• Enabling/disabling proftpd accounts with PHP and WHM

  I have a VPS with WHM/CPanel which is being used just by me. It's utilizing proftpd. I'd like to, via a PHP script, disable/enable a specific FTP account. I've done this by having PHP call a bash script which removes/adds the user account line to /etc/proftpd/USERNAME password file. However, in order to do this I have to give other write rights to /etc/proftpd/USERNAME. This isn't ideal, and I'd be willing to do it another way. It also seems like WHM is automatically resetting these permissions on a regular basis. Does anybody have any ideas on a better way to deal with this?

• Support ARMv7 instruction set in Windows Embedded Compact applications

  On of the most interesting new features of Windows Embedded Compact 7 is support for the ARMv5, ARMv6 and ARMv7 instruction sets instead of the ARMv4 “generic” support provided by the previous releases. This means that code build for Windows Embedded Compact 7 can leverage features (like the FPU unit for ARMv6 and v7) and instructions of the recent ARM cores and improve their performances. Those improvements are noticeable in graphics, floating point calculation and data processing. The ARMv7 instruction set is supported by the latest Cortex-A8, A9 and A15 processor families. Those processor are currently used in tablets, smartphones, in-car navigation systems and provide a great amount of processing power and a low amount of electric power making them very interesting for portable device but also for any kind of device that requires a rich user interface, processing power, connectivity and has to keep its power consumption low. The bad news is that the compiler provided with Visual Studio 2008 does not provide support for ARMv7, building native applications using just the ARMv4 instruction set. Porting a Visual Studio “Smart Device” native C/C++ project to Platform Builder is not easy and you’ll lack many of the features that the VS2008 application development environment provides. You’ll also need access to the BSP and OSDesign configuration for your device to be able to build and debug your application inside Platform Builder and this may prevent independent software vendors from using the new compiler to improve their applications performances. Adeneo Embedded now provides a whitepaper and a Visual Studio plug-in that allows usage of the new ARMv7 enabled compiler to build applications inside Visual Studio 2008. I worked on the whitepaper and the tools, with the help of my colleagues and now the results can be downloaded from Adeneo Embedded’s website: http://www.adeneo-embedded.com/OS-Technologies/Windows-Embedded (Click on the “WEC7 ARMv7 Whitepaper tab to access the download links, free registration required) A very basic benchmark showed a very good performance improvement in integer and floating-point operations. Obviously your mileage may vary and we can’t promise the same amount of improvement on any application, but with a small effort on your side (even smaller if you use the plug-in) you can try on your own application. ARMv7 support is provided using Platform Builder’s compiler and VS2008 application debugger is not able to debut ARMv7 code, so you may need to put in place some workaround like keeping ARMv4 code for debugging etc.

  I've started learning bash scripting by using this guide: http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/abs-guide.pdf However I got stuck at the first script: cd /var/log cat /dev/null > messages cat /dev/null > wtmp echo "Log files cleaned up." What do lines 2 and 3 do in Ubuntu (I understand cat)? Is it only for other Linux distributions? After running this script as root, the output I get is Log files cleaned up. But /var/log still contains all the files.

• Alps touchpad detected as mouse dell inspiron n5110

  Now I know that this has been asked several times here but I couldn't find any decent solution to it. So I am running the latest Ubuntu on my dell n5110 and my touchpad is detected as a mouse, So I don't have the touchpad options avaliable. can't use multitouch and can't disable it either. I have tried the dkms driver: http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/alps-touchpad/psmouse-alps-0.10/ but when installing it with dpkg I get the following error: ERROR (dkms apport): unable to determine source package for psmouse-alps-dkms Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.2.0-25-generic-pae (i686) Consult /var/lib/dkms/psmouse-alps/0.10/build/make.log for more information. I have installed all the updates as well. Can someone help me out with this issue?

• Starting small custom development company, type of niches to target?

  This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps. • Trouble with Samba Domain

  I'm having a bit of trouble setting up this Samba domain correctly. I'm getting an Access Denied error when trying to add a Windows XP machine to the domain. I'll go through my scenario in detail, but for those of you wanting a TLDR summary it'll be at the bottom of this post. I have HP Proliant server with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed. For this particular environment, I need this server to act as a PDC, file server, and print server. I began by updating and upgrading the packages (of course). Then went to install samba, gnome-desktop, wine, and cpanm. Samba was, of course, for the PDC and file/print services. The GUI was needed because a certain software has to be installed on there that needs a GUI. Wine was needed because the software is Windows-native. And cpanm was for a perl script I have running. For Samba, I went into the smb.conf file and enabled domain logons, changed the workgroup/domain name, the logon script for a per-group basis (netlogon/%g), enabled the netlogon and profiles share, and setup a couple of custom shares for the file service. The printer was added later, and seems to be working just fine. I then restarted the services, and used the net groupmap command to ensure my unix groups were mapped correctly to the Windows groups. After this, I went to a Windows box, and was able to successfully join the domain without a problem. After some fidgeting with the software to get it running on the win boxes from the server (it's a records management system program, which stores it's database files on the server), I went to add another computer to the domain. But now it's saying Access Denied. Before when I had this trouble it was because I forgot to add the group "machines" so Samba could create machine accounts. Thinking this was the case, I manually created the machine account to test this theory. However, it would still give me an Access Denied error. That must mean it has something to do with permissions now, correct? I've been fighting with this server for the past two weeks. If it's not one thing that;s wrong, then it's something else completely different. This would be the third time I've actually reinstalled everything to start over. I'll post snippets of my system settings below. If anything else is needed, just say the word and I'll gather up the info. The unix group 'domadmin' is the Domain Admins group. • Ubuntu Server 12.04 start fails after update

  I did an system update on ubuntu server 12.04, which requestet an reboot. Since that, the system never reaches the login. (initramfs) i tried already to repair it using a live system: + Mounting the filesystems (/boot ext, / btrfs) + fsck ran without problems. + /etc/fstab seems to be OK. + apt update/upgrade on chroot succeed. now, i have no more ideas :/

• How to run a file with sudo without a password?

  I've made a script that preforms various system tasks, that I run regularly, but I have to use sudo to run the script, despite the fact that I own it because it runs root privileged commands. How can I add make sudo let me run this one file without having to enter my password every time I run it? I know that there are questions regarding running commands without a password, but I wasn't able to find one on running a file without a password. I am aware of the security risks, but I'm at home on a computer that I trust.

  I type dvorak, but I don't like to confuse other users by having it be a system-wide default. I have a script that runs setxbmap dvorak that I can call when I want dvorak and likewise another script that runs setxbmap us when I want qwerty. For X, that's fine. How do I get this behavior in the real console (Ctrl-Alt-F3)? i.e. how can I change the console keymap to dvorak without setting a system-wide default. Having to sudo to do it is fine, but it can't be the default keymap for any console user. Resources like this and this seem to be explaining how to permanently alter the system but I need to change it on the fly temporarily. In BSD this was possible by using wsconsctl.

• After update, audio won't play throw hdmi cable

  Yesterday (June 7th) I faithfully updated a bunch of stuff through update manager (though I'm not sure what since I never read what I updated any more because I'm a bad person). Afterward, I discovered that I could no longer play audio through my tv via HDMI. The sound settings menu seems to have completely changed and the shell script that I wrote a week ago (with much pain and effort as I had never before written a shell script) to toggle between my laptop speakers and the HDMI cable output no longer works. When I type in pactl set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-surround in the command line I get Failure: No such entity Presumably this means something with Pulse Audio changed but, while I'm learning a lot about the inner workings of Ubuntu/Linux, I'm not an expert and would love some help. EDIT: So I noticed that pacmd set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-stereo seems to get everything working. Still, shouldn't there be a way to do this through the GUI as well?

• Building a Map based WebApp fast?

  I want to build a WebApp which is basically a map with points of interest, filters, and a list of those points. Something really similar to AirBnB, or any other map based app. Of course, I could just take Google Maps API and build what's around. But I guess a lot of people already did that, and may be I could use their work to make mine faster. Here's what I need : Adding multiples POI A list of POI that are showed on the map A way to filter POI Most have a behavior to handle a lot of POI Can works on mobile and tablet I already know one template that can do nearly all of this, it is call Bootleaf. But I would like to know if you know others that might work better.

• How to pass results of bc to a variable

  I'm writing a script and I would like to pass the results from bc into a variable. I've declared 2 variables (var1 and var2) and have given them values. In my script I want to pass the results from bc into another variable say var3 so that I can work with var3 for other calculations. So far I have been able write the result to a file which is not what I'm looking for and also I've been able to echo the result in the terminal but I just want to pass the result to a variable at moment so that I can work with that variable. echo "scale=2;$var1/var2" | bc

  I would like to install the penmountlpc touchscreen driver in Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dialogue Flybook A33i.
