• HDDs randomly falling off raid

  I really need help on this it's Saturday long weekend.No customer service help:( .I recently build new server/light duty desktop.Main purpose is only file sharing.Raid configuration :Adaptec 6805 ,8x 3TB HDD WD Red,Intel RES2SV240 expander,Raid 6,set in Intel mobo DZ 77GA-70K.I upgraded firmwares, but I'm having strange problem. During Build Verify segment 7 got missing.I just reinsert drive into hot swap bay and it started to rebuild Array.After rebuild was done another segments 0 and 5 gone missing while build/verify.I reinserted drives and now I'm praying that raid is going to rebuild successfully from remaining 6 drives,because i already transfer some data on it(I know it was bad idea).I checked S.M.A.R.T on missing drives , it only says link failure and aborted commands on one of them.No Errors on HDDs.Connections and cables are good.I added 2 fans blowing on RAID controller because it was getting too hot, so I guess overheating shouldn't be issue.What can be possibly wrong? • Seemingly random disconnections on Windows Server 2008 R2

  So I have a box running a Windows Server 2008 R2 in my LAN, which is running, among other things, a voip server used by other people. I myself am in the same subnet with the server, while the other users are not. Now, maybe on average twice a day, all the other users get disconnected from the server (and if I take a remote desktop connection to it, I'm not able to open any web pages either). These disconnections usually last only about 5 seconds, but sometimes they may last up to a minute. What could possibly cause this? I have all the updates installed from windows update and the motherboard of the server is asus p5b deluxe (if that is of any interest). edit: Forgot to mention that my own internet connectivity stays intact while the server's does not, and both computers are behind the same router.

• Run shell script on Linux box from a shortcut/app in Android?

  I have an Ubuntu box which runs XBMC, which crashes occasionally. Since I have no keyboard connected,I have to SSH in, kill xinit, then restart it. I was wondering if there's an elegant way of doing this from my Android tablet, so I don't have to go to my desktop PC. I've used ConnectBot and can log in, but typing is laborious, even using the edit keys to scroll back up through the buffer. It seems as though it should be possible to script this so that I can execute a shortcut, or at least select a predefined script to be executed. This would seem to have plenty of applications, and there could be a site of scripts - restart webserver, reboot, email logs etc

• Nvidia driver on Windows 7 causing black screen

  I have just installed Windows 7 on a desktop machine and for the first time ever have had a really tough time doing so, its normally a nice smooth install. This time I found that the monitor would simply go black after completing the installation. I tried reinstalling about 3 times and this did not help. After much searching I discovered that it was the nvidia drivers that were playing up with win 7, so i booted into safe mode, disabled the device, then rebooted to complete the installation. Windows 7 now works fine as long as the nvidia 9600 gt video card is disabled. The moment I enable it, the system requires a reboot and the screen will go black before even getting to the log in screen. I have tried downloading the latest driver and installing it manually, I have also tried uninstalling the device and allowing windows 7 to install it itself. Nothing seems to work. any clues?

• Kubuntu guest on Windows 8.1 Hyper-V won't shut down completely

  I've got a Windows 8.1 Professional laptop with Hyper-V installed, and a Kubuntu 14.04 Desktop VM. When I shutdown the Kubuntu VM, most of the time it gets to the logo screen, and just sits there. It's not frozen, because I can see the glow around the logo brighten and fade. I have installed the four Hyper-V modules, and lsmod shows them all running fine before the shutdown. Also, once it's stuck on the logo screen, if I send a CTL-ALT-DEL to the VM, it restarts immediately. Does anyone have any idea where I'd begin troubleshooting this? UPDATE: I've disabled the startup and shutdown screens, and now can see this output when it's stopped. Hopefully this sheds more light on the problem.

• 1024x768 gone (1024x600 availble) on HDMI, yesterday it worked?

  When I try to play a game called F-22 Total Air War 2.0 I get an error which says that the resolution 1024.768 is unsupported by the harware.. so I look into my desktop options and it looks like there is an option for 800x600, 1024x600, 1152x648 and higher wide screen resolutions but the 1024x768 is gone? I did play the game yezterday, I disconnected the HDMI, got upstairs, played a few more games, came back downstairs, plugged in the HDMI, launched the game and bam I got the error! I have a ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470 and the newest ATI Catalyst Center downloaded 3 days ago. How can I 'enable' the 1024x768 resolution again? Without it I can't play the game on my Big TV and I will be stuck with my little laptop screen.

• How to backup old emails locally in Thunderbird and then remove them from IMAP server?

  I am using Godaddy IMAP email with Thunderbird as my desktop client on Windows 7. The email service has unlimited mailbox size but the local Thunderbird is having troubles due to the large size of the inbox/outbox. I would like to take out old emails from IMAP server and backup them locally. After backing up the old email I would like to delete old email (older than let's say, 2012) from the server. Also I'd like to have them accessible from the local backup if ever needed in the future. This way I might be able to make Thunderbird fast and problem free. Problem is, I am not able to find any instruction to do this in an automated way based on dates etc. I can find some links for Archiving, Compacting and Backup. But unable to find any tutorial about how to backup and archive it locally and delete the original emails from the server.

  OK, so I have a Windows Vista... more specifically this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103182 a Acer Aspire AX3200-U3600A Desktop. I have DirectX 11 and I am trying to update my drivers... During the update of the latest one: GeForce 306.23 Driver my screen flashes a bit and goes black. This is standard when updating GRAPHIC DRIVERS. Then... my screen shifts 50 pixels or so to the left... OFFSCREEN. Not even Auto Image Adjust will fix the screen back... Then after that happens, I get this: Help, please? I just want to update my graphic drivers....

• Grub2 menu after crash

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.

• Removing BIOS Post Messages

  I am working on a project where a standard x86 desktop system will boot and run a single program until it is shut down. I would like to remove all the bios post messages so that it looks a little more "finished" and cleaner when it starts up. I was hoping that there might by a standard implementation/terms to know about so I can avoid having to dig through every manual to see if there are options, or get some advice on a standard set of tools I should be using. I was thinking about getting a board that has an image that covers up the post messages until you press a key and trying to customize it to all black, but it's not clear if this is a good direction. I started looking for OEM motherboards but my searches were filled with standard commercial stuff, or seemed to be way to big for my toy project. What is the best way to go about removing all the bios post messages and just having a blank screen or "loading" message until OS loads?

• Hide a 2nd Monitor from a Programs Print Screen

  I run 2 monitors on a PC that also runs a program for the Freelancing site Elance.com. The program they provide, takes screenshots and uploads them to my account for a client to see at different intervals. My goal is to make the screenshot that the program takes and uploads, to somehow only take a shot of my "Main" or "Defualt" monitor and ignore my 2nd monitor. The main reason is my 2nd monitor generally has private data that I do not displayed to the world on a website. Does anyone know if there is any kind of program or trick I can use that will make it appear that I have 1 monitor when a Screenshot is taken? I am not sure how the program does it and how that works as I am a web developer and not a C++ or any kind of low level programmer. If the Elance program simply runs the same function that is called when a PrintScreen key is pressed on a keyboard, then I am thinking it might be possible to maybe trick that into only the default desktop? Any ideas or help would be appreciated, thank you

  I'm looking for an online task list tool, what I absolutely need is the infinite number of subtask levels, because that's how my mind works. I don't need collaboration. There are a lot of great to do list sites out there, but for some reason most of them have only one subtask level or no subtasks at all. I know about todoist, but its interface doesn't work for me. There must be many more, I guess. Links to desktop tools with the feature are also appreciated as long as they are cross-platform.

  Dear friends, Please tell me whether it is possible for someone on the external network to see the network folder shares of an internal LAN network in DHCP (192.168.x.x) through a Comp-A on an external network in DHCP (123.123.x.x) both networks are on different subnets but Comp-A has access to both networks and can see all the shared drives of both the internal and external networks using firewall is not an option because file sharing is required everywhere. care is taken from viruses/trojans... remote desktop etc is disabled on Comp-A Please let me know. • Configure (Apple) Mail to delete email from IMAP server after specified time

  I am using a corporate mail account which is synchronized via IMAP to both my desktop client and my iPhone, which is exactly the way I like it. However, the account has a limited quota. With POP3 access, this was not a problem, as POP3 clients could be configured to remove messages from server after specified time. This option is missing from my Apple Mail IMAP account configuration pane. Is there a way to replicate this feature with an IMAP account, either on the client, or on the server side? If not, I will probably have to move old messages manually to some local folder on my Mac. Is there a method to retain a single-click searchability of both archived and current mail folders together?

• Drive still usable if Seatools reports errors?

  I have a Seagate 3TB Expansion Desktop drive that was part of a Linux RAID 6 array that failed. I eventually did a zero fill both through Seagate DiscWizard and via Linux dd, neither reported errors. When I ran Seatools now, I got: Short DST - Started 5/31/2014 10:04:36 PM Short DST - Pass 5/31/2014 10:05:37 PM Long Generic - Started 5/31/2014 10:15:19 PM Bad LBA: 518242762 Not Repaired (whole bunch of bad LBAs ommited) Bad LBA: 518715255 Not Repaired Long Generic Aborted 6/1/2014 3:12:18 AM i.e. the short test passed, the long test failed. Unfortunately, the drive is out of warranty, so I can't just RMA it. But I hate tossing a drive that can still be used. So, my questions are: If the zero fill succeeded, and the short test passed, can I still use the whole drive? if not, since I'm using LVM on top of RAID, is there a way to tell either of these to just skip the bad area? If not the above, can I just create partitions before and after the part of the drive with the bad LBAs?

• How to make the Eclipse text editor background transparent?

  Is there a way to make the background of Eclipse IDE text editor transparent? I would like to adjust the alpha transparency of the background, but have the text still be opaque. Perhaps there is a plugin that accomplishes this? I haven't seen any options under preferences. And my search on Google has ended in vain thus far, although I did find some nice color themes. Example (Textmate): Note that the text is still solid. This is important, since making the whole window transparent could cause text to bleed into the desktop wallpaper (or whatever is under Eclipse). On another side note, I'm using the latest version of Eclipse (Helios), on both Windows 7 and Fedora 14. • What is the best CPU I could get for my old setup?

  On my current not-so-good desktop computer, I'm currently running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6550-CPU, and I'm thinking of buying a newer one now that these must be cheap on E-bay and the like. Being a software guy, I'd be grateful for any help in identifying what CPUs that would fit my motherboard so I don't buy a processor which won't work with my computer. It might not be worth it however, since the SATA2-drive is currently what's bottlenecking my system, but I'm still curious about what could be done except for buying an SSD-drive. • Laptop monitor being very dark, no backlight?

  I'm asking for a diagnose of what is probably the problem. Here goes ... laptop monitor (hp 6715s) went dark. I'm using also an external monitor with the laptop, and since it kept its picture, I'm guessing it's not the graphics card. When the night came, and I turned on my desk lamp, I noticed that the laptop monitor is not really not showing anything, but is actually showing my desktop picture - only it's very very very dark. You cannot see anything on it, unless the lamp is focused on it, then you can see the picture, only very dark. Does anybody have any clue what it could be? I'm just looking for informed guessed here, so I have at least some idea of where the problem lies. The closest repair shop is quite some distance away, so going for a bit of self-diagnose before thinking of taking it to them.

Our entire company is cloud based, and I am looking for a good product to manage our remote systems. Currently we do not have on-site AD servers, we are using the Windows Azure AD services, so cannot rely on group policies at this stage. I would like to be able to achieve the following: (they are all laptops) Remote Desktop Support Patch management Lock down software on machines (restrict them) Monitor and manage systems Other benefits would be good, but if I can achieve the ones listed above, it will go a long way. We have a combination of Windows 7 pro & Windows 8 & 8.1 machines. I am currently using Windows Intune, but it is really limited. Really just a glorified patch enforcer. • Recommendation for hardware upgrade: thin clients? Or...?

  I work for an animal shelter in Upstate New York. We have about 50 machines running XP Pro. They're connected to a Windows network with a domain. About half of these computers are used for nothing more than using two web-based apps -- one to keep track of our animals, the other to process credit cards. Having a full-blown desktop PC seems like overkill for this purpose. The PCs are three-to-five years old, and I'd like to come up with a plan to upgrade the hardware. Our donations are down (not surprising, given the economy), so cost is a big factor. Can people recommend some options? Some sort of thin client, maybe?

• Windows share through proxy

  I have a Windows share and on a different subnet. The users on the user subnet can not see the server subnet, although there is a proxy server in place on the user subnet that can. All web traffic is sent through this proxy server (squid). Is there any way to proxy a file share so the users can access it? I have tried an NTFS symlink, but I can't access the symlink through the share. The server is Windows Server 2008 R2 -- I had to stick with Windows because it is running a Remote Desktop Gateway as well.

• need help setting up a VPN for remote computer connection

  I am on a low budget right now. I am currently in the process of starting a computer company. I am in need of a VPN network so I can run Dameware tools for working on customers/partners computers remotely. I will be working with Windows and some Apple and linux machines. I have desktop with an AMD Phenom II 965BE(currently running stable at 3.8Ghz) processor with 8 GB of ram and a radeon hd 6870(i know graphics aren't too useful) and about 1.5TB of HDD space. I am attempting to create a network out of my office based all on one machine that would also be secure for me to remotely connect to my partners computers so when they have issues I would be able to connect and do the diagnosing and repairs remotely. What types of servers besides a VPN server would i need to create this? I have access to all Microsoft products so I can run Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, or any other Microsoft Software. thanks for the help all

• Windows 7 File Transfer Speed over Gigabit is slow

  I've got windows 7 pro running on my file server and my main desktop. Each has a gigabit network connection and I'm connected to a gigabit switch. However, when trying to copy some large files, it's running pretty slow at a measly 12-15 MB/s The data is coming from a 7200RPM SATA drive (which I think should be good for almost 150MB/s) and going to a Drobo on the server connected via FireWire 800, so I can't think of any bottlenecks I might have in the hardware. But TeraCopy still says it's only going at 12-15 MB/s What else could be wrong here?

• Does Google Chrome take over all other browsers no matter what?

  I can not use either IE or Firefox since I have downloaded Google Chrome. I don't even have Chrome set as my default anymore but it opens up anyway. I need to use IE in order to download updates for Windows Movie Maker and I can only download it using IE, thanks to good old Microsoft. And no where can I find a way to access IE on my computer. It is not shown in programs and no shortcut was created on my desktop in the download. Any suggestions? I got to get this video down and I am on a tight deadline. Thanks.
