    I delivered a session today that describes what's new in Office 2010 for solution developers. It's a session that I have evolved over the past year. My core demos have also evolved, and I'm pleased with the impact they make. The session was well attended, and I was pleased to see plenty of enthusiasm for Microsoft Office solutions from the good folks in the Netherlands.   • Should HTTP Verbs Be Used Semantically?

    If I'm making a web application which integrates with a server-side backend, would it be considered best practice to use HTTP methods semantically? That is, for example, if I'm fetching data (e.g., to populate a menu, etc.), I would use GET, but to update data (e.g., save a record), I would use POST. (I realise there are other methods that may be even more appropriate, but we need to consider browser support.) I can see the benefits of this in the sense that it's effectively a RESTful API, but at a slightly increased development cost. In my previous projects, I've POST'd everything: Is it worth switching to a RESTful mindset simply for the sake of best practice?

With so much attention being given to COLUMNSTORE and in-memory tables and stored procedures, it is easy to overlook how important tempdb is to performance. Speeding up tempdb I/O improves performance. The best way to do this is to not do the I/O in the first place. With SQL Server 2014, tempdb page management is smarter.   • How to push through a domain transfer in spite of the 60 day rule

    I recently purchased a domain through a registrar which I won't name here. Within the first five minutes of logging in, I found a severe vulnerability that allows me access to all registration details of all users. Simply put, I do not trust this registrar with any kind of business. But I'm unable to transfer the domain because, for some reason, it has to exist in its current state for 60 days. We're planning to launch the site this weekend - we can't wait 60 days. But I can not trust this registrar: if I found such a severe vulnerability in the first few minutes, how many more similar un-trustables will I find in those 60 days? Is there a higher authority to whom I can submit a case to get my domain transferred to a different registrar?

    I've decided that it's time for me to move on from Geeks with Blogs.  It's been a great platform but unforuntately I've not used it nearly as much as I should.  It's been over a year and a half since my last post.  It's not that I haven't had worthwhile stuff to post, it's more due to a lack of motivation.  Knowing how I work, I think part of the problem with me using GWB is that it's free.  If I don't use it, I don't feel like I'm wasting anything.  With that in mind, I've decided to move to a paid host in hopes that drives me to post more frequently.  My new blog is located at the following address:http://thirteendaysaweek.comIn the coming days and weeks I'll be working on moving my content to the new site and will leave posts here that redirect to the new site.

  • Programers first day at work [closed]

    Next week I am getting my first job as a programmer in a well known company. I have worked in other companies before, but mostly in IT department. As you can understand, I am very determined to succeed in there. I have found some related articles in the Web, but I am not even sure they are written from developers. So I am asking you, to tell us about what will you do in another way if you could "reverse" the time, and what can I do to succeed. Of course "work hard" is one of them but what about book/article reading, certifications, good practises to make good impression to my team leader or whatever else you think would help? I know that it maybe fit better at wordplace.stackexchange.com, but this is a programmer oriented post and can only be answered by experienced programmers. Thank you.

I am still working on this but not getting proper guidance. This site is caching 2 times in 24Hrs. Some times sites will back in to top 10 search listing on 100s keywords, some time its gone out 1000+. anybody can help me why its happening.     Let's say you have a resource that you can do normal PUT/POST/GET operations on. It represents a BLOB of data and the methods retrieve representations of the data, be they metadata about the BLOB or the BLOB itself. The resource is something that can be processed by the server on request. In this instance a file that can be parsed multiple times. How do I initiate that processing? It's a bit RPC like.     Edit: I am not asking how to program embedded systems. I am asking how it is done in a practical business setting. I have searched for hours for information on what software developers actually do. More specifically, what coding challenges would one experience daily (e.g. code examples (although obviously not too large), specifics)? I am interested in Linux based embedded systems mainly, but any software development would be helpful (in the C/C++/Assembly areas). Also, regarding this, a distinction between junior, intermediate and senior developers would be helpful.     I'm looking at how I can change the representation of a payload at runtime for varied potential advantages, but I'm not sure how to do it. Specifically collections. Array of Pairs [{ <resource_uri> : { <entity> }, ...}] Array of Objects [<entity>,...] Array of Resources [<resource_uri>] Map of entities { <resource_uri> : { <entity> }, ... } My problem is, I'm not sure if I should put these different representations of the sets at different URI's, give them slightly varied mime types, e.g. application/foomap+json or perhaps use an optional query parameter ?format=map, or resource /entities/map. The UI is going to hide this, this is for programmatic web service access only (which the "UI's JS will have to call).

  • Is is OK to use a non-primary key as the id in a rails resource?

    I am getting ready to set up a resource for some new api calls to my rails application. I am planning on calling the resource devices ie resources :devices This is going to represent a android mobile devices I know this will get me routes such as GET devices/:id In most cases :id would be an integer representing the primary key, and in the controller we would use :id as such: GET devices/1 @device = Device.find(params[:id]) In this case I would like to use :id as the google_cloud_messaging_reg_id So I would like to have requests like this: GET devices/some_long_gcm_id and then in the controller , just us params[:id] to look up the device by the gcm registration id. This seem more natural, since the device will know it's gcm id rather than it's rails integer id. Are there any reasons I should avoid doing this?
