• Calling a running C# application from VBA

  I have some VBA code that needs to talk to a running c# application. For what it's worth, the c# application runs as a service, and exposes an interface via .net remoting. I posted a question regarding a specific problem I'm having already (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2556163/from-vb6-to-net-via-com-and-remoting-what-a-mess) but I think I may have my structure all wrong... So I'm taking a step back - what's the best way to go about doing this? One thing that's worth taking into account is that I want to call into the running application - not just call a precompiled DLL...

• The benefits and hassles of moving entirely to a WPF Project

  Hi, I have a project that i started as a WinForms application as that was the format i was confortable with at the time. I have since started dabbling in WPF an introduced some WPF UserControls (mainly grids) into my project and absolutely love them. The question i have is, is there any real advantage to me changing the UI Project of my solution into a purely WPF project, and get rid of any WinForms? I am fully aware that each format suits a certain environment, and you wouldnt be able to give a definitive answer without knowing more of the details, but i would like to know peoples opinions, and if anyone has done a silimar thing of converting an existing WinForms App into a WPF frontend, and any observations they made in doing so. • What is the life cycle of the XNA GraphicsDevice on the Xbox 360?

  I'm working on an XNA project that doesn't use the built-in Game class, mostly for learning purposes (so I can mess with different game loop types, etc). It's only designed for the Xbox 360, because the hardware is consistent and I don't have to worry about compatibility among different PC hardware configurations. So far, it's working well and I can clear the screen to a color, but I'd like to make sure I handle the GraphicsDevice correctly before moving on. What exactly is the life cycle for the GraphicsDevice on the Xbox 360? Is it ever lost or reset automatically? I know that on Windows, it's lost when the window loses focus, but the Xbox obviously doesn't manage focus. It appears to even keep the graphics device when the Guide pops up, which is the closest thing I can find to "losing focus" on the Xbox. I'd like to think it's simply a matter of "fire and forget," which would make a lot of other things much easier (only needing to load content once, for instance). But I want to make sure.

• sem_open() error: "undefined reference to sem_open()" on linux (Ubuntu 10.10)

  So I am getting the error: "undefined reference to sem_open()" even though I have include the semaphore.h header. The same thing is happening for all my pthread function calls (mutex, pthread_create, etc). Any thoughts? • PHP's apache_setenv function causes 500 Internal Server Error

  apache_setenv ( 'no-gzip', 1 ) I'm trying to disable gzip for a certain page's output, but only that page. This works fine on testing servers, but not the production server, which is running the same thing (CentOS and Apache), works on Ubuntu though. Anyway, do you know why? Or is there some other alternative? I was thinking of using ob_start () to put all output in a buffer, and then unzip it myself with a PHP function then call ob_end_flush ()... or would it not be gzipped until right before Apache sends it to the client? • PHP: why uniqid returned value is only 13 digits long

  uniqid() function returns a 13 digits long hexadecimal number. According to the spec in php.net site, the function uses microtime to generate the unique value. But microtime returns numbers in string format as the following one: "0.70352700 12689396875" which are basically the microseconds and the seconds elapsed since 1970. This is a 9+11 digits decimal number. Converting a 20 decimal number into hex would result in a 16 digits hexadecimal NOT a 13 digits one. I also thought to take out the "0." part that seem to never change, and the last two digits of the microsec part that seem to remain always "00". Doing this the decimal number would be only 9+11-3 digits long, but still a decimal number of 17 digits when converted into hex would result in 14 digits hexadecimal number NOT 13. You probably think I'm crazy in asking such a thing, but I'm concerned about using uniqid, unique values are important to be unique, a duplicated value could screw up an entire application.

• setting source classpath in eclipse with stupid project structure

  What do you guys do, when you have huge project built with ant for instance, where the source folders are right bellow the root project folder, for building classpath from source files ? putting entire project as a source folder is nonsense. Putting separate folders as source folders can't be done if they are part of the package hierarchy and the only thing I could think of, is to copy the source folders into a separate folder and add it then as source folder which is weird but I don't know how else to do it. Having to duplicate sources just because of the eclipse way of making classpath and also because of somebody doing stupid project structure

• How can I set MAXLENGTH on input fields automatically?

  I'm using ASP.NET MVC RC2. I have a set of classes that were auto-generated "Linq-to-SQL Classes", where each class models a table in my database. I have some default "edit" views that use the neat-o Html.TextBoxFor helper extension to render HTML input fields for the columns in a table. However, I notice that there is no MAXLENGTH attribute specified in the generated HTML. A quick google shows that you can add explicit attributes using TextBoxFor etc. but that would mean that I need to hard-code the values (and I need to remember to do it for every input). This seems pretty poor, considering that everything was automatically generated directly from the DB, so the size of the columns is known. (Although, to be fair, the web-side stuff has to work with any model objects, not just with Linq-to-SQL objects). Is there any nice way of getting this to do the right thing?

I am working on an application where I have a long listing of different states approximately 20 states and each state consisting of several zones in addition to the weather forcast of each zone eventually. Now the thing is that I have already created the Listing of hardcore data in a list view of all the states. Again I need to add the hardcore data of several zones for each state(min 4 to 5 zones/ state). So , now I am wondering that whether I have to create the separate classes with hardcore names of all the zones in each state or is there any easy way out for doing the same.   I am writing a shell script (which I suck at) and I need some help. Its a script that is moving things from git to CVS (not important). The thing is, i a file path: controllers/listbuilder/setup/SubmissionRolesListbuilderHandler.inc.php and I need to be able to do: cvs add controllers; cvs add controllers/listbuilder; cvs add controllers/listbuilder/setup; cvs add controllers/listbuilder/setup/SubmissionRolesListbuilderHandler.inc.php Can someone help me out? The best I've come up with so far is to recursively add ALL files in my working tree, but that seems overly inefficient.

  for development of interactive 3d web applications, which engine is recommended? I am aware that WebGL has been anounced to become standarized for all browsers in the near future (1~2 years). I am afraid that by investing time into a proprietary game engine such as Unity, torque would be not great once plugin-less open source 3d engines appear (webgl & 3D javascript). Is this a stupid thing to worry about ? Should I begin with Unity3D (it's demo's and tools were mind blowing).

• How to Deploy Simple Java Projects into EAR?

  Hi, I am using MyEclipse and I use an Enterprise Application Project (EAP) that automattically deploys my Web and EJB Projects. These projects use some other projects that are just POJOs, "simple" java projects. Like a library kind of thing. The problem is that when I change something in on of the "simple" java projects I have to redeploy my entire EAP in my JBoss in order to see the changes. What I want is a way to automatically deploy those projects (POJOs) in the EAP, so hot code replacement works with those too. Any ideas?

• Silverlight project builds in VS2008 but fails when using MSBuild

  Hi, We have 2 Silverlight projects in the same solution; SLGlobalResource and SLData. SLData references SLGlobalResource (using references add reference projects). When we build it in debug within VS2008, everything builds fine and all is good. But when we build it using: msbuild TheSolution.sln /p:Configuration=Debug /t:rebuild SLData fails with the following error: ViewModels\ImportViewModel.cs : error CS0246: The type of name space "SLGlobalResource" could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) This also happens in TeamCity (I guess because the TeamCity vs2008 runner uses MSBuild) Any ideas? Thanks Edit: There are actually 33 projects in total in the solution. I didn't think this was relevant before but now I'm thinking it could be - could this be a build order thing?

  I have a central dispatcher servlet that has a servlet mapping of : <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>dispatcher</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> When i try to use the blob store service's createUploadUrl("/uploadComplete") it maps to a URL for e.g *'/_ah/upload/agp0d2VldG15cGljchsLEhVfX0Jsb2JVcGxvYWRTZXNzaW9uX18YEgw'*. Before the Blob store service can handle the upload and redirect to /uploadComplete; my dispatcher servlet gets called and i am therefore not being able to upload anything. Is there a servlet/ filter that i can map to /_ah/upload/* in my web.xml ? How do i avoid the dispatcher servlet from getting called before the Blob store service can do its thing?

• Dynamic Midi generation and playback on Android: Possible?

  Strangely I find no support for Midi in Android. The only thing that comes close is the Jetplayer, but this only takes a existing .jet file. I want to dynamically generate a midi file with some intervals and play it. I even thought about just manually creating a .jet file with a tone and then transposing it with the jet player, but it limits the transposing to -12, +12. Which is not so good for me. There also is a ToneGenerator on Android, but it's limited to predefined tones with no way to transpose. Does someone know how to achieve midi generation and playback on Android?

  the question is probably extremely easy to resolve, but I need to resolve it because I need to carry on with my project. I am using SQLEXPRESS 2008 at home, and I've been working on an ASP.NET MVC app that stores my DB in an mdf file in the project's folder. The problem is that the SQL Server in the Uni labs is SQL SERVER 2005, and when I try to open the mdf file with the VS Server Explorer,It says that the version of the mdf file is more than the server can accept. The only oprion that comes to my mind is exporting the DB as an sql file, just like I've done it thousand times with phpmyadmin. the thing is that the SQL MANAGEMENT STUDIO EXPRESS is not the most usable tool in the world, and for some strange reason all the articles I could find in Google were irrelevant. Please, help.

  I'm trying to make this command: sed bla bla filename | awk '{printf "%s %s_entry_%.3f %.3f %.3f %.3f",$1,$3,$4,$5,$6,$7}' But the thing is, i want the %.3f part to be variable. So in one case it could be %.3f and in another it could be %.3f %.3f %.3f. So i'll just use a static one in my example code for clarity. So if i want 4 of these %.3f and put them in variable $values like so: values="%.3f %.3f %.3f %.3f" Then how can i put this string in the awk expression, without making awk to just put literally "${values}" in there. • How to set AeDebug to get a minidump with the name of the process ?

  I have to perform some post mortem debugging on a C++ project. Known way to perform is to set the cdb debugger as a minidump generator and to process the dumps collects afterwards. I read nearly the whole web and I didn't find a solution to produce a minidump with the name of the process that has crashed Is there a way to set AeDebug\Debugger registry variable in such a manner that cdb generates a dump file with the name of the process ? When I encapsulate the call to cdb.exe in a batch file, it starts well but stays blocked on the symbol searching. I must perform a Ctrl+C in order to stop the batch, then the minidump, with the correct process name, is created... but of course I can't set up such a thing in an unattended production environment... Has anybody done that before ?

• DDD: Client-side script to enforce invariants

  Hello, One thing that I'm confused about in regards to DDD is that our domain is supposed to handle all business logic and enforce invariants. I have noticed some people (me included) handle certain invariants in the presentation layer (i.e. WebForms, Views, etc) with javascript. This is mainly done to improve performance so the server is not hit for every request which may be invalid. Even though this approach may be beneficial performance-wise, it violates DDD principles. What if the business rules are changed? This way we don't have a rich domain where all the business rules are captured. In case of a change, we should change the domain as well as the presentation layer. Has anyone come across this situation before? I'd like to know your thoughts on this. Cheers, Mosh
