  I'm new to using MINA. I've a program which uses MINA NIOconnector to connect to host. I'm able to send data and also receive. This is clear from log4j log which i'm attaching below. • TwoWay Binding With ItemsControl

  I'm trying to write a user control that has an ItemsControl, the ItemsTemplate of which contains a TextBox that will allow for TwoWay binding. However, I must be making a mistake somewhere in my code, because the binding only appears to work as if Mode=OneWay. • non-static variable cannot be referenced from a static context (java)

  I ask that you ignore all logic.. i was taught poorly at first and so i still dont understand everything about static crap and its killing me. My error is with every single variable that i declare then try to use later inside my methods... i get the non-static variable cannot~~ error I can simply put all the rough coding of my methods inside my cases, and it works but then i cannot use recursion... • How do you traverse and store XML in Blackberry Java app?

  I'm having a problem accessing the contents of an XML document. My goal is this: Take an XML source and parse it into a fair equivalent of an associative array, then store it as a persistable object. the xml is pretty simple: <root> <element> <category_id>1</category_id> <name>Cars</name> </element> <element> <category_id>2</category_id> <name>Boats</name> </element> </root> Basic java class below. I'm pretty much just calling save(xml) after http response above. However, I have been at this for days now. I can never seem to get all child nodes, or the name / value pair. When I print out the vector as a string, I usually end up with results like this: [{ = root, = element}] and that's it. No "category_id", no "name" Ideally, I would end up with something like [{1 = cars, 2 = boats}] Any help is appreciated. Thanks

• Should we hire someone who writes C in Perl?

  One of my colleagues recently interviewed some candidates for a job and one said they had very good Perl experience. Since my colleague didn't know Perl, he asked me for a critique of some code written (off-site) by that potential hire, so I had a look and told him my concerns (the main one was that it originally had no comments and it's not like we gave them enough time). However, the code works so I'm loathe to say no-go without some more input. Another concern is that this code basically looks exactly how I'd code it in C. It's been a while since I did Perl (and I didn't do a lot, I'm more a Python bod for quick scripts) but I seem to recall that it was a much more expressive language than what this guy used. I'm looking for input from real Perl coders, and suggestions for how it could be improved (and why a Perl coder should know that method of improvement). You can also wax lyrical about whether people who write one language in a totally different language should (or shouldn't be hired). I'm interested in your arguments but this question is primarily for a critique of the code.   Problem I have 3 tables: People, Phones and Emails. Each person has an UNIQUE ID, and each person can have multiple numbers or multiple emails. Because seen from the example above: Steven has 2 phone number and 3 emails. • The HTML5 doctype is not triggering standards mode in IE8

  i work for a company where all our sites currently use the XHTML 1.0 transitional doctype (yes i know it is very old school). I want to change them all to use the HTML5 doctype seeing as it is backwards compatible. One of the reasons why i want to make the switch is because in IE8 if someone has the developer tools installed then the old XHTML doctype switches the browser into compatibility mode and renders the page as IE7. From reading up on it i was led to believe that the HTML5 doctype will set any page to render in standards mode, but this is not happening when i test it on our staging server it still flips into IE7 rendering mode. The weird thing is if i save the page with HTML5 doctype locally and open it, it is rendering in IE8 standards mode. There must be something else causing it to drop into compatibility IE7 rendering. Any ideas what this could be? • Receicing POST data in ASP.NET

  Hi, I want to use ASP for code generation in a C# desktop application. To achieve this, I set up a simple host (derived from System.MarshalByRefObject) that processes a System.Web.Hosting.SimpleWorkerRequest via HttpRuntime.ProcessRequest. This processes the ASPX script specified by the incoming request (using System.Net.HttpListener to wait for requests). The client-part is represented by a System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker that builds the System.Net.HttpWebRequest and receives the response from the server. I inspected it in debug mode and none of the members did contain neither the parameter-name "postTest" nor the parameter-value "654". I also tried the BinaryRead method of Request, but unfortunately it is empty. This corresponds to Request.InputStream==null and Request.ContentLength==0. And to make things really confusing the Request.HttpMethod member is set to "GET"?! To isolate the problem I tested the code by using a PHP script instead of the ASPX script. This is very simple: print_r($_GET); // prints all GET variables print_r($_POST); // prints all POST variables And the result is: Array ( [getTest] = 321 ) Array ( [postTest] = 654 ) So with the PHP script it works, I can access the POST data. Why does the ASPX script don't? What am I doing wrong? Is there a special accessor or method in the Response object? Can anyone give a hint or even know how to solve this? Thanks in advance.

• PHP script keeps doing mmap/munmap

  Hello, My PHP script contains a loop, which does nothing much more than echoing and dereferencing pointers (like in $tab[$othertab[$i]]- stuff). It was working great until yesterday, when this script starting being VERY slow (like 50 times slower than before). After using strace, i figured out that 90% of the time, the script does mmap/munmap. • SVN: Release branch headaches, how to merge in website revisions as and when cleared to go live?

  I need a sanity check here if we can, any ideas on correcting/changing the following are very welcome! We've been getting ourselves in knots of late with our SVN and are trying to correct it by putting a Trunk/Release system in place. We have a large website that we develop on and we store it all in SVN. Heres what we had in mind: We have trunk and a release branch All work gets checked into Trunk. When a feature is deemed ready for the next release it is merged into a Release branch. We only have one release branch and just tag "Latest" when we do a push to live We hope to be able to get all the files changed from Latest to Head to give us a zip that we can upload (any ideas on an easy way to do this via scripting?) So we set all this up and where very happy with ourselves. Except its not working and heres why. We work on lots a different features/fixes/problems at once and they don't all get nicely checked in feature complete (but always working at least). Then sometimes you have to wait for Clients to sign off. As a result you end up with revisions which are "ready for live" being scattered with ones which are "still being worked on" in trunk. That means that the completed revisions are not getting merged in sequentially but out of order. I thought SVN could handle this, clever little thing it is, but apparently not. Heres an example: Pete changes some CSS to make a new button look pretty (Revision 1) Dave add some CSS to the bottom of the same CSS file as Pete's for a new feature (Revision 2) Dave's mod gets the nod so he merges it into Release and commits it with a log message mentioning revision number and bug tracking id. Pete adds more buttons to finish this mod, no CSS changes here though (Revision 3) Pete then merges his mods (Revision 1 and 3) into the Head of Release (which has Daves merge in it) but this over-writes Daves CSS additions which now dissapear completely. This leads to the site being broken and the Release branch being pretty much useless. So we tried some other ideas like reverting Release back to "Latest" and then just merging in all the Revisions 1,2 and 3 in order. This worked fine until we had Revision 4 which was not ready for live and Revision 5 which was. Suddenly we are getting ourselves in knots again with exactly the same problem! Ok so take three. Revert to Latest, merge in Revision 5, then do any update back to Head. Tree conflicts galore! So thats a no no. I cracked in the end and built it all up manaually but its not something I want to do regular, ideally I want to script our deployment but can't while Release is in such a mess. HELP! What the heck are we doing wrong? I can't seem to find any solutions to this problem of wanting different none sequential Revisions in Release. If its not possible thats fine but how the heck are we meant to get stuff live easily. We can't branch for every single change, the site takes 30 minutes+ to check out it would take too long. Side note, we are using TortoiseSVN so can we keep command line examples to a minimum in any answers? Latest version of TSVN and SVN Version 1.6 so we have the funky merge tracking etc. EDIT: An excellent blog post which deals with the dev/release cycle (although using GIT but still relivant) thought everyone would like to read it if they found this question interesting. • Cannot connect to MySQL with JDBC - Connection Timeout - Ubuntu 9.04

  I am running Ubuntu and am ultimately trying to connect Tomcat to my MySQL database using JDBC. It has worked previously but after a reboot the instance now fails to connect. Both Tomcat 6 and MySQL 5.0.75 are on the same machine Connection string: jdbc:mysql:///localhost:3306 I can connect to MySQL on the command line using the mysql command The my.cnf file is pretty standard (Available on request) has bind address: 127.0.0.1 I cannot Telnet to the MySQL port despite netstat saying MySQL is listening I have one IpTables rule to forward 80 - 8080 and no firewall I'm aware of. I'm pretty new to this and I'm not sure what else to test. I don't know whether I should be looking in etc/interfaces and if I did what to look for. It's weird because it used to work but after a reboot it's down so I must have changed something.... :). I realise a timeout indicates the server is not responding and I assume it's because the request isn't actually getting through. I installed MySQL via apt-get and Tomcat manually. Even though the line it's supposed to be matching comes directly from the webpage, it fails to match at all. So I'm wondering what it is I'm missing that's preventing this code from working. If I take out the <td class="vaM taC">< img src="http://icons-ecast.wxug.com/i/c/a/[%w_]+.gif" it'll match condition flawlessly. (For whatever reason, I can't get the above line to display correctly, but there is no space between the `< and img) Can anyone point out what is wrong with it? Aside from the pattern matching, I assure you the line is verbatim from the webpage. Another question I had is the ability to match across line breaks. Is there any possible way to do this? The reason why I ask is because on that same page, a few of the things I need to match are broken up on separate lines, and since the actual pattern I'm wanting to match shows up in other places on the page, I need to be able to match across line breaks to get the exact pattern. I appreciate any help in this matter!

Long story short: It seems that the CASCADE DELETE keys were largely responsible, and I'd like to know (a) if this makes sense, and (b) why it's the case. We have a schema of, let's say, widgets, those being at the root of a large graph of related tables and related-to-related tables and so on. To be perfectly clear, deleting from this table is actively discouraged; it is the "nuclear option" and users are under no illusions to the contrary. Nevertheless, it sometimes just has to be done. The schema looks something like this: Widgets | +--- Anvils (1:1) | | | +--- AnvilTestData (1:N) | +--- WidgetHistory (1:N) | +--- WidgetHistoryDetails (1:N) Nothing too scary, really. A Widget can be different types, an Anvil is a special type, so that relationship is 1:1 (or more accurately 1:0..1). Then there's a large amount of data - perhaps thousands of rows of AnvilTestData per Anvil collected over time, dealing with hardness, corrosion, exact weight, hammer compatibility, usability issues, and impact tests with cartoon heads. Then every Widget has a long, boring history of various types of transactions - production, inventory moves, sales, defect investigations, RMAs, repairs, customer complaints, etc. There might be 10-20k details for a single widget, or none at all, depending on its age. So, unsurprisingly, there's a CASCADE DELETE relationship at every level here. If a Widget needs to be deleted, it means something's gone terribly wrong and we need to erase any records of that widget ever existing, including its history, test data, etc. Again, nuclear option. Relations are all indexed, statistics are up to date. Normal queries are fast. The system tends to hum along pretty smoothly for everything except deletes. Getting to the point here, finally, for various reasons we only allow deleting one widget at a time, so a delete statement would look like this: DELETE FROM Widgets WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID Pretty simple, innocuous looking delete... that takes over 2 minutes to run, for a widget with no data! After slogging through execution plans I was finally able to pick out the AnvilTestData and WidgetHistoryDetails deletes as the sub-operations with the highest cost. So I experimented with turning off the CASCADE (but keeping the actual FK, just setting it to NO ACTION) and rewriting the script as something very much like the following: DECLARE @AnvilID int SELECT @AnvilID = AnvilID FROM Anvils WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID DELETE FROM AnvilTestData WHERE AnvilID = @AnvilID DELETE FROM WidgetHistory WHERE HistoryID IN ( SELECT HistoryID FROM WidgetHistory WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID) DELETE FROM Widgets WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID Both of these "optimizations" resulted in significant speedups, each one shaving nearly a full minute off the execution time, so that the original 2-minute deletion now takes about 5-10 seconds - at least for new widgets, without much history or test data. Just to be absolutely clear, there is still a CASCADE from WidgetHistory to WidgetHistoryDetails, where the fanout is highest, I only removed the one originating from Widgets. Further "flattening" of the cascade relationships resulted in progressively less dramatic but still noticeable speedups, to the point where deleting a new widget was almost instantaneous once all of the cascade deletes to larger tables were removed and replaced with explicit deletes. I'm using DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS and DBCC FREEPROCCACHE before each test. I've disabled all triggers that might be causing further slowdowns (although those would show up in the execution plan anyway). And I'm testing against older widgets, too, and noticing a significant speedup there as well; deletes that used to take 5 minutes now take 20-40 seconds. Now I'm an ardent supporter of the "SELECT ain't broken" philosophy, but there just doesn't seem to be any logical explanation for this behaviour other than crushing, mind-boggling inefficiency of the CASCADE DELETE relationships. So, my questions are: Is this a known issue with DRI in SQL Server? (I couldn't seem to find any references to this sort of thing on Google or here in SO; I suspect the answer is no.) If not, is there another explanation for the behaviour I'm seeing? If it is a known issue, why is it an issue, and are there better workarounds I could be using?

  I was trying to make my own class for currencies using longs, but Apparently I should use BigDecimal (and then whenever I print it just add the $ sign before it). Could someone please get me started? What would be the best way to use BigDecimals for Dollar currencies, like making it at least but no more than 2 decimal places for the cents, etc. The api for BigDecimal is huge, and I don't know which methods to use. Also, BigDecimal has better precision, but isn't that all lost if it passes through a double? if I do new BigDecimal(24.99), how will it be different than using a double? Or should I use the constructor that uses a String instead? EDIT: I decided to use BigDecimals, and then use: private static final java.text.NumberFormat moneyt = java.text.NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance(); { money.setRoundingMode(RoundingMode.HALF_EVEN); } and then whenever I display the BigDecimals, to use money.format(theBigDecimal). I don't do: price = price.setScale(2, RoundingMode.HALF_EVEN); Because then it would always round to 2 decimal places and wouldn't be as precise in calculations. So its all solved now, I guess. But is there any shortcut to typing calculatedResult.setScale(2, RoundingMode.HALF_EVEN) all the time? All I can think of is static importing HALF_EVEN... EDIT: I've changed my mind a bit, I think if I store a value, I won't round it unless I have no more operations to do with it, e.g. if it was the final total that will be charged to someone. • How to sanely configure security policy in Tomcat 6

  I'm using Tomcat 6.0.24, as packaged for Ubuntu Karmic. The default security policy of Ubuntu's Tomcat package is pretty stringent, but appears straightforward. In /var/lib/tomcat6/conf/policy.d, there are a variety of files that establish default policy. Worth noting at the start: I've not changed the stock tomcat install at all -- no new jars into its common lib directory(ies), no server.xml changes, etc. Putting the .war file in the webapps directory is the only deployment action. the web application I'm deploying fails with thousands of access denials under this default policy (as reported to the log thanks to the -Djava.security.debug="access,stack,failure" system property). turning off the security manager entirely results in no errors whatsoever, and proper app functionality What I'd like to do is add an application-specific security policy file to the policy.d directory, which seems to be the recommended practice. Another workaround (besides just disabling the security manager in tomcat) is to add an open-ended permission to my policy file: grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; I presume this is functionally equivalent to turning off the security manager. I suppose I must be getting the codeBase declaration in my grants subtly wrong, but I'm not seeing it at the moment.

• php script dies when it calls a bash script, maybe a problem of server configuration

  Hi!!! I have some problems with a PHP script that calls a Bash script.... in the PHP script is uploaded a XML file, then the PHP script calls a Bash script that cut the file in portions (for example, is uploaded a XML file of 30,000 lines, so the Bash script cut the file in portions of 10,000 lines, so it will be 3 files of 10,000 each one) The file is uploaded, the Bash script cut the lines, but when the Bash script returns to the PHP script, the PHP script dies, & I dont know why... I tested the script in another server and it works fine... I dont believe that is a memory problem, maybe it is a processor problem, I dont know, I dont know what to do, what can I do??? (Im using the function shell_exec in PHP to call the Bash script) The error only happens if the XML file has more than 8,000 lines, but if the file has less then 8,000 everything is ok (this is relative, it depends of the amount of data, of strings, of letters that contains each line) what can you suggest me??? • Technology to communicate with someone with expressive aphasia?

  A family member had a stroke a few years back and now has expressive aphasia. She understands what is said to her, is cognitive of what is going on, but cannot express herself. She is able to respond to yes/no questions (do you want to go shopping? are you looking for your earrings?) She is not, however, able to read (English is not her native language and she hasn't read Hindi for decades.) I am the technologist in the family, and I intend to come up with something to help us communicate. The idea is to have some sort of picture book where she can point to what she wants. My first question: does some sort of assistive technology for people with expressive aphasia already exist? These can be hardware or software devices? If not, then such a software doesn't seem difficult to write. My initial thought is to have an interface with pictures - maybe separated by category (food, shopping) - where she can point to an individual picture to indicate what she needs. We could easily add more items with such a software, and we could have an interface where she (or we) could "flip pages". Which suggests that the best solution would use a touch screen rather than a mouse. It would be really difficult to train her to aim a mouse or find keys on a keyboard. We're thinking of maybe getting a tablet and writing some basic software. But tablets computers are expensive and fragile - I'm not sure if it would be able to stand spills or being knocked about in a nursing home. So my next question: what kind of tablet-like devices are out there which I can program on? I don't know anything about hardware, but if there is something then we could special-order it. What would be safe and durable for such a project? We could do something on an iPod or cell phone, but I feel like that interface would be too small. Finally, does anyone here have experience with this kind of assistive technology? Things I might not anticipate when designing such a system? edit I've added a (pretty hefty!) bounty. I'd kinda like to open this question up to any suggestions, comments, and experiences that people might have. This is a pretty real and important project, so while we will (are working on) a solution, any insights would be particularly helpful. Right now the plan is to mount a screen in her room. We'll either teach her to use a trackball or use a touch-screen panel, after seeing what she is able to use with a simple prototype. • Python - Bitmap won't draw/display

  I have been working on this project for some time now - it was originally supposed to be a test to see if, using wxPython, I could build a button 'from scratch.' From scratch means: that i would have full control over all the aspects of the button (i.e. controlling the BMP's that are displayed... what the event handlers did... etc.) I have run into several problems (as this is my first major python project.) Now, when the all the code is working for the life of me I can't get an image to display.
