  How to make one user account to be like root for some other user account, e.g. to be able to read, write, chmod all it's files, chown from this account to master and back, kill/ptrace all it's processes and to all thinks root can, but limited only to that particular slave account? Now I'm simulating this by allowing "master" user to "sudo -u slaveuser" and setting setfacl -dRm u:masteruser:rwx ~slaveuser. It is useful as I run most desktop programs in separate user accounts, but need to move files between them sometimes. If it requires some simple kernel patch it is OK.

• How to route traffic through a specific SOCKS proxy on a per-app basis?

  I'm running a certain desktop app (actually via AIR if it makes any difference) which doesn't have any built-in proxy configuration settings. I need to get all traffic just from this app directed through a secure SOCKS proxy. This implies I can't use the global network preferences, as these would affect many other apps. Is there any way to force all network communication through a given SOCKS proxy on a per-app basis? It would also be helpful to know if there's a way to perform such routing globally, based on specific IP addresses (as this could allow for some reasonable workaround).

• How do I add a shapefile in ArcGIS via python scripting?

  I am trying to automate various tasks in ArcGIS Desktop (using ArcMap generally) with Python, and I keep needing a way to add a shape file to the current map. (And then do stuff to it, but that's another story). • Missing management console for Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition

  I work for a small (80 employees) non-profit organization. We have a Windows network with a domain. The file server is running Server 2003. A vendor recently installed Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition, ver. 10.1.8.8000. It used to be the case that when I logged in to the file server as administrator, I would see an icon on the desktop that took me to the management console for the antivirus software. I could check logs, statuses of client machines, set policies, etc. That icon is now missing, and I can't find anything relevant under the "Start" menu. There is an entry for Symantec Antivirus, but that only gives me the panel for the client process, not the overall management console for the whole network. I don't want to call the vendor back to fix this (I'm baffled how we lost the icon in the first place). Can someone offer some guidance?

  OK, this is a similar question to this. Actually I am trying to prevent people from multiple login into one single computer and use my application simultaneously. This is because I want to stop them from buying one license, install it on a machine, and use certain remote desktop technologies to do multiple user login. I want to prevent them from violating the license agreement. Is there anyway that I can do in my application for this? Or is multiple login simultaneously is simply not possible?

• Why can't get more speed on iperf on windows xp

  I test my bandwith and throughput using iperf (jperf) on desktop PC with WinXP. I can't get more than 3Mbit/s outside until I change TCP Window size - about 84Kb is ok. but I can't force XP to use this value by default.. I try very many magic spells on Registry, use many TCP Optimisers - but nothing works. I will accept that that everything is ok, when I reboot the PC, run iperf and will see 18.1Mbit - like my Linux box standing very near my Windows XP Box. Is it possible?

  I have a fairly standard 2-year old desktop computer (quad-core intel, single hard drive, decent video card, 300W power supply) which recently started acting up. I'm not sure what the cause is, so hopefully you can help. Sometimes (once a week-ish) I press the power button and nothing happens. No blinking, no sounds, no nothing. If I remove the power cord (or flip the switch on the power supply) I hear a capacitor discharge. If I leave it in the "no power at all" state for about 5 minutes then I can put the plug back in and the computer works perfectly. What is the issue? What do you think I have to replace?

• Outlook 2007 Clients attachments not opening correctly

  Hello, Thanks for taking the time to read this. We are having an issue on our Terminal Server clients that has me perplexed. We are running Server2003 x64 and Exchange 2007 environment. When we attempt to open an attachment for example .jpeg and the user selects to open the file, it prompts them to select a program to open the file with. The file associations apear to be fine, if I save the document to the desktop and open it, it opens with the correct program automatically. If i select "always open using this program" it will then open automatically, but I don't want to have to do this for all file types we open regularly on each client. Is this some sort of Exchange server security setting that is forcing them to associate the file? Does outlook or exchange maintain its own file association database? Thanks for reading!

• Finding the most common errors in event logs using Powershell.

  I have the event logs for one of our servers locally in .evtx format. I can load the log file into PS using the command: Get-WinEvent -Path D:\Desktop\serverlogs.evtx What I would like to do is on the Message field group events where the text matches by a certain percent (say 80% the same). As we have stacktraces for errors in the details which will be the same, but we also log the client's IP, url that was accessed which will likely be different. I want to group them so that I can work out the most common errors to prioritize fixing them and as there are 25,000+ errors in the log file I would rather not do it manually. I think I can work out how to do most of this, but am not sure how I could do the 'group fields which are mostly the same' part, does powershell have anything like this built in?

  Hii All, I would like to insatll windows 2003 server on my desktop machine which already has Windows XP service Pack 2 installed . I dont want to overwrite XP but i want to have a option to select XP or Windows 2003 server while booting . I am not sure how to go about this , am afraid if i insert Win 2003 cd and start installing directly it may overwrite XP :( . My HD is 350 GB n RAM is 2 GB with 8 partitions .   hi im not sure if this is the right place to ask but, i just build a new desktop for gaming. i3 530 2.93 GHz P7H55-M/USB3 Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600MHz iGame Gtx 460 Win 7 32bit Huntkey X7 900W Everytime i start the computer it would run normally until the windows loading and will just stuck and hit the blue screen.i tried everypossible way to repair,restore the windows but nutin seems to be working. I'm not sure if its compatibility problem or Bios or even Ram,since the beep is a normal beep and will only blue screen when loading the windows. if anyone can help me id appriciate it. thx

• Recover data from phyiscally damaged harddrive. What are my options?

  I was trying to replace the power supply in my desktop PC and ended up physically damaging the data connection from the hard drive to the motherboard. The plastic shelf for the copper prongs on the hard drive broke into the cable. Here is a picture of my handy work: Picture of damage I went to Best Buy Geek Squad to discuss my options and they said that they will need to send it to the recover center it could cost anywhere between $250 to $1600 USD to recover the data out the hard drive Is this reasonable for data recovery from a phyiscally damaged hard drive? Are there any other options I can explore? I am going to talk to the data doctors to see what my options are.

  I have a Windows XP SP2 desktop PC. It connects to the internet with a LAN cable (there's a wireless router for my laptop in between). The problem should be software because: when i tried connecting the same LAN cable to my laptop it works when i plugin the LAN cable (onboard) the green light is on and the orange light flickers when i tried the other cable (that feeds the wireless router) i have the same problem it worked a few days ago, nothing specific changed I tried removing the ethernet card from the device manager, and windows automatically reinstalled it. What could cause this? What can I try?

• ATI Catalyst setting to stretch Windows XP start bar across both displays

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series video card, using the ATI Catalyst Control Center to span my Windows XP display over the laptop display and a Dell flatpanel LCD. This works fine, but I'm used to NVIDIA multi-desktop that let me control the "Start bar" to either exist on only 1 screen... be duplicated on both, or (what I want), stretched across both. Is this possible with the ATI card/Catalyst Software? If not, are there any utilities out there that will handle this for me? • How do I automatically add icons to windows 7 task bar?

  Hi, I use the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to install images and applications using a Lite-touch installation method. I would like to automatically add the icons to the "superbar" after installation so the users will be more inclined to use the improved task bar, rather than continuing to use desktop icons. I understand that there is no programmatic access to the task bar to prevent applications from adding themselves to the task bar, filling it with unwanted applications. Is there a way to use MDT, or even GPO to add icons to the task bar, or shall I use a VBS to add the Start menu shortcuts to the task bar?

• Is it a bad idea to make roaming profile share available offline?

  This is regarding a Windows 2008 R2 domain. The Documents, Desktop, Application Data folders are all redirected to users' home directory (mapped as Z:). The users home directory is configured to be offline for mobile users. User profiles are configured as roaming, and located on a separate share (not mapped as a network drive), just accessed via an UNC path. Would it be a good or idea to make the roaming profile share available offline for mobile users using the caching option "All files and programs that users open from the share will be automatically available offline"?

How do i make Windows Task Scheduler tell me with the script fails (or doesnt run/not found)? I dont care if a prompt comes up, an email or something that appears on my desktop. I want to be notified if something goes wrong. On my server crontab emails me about errors which is great. I want something like that on my windows 7 local computer.

• Can't delete keyboard shortcut set for a .ink file

  So, I installed the Chrome App Launcher on my PC (now on Win8.1) a few weeks ago, and, as I use it very often, I wanted to assign a keyboard shortcut for it. So, I right-clicked the icon on my desktop, and I assigned Ctrl+Alt+<. The problem is... I moved the shortcut to my taskbar, and suddenly noticed that when I wanted to write the "\" (on a Belgian keyboard), it launched the Chrome App Launcher, which is very annoying. I wanted to change it back, but I can't... I deleted the taskbar shortcut, but the keyboard shortcut still launches the App Launcher. I also tried creating a new shortcut with the same association, hoping that it would crush the existing one, but it didn't work. I searched on Google for similar issues, and I couldn't find any... x~x So... How can I delete this shortcut association..?

• Unresponsive virtual OS

  Hopefully someone has a suggestion on how to resolve this. Configuration Host: Win 2003R2 w/Virtual Server 2005R2 Virtual1: Win 2003R2 w/Sql Server 2005 Virtual2: Win 2003R2 w/WSS 3.0 Situation This past weekend the power went out and took down the servers (no UPS, it's a desktop standing in as dev testing server). Since the servers went down the Virtual2 server after running WSS fairly heavily for an hour to two will become unresponsive via HTTP. If I login via virtual server's remote control I don't get anything beyond a background screen. The CPU counter on the virtual server's master status shows that it isn't doing anything. The only thing I have been able to do is to turn off Virtual2, which loses any state changes. Shutdown commands issue from the virtual server master status are ignored. After restarting Virtual2 the event logs and application logs don't indicate what caused the problem. Anyone have an idea as to how to repair the OS, or maybe what could be the problem? • TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again? • Severe latency only on one machine and only when accessing intranet site

  I have one desktop machine that is having consistently high latency only when trying to load a page from an intranet site. Using the Chrome Developer Tools, the site shows a "Waiting" time of 4-5 seconds each page load. Other machines have <50ms, and the problem machine loads regular internet sites with <1s latency, so the problem is only on one machine and only when accessing the intranet site. This is a small business and all the hosts are on 192.168.0.1/24 I would have suspected a connection issue with the problem machine but normal internet sites are not having latency. Then I would have looked at connection issues with the intranet web server but other machines are not having latency to it. What else can I look at to troubleshoot this?

• Timeouts when connecting to SQL Server since installing SP1 for Windows 7

  Hi, I just installed SP1 for windows 7 and I have severe performance degradation when connecting to SQL Server 2005 since then. Establishing connection takes more than 30 seconds while it's instantaneous on another computer. Firewall is disabled and I didn't make any change to the configuration. It happens both when trying to connect with a hostname and with an ip address. Everything else seems to be fine (for instance, I'm have no issue connecting to other computers with remote desktop) What can cause such a problem? Thanks in advance! Edit : uninstalling the SP1 solves the issue instantly.

• MacBook Pro Trackpad freeze / holds click on its own

  My MacBook Pro's Trackpad shows an annoying behavior in the last few days. I think the only relevant thing that changed is the firmware for the Trackpad. An update has been distributed via Software Update a few days ago. Sometimes when i click somewhere the Trackpad won't recognize the mouseup, i.e. hold the click on its own. Clicking again seems to stop the holding and issue a new mousedown, but then again, no mouseup I.e. when i click on a file on the desktop the file will be dragged. But i can't stop dragging! Clicking in a browser or text document will select the text/images. Did anyone notice similar behavior? Any ideas or fixes?

• Can't boot into Linux partition after installation

  I just installed Ubuntu. I created a partition in MacOSx using Disk utility, then deleted the partition and installed Ubuntu on the free space created. After the installation, Ubuntu said it would reboot. I hang on shutdown (which is normal, as google told me), so I used the power button to turn the MacBook off. Now I want to boot into Ubuntu. Pressing option/alt on startup only shows me the MacOSx and Windows partition. Also, the Linux partition isn't showing up on my MacOSx desktop. And in Disk Utility, I can see 3 grayed out partitions: "disk0s4", "disk0s5" and "Linux Swap". What can I do to boot into Ubuntu without losing my other partitions? Thank you for your help.
