Ultra-Portable Laptop or Tablet PC for Development and Sketching

I am a software developer that primarily writes in PHP, [X]HTML, CSS, Javascript, C# and C++. I use Eclipse for web development, Visual Studio 2008 for C++ and C# work, TortoiseSVN, Subversion server for local repositories, SQL Server Express, Apache and MYSQL. I also use Office 2007 for word processing and spreadsheets and use Vista Ultimate 64 as my primary operating system. The only other things I do on my laptop are watch movies, surf the internet and listen to music. I currently have a Acer Aspire 5100 (1.4 GHz AMD Turion X2, 2 GB of RAM and a 15.4" screen). This thing does not cut it in performance or portability, and in addition, my DVD drive failed. And before anybody posts about vista: I have had XP Professional 32 on it for the last two years, and recently upgraded to Vista 64. It is actually faster (with areo disabled) then XP; so it is not the OS that is causing the laptop to be slow. I usually sketch a lot, for explaining things, developing user interfaces and software architecture. Because of my requirements, I was thinking about a Lenovo X61 Tablet PC. It outperforms my current laptop, is significantly more portable, and... is a tablet. My question is: do any other software developers use this (or other tablets) for programming? Does it help to be able to sketch on the computer itself? And is it capable of being a good development machine? Will it handle the above software listed? If not, what is the best ultra-portable laptop that is good for programming? Or are ultra-portable laptops even good for programming? I could manage with my 15.4" screen, but am spoiled by my two 19" at my home desktop and my job's workstation.

Building a CMS in PHP: Development tools

I'm planning to build a CMS in PHP and MySQL, mainly for my own amusement and education. (Though who knows, I may come up with something useful and cool. Anything's possible.) I'll be asking questions about code architecture etc. later. For now, I'm more interested in development tools. So far, all my playing with code has been done on a web server, and I've edited over FTP. I was thinking it might be quicker to use a localhost. Also, that way, I could use version control (which I've never done before). So, A. How do I set up a localhost server with many subdomains on an Ubuntu 9.10 computer. Is XAMPP for Linux the way to go, or should I use a standard Apache distro? (Or another webserver altogether?) For that matter, is it possible to set up more than one webserver on the same computer, and to use them for different localhost subdomains? B. How do I set up a version control thingy covering all the code (which will be on several subdomains of localhost, and in a few shared folders)? I've read Joel Spolsky's HgInt tutorial, and it makes Mercurial look good. And simple, especially if you're working on your own. C. Should I continue to use gEdit to write HTML/CSS/JS/PHP, or is there a better free editor out there for these languages?

Play youtube video in full screen ?

Hi all, First of all sorry, If somebody finds this question is repeated (haven't found any by myself). But when used in the iPad, on clicking the web view it starts playing the video in the web view itself and shows options to go to full screen, while I want to start the playback in the full screen from the beginning, like it does in the iPhone. JQuery Hover does not work Mozilla

I have the following Snippet of code.The hover has a problem in Mozilla - It changes color on hover but some times it does not revert back when we go out.Mind you it only happens sometimes.Also in such cases if I examine the HTML using FireBug I can see that the Extra Class is assigned even after hover is out.It works OK on IE .This is a simplified version Also as you can see I am setting color on the TR.But this does not change the Color on TextBoxes inside TR. Virus on site but can't find where

WARNING! THIS IS ABOUT A VIRUS ON MY SITE. IT APPEARS IT HAS BEEN THERE FOR SOMETIME AND I'VE HAD NO PROBLEMS. BUT PLEASE BE CAREFUL. READ EVERYTHING I SAY AND SEE IF YOU CAN HELP ME WITHOUT VISITING THE LINK. AVG PICKS UP ON IT AND BLOCKS IT, MCAFEE DOES NOT. Sorry about the warning, obviously i'm not here to get anyone infected or anything like that. Basically I run the website sortitoutsi dot net. Ages ago I got a virus on my computer, they got hold of my FTP passwords and added some lines of javascript to the top of my site. I removed them and believe it was fixed. However i'm using the "Web Developer" extension for Firefox and chose to view all javascript on my page and find there are various links to horrible urls such as: gittigidiyor-com.excite.co.jp.webmasterworld-com.eastmusicdirect.ru:8080/aboutus.org/aboutus.org/google.com/skycn.com/torrents.ru.php and gittigidiyor-com.excite.co.jp.webmasterworld-com.eastmusicdirect.ru:8080/index.php?jl= These terms do not appear anywhere. In the source code, in any of the javascript or the css. I also can't see that there are any rogue images that I don't recognise either. So i've no idea where this javascript is coming from. Can anyone suggest how I can find references to these links and remove them? I can see them both in the Web Developer firefox extension and in the net tab using Firebug. Any help would be greatly appreciated

How do I remove the top margin in a web page?

I have had this problem with every web page I have created. There is always a top margin above the 'main container' div I use to place my content in the center of the page. I am using a css style sheet and have set margins and padding in the body to 0px and set the margin and padding to 0 in the div: body{ margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; padding: 0; color: black; font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; background-color: #E2E2E2;} div.mainContainer{ height: auto; width: 68em; background-color: #FFFFFF; margin: 0 auto; padding: 0;} I have looked online many times, but all I can see to do is set these margin and padding attributes. Is there something else I should be doing? The margin exists in IE and Firefox.

Sorting a list in PHP

Alright, so I've just (almost) finished my first little php script. Basically all it does is handling forms. It writes whatever the user put in to the fields of the form to a text file, then I include that text file in the index of the little page I have set up. So, currently it writes to the beginning of the text file (but doesn't overwrite previous data). But, several users wants this list to be alphabetically sorted instead. So what I want to do is make whatever they submit fall into the list in alphabetical order. The thing here is also that all I use in the text file are divs. The list is basically 'divided' into 3 parts. 'Title', 'Link', and 'Poster'. All I have done is positioned them with css. So, can I sort this list (the titles, in this case) alphabetically and still have the 'link' and 'poster' information assigned the way they already are, but just with the titles sorted? It don't use databases at all on my site, so there is no database handling at all used in this script (mainly because I'm not experienced at all in this).

need to add secure ftp file upload area to a client's website

This is a variation on a previous question as I am having tons of trouble finding answers in all my relentless online searches. Am designing a website for an architecture firm. They want their clients to be able to upload files to them, through a link on their site, via ftp. They also want to have a sign in for their clients, and ensure the uploads are secure. I can figure out how to make a form that has a file upload area - but just don't understand the ftp and the secure part... I understand html, css and a bit of JQuery; the rest is still very challenging to me. Have found something called net2ftp that claims to do what I'm looking for - but the even the installation instructions (for administrators, here: http://www.net2ftp.com/help.html) confuse me. Do I need a MySQL database? Where do I put in Admin password they refer to? It goes on... Is there anything "easier" out there that anyone knows of? I have read that I should be Googling "file managers" - but don't know if these can be embedded in a client's website. I even need to understand of what happens to said file, and where it ends up, when client clicks the upload link. Oh - I am so in over head on this one.

jQuery .trigger() or $(window) not working in Google Chrome

I have this jQuery ajax navigation tabs plugin that I created using some help from CSS-Tricks.com and the jQuery hashchange event plugin (detects hash changes in browsers that don't support it). The code is little long to post it here but it goes something like this: Part 1) When a tab is clicked, it gets the href attribute of that tab and add it to the browsers navigation bar like '#tab_name': window.location.hash = $(this).attr("href"); Part 2) When the navigation bar changes (hash change), it gets the href change like this: window.location.hash.substring(1); (substring is to get only 'tab_name' without the '#'), and then call the ajax function to get the info to display. I want to automatically trigger the plugin to load the first tab when the page is accessed, so at the start of the code I put: if (window.location.hash === '') { // If no '#' is in the browser navigation bar window.location.hash = '#tab_1'; // Add #tab_1 to the navigation bar $(window).trigger('hashchange'); // Trigger a hashchange so 'Part 2' of the plugin calls the ajax function using the '#tab_1' added } The probles is that it works in FF but not in Chrome, I mean, everything works but it seems like the $(window).trigger('hashchange'); is not working because it doesnt get the first tab.. Any suggestions??

Easily (as in WYSIWYG) customize the docbook output

I've used DocBook in the past and I love the idea behind the separation of content from presentation. I am very comfortable editing XML directly. In my extensive search to find the best documenting solution for my needs I am always coming back to this one solution: DocBook - Build system (ant, make, etc.) - Output I have seen lots of information concerning the best WYSIWYG, XML, Text editors for writing DocBook including alternative markup languages like asciidoc. All these solutions focus on the creation of DocBook or the nightmare of the DocBook tool chain. No one ever addresses the Output side other then to say "Just use XSL" or "Custom scripts" When tasked to make a document or manual I don't want to worry about spending countless hours attempting to reprogram, customize, and modify the XSL, CSS, and shell scripts (i.e. O'Riely books). That is a very arduous task. My query: is there a tool that makes the customizing easier? And is there anything that could be similar to say Pages or Word in that the user creates a template and the tool chain does the rest? Attempting to do a visual task like pretty logos and fixing all the broken layouts that the default XSL comes up with (pagination is a mess) is very difficult from a text editor. Content is easy. Editing DocBook XSL was truly a nightmare when I did it in the past. I've searched and I find lots of info on XML editors but nothing on XSL editors. Or am I lacking a key understanding of the process. Thanks.

Career Choice in JEE, are EJBs standard?

I have chosen to go the JEE route for a career path but I have been having a hard time determining which core technologies that I need to be most familiar with. I'm at the point I can write web apps without a problem with JSP's and regular servlets using JDBC or some basic Hibernate stuff (I know, HTML, CSS and have used MVC extensively on a number of different platforms). What I'm trying to find out is if there is some standard as far as J2EE technologies go. When I look at most of the Job listings, occasionally you will see someone mention Struts or Spring but rarely do I see any mention of EJB's. So my question is really, are EJB's basically required by most JEE employers? Or are most of them working with POJO's? Is it a mix? I have a hard time figuring out if I should put the majority of my time into Struts, Spring/Hibernate, EJB's, etc. And if I do need to master EJB's what version should I learn? 2.1 or 3.0. 3.0 has some obviously better features but I figure a lot of companies probably chose to write their apps in 2.1 just because it was the standard of the time and now migrating would be a big deal. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

ASP.NET catching controls from html generated from the database

I have a set of websites that basically do the exact same thing in terms of functionality, the only thing that varies is the css and how the html is laid out. Is there a way to generate the html from a database (ie retreiving the html from a table) and then catching the controls (like buttons, textboxes etc) from the code behind? What is wrong with the JavaScript event handling in this example? (Using click() and hover() jQuery

I'm working on a sort of proof-of-concept for a project that approximates Firebug's inspector tool. For more details, please see this related question. Here is the example page. I've only tested it in Firefox: http://troy.onespot.com/static/highlight.html The idea is that, when you're mousing over any element that can contain text, it should "highlight" with a light gray background to indicate the boundaries of that element. When you then click on the element, it should alert() a CSS selector that matches it. This is somewhat working in the example linked above. However, there's one fundamental problem. When mousing over from the top of the page to the bottom, it will pick up the paragraphs, <h1> element, etc. But, it doesn't get the <div>s that encompass those paragraphs. However, for example, if you "sneak up" on the <div> that contains the two paragraphs "The area was settled..." and "Austin was selected..." from the left - tracing down the left edge of the page and entering the <div> just between the two paragraphs (see this screenshot) - then it is picked up. I assume this has something to do with the fact that I haven't attached an event handler to the <body> element (where you're entering the <div> from if you enter from the left), but I have attached handlers to the <p>s (where you're entering from if you come from the top or bottom). There are also other issues with mousing in and out elements - background colors that "stick" and the like - that I think are also related. As indicated in the related question posted above, I suspect there is something about event bubbling that I don't understand that is causing unexpected behavior. Can anyone spot what's wrong with my code? Thanks in advance for any help!

jQuery - select onchange to slide in / slide out div or form

Hi, I am trying to enhance a form, by showing only relevant fields depending on initial selection via a form select field. It is an order form for 3 products and all 3 products have unique properties. My idea was to hide all the content in divs, then reveal the relevant div when the product is selected. I have found some solutions that show / hide a div, but none with any animation. It doesn't have to be a slide but just something nice! The alternative is instead of revealing a div, would be to load a seperate form, but this seems unnecessary. I am not sure whether i need a plug in, as I am pretty new to jquery. Getting jQuery datepicker to attach to a TextBox within a ListView

I am using the jQuery Datepicker without any problem for TextBox controls that are non-templated. However, I am unable to get the datepicker to work with a TextBox that is in an EditItemTemplate of a ListView control. jQuery event "looping"

Hi I´m trying to code a tooltip (Yes I know, I have my reasons to avoid plugins in this case) in jQuery. Whe I show the tooltip and leave the mouse in the same place the show and hide repeats forever. It´s like the element triggers the hover event again and again and again. Adding jQuery event handler to expand div when a link is clicked

I'm using a bit of jQuery to expand/hide some divs. I need to add an event handler so that when a link is clicked, it opens a corrisponding div. Each toggled div will have a unique class assigned to it. I am looking for some advice about how to build the event handler. I have jQuery setup like so: $('.control').click(function(){ var master = $(this).parent().parent(); var first_div = $(master).find(".first-div"); var second_div = $(master).find(".second-div"); $(first_div).toggleClass("hidden") $(second_div).toggleClass("hidden") }); This setup toggles the visibility of the divs, click the control button it hides one div and show the other. However this just hides and shows each div in a flash. I am looking to add some animation to the transitioning of the divs, maybe have one slide up and the other slide down when the 'control' is clicked and vice versa but I am unable to achieve this. Could anyone help out and give some advice on how to do this? Cheer Eef

Posting forms to a 404 + HttpHandler in IIS7: why has all POST data gone missing?

OK, this might sound a bit confusing and complicated, so bear with me. We've written a framework that allows us to define friendly URLs. If you surf to any arbitrary URL, IIS tries to display a 404 error (or, in some cases, 403;14 or 405). However, IIS is set up so that anything directed to those specific errors is sent to an .aspx file. This allows us to implement an HttpHandler to handle the request and do stuff, which involves finding the an associated template and then executing whatever's associated with it. Now, this all works in IIS 5 and 6 and, to an extent, on IIS7 - but for one catch, which happens when you post a form. See, when you post a form to a non-existent URL, IIS says "ah, but that url doesn't exist" and throws a 405 "method not allowed" error. Since we're telling IIS to redirect those errors to our .aspx page and therefore handling it with our HttpHandler, this normally isn't a problem. But as of IIS7, all POST information has gone missing after being redirected to the 405. And so you can no longer do the most trivial of things involving forms. To solve this we've tried using a HttpModule, which preserves POST data but appears to not have an initialized Session at the right time (when it's needed). We also tried using a HttpModule for all requests, not just the missing requests that hit 404/403;14/405, but that means stuff like images, css, js etc are being handled by .NET code, which is terribly inefficient. Which brings me to the actual question: has anyone ever encountered this, and does anyone have any advice or know what to do to get things working again? So far someone has suggested using Microsoft's own URL Rewriting module. Would this help solve our problem? Thanks.

JQuery - Fade in new Background Image?

Hi, I think I may be trying something that isn't possible. I was recently tasked to create a html version of the flash site. On the flash site when you click on the body the image changes. I have done this with JQuery. Its brilliant! However.. it isn't "flash" enough. The powers that be want a fade effect between images. This is where I have come completely undone. This is how my script works at the moment. Images are stored in a div called photos. This is hidden. <div id="photos"> <img src="image.jpg" alt="Some caption" style="#page-bg-color" /> </div> When the page is loaded jquery checks to see if the first image is loaded. If it isn't then a loading symbol spins. When the image is loaded, it becomes the body background. $("body").css('background', 'url(' + photos[currentImage]["url"] + ') no-repeat 50% 50% fixed ' + photos[currentImage]["background"]); I have tried the following. I have tried animate. However, this doesn't work. I have tried this plugin: http://plugins.jquery.com/project/bgImageTransition This doesn't work either. It appears to clone the tag and do something. I assume it isn't working because you cannot clone the body tag. That or it is really old and is no longer compatible with the current version of JQuery. I fear that I have coded my way down a dead end. Does anybody know how I could make this work?

It is similar to stackover flow, but I am keeping my tags in differnt table. so here are the tables/class in linq to entities. Question 2 : I need tags and their count too to show in related tags, so in first case my related tags class should have following result. RelatedTags Tag Count 2 1 3 1 4 2 8 1 in the second case when two tags are requested the result should be like RelatedTags Tag Count 3 1 4 1 I have get the first thing working by converting a sql query in linqer, but that seems like a hell. so want to know if there is any better idea. Browser performance when combining image resizing with animated movement

The animation is rather complex and requires the need to move multiple images (9) from location (x,y) to location (x2,y2) while simultaneously increasing the image size from 215px wide to 930px wide. While doing some initial testing of this animation with just 1-2 images, I noticed a lot of choppiness in FF handling of this animation. To try and isolate the problem, I removed the dynamic resizing of the animation and just moved it from point A to point B. What was interesting was that I saw the same behavior when simply moving a 930px image that was resized down to 215px (via the CSS width or inline width properties). When I try the same animation with a different image that is actually 215px wide, it performed smoothly. I then tried the same animation with the original 930px wide image (with no resizing) and it performed well also. This makes me wonder if the browser is having to "resize" the image down to 215px each time it is moved which is causing the choppiness. Is this a correct assumption? If so, is there any other way to optimize the animation to allow for simultaneous image resizing and image movement? Notes: 1) One optimization I have done is to position the images absolutely in order to minimize the reflow process. 2) I have tested the animation using both jQuery and the fX animation framework.

Auto complete from database using CodeIgniter (Active Record)

I have a form on my website in which one is able to submit a cat. The form contains inputs such as "Name" and "Gender", but I am just trying to get the auto completion to work with the "Name" field. Jquery / PHP - pre-loading next page before navigating to it.

Hey all Using jQuery, is there a way to prevent going to the next page until the animation has finished AND the next page has completely loaded (including images)? The code below works but it is a bit clunky. You can see what I am trying to achieve here: http://bit.ly/aOeYgE The first three or so pages work. But when you click to go to the homepage a few times (after it's cached) you will see that it jumps, and the animation isn't very smooth. As you can see with the code below, the height is immediately set to 0, then when the page has loaded the height is set to 500px.
