• 7 Reasons for Abandonment in eCommerce and the need for Contextual Support by JP Saunders

  Shopper confidence, or more accurately the lack thereof, is the bane of the online retailer. There are a number of questions that influence whether a shopper completes a transaction, and all of those attributes revolve around knowledge. What products are available? What products are on offer? What would be the cost of the transaction? What are my options for delivery? In general, most online businesses do a good job of answering basic questions around the products as the shopper engages in the online journey, navigating the product catalog and working through the checkout process. The needs that are harder to address for the shopper are those that are less concerned with product specifics and more concerned with deciding whether the transaction met their needs and delivered value. A recent study by the Baymard Institute [1] finds that more than 60% of ecommerce site visitors will abandon their shopping cart. The study also identifies seven reasons for abandonment out of the commerce process [2]. Most of those reasons come down to poor usability within the commerce experience. Distractions. External distractions within the shopper’s external environment (TV, Children, Pets, etc.) or distractions on the eCommerce page can drive shopper abandonment. Ideally, the selection and check-out process should be straightforward. One common distraction is to drive the shopper away from the task at hand through pop-ups or re-directs. The shopper engaging with support information in the checkout process should not be directed away from the page to consume support. Though confidence may improve, the distraction also means abandonment may increase. Poor Usability. When the experience gets more complicated, buyer’s remorse can set in. While knowledge drives confidence, a lack of understanding erodes it. Therefore it is important that the commerce process is streamlined. In some cases, the number of clicks to complete a purchase is lengthy and unavoidable. In these situations, it is vital to ensure that the complexity of your experience can be explained with contextual support to avoid abandonment. If you can illustrate the solution to a complex action while the user is engaged in that action and address customer frustrations with your checkout process before they arise, you can decrease abandonment. Fraud. The perception of potential fraud can be enough to deter a buyer. Does your site look credible? Can shoppers trust your brand? Providing answers on the security of your experience and the levels of protection applied to profile information may play as big a role in ensuring the sale, as does the support you provide on the product offerings and purchasing process. Does it fit? If it is a clothing item or oversized furniture item, another common form of abandonment is for the shopper to question whether the item can be worn by the intended user. Providing information on the sizing applied to clothing, physical dimensions, and limitations on delivery/returns of oversized items will also assist the sale. A photo alone of the item will help, as it answers some of those questions, but won’t assuage all customer concerns about sizing and fit. Sometimes the customer doesn’t want to buy. Prospective buyers might be browsing through your catalog to kill time, or just might not have the money to purchase the item! You are unlikely to provide any information in contextual support to increase the likelihood to buy if the shopper already has no intentions of doing so. The customer will still likely abandon. Ensuring that any questions are proactively answered as they browse through your site can only increase their likelihood to return and buy at a future date. Can’t Buy. Errors or complexity at checkout can be another major cause of abandonment. Good contextual support is unlikely to help with severe errors caused by technical issues on your site, but it will have a big impact on customers struggling with complexity in the checkout process and needing a question answered prior to completing the sale. Embedded support within the checkout process to patiently explain how to complete a task will help increase conversion rates. Additional Costs. Tax, shipping and other costs or duties can dramatically increase the cost of the purchase and when unexpected, can increase abandonment, particularly if they can’t be adequately explained. Again, a lack of knowledge erodes confidence in the purchase, and cost concerns in particular, erode the perception of your brand’s trustworthiness. Again, providing information on what costs are additive and why they are being levied can decrease the likelihood that the customer will abandon out of the experience. Knowledge drives confidence and confidence drives conversion. • How does one use the built in IIS URL Rewrite SEO rule that adds trailing slash only to files that exist?

  The default rule template is AddTrailingSlash. I've added another condition that allows the rule to apply to directories and not files, but I'm not sure if this is industry standard. • How do you fix "failed command: IDENTIFY DEVICE" showing up in dmesg?

  I just got a new Mushkin 60gb SSD, and it's now my primary drive in the ata1 spot. I've been getting these failed command: IDENTIFY DEVICE errors which are preventing rebooting and shutdown. Does anyone know what these could be caused by, or how to start troubleshooting? I've tried these kernels: 2.6.32-22-generic 2.6.31-17-generic And they both have the same error. • Are there any companies using BDD in a .NET environment?

  I've seen BDD in action (in this case using SpecFlow and Selenium in a .NET environment) for a small test project. I was very impressed - mainly due to the fact that the language used to specify the acceptance tests meant they engaged with the product owner much more easily. I'm now keen to bring this into my current organisation. However I'm asked 'who else uses this?' and 'show me some case-studies'. Unfortunately I cannot find any 'big names' (or even 'small names' for that matter!) of companies who are actively using BDD. I have two questions really: Is BDD adopted by companies out there? Who are they? How can BDD be implemented in an agile .NET environment and are there any significant drawbacks to doing it?

• Can't specify window's class in CCSM's Place Windows

  Following this method, I wanted to "place" some of my windows on specific viewports. For instance, I want Xchat to always start on my top right viewport (x=2, y=1). But after I have set everything up and clicked the "Close" button to validate it (I don't have any other action button, like "OK" or "Apply"), the only thing that get saved up are the viewport X and Y coordinates. The window class (in my case class=Xchat) remains empty. This bug only occurs in the "Windows with fixed viewport" section; it works well in the "Windows with fixed placement mode", for instance. How can I solve or circumvent this issue ?

• AutoVue for Mobile Asset Management

• Exposing business logic as WCF service

  I'm working on a middle-tier project which encapsulates the business logic (uses a DAL layer, and serves a web application server [ASP.net]) of a product deployed in a LAN. The BL serves as a bunch of services and data objects that are invoked upon user action. At present times, the DAL acts as a separate application whereas the BL uses it, but is consumed by the web application as a DLL. Both the DAL and the web application are deployed on different servers inside organization, and since the BL DLL is consumed by the web application, it resides in the same server. The worst thing about exposing the BL as a DLL is that we lost track with what we expose. Deployment is not such a big issue since mostly, product versions are deployed together. Would you recommend migrating from DLL to WCF service? If so, why? Do you know anyone who had a similar experience?

• Windows Phone 7 DatePicker gotcha

  The Silverlight Toolkit for Windows Phone adds some great extra controls for Windows Phone 7, one gotcha that I ran into was that the DatePicker Application Bar icons don’t show up unless you include them in your project. The problem is that your DatePicker ends up looking like this: Tim Heuer mentions this in his blog post about the Silverlight Toolkit for WP7, and as he says, it is documented in the source code: So the problem is that the icons can’t be referenced from the Silverlight Toolkit Assembly, and the solution is that you have to add them to you project in the ‘well known’ / pre-defined location of a top level folder in your project called Toolkit.Content, and you must make sure to mark the icons with a Build Action of  ‘Content’ otherwise it wont work: The result is that your DatePicker will now look like this:

With multiple cores and/or threads we need to change how we tackle problems in code. Yes we can still continue to write code to perform an action in a top down fashion to complete a task. This apprach will continue to work; however, you are not taking advantage of the extra processing power available. The best way to take advantage of the extra cores prior to .NET Framework 4.0 was to create threads and/or utilize the ThreadPool. For many developers utilizing Threads or the ThreadPool can be a little daunting.   i am trying to set up policy routing on my home server. My network looks like this: Host routed VPN gateway Internet link through VPN 192.168.0.35/24 ---> 192.168.0.5/24 ---> 192.168.0.1 DSL router 10.200.2.235/22 .... .... 10.200.0.1 VPN server The traffic from 192.168.0.32/27 should be and is routed through VPN. I wanted to define some routing policies to route some traffic from 192.168.0.5 through VPN as well - for start - from user with uid 2000. Policy routing is done using iptables mark target and ip rule fwmark. The problem: When connecting using user 2000 from 192.168.0.5 tcpdump shows outgoing packets, but nothing comes back. Traffic from 192.168.0.35 works fine (here I am not using fwmark but src policy). • Google Webmaster Tools, DNS Errors & HostPapa

  Received a message from Google Webmaster Tools: Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 40.0%. You can see more details about these errors in Webmaster Tools. Recommended action Contacted HostPapa and they deny that there is any issue with the site / server!!! Support in terms of what I can do to actually resolve this issue is non-existent!!!! The site is currently online. And I don't know much about DNS... so any advice about what I can do to resolve this problem would be much appreciated. Basically, the message from Google says that it is my webhosts fault, the message from my webhost (HostPapa) is... "Just tell google to crawl your site as there are no errors."

• Motion Sensing Fog Machine Increases Savings and Spook Factor

  This DIY add-on switches a standard fog machine from always-on to motion-activated–increase your savings and spook factor at the same time. Courtesy of tinker Greg, this modification involves a new relay and motion sensor mounted onto the existing switch of a store-bought fog machine. When the motion-sensor detects motion the fog machine releases a burst of fog for 5 seconds and then disarms itself for 10 seconds–long enough for the startled victim to move on and for the machine to recharge for the next passerby.   I've been using a little utility on my linux-based machines for years called conky.  It can be used to monitor system resources, but I wanted to modify it to monitor my WebLogic managed servers too. Once installing conky, you'll need to update the .conkyrc file.  Here is a simple example.
