• Handling cameras in a large scale game engine

  What is the correct, or most elegant, way to manage cameras in large game engines? Or should I ask, how does everybody else do it? The methods I can think of are: Binding cameras straight to the engine; if someone needs to render something, they bind their own camera to the graphics engine which is in use until another camera is bound. A camera stack; a small task can push its own camera onto the stack, and pop it off at the end to return to the "main" camera. Attaching a camera to a shader; Every shader has exactly one camera bound to it, and when the shader is used, that camera is set by the engine when the shader is in use. This allows me to implement a bunch of optimizations on the engine side. Are there other ways to do it?

• How to correctly create a virtual file system?

  A task in my homework assignment asks me to create a virtual file system, mount it, and perform some operations on it. I am supposed to create a file of 10 MB whose bits are all set to 0, format it as ext3 and mount it. This is how I've done that: dd if=/dev/zero of=~/filesyst bs=10485760 count=1 sudo mkfs.ext3 ~/filesyst sudo mount –o loop ~/filesyst /media/fuse Even though I've used /dev/sero, the file i still full of gibberish characters (mostly at-signs). The permissions on /media/fuse are drw-rw-rw- (which are alright), but the permissions on the files inside it are something like this: d????????? ? ? ? ? ? lost+found -????????? ? ? ? ? ? secret_bin Where have I gone wrong?

• Do search engines rank internal redirects negatively?

  A client is in the late stages (code complete) of a website redesign and unfortunately hasn't implemented 301 redirects to point high traffic pages to the new URL's. As I understand it our only option at this point is to create redirects within the CMS. Our CMS allows us to do this: www.mysite.com/category/current-page.html will redirect to www.mysite.com/new-category-name/new-page.html The site now uses custom logic on our 404 page to check this list of redirects and if one exists forwards the user to the new-page.html I understand that using 301 redirects would be the correct way to maintain our page rank but I think that would require a code change which isn't possible. Question How will search engines respond to this? Will they wait until the redirect happens and allow us to keep our page rank (authority, trust, etc) or will they see the 404 page and down-rank us? Worst case...will they make our new-page.html start from a rank of "0"? Thanks for your help.

• Best way to load rigid bodies from file

  I'm trying to switch to bullet for physics simulation. Lemme just say first that I am so pleased with bullet's accuracy and performance. After messing around it for a bit, I'm now trying to load rigid bodies from files. Most of my models are in blender and with some searching, I was able to export them in .bullet format. However, loading the files into bullet doesn't look like an easy task. I've come across this page that points me to a sample application that loads bullet files. But then it goes and says that this loader is just a starting point. Is there any open source library out there that will allow me to load rigid bodies from a file? I don't really wanna spend that much time trying to create my own loader.

• Where to find Joomla components for 1.0.X?

  I need to add new functionality to an old Joomla 1.0.15 installation. To be concrete, I need to add a component that allows me to add custom javascript to my content. I know that there is the option to edit the html source of the content but I rather would like to use a module for this. So I see two options (correct me if there are more): Update Joomla to at least version 1.5 (From some forum posts I found out that can be somewhat complicated). I don't know if it is worth the effort since new functionality requirements come rarely (and I think my client doesn't want to pay for a Joomla version update). Find an appropriate component and leave the old installation as it is. Can anyone point me into the right direction?

• How can I give my client "full access" to their PHP application's MySQL database?

  I am building a PHP application for a client and I'm seriously considering WordPress or a simple framework that will allow me to quickly build out features like forums, etc. However, the client is adamant about having "full access" to the database and the ability to "mine the data." Unfortunately, I'm almost certain they will be disappointed when they realize they won't be able to easily glean meaningful insight by looking at serialized fields in wp_usermeta, etc. One thought I had was to replicate a variation on the live database where I flatten out all of those ambiguous and/or serialized fields into something that is then parsable by a mere mortal using a tool as simple as phpMyAdmin. Unfortunately, the client is not going to settle for a simple backend dashboard where I create the custom reports for them even though I know that would be the easiest and most sane approach.

This is the abstraction of your data layer which you want to show to the outside word.It defines an updatable data model and top-level procedures and functions (called service methods) related to a logical unit of work related to an end-user task. While the base components handle all the common cases through built-in behavior, customization is always possible and the default behavior provided by the base components can be easily overridden or augmented. When you create EO's, a foreign key will be translated into an association in our model. It defines the type of relation and who is the master and child as well as how the visibility of the association looks like. A similar concept exists to identify relations between view objects. These are called view links. These are almost identical as association except that a view link is based upon attributes defined in the view object. It can also be based upon an association. • practical way to learn C?

  I want to dig into C and normally when I want to learn a new language I think of a simple/attainable project goal that has some practical purpose (make use of an api, automate a task, etc...) I'm having a harder time coming up with one for C mainly because everything I read points to the fact that C's primary use currently is in embedded systems and more complex software projects like operating systems. Does this point me to the fact that I don't need to learn it or that I just need to be a bit more convoluted in my learning strategy? References to practical learning resources? (tutorial/how to that produces an end result that has some purpose/benifit)

It was interesting to hear definite patterns emerging from those conversations: “BPM is a journey”, “experiences to share”, “our organization now understands what BPM is”, and my favorite (with some caveats): “BPM is like wine tasting, once you start, you want to try more”. These customers have started their journey, climbed up the learning curve, and reached a vantage point that allows them to see their next BPM destination. They see the next few processes they are going to tackle and improve with BPM. These processes/destinations target both horizontal processes where BPM replaces or coordinates manual activities, and critical industry processes that the company needs to improve to compete and deliver increasing value. Each new destination generates value, allowing the organization to reduce the cost of manual processes that were not supported by apps/custom development, and increase efficiency of end-to-end processes partially covered by apps/custom dev. The question we wanted to answer is how to help organizations experience deeper success with BPM, by increasing their awareness of the potential for reaching new targets, and equipping them with the right tools. We decided that we needed to identify destinations, and plot routes to show the fastest path to those destinations. In the end we want to enable customers to reach “Process Excellence”: continuously set new targets and consistently and efficiently reach them. The result is Oracle Process Accelerators (PA), solutions built using the rich functionality in Oracle BPM Suite. PAs offers a rapidly expanding list of exciting destinations. Our launch of the latest installment of Process Accelerators at Oracle Open World includes new Industry-focused solutions such as Public Sector Incident Reporting and Financial Services Loan Origination, and improved other horizontal PAs, including Travel Request Management, Document Routing and Approval, and Internal Service Requests. Just before OOW we had extended the Oracle deployment of Travel Request Management, riding the enthusiastic response from early adopters among travelers (employees), management and support (approvers). “Getting there first” means being among the first to extract value from the PA approach, while acquiring deeper insights into the customers’ perspective. • How do I set up XDMCP access via GDM?

  I am a newbie to ubuntu linux, and want to setup xdmcp access, so i can access it from my windows box using xming. part of it is learning exercise also, since i know i could use vnc to directly connect to ubuntu. I modified the gdm's custom.conf file like this [xdmcp] Enable=true but when i launch xlaunch, i see a blank screen, further diagnosing with wireshark, i got that the udp port 177 on the linux box is unreachable so i disabled the firewall on linux box, but still same result. I checked with nmap and there is no service listening on UDP 177 port, the gdnsetup on natty is quite different from the older version, where setting up xdmcp was in UI

• Kubuntu 12.04 Won't let me search for wireless network

  Hello I'm running a brand new Kubuntu 12.04 single boot on my laptop, this is the first time I tried connecting to a wireless network. I tried using the network manager app allready on the task bar, but it doesn't let me tick the column to search for wireless networks, i.e. it will untick it automaticaly, it's dissabled by the software or the hardware, but I doubt it. I've tried searching the other questions on this site, and I can't see anything which helps with my problem. I know my wireless card is a Atheros AR9285, I don't think I installed any firmware for it, I'm sorry I can't offer more info but I'm completely new to networking and all that I have for the network to connect to are it's name and password of course.

Improved Knowledge Base region on the My Oracle Support dashboard: recent searches from this region now retain the search attributions (e.g. pre-selected products or release). Search Tip: if the Knowledge Base region doesn't show up as the first region in the right column on the My Oracle Support dashboard, consider personalizing your dashboard to put it first, so that you right there for searching. • Is programming as a profession in a race to the bottom?

  It seems to me that the programming industry is in a race to the bottom. If we take the practices of: Not taking time to implement best practices Using other's people code as much as possible (custom code as a liability) Using increasingly higher level languages to improve productivity GUI based development "tools" that greatly simplify "programming" and do not require people to understand the plumbing behind the code These things imply to me that we are in a race to becoming like any other office worker. It is in the employer's interest for things to not require skill (easier to replace), for things to be prebuilt (less project time). My point here is that a) is there a misalignment between skill and the economic interests of the employer? and b) if there is, how do you mitigate it to enforce professional standards?

  I have a set of custom commands I run on my computers after I install them. How do I make Ubuntu check for updates every 4 weeks and install them automatically on check? I would need this done via command line so I can set it up for usual users when I set up their computers. The first command will make the update manager check for updates every 2 weeks because they not always come so much and to save the bandwidth of the Ubuntu servers. I also need to set it so that users don't need to click to install updates since it's tiring every time I help a friend set up a computer.

  I need to add photo-blog to a site that I'm recently working on. It is very simple site so the blog doesn't have to be very sophisticated. What I need is: a CMS that allows me to create simple blog-like news with one (or more) images at the beginning and some description/comment below. Preferably, I would like to create something that works like sites like these two: http://www.photoblog.com/dreamie or http://www.photoblog.pl/mending/ it must be customizable. I want to integrate it's look as much as possible with current page: http://saviorforest.tk preferably, it should provide some mechanizm for uploading and storing images at the server. • Multiple TOC with MediaWiki using section headings in single page

  I'm running my own installation of MediaWiki, which has been great! I haven't been able to find the answer to this small problem in any post, how to, etc. Here's the setup: Article TOC (limited to showing only H1 and H2) ==H1== ===H2=== ====H3==== ====H3==== I don't want the H3 to show up on the main table of contents, because it would make the list very long. Instead, under the H2, I would like to display another TOC with all the H3's under that listing. From my understanding, you cannot have multiple table of contents on a single page. I've thought about making a template for each H2 that has the H3 links, but that seems like it duplicates a lot of work and creates loads of pages. I'd love a template that sucks all subsection names and spits them out, but I don't see how to do that. Alternatively, is there a way to enable multiple TOCs in a custom install of MediaWiki that I'm missing? Even that would get closer to what I'm trying to do.

• Better control on code updates

  I will briefly explain my situation. I have a website in PHP, this website is powered by a custom framework + some "plug-in" made ad hoc for it. I am the only developer of this. Until now I just test locally any changes than I upload the php files via FTP. I don't feel confortable anymore with this. The code base has grown quite a lot and I need some sort of system that helps to keep track of changes (line by line) and can restore to an old version easly if something goes wrong. Are there any good solution for this?     Ich darf ja keine Namen nennen, aber der Gewinner unserer Umfrage auf der DOAG Konferenz 2012 steht fest und hat sich mit seiner Teilnahme selbst ein erstklassiges Nikolaus-Geschenk gemacht - und zwar ein niegelnagelneues iPad!!! Zugegeben - genau so wie auf dem Bild sieht das iPad des glücklichen Gewinners nicht aus, denn dieser Custom Design Wunsch von mir hätte wahrscheinlich ebenso viel gekostet wie eine ausgewachsene Exadata, aber das wird die Freude nicht trüben. Und freuen können sich auch noch die Gewinner auf den Plätzen 2 bis 5 - nämlich über eine Laptop-Tasche, hochwertigen Stift und Notizmappe aus Leder. Ich freue mich mit den Gewinnern und nicht zuletzt über die rege Teilnahme und vor allem die Ergebnisse der Umfrage. Auch dazu kann ich nicht viel sagen, nur so viel, dass Windows als Server Betriebssystem für Oracle Datenbanken kein Schattendasein führt. In diesem Sinne bin ich gespannt auf die kommende DOAG Datenbank Konferenz im Mai 2013, auf der ich hoffentlich die Gelegenheit bekommen werde, um die Oracle 12c Datenbank auf Windows Server 2012 und Windows 8 vorzustellen. Keynote Sprecher ist übrigens Günther Stürner - das Highlight der Konferenz.
