  • Need suggetion on installing windows server on windows 7 laptop

    I recently bought one laptop with windows 7 for software development. unfortunately windows 7 home basic comes with limited version of IIS which is not sufficient for development. I would like to have windows server 2008 R2 for server development. i don't want to format windows 7 and install windows sever as i got win 7 with laptop. Could any one please suggest me the best possible option of having windows server 2008 on my laptop without formatting windows 7. Any solution should not void warranty of my laptop. Regards, Kumar.

    I have a Solaris on a AMD- uname -a gives OS Solaris 10 x86_64 (SunOS goldtpus34 5.10 Generic_144489-11 I wanted to find whether it has a 32bit or 64 bit kernel so I did /usr/bin/isainfo -k it says amd64 but when i do file /sbin/init it says ELF 32-bit LSB executable 80386 Version 1, dynamically linked, stripped Also if I do file it says ELF 64-bit LSB executable AMD64 Version 1 [SSE2 SSE FXSR FPU], dynamically linked, not stripped So is it possible to have a Kernel working in 64bit mode but System utils/process spawner(init) in 32bit mode. I am confused. How to accurately get if the OS Kernel is in 64/32 bit mode on Solaris and on Linux?

  • How can I tell if a KB or newer has been installed for Windows?

    I have a Windows system that I need to audit. The requirements is that (for example) KB2160329 has been installed onto the system. I know from lots of digging that KB2731847 that we have installed in the environment superseded the earlier KB. MSkbfiles.com works if you know the file name such as TCPIP.SYS. Doesn't do anything if you are just looking for KB Hotfixes. How can I say feed in a script that I'm looking for KB2160329 and it can check for superseded patches? Or is there a website somewhere that I'm missing? [Edited 7 May 2014 8:54am CST] I'm looking for a way to say that KB2731847 which is on the system does fix the same issue (plus more fixes) as KB2160329 which is not in the list as being installed on the system.

  • dual boot preinstalled windows 8 laptop with windows 7

    I am having a hard disk in gpt partition style and Windows 8 is pre-installed in uefi mode. While trying to dual boot using usb bootable disk(using rufus,gpt partition style,fat32),it displays "Windows is loading files", then while displaying "Starting Windows" it hangs. So, I tried to install it inside Windows using setup.exe. Everything was running fine, but when it gets self restarted again, it got stuck at "Starting Windows". When restarted in Windows 8, it showed a htm file stating that "Windows cannot be installed on a computer using battery power. If the battery runs out of power during the installation, you might lose data. To continue the installation, plug in the computer's power adapter." I am sure that power adapter is connected. I Googled a lot on this, but I didn't get solution.

    I have 3 ZyXEL Homeplug AV powerline adapters as per the one in the review below.     I have a network enviroment where my windows 2000 server is just acting as fileserver for sharing, so all the users has an account there with username, password and a list of access rights. Now i want to keep this server cause i am running from there an application that 20 users access but also i want to add a new Windows 2008 R2 64 bit server as a domain controller. Is this possible ? 1-It is ok to make the new windows 2008 server a domain controller ? 2- I want all the users accounts to be the same in the domain controller so they can still use the same username and password to login into the domain as well into the windows 2000 server that is setup as a Workgroup. 3- Do i need to do something to the windows 2000 sever to still be functional in the environment so it can be accessed by the clients computers? note:My clients computers are windows 2000 pro, xp pro and windows 7 32/64 bit.     I'm unable to access a Windows 7 (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) shared folder from an old Windows 98 box: I tried with: Turning on file and printer sharing Turning on public folder sharing Turning off password protected sharing Sharing the folder with read permissions to Everyone Lowering the encryption to 40-56 bits. The shared folder works fine using it from Windows XP, and even from Linux with CIFS / Samba, but when I try to use it from Win98 with: NET USE X: \\SERVER\SHARE an user / password dialog pops up. I entered the administrator's user / password from my Windows 7 box, but it doesn't work (incorrect password). The same Win98 machine works fine accessing a Windows XP shared folder, so it looks like a Windows 7 networking issue. Any ideas?

  • Best LXDE based distro/distro that supports LXDE?

    Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed... I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. So, any good recommendations? I am fairly used to Ubuntu and the dpkg/apt commands, but am willing to learn. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs). Anyway as you can see I have a strong Lubuntu bias, but there are issues like: LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc) 64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit. Thank you so much

    I upgraded a 64 bit Windows 7 laptop to Windows 8 through the Upgrade Assistant, creating a bootable USB without any problems. I installed it successfully. Before I purchased an upgrade for my 32 bit Windows 7 laptop, I decided to boot from the USB with the 64 bit ISO to see what happened. The Windows 8 install screen came up with all the options. Should it not have detected that the laptop is 32 bit and therefore the install should have given an error? I cancelled the install before it did anything, but now I want to know if I need to download the iso again after purchasing the upgrade on my 32 bit laptop? I've read the answers to this question, which confirms what is said in this article - a 32 or 64 bit iso will be downloaded depending on the hardware of the computer you are upgrading. If that is the case, then why did it boot into the install screen?

  • radvd won't accept non-/64 subnets

    I'm trying to set up radvd on a 6RD configuration (on Linux), where I have a /64 subnet, and I'm trying to use it on two distinct physical networks, so I'm trying to give each of them a /80 subnet. However, when I start radvd on these interfaces, it says this: radvd[3987]: prefix length should be 64 for int (int being the name of one of the interfaces.) I know that stateless autoconfiguration doesn't work on subnets that are larger than /64, like a /48 subnet, but AFAIK it's supposed to work on anything that is smaller than /64, so /80 shouldn't be a problem. The final effect, now, is that radvd simply advertises the wrong subnet prefix, effectively "removing" the first 16 bits of it. What is this? Am I all wrong on that, is radvd buggy, or is there some configuration option that I'm missing?

  • Crop, Edit, and Print Photos in Windows 7 Media Center

    Windows Media Center is a nice application for managing and displaying your personal photos, but you may occasionally need to make some basic edits to your pictures. Today we’ll take a look at how to crop, edit, and print photos right from Windows 7 Media Center. From within the Picture Library in Windows Media Center, choose a photo to work with, right-click and select Picture Details. You can also access this option with a Media Center remote by clicking the “i” button. Note: You’ll notice you have the option to rotate the picture from this menu. It is also available on the next screen.  Rotate a picture Now you’ll see more options on the Picture Details screen. From here you can rotate, Print, or Touch Up, Delete, or Burn a CD/DVD. To rotate the picture, simple select Rotate. Note: If you want your photo saved with the new orientation, you’ll need to select Save from the Touch Up screen that we will look at later in the article.   Each click will rotate the picture 90 degrees clockwise. You’ll see the new orientation of the picture displayed on the Picture Details screen after you have clicked Rotate. Print a picture From the Picture Details screen, select Print. Click Print again. Media Center automatically prints to your default printer, so make sure your desired target printer is set as default. Crop and Edit Photos To edit or crop your photo, select Touch Up. Touch Up options includes, Crop, Contrast, and Red Eye removal. First, we’ll select the Crop button to crop our photo.   You will see a cropping area overlay appear on your photo. Select one of the buttons below to adjust the location, size, and orientation of the area to be cropped. When you’re happy with your selection, click Save. You’ll be prompted to confirm your save. Click Yes to permanently save your edits. You can also apply Contrast or Red Eye adjustments to your photos. There aren’t any advanced settings for these options. You merely toggle the Contrast or Red Eye on or off by selecting the option. Be sure to click Save before exiting to if you’ve made any changes you wish to permanently apply to the photos. This includes rotating the images. While this method is not likely to be replace your favorite image editing software, it does give you the ability to make basic edits and print photos directly from Windows Media Center. With a Media Center remote, you can even do all your edits from the comfort of your recliner.   • Beginner Geek: Scan a Document or Picture in Windows 7

    There may come a time when you want to digitize your priceless old pictures, or need to scan a receipts and documents for your company. Today we look at how to scan a picture or document in Windows 7. Scanning Your Document In this example we’re using an HP PSC 1500 All-In-One printer connected to a Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit system. Different scanners will vary, however the process is essentially the same. The scanning process has changed a bit since the XP days. To scan a document in Windows 7, place the document or picture in the scanner, click on Start, and go to Devices and Printers.   When the Devices and Printers window opens, find your scanning device and double-click on it to get the manufacturers Printer Actions menu. For our HP PSC 1500 we have a few different options like printing, device setup, and scanner actions. Here we’ll click on the Scan a document or photo hyperlink. The New Scan window opens and from here you can adjust the quality of the scanned image and choose the output file type. Then click the Preview button to get an idea of what the image will look like.   If you’re not happy with the preview, then you can go back and make any adjustments to the quality of the document or photo. Once everything looks good, click on the Scan button. The scanning process will start. The amount of time it takes will depend on your scanner type, and the quality of the settings you choose. The higher the quality…the more time it will take. You will have the option to tag the picture if you want to… Now you can view your scanned document or photo inside Windows Photo Viewer. If you’re happy with the look of the document, you can send it off in an email, put it on an network drive, FTP it… whatever you need to do with it. Another method is to place the document of photo you wish to scan in the scanner, open up Devices and Printers, then right-click on the scanning device and select Start Scan from the context menu. This should bypass the manufacturer screen and go directly into the New Scan window, where you can start the scan process. From the Context Menu you can also choose Scan Properties. This will allow you to test the scanner if you’re having problems with it and change some of its settings. Or you can choose Scan Profiles which allows you to use pre-selected settings, create your own, or set one as the default. Although scanning documents and photos isn’t a common occurrence as it was a few years ago, Windows 7 still includes the feature. When you need to scan a document or photo in Windows 7, this should get you started.   • Installation experiences with NDepend under Win7/64 with restricted user permissions

    Today Patrick gives me a new license for his static code analysis tool NDepend for my fresh machine with Win7/64. This platform is new for me, so some things are different to Win XP. Maybe that till yet some of these things are not well enough understandanded from me. So i stepped in some traps. Here are my notes to get NDepend running. Download of NDepend Professional Edition from http://www.ndepend.com/NDependDownload.aspx   Extracted to c:\program files (x86)\NDepend   Started NDepend.Install.VisualStudioAddin.exe this failed with Okay – sounds plausible.   Copy NDependProLicense.xml to this folder   Next try with NDepend.Install.VisualStudioAddin.exe opens the integration dialog   Registering in Visual Studio failed with   Manually unblock as described (first solution hint)   and here comes my largest understanding problem. After unblocking this file   and closing this dialog the next opening shows the blocking again: Why? So the same error during integration pops up.   Okay – tried the second solution hint with copying folders Copy all to a full accessable folder under c:\temp\   Now the installation works   looks good   copying the folders back to c:\program files (x86)\NDepend   starting Visual Studio failed with     Okay – copying the folder to a private application folder c:\users\apf\My Applications\NDepend   Installing again   Now Visual Studio runs and NDepend is integrated Nevertheless my machine is only used by me, i prefer “all user”-installations. The described way works sadly only for my account.

    I am trying to install Java SDK for windows 7 (Ultimate version, 64bit), I downloaded the following file from oracle website: jdk-7u9-windowsx64.exe. When I try to execute it, I get an error that it is not a valid win 32 application. I think the JDK version is correct. Can somebody help me out?     Hello, I'm a .NET developer and recently learning WINDOWS API. When ever a program starts, my Kaspersky anti-virus says "application belonging to trusted group is trying to set debug previleges". I started wondering what are debug privileges? When ever application tries to open a file (using OpenFileDialog) it gives this message about debug privileges. It sometimes also says the so & so application is trying to read desktop.ini I'm not sure about what exactly it is either. Any way, my concern is about user previlages. When creating user account. We can only set the account to be either Administrative or Limited user.
