help me grasp this field of which I'm quite a novice. Thank you!

  I wonder how one professional developer would design the backend-part of his application. I try to use PHP as seldom as possible and only for data serving/saving purposes. To do so, i would create a module/class for every greater part of my application, then write some single script files which are called by javascript. E.g: User clicks a "retrieve data" button javascript will call retrieveData.php retrieveData.php will create an instance of the needed class, then executes myInstance-retrieve() the data is returned to my JS by retrieveData.php However, i see some disadvantages in this practice: I will need a single scipt file for every action, (e.g retrieveData.php, saveData.php etc) I need a man-in-the-middle step: from JS to my single script, to my classes How are modern applications designed to accomplish what i need to do?

• Is NTFS-3G safe for writing?

  These days, I have to use the NTFS-3G driver to write to an NTFS drive (which will later be used in Windows). But I still remember the olde times of Linux ntfs driver which clearly said in the docs: 'If you write to an ntfs volume, run our special program afterwards which will clean up the damage done.' So, I read through the man, the docs, the Tuxera site and Askubuntu and found no discussion of the write-safety of NTFS-3G. The only thing that was mentioned somewhere is that the driver doesn't support the NTFS journal. So, the question is, can I use NTFS-3G and be sure that I will later read what I have written to the files? Won't, for example, Windows find the journal entries missing and 'clean up' the data according to its own faulty understanding?

• Computer not booting, black screen, no beeps

  I bought a pre-owned computer on Ebay. It booted fine, had to reset due to it not detecting USB mouse, but it detected the USB keyboard. Booted fine again, then I tried to install Ubuntu Desktop, when it was installing I got a phone call, when I'm answering it, I find a Blue screen of Death. I reboot the computer and nothing, no BIOS boot, no beeping, but one of the fans was on. I opened the cover and found a large amount of dust, removed it, still not booting. I'm a complete novice with computer repairs, the most advanced thing I did was take a 286 harddrive and replace a 486's damaged harddrive with it (put the drive into the 486 that is), what could possibly be causing this?

  I'm running a server with Munin installed through WHM cPanel. I've been googling around and I can't seem to find out how to do the following: A: Change a graph to show a different time period (currently I can only view, day, week, month, year). I would like to possibly view per minute, per hour... or specific intervals such as per 30 minutes, per 4 hours, etc... B(optional, but preferred): Add new graphs with the above criteria(A) above. I am a novice with all things that will possibly be required to do this (such as ssh). I wish I could just go edit a php file as I'm highly experienced in that subject. Thanks for any help!

  Hi, an upstart question (I think I have read all relevant man pages but could not find the answer there): What is the sense of using a "stop on ..." stanza in the definition of a job which is a task? The manuals tell us that such a job, after being started, just waits until its script (or exec stanza) is executed completely, and then stops automatically. Given that, what is the point in using "stop on ..." stanzas in such job definitions?   I do a lot of file manipulation on my system and in one particular batch job I end up with around 16 Gb file. I need to prepare this data into smaller chunks for another process. I split it into 10k lines per file and numeric index, padded to 5 digits split -a 5 -d -l 10000 large_input_file /out_path/out. This way I end up with files named out.00000 out.00001 ... The problem is that this way indexing always starts with 0. Is there a way to set it to arbitrary starting index? man reveals nothing ...

  I'm having trouble finding concrete, up-to-date information for how to set up strongswan or openswan to be used by the iphone's VPN client. My server is behind a budget linksys NAT router. I found this, but it mentions a whole bunch of .pem files with no reference for how to create them. Unfortunately, the "fine" manuals for both packages were quite inscrutable and unfriendly to a novice. I've set up OpenVPN before and managed to get serviceable results very quickly, but after a day and a half of reading out of date docs, I barely even know where to start.   I would like to specify what you asked about in how iceweasel misses on in hopes that you are interested in considering the answer to be valid considering the package should run efficient to a novice user especially when getting a first impression on a new software, browser, or package they are given by default. First let me say that I am very grateful for all debian has and continues to do for its user base and I am not complaining, only hoping that in mentioning such it will eventually aid in improving the disappointing experience iceweasel gave me in multiple ways right from the start of using it. I am sure tremendous amounts of hard work went into making it work as well as it does, and tremendous effort continues to go into IW like the rest of the package and distros such as this... Having said that, I do aim to keep my examples simple as possible but also explained in enough detail as to not leave out important info to get a full idea of my issue... (Thanks for understanding if I sound novice to debian, I am but continue to learn and advance by trial and error each day, and of course the wonderful help from all the great minds available here and there)... Well, my bone to pick (unfortunately as I disdain being a complainer when so much has been done for us, the end user) with IW is mainly 3 immediately noticed problems in offering me a smooth test drive (completely normal browsing conduct of your average user, I should indicate) as soon as I started out a task using IW (heading directly to google images and searched for a few web sized images, then saved a few (no more than 800 to 900 in dimensions, typically a normal procedure I would imagine) I experienced a horrendous reoccurring freeze and lag time that almost left me to kill the process more than once on each attempt and continued to compound so that by a few attempts later, even 1 single image save locked up the entire browser, ultimately giving up on my procedure in its simplicity with a bit of aggravation, if there was something I had done wrong on my end pre-attempt or during installation. Secondly, visiting video player sites in this case youtube will not allow for any video feed to play whatsoever and again, experienced a slight freezing that eventually dissipated as long as I didn't attempt to press play or reload another video trial... Very annoying and possibly related to my first issue (which could rely on my own lack of knowledge in setup config, but that troubles me if so).... Lastly as another user has stated already, in which brought you to ask them what exactly seemed to be the problem in the first place is also my final straw that broke the weasel's back, leading me here to find a solution to a updated version of firefox... being that iceweasel (an apparent build of firefox 17.x.x) leaving the user to find themselves out of luck when installing their favorite or much useful add-ons or plugins that aid their task or normal usage online.... As the other user clearly stated... there is almost zero options and barely any luck to find compatible plugins with such an outdated version still being used... I can only imagine if as a novoice or standard user to linux... and beginner to debian (which I am all for btw!) if I am discovering major conductivity issues which hinder normal user conduct right off the bat... that there is probably a bundle or more of security vulnerabilities that would unravel to me if I continued to give mr Hommey's package any further attention, or interest in continuing to use... This is a deal breaker on any account, unless all 3 of these issues stated are due to a very n00berish setting or lack thereof (which if that is the case, such was not properly stated for beginner in any place available by following installation tutorials such as LVM installers, which I felt lacked a clear understanding to someone who is trying to learn why and how, rather than, a fix to a potentially broken out of box installation... I really think that is irrelevant in any case however, as there is much step by step support regarding that kind of thing, just saying... its very challenging, along side a job to keep deadlines on, and the need to learn a better and more costomizible system, that was not as popularized when I became a dev via windows (OK OK I know thats a huge mistake and now I am way off original topic but anyway) Thanks very much for taking the time to read over this, and I hope it honestly gives you a few good and valid reasons for users wanting and seeking a way to get around iceweasel altogether... Finally, if I am missing something vital that renders all I've stated invalid or useless, please feel free to shove that elephant in the room my direction! • Not your typical Permission Denied Question

  I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10 (64 Bit) on my computer. (My hard drive took a powder) Before, I could "mv" files around with the command. Now when I try I get the permission denied message. I also get the message about "man sudo" when I open my terminal. I am pretty sure I did not get that before. Can I add a user/administrator and change something in my orginal admin that I cannot change myself? I am getting really frustrated with this. I do not recall having the same problem before. I tried qksudo nautilus and it appears to run then it sits there with the cursor blinking but does not move.

  I am interested in studying algorithms and my strong points are problem-solving and logical thinking. However what I am guided toward is web-developing languages, SQL and they seem to not exploit the best out of me. I think it's because lots of people can learn these things easily, even steal ideas and copy code. Is that wrong? I was told that "learning algorithms is just for optimization, so you just need to know it (not a deep understanding)", but I think algorithms are my savior; it differentiates one man's abilities from others'.   So let's say that I've finished programming a simple, indie MMO game similiar to Tibia. I've got a stable server application that is ready to launch, i've got a tested bug-free working client application that is ready to play and the game's official website (ready to host) with payment system and client that is ready to download for free. Let's say none of them break copyright laws, and no matter how impossible it sounds, let's for now say it's true. My game divides accounts into two groups - free and premium. If someone gets premium, he's granted access to all possible game features, that of course, need server authorisation to work properly. Let's say that the "premium account" can be bought on the website for a fixed money/month. Free accounts mean that everyone can actually play, but without paying, you get limited access. This is what the mentioned payment system will be for. Well, I'm completely novice to these business entities issues, so in short: what, in terms of law, are steps from here to the state where my game earns money in a fully legal way ? Also, is there for example, something like verification if game gives the user what it actually offers when paying on its website ? I live in Europe, if it changes something.

  As a man interested in programming, I must ask if there is a cataloged hierarchy of languages. I'd like to learn to actually understand what's happening- that is to say, I don't want to use a compiler until I understand what a compiler does and how to make my own. I really do want to start from total scratch. I'm told that means "machine code"? I don't know. What I do know is that "C++" is not the start. I'm not interested in learning that until I can actually break software down to its very base and see how the pieces go together.

• How to pause and resume a game in XNA using the same key?

  I'm attempting to implement a really simple game state system, this is my first game - trying to make a Tetris clone. I'd consider myself a novice programmer at best. I've been testing it out by drawing different textures to the screen depending on the current state. The 'Not Playing' state seems to work fine, I press Space and it changes to 'Playing', but when I press 'P' to pause or resume the game nothing happens. I tried checking current and previous keyboard states thinking it was happening to fast for me to see, but again nothing seemed to happen. If I change either the pause or resume, so they're both different, it works as intended. I'm clearly missing something obvious, or completely lacking some know-how in regards to how update and/or the keyboard states work. • Open a remote folder in windows mobile

Both are connected to the same wireless network, both have access to internet but I can't have access between them... I have used open path in the file explorer and nothing... • Incrementing ticket numbers each time I print

  I have an excel sheet where I have a set 4 identical tickets to print per page which we use for stock takes. Rather then creating a huge document with 1000 pages for 4000 tickets each with their own unique ticket number (starting from 1) I would like to find a Macro or function which will print a page with 4 tickets on (1,2,3,4) then continue to print another with (5,6,7,8) and so on. I have found some code that people have already written but it has only applied to one number changing per page rather than 4 simultaneously and being a complete visual basic novice, I was unable to change the code to suit my preferences. If someone could explain simply how I could achieve this I would be very very grateful :)
