• Allow Firefox 8.0 access to /proc/[0-9]*/fd/?

  Today I discovered that Firefox 8.0 on Ubuntu 11.10 wanted to have read access to /proc/[0-9]*/fd/. I have made a custom usr.bin.firefox apparmor profile so I have spent many hours testing, but Firefox never wanted to have read access to the /proc/[0-9]*/fd/ directory before, and now suddenly it want it every time I browser the web. The orginal apparmor Firefox profile or any af the abstractions do not allow read access to /proc/[0-9]*/fd/ so I do not understand why this is suddenly happening. Does it sound reasonable that Firefox want to read the /proc/[0-9]*/fd/ directory? or is my system defective?

• Use Adwaita Dark for Libre Office and possibly other apps too?

  I would like to know how to force some apps to use the Adwaita dark theme. I noticed by default that the movie player and photo viewer apps in gnome shell use Adwaita Dark while most other apps use the Light variant. I would really like to set Libre Office to use Dark instead of Light. How would I go about doing this? • Template standard controls for an entirely new look and feel

  This is the  Ineta Live player without the O’Data Feed.  It is a good example of taking the plain Media Player provided with the Encoder install and re-templating it to make it your own.  It also has a custom scrub control that is added in.  I generally put my tempates in a separate resource file.  On this project, I discovered that I had to include the template at the document level because I needed the ability to attach some code behind to fire change state behaviors.  I could not use the blend xaml behaviors for change state inside the template because the template can’ determine the TargetObject. • How to prevent certain applications from accessing the internet?

  I want to prevent certain applications from accessing the internet. When I was using windows XP I had an application (i think it was Zone alarm) which always notified me when an application tried to access the internet. I wonder if there is an application in Ubuntu which would do the same task. If it is possible, please suggest a gui application. the problem is, my internet provider allows me to connect to a single host at a time, that means no two applications can use internet at the same time. When i checked system monitor it showing me that internet is working fine still my browser cant browse.So i want to kill the other application using the internet to browse.

• Compiz setting migration from 12.04 to 12.10

  I just make migration my ubuntu 12.04 home folder to fresh installed ubuntu 12.10. And again have problem with compiz. It have no one my custom settings! How it's possible then full copy home dir not transfer settings? Those things began the compiz start play with digits on config folders. like .compiz-1 or .compiz. I have now idea then I have to use this -1 then not. But I've rename my compiz folders in .gconf and .compiz. Which not help. How get my setting back. And why this mess happening?

  We are running more than 600 Ubuntu systems in our company. It is a data centre so we have certain policies. We have disabled the usage of storage devices in all the Ubuntu systems. However we would like to configure email alerts. If someone inserts storage devices, we should get an email Alert with subject as below, Email Alert: STORAGE DEVICE FOUND on IP: 172.29.35.18 Note: Where as for Windows system, we have certain policies applied in our DC. So there is no problem with Windows system. We need to receive alerts for Ubuntu system also. Any way to accomplish the above task would be great.

  So my site has a blog and gallery, both working the same way. There's an index, and each post has a permalink going to the individual entry. However, if I search for some of the content on Google, often it returns a link to the index, just because it happened to have been on the first page when it was crawled, instead of the individual post pages. This is especially true in cases of images. How can I make it so that Google returns the proper pages for the posts instead of just the main page of my site? My whole site is custom php code I made.

• Testing Git competence

  I hire a lot of programmers for tiny tasks. I very clearly specify that the tasks can only be completed by making a pull request on GitHub. Unfortunatelly, so many programmers do not know Git and often the programmers cannot complete the project due to not understanding/being willing to learn Git, even after they have undertaken the programming of the task. This is bad both for me and for the programmers. Sometimes I end up arguing for why it is inefficient that they just send me a zip file containing the code. Therefore, I am looking for an online service to certify that the programmers know how to make a pull request so I do not waste their nor my time. The certificate should be free for the coders, but may cost me. It is important that the course just focuses on exactly what is needed to make a clean pull request so it should not take more than 5 minutes to go through. Does such a thing exist?

• When JDeveloper IDE doesn't render the visual editor

  Though with Oracle JDeveloper 11g the problem of the IDE not rendering JSF pages properly in the visual editor has become rare, there always is a way for the creative to break IDE functionality. A possible reason for the visual editor in JDeveloper to break is a failed dependency reference, which often is in a custom JSF PhaseListener configured in the faces-config.xml file. To avoid this from happening, surround the code in your PhaseListener class with the following statement (for example in the afterPhase method) public void afterPhase(PhaseEvent phaseEvent) {   if(!ADFContext.getCurrent().isDesigntime()){ ... listener code here ... } } The reason why the visual editor in Oracle JDeveloper fails rendering the WYSIWYG view has to do with how the live preview is created. To produce the visual display of a view, JDeveloper actually runs the ADF Faces view in JSF, which then also invokes defined PhaseListeners. With the code above, you check whether the PhaseListener code is executed at runtime or design time.If it is executed in design time, you ignore all calls to external resources that are not available at design time.

• How can menu bars that require a right click be activated like Ubuntu versions <10.10?

  I've noticed that NetworkManager only has a single, left or right, click menu and no longer has an About menu option to show it's splash screen. In fact all the top bar mini short cut icons have been amputated and crippled leaving them with no rights. This severely impacts on our custom aps., similar to FireFox bookmarks, which can no longer be right clicked to bring up a context menu. It is possible to disengage FF's File|Edit|... menu bar from the top by running it in safe-mode so the menu bar is resident in a window, restoring right clicks, but our aps. do not have "safe modes". How can right clicks in menu bars be restored? reference

• Strategies for removing register_globals from a file

  I have a file (or rather, a list of about 100 files) in my website's repository that is still requiring the use of register_globals and other nastiness (like custom error reporting, etc) because the code is so bad, throws notices, and is 100% procedural with few subroutines. We want to move to PHP 5.4 (and eventually 5.5) this year, but can't until we can port these files over, clean them up, etc. The average file length is about 1000 lines. I've already cleaned up a few of the low-hanging fruit, however the job took almost an entire day for 2 300-500 line files. I am in a quagmire here (giggity). Anyway, has anyone else dealt with this in the past? Are there any strategies besides tracing backwards through the code? Most static analysis tools don't look at code outside of functions - are there any that will look at the procedural code and help find at least some of the problems?

I've spent a lot of time reading about, and tinkering with Liferay but am concerned that it doesn't cover two of my three major concerns I need to have many sites with individual domains HTML/CSS designers need to be able to design the website templates, look and feel, and layouts in their own tools without having to worry about writing scripts Site and page building APIs must be understandable so that a custom builder interface can be created and harness the CMS as opposed to hacking it Liferay nails the first bullet point, but the second two appear to be unsolved. Does anyone have experience with a Java CMS that does all three? Or have any idea how to approach the problem if none exists? Has someone has used a Java CMS and has been able to add this functionality give some insight?

• Forking a repo on GitHub but allowing new issues on the fork

  I have previously forked other people's repos on GitHub, and I have noticed that issues stay with the original repo, and that I can't file issues on the forked repo. I now have the following task. I am working for a small business where development was being done by one of the principals on his personal account. He has amicably left the project, and we would like to migrate that project away from his personal account to a new "role" account on GitHub. I would naturally fork the repo, in order to preserve the code history, but then I'll end up with a repo where we can't file new issues, which is quite undesirable. How can I make a copy of this original repo into our new account, ideally still preserving code history, but be able to file new issues within this new account?

I have IT and developer FTE resources available to me but I am trying to build a list of branding, project, and functionality points to review. What guides or lists can/should I use to evaluate this website before I begin adding features, creating new projects, or even redesigning and redeveloping the site? (I have been a webmaster/designer/developer for small, WordPress/Drupal sites for 10 years. I have been an unofficial webmaster (director/content manager) for a large site for 3 years (no direct development control over Sharepoint administration, IIS, or hosting ... but everything else, I did.   I have to refactor a complex C# app (many dialogs, mixed logic and so on). There is a part managing the communication with special hardware equipments (sending commands and receive data via asynchronous c# callbacks). The code is "spaghetti" with mixed UI/Logic/Communication/etc and my task is to split the layers in a DDD sense. So, to which layer belongs a callback driver routine? The callbacks are creating "bubbles" in the system, up to the UI layer and because of this I cannot enforce the essential principle that any element of a layer depends only on other elements in the same layer or on elements of the layers "beneath" it.   I have configured kernel 3.2.x and made some changes in the kernel. I have compiled it and have the compiled image of the kernel with me. The problem i am facing is as in how to modify the boot loader Grub 1.99 in my case, so that i can boot through the new kernel i have compiled. I looked on net for any tutorials but all of them talked about older versions of Grub ? Can someone please give some info or point me towards some resource ?   This is my first games industry job and my task is to take out one major game component and put in a newer one. So far it's been 5 weeks, and I'm still just staring at errors. I think it could be months before it's at the point that it can compile. It's really getting me down. I'm just changing things over, I'm not really writing anything myself. it's just endless. I fix a thousand errors and nine thousand take their place. I'm sure this must be a common thing, so I was just wondering, how do you cope with this? • Rotation matrix for a 3D vector

  I have a direction vector on which I have to apply some rotation to align it to positive z-axis. To use Matrix.CreateRotationX(angle) of XNA, I need the angle for which I'd have to compute cos or tan inverse. I think this is a complex task to do. Also, eventually those are also converted to sin(angle) and cos(angle) in the matrix. Is there any inbuilt way to create rotation matrix from a 3D vector? However, I can write the function but still asking if there is one already there.

• Why is JavaScript not used for classical application development (compiled software)?

  During my years of web development with JavaScript, I come to the conclusion that it's an incredible powerful language, and you can do amazing things with it. It offers a rich set of features, like: Dynamic typing First-class functions Nested functions Closures Functions as methods Functions as Object constructors Prototype-based Objects-based (almost everything is an object) Regex Array and Object literals It seems to me that almost everything can be achieved with this kind of language, you can also emulate OO programming, since it provides great freedom and many different coding styles. With more software-oriented custom functionalities (I/O, FileSystem, Input devices, etc.) I think it will be great to develop applications with. Though, as far as I know, it's only used in web development or in existing softwares as a scripting language only. Only recently, maybe thanks to the V8 Engine, it's been used more for other kind of tasks (see node.js for example). Why until now it's only be relegated only to web development? What is keeping it away from software development?
