• Splitting a sitemap by content type

  I currently am tasked with submitting our website sitemap to the search engines every week. We have a module which does offer sitemap generation but we find using it does not work very well as not all pages are included and it does not split the sitemap by content. I've used various (online and offline) tools to generate the sitemaps which is not the problem. The problem is that after every generation (which takes most of each Monday) I have to manually go through the sitemap and categorise the links in to products, pages, categories and sub categories. I've experimented successfully with XSL to split the sitemap but it is still a labour intensive process. Does anyone know of a good method to split the sitemap? Currently there are around 20,000 links (iirc) in total.

  I have been working on my personal website for sometime, I think I have been doing a good technical job, but, unfortunately I did a terrible job while structuring the website because I didn't care about the keywords I was going to use. Although it is my personal website, I'd like to mention the main objective is the blog of the website, so I'd like that the keywords were related to the content that it is in the blog, at present google webmaster tools is displaying a lot of keywords that has nothing to do with the content of the website, and some SEO reporting websites such as woorank says that the keyword optimization of the website is awful, So I have 3 questions: How to choose, set and use keywords while structuring a website? OPTIONAL: which are all the methods and sources used by search engines to collect the keywords of a website? there are some high profile websites that aren't optimized on this as well, should I concerned about this anyway?, is there anything more important that I should be concerned about? • help redirecting IP address

  Google has indexed the IP address of my site rather than the domain, so now I'm trying to set up a 301 redirect that will redirect the IP address and all subsequent pages to the domain. I currently have something like this in my .htaccess file (however don't think it's working correctly?): RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^12.34.567.890 RewriteRule (.*) (domain address)/$1 [R=301,L] I've used various redirect checker tools and keep getting the message: "... not redirecting to any URL or the redirect is NOT SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY" Am I doing something wrong or is there something else I should be trying? • Best gui toolkit to use for creating 3D board game

  I have created a board game using Java and Swing - using GridLayout and various other apis. It works properly but the UI looks very very simple. I would want couple of animations like tilting the GridLayoutat any angle. There are pawns on boxes of the GridLayout that I want to be animated when somebody clicks on it. I'm not sure of the right GUI toolkit to use for this. Swing repaint is possible to a limit and cannot be used for a lot of animation and graphics. And I realized after creating the game that Swing is probably not a good tool to create games. Could anybody suggest a better framework to use that I can use it in Eclipse with Java? I was thinking of JavaFX or tools like Adobe Flash or Adobe Air. Any suggestions please?

  I was wondering if there is a Application where you can organize networks. I mean if you have installed some networks you have to note every pc's name, his ip-address and so on. Is there a Application where you can manage it? I saw the monitoring tools but that is not exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I didnt explain me well, after all my englis his not so good :) For example if I install many different networks I write in a book how I configured them. I write pc-name ip-address ip-gateway ip-broadcast and so on for each network. It will be great if I can do it in a program to organize it well, and for example it gives me a node view of the network.

• SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site? • Auto convert odt to pdf

  I am creating a few documents in Libre office and I have to always send them as .pdf. but each and every time I forget to export it as pdf , So is there any way to auto convert the .odt document into pdf every time I save the document ? I have only about 4 docs , I keep making changes on them , So each and every time I make a change and save the odt I need that change to be updated in the corresponding pdf file . Ps : I understand that unoconv can be used to convert via command line but is there a way to automatically do it ? Another Ps : I found out that there is something called inotify and inotify-tools and that can be used to trigger events when a file changes . But I have no idea on how to use it .

• Strategies for removing register_globals from a file

  I have a file (or rather, a list of about 100 files) in my website's repository that is still requiring the use of register_globals and other nastiness (like custom error reporting, etc) because the code is so bad, throws notices, and is 100% procedural with few subroutines. We want to move to PHP 5.4 (and eventually 5.5) this year, but can't until we can port these files over, clean them up, etc. The average file length is about 1000 lines. I've already cleaned up a few of the low-hanging fruit, however the job took almost an entire day for 2 300-500 line files. I am in a quagmire here (giggity). Anyway, has anyone else dealt with this in the past? Are there any strategies besides tracing backwards through the code? Most static analysis tools don't look at code outside of functions - are there any that will look at the procedural code and help find at least some of the problems?

I've spent a lot of time reading about, and tinkering with Liferay but am concerned that it doesn't cover two of my three major concerns I need to have many sites with individual domains HTML/CSS designers need to be able to design the website templates, look and feel, and layouts in their own tools without having to worry about writing scripts Site and page building APIs must be understandable so that a custom builder interface can be created and harness the CMS as opposed to hacking it Liferay nails the first bullet point, but the second two appear to be unsolved. Does anyone have experience with a Java CMS that does all three? Or have any idea how to approach the problem if none exists? Has someone has used a Java CMS and has been able to add this functionality give some insight?

• Is premature optimization really the root of all evil?

  A colleague of mine today committed a class called ThreadLocalFormat, which basically moved instances of Java Format classes into a thread local, since they are not thread safe and "relatively expensive" to create. I wrote a quick test and calculated that I could create 200,000 instances a second, asked him was he creating that many, to which he answered "nowhere near that many". He's a great programmer and everyone on the team is highly skilled so we have no problem understanding the resulting code, but it was clearly a case of optimizing where there is no real need. He backed the code out at my request. What do you think? Is this a case of "premature optimization" and how bad is it really?

• What is Perl's relation to hackers? [closed]

  I know Perl is a language revered by many hackers (as in hacker vs cracker) and respected by many good programmers for its expressiveness. I also realize it is useful to know and it's very handy at generalizing common Unix tasks (Unix here includes Linux and Cygwin). I also know that being a good hacker probably means you're a good programmer in general (references on this one are sparse around the web, but about everything Paul Graham has ever written seems approving of this statement to me). So my question is whether there is a reason that attracts hackers to Perl in particular? Will learing Perl improve my general programming, problem-solving and hacking skills if done properly? Does it present unique tools that are more useful to a hacker?

  AFAIK, there are 2 ways to make search engines aware of a sitemap's location: Include an absolute link to it in robots.txt Submit it to them directly. The relevant URLs are: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=SITEMAP_URL http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?sitemap=SITEMAP_URL Where SITEMAP_URL is the absolute URL of the sitemap. Currently, I do both. Regarding (2), I have a job that runs automatically every day which submits the sitemap to Bing and Google. I don't think there's any reason to do (1) and (2), but I'm paranoid, so I do. I imagine you can avoid both (1) and (2) if you just make your sitemap accessible at a conventional URL (like robots.txt). What's the simplest and most reliable way to ensure that search engines can find your sitemap?

  I am running a network of websites with notes, homeworks, essays, etc. where users share their own content. I'm having real trouble with the latest Google updates (penguin, panda, etc) because the content is mainly poor-quality and with the same topic. For that reason, I want to create more websites and have more probabilites to appear in the SERPs. My question is: does Google analyzes related websites in order to exclude it from the results? By that, they mean Don't limit your programming thinking only to the concepts that are supported automatically by your language. The best programmers think of what they want to do, and then they assess how to accomplish their objectives with the programming tools at their disposal. (chapter 34.4) Doesn't this lead to using one style of programming in every language out there, regardless of the particular strengths and weaknesses of the language at hand? Or, to put the question in a more answerable format: Would you propose that one should try to encode one's problem as neatly as possible with the particulars of one's language, or should you rather search the most elegant solution overall, even if that means that you need to implement possibly awkward constructs that do not exist natively in one's language?

• How relevant is PHP today for browser games?

  I was the lead developer of 2 moderately successful browser games quite a few years back, and plan on working on a new game soon. At the time, I wrote them in pure PHP (no template engine or anything of the sort). I'd like to start working on a new game, but have been out of the web development world for a while. Reading around, I hear a lot of good about Rails, Django, Node.js, etc., with which I have no experience (although I know my way around Python, Javascript, and the others quite well). So my question is the following- if I were to go in my old ways and go with PHP again, would I be making things hard for myself? Would picking something more "trendy" have a real impact on my development? In addition, does anyone have any pointers relating to specifically developing browser games with these more modern tools?

• Right-click acts too fast - No Fix Yet, Any Workaround?

  When I click the right mouse button (anywhere, be it - desktop, browser, console, etc.), the right-click context menu pops up so quickly that the very *first* option in the menu gets clicked. This happens too often to take it easy. This issue has been brought up a couple of times on Ask Ubuntu, but with no fix whatsoever. This is a very low priority issue for the Ubuntu team, I believe? (How could they?!) Is there at least a workaround for the issue? Ubuntu is almost unusable for me as it is now. PS: I have a new mouse. So, please don't go about suggesting that I get a new one - - everything's working fine on Windows 7, so should be the case with ubuntu 11.10, which it is not.
