• How much overhead does a msg_send call incur?

  I'm attempting to piece together and run a list of tasks put together by a user. These task lists can be hundreds or thousand of items long. From what I know, the easiest and most obvious way would be to build an array and then iterate through them: NSArray *arrayOfTasks = .... init and fill with thousands of tasks for (id *eachTask in arrayOfTasks) { if ( eachTask && [eachTask respondsToSelector:@selector(execute)] ) [eachTask execute]; } For a desktop, this may be no problem, but for an iphone or ipad, this may be a problem. Is this a good way to go about it, or is there a faster way to accomplish the same thing? The reason why I'm asking about how much overhead a msg_send occurs is that I could also do a straight C implementation as well. For example, I could put together a linked list and use a block to handle the next task. Will I gain anything from that or is it really more trouble than its worth?

  I have all my views in a project inheriting from a ViewBase class that inherits from UserControl.   I have a Rakefile that includes this: Jeweler::Tasks.new do |gem| # ... gem.add_dependency('json') end The gemspec that this generates builds a gem that can't be installed on jruby because the 'json' gem is native. For jruby, this would have to be: Jeweler::Tasks.new do |gem| # ... gem.add_dependency('json-jruby') end How do I conditionally add the dependency for 'json-jruby' when RUBY_ENGINE == 'java'? It seems like my only option is to manually edit the gemspec file that jeweler generates to add the RUBY_ENGINE check. But I'd rather avoid this, since it kind of defeats the purpose of using jeweler in the first place. Any ideas?

• Tricks to avoid losing motivation?

  Motivation is a tricky thing to upkeep. Once I thought that ambitious projects will keep programmer motivated, and too simple tasks will hinder his motivation. Now I have plenty of experience with small and large projects, desktop/web/database programming, c++/c#/java/php languages, oop/non-oop paradigms, day-job/free-time programming.. but I still can't answer the question of motivation. Which programming tasks I like, and which don't? It seems to depend on too many variables. One thing remains constant though. It's that starting everything from scratch is always more motivating than extending some existing system. Unfortunately it's hard to use this trick in productive programming. :) So my question is, what tricks programmer can use to stay motivated? For example should we use pen and paper as much as possible, in order not to get fed up with monitor and keyboard?

  Hello. I have a list of urls (content type usage url's). Now, content types are deployed across web's. I need to loop those content types and do some actions in each list, but opening new SPWeb instance every loop is too resource intensive. Is there built-in method to tell me if this URL belongs to certain SPWeb object? Example: SPWeb's may be http://server/web1 http://server/web2 http://server/web2/subweb1 http://server/web2/subweb2 With content type usage links like: /web2/Pages /web2/Lists/Tasks /web2/Lists/Documents /web2/subweb1/Lists/Tasks ... As you can see, for first 3 usages i don't need to open up new SPWeb

  Just installed TFS 2008. Created a project with portal site. When I create a bug in TFS from Visual Studio I'd like to see that bug in the web portal. And the other way around. When I add a task in the web portal I'd like to see that in Visual Studio. It's as if the web portal is not connected to TFS. I'm using the MSF for Agile Software Development template. I just saw Team System Web Access. That's what I want in addition to the other pages Sharepoint portal provides. For example the Wiki page and calendar view. So one place to see all tasks lists and assign task and see other project related pages. Maybe be able to has the tasks due dates come up on the calendar. Many thanks

  SwingWorker is used for the following purposes: For running long-running tasks in a different thread so as to prevent the GUI from being unresponsive For updating GUI with the results produced by the long-running task at the end of the task through done() method. For updating GUI from time to time with the intermediate results produced and published by the task with the help of publish() and process() methods. SwingUtilities.invokeLater() can perform the above tasks as follows: Instead of executing SwingWorker.execute() method from the EDT, we can execute ExecutorService.submit(new MyRunnable()) as it will also create another thread which can execute long-running task. For updating GUI at the end of the task, we can put code (written in done() method of case1) SwingUtilites.invokeLater(new RunnableToExecuteDoneMethodCode()) at the end of the task. For updating GUI in the middle of the task, we can put code (written in process() method of case1) SwingUtilites.invokeLater(new RunnableToExecuteProcessMethodCode()) at the place where we called publish() method in case1. • How to stop worker threads in a multithreaded Windows service on service stop

  I have a Windows service that uses the producer/consumer queue model with multiple worker threads processing tasks off a queue. These tasks can be very long running, in the order of many minutes if not hours, and do not involve loops. My question is about the best way to handle the service stop to gracefully end processing on these worker threads. I have read in another SO question that using thread.Abort() is a sign of bad design, but it seems that the service OnStop() method is only given a limited amount of time to finish before the service is terminated. I can do sufficient clean-up in the catch for ThreadAbortException (there is no danger of inconsistent state) so calling thread.Abort() on the worker threads seems OK to me. Is it? What are the alternatives?

  I have made the following webpage for generating interactive todo lists: http://robert-kent.com/todo/todo.php Basically, the user pastes a numbered todo list and each task is placed into it's own div with a unique id. Users can add notes to the tasks (done with javascript) and can click the green check when the task is done to hide it. I'd like to add an Export button which would generate a report of which tasks were completed and which were not, along with the user-entered notes. After a bit of searching I understand that what I want to do is scrape the page, but I haven't the faintest idea of the best way to do it. Many of the articles and tutorials I have found with Google involve scraping other sites and don't really explain how I could iterate over each div on the page. • SSIS DTSX File Repair Tool

  I'm working with an SSIS 2005 file that crashes Visual Studio 2005 on my workstation. This happens when I open the data flow diagram and Visual Studio attempts to validate the package. I can open it successfully on another computer though. The package itself is fairly simple and only has two control flow tasks and maybe ten tasks in the data flow. I'm wondering if there is a tool that goes through the XML in the dtsx file and repairs any issues or if this is even necessary. The dtsx file is about 171 kB and it seems like there's a lot in it considering what a simple package it is.

  How do I update different columns and rows across a table? I want to do something similiar to replace a string in SQL server I want to do this but the value exists in multiple columns of the same type. The values are foreign keys varchars to an employee table. Each column represents a task, so the same employee may be assigned to several tasks in a record and those tasks will vary between records.   Hello, I recently started with Magento and decided to migrate Interspire shopping cart I already made time ago to it. At first look Magento seems a very huge beast - lots of options, maybe lack of simplicity resulting in some performance loss. I've got user guide from which I am not getting much of benefit since there're just descriptions of very ordinary tasks that I could easily discover myself by poking around frontend/backend. So my first tasks are category and product export. Interspire seems to be exporting ONLY products in three available formats: Default MYOB Peachtree accounting I did some searching on Magento's product importing and found a blog post which says that I should create a few sample products with all the necessary attributes myself and then start the import. But what should I do with categories ? Is it possible to import them or instruct Magento to automatically create categories when importing product file if unknown category is encountered ? Thanks

• How to access SharePoint files and folders from outside SharePoint?

  I need to programatically interface with SharePoint folders, files and lists from outside SharePoint. Most tutorials focus on working within SharePoint itself, or at least on the same server where SharePoint is installed. I need to automate some tasks from completely different servers -- tasks that require reading SharePoint lists, browsing folders, checking files out and in, reading files stored in SharePoint libraries, etc. It used to be easy using UNC folder and file paths. Now many of our SharePoint sites don't allow UNC access (probably for good reasons), but my needs are the same. What languages / libraries / interfaces will allow this? I'd like to be able to do this from server-side .NET code and from PowerShell scripts (not on the SharePoint server). Thanks for any pointers.

There is an exception that one task (Default) has set to lower priority then the other task in rtos. So that if no task is running, the default or lower priority task runs.   I am running array jobs with Sun Grid Engine (SGE). My carefully scripted array job workers generate no stdout and no stderr when they function properly. Unfortunately, SGE insists on creating an empty stdout and stderr file for each run. Sun's manual states: STDOUT and STDERR of array job tasks will be written into dif- ferent files with the default location .['e'|'o']'.' In order to change this default, the -e and -o options (see above) can be used together with the pseudo-environment-vari- ables $HOME, $USER, $JOB_ID, $JOB_NAME, $HOSTNAME, and $SGE_TASK_ID. Note, that you can use the output redirection to divert the out- put of all tasks into the same file, but the result of this is undefined. I would like to have the output files suppressed if they are empty. Is there any way to do this?

  Hi! I can't find any other post which addresses this topic on a purely general level. I'm very unexperienced in developing full scale websites. I get around using HTML and PHP for simple tasks. Now I'm looking at developing a more elaborate site and want to get hold of a good tool which doesn't eat my wallet to the bones. I guess I should add more intelligent text here about what I expect it to be capable of, but I really don't know so much. I guess the code/design/preview style in dreamweaver appealed to me, and I'm definetely going to use scripting like PHP or ASP.NET, some database work etc. I guess pretty much the standard (?) website development tasks. So, are there good tools out there I should be looking at?
