• Windows OEM vs retail difference

  My laptop has an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I need to reinstall Windows, and I've made sure that disk I have downloaded is the same as the one on my system (32-bit Home Premium). Is the retail version the same as the OEM? I only have a retail copy but I have an OEM license. Will I have any problems reactivating my copy of windows? Note, my HW hasn't changed. Note: I saw this post already, but I don't have an OEM disk: Installing XP with out manufacturers original XP restore disk, possiable with OEM disk?

• Social IT guy barrier [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do you deal with people who ask you to fix their computer? Hello. Almost every person that deserves the title of being a programmer as faced the problem of persons that do not even remember the mere existence of those professionals, unless they have serious problems in their computer or some other IT related problem. May be my post will be considered off-topic, but I think it is a very important question. As Joel Spolsky says, IT guys are not Asperger geeks, and they need social life like everybody. But the people that is always asking for favors from us, can ruin deeply our social and personal life. I could experience this by myself. This fact as generated articles like http://www.lifereboot.com/2007/10-reasons-it-doesnt-pay-to-be-the-computer-guy/ and http://ecraazul.wordpress.com/2009/01/29/o-gajo-da-informatica-de-a-a-z/ (I received this one in my mailbox. It is in Portuguese, but I believe it is translated from English). Basically the idea is to criticize people that is always asking us favors. It is even more annoying if you are person very specialized in some subject and a person asks you a completely out-of-that-context question. For example, you are a VBA programmer and somebody says you to that his/her Mobile Internet Pen stopped to work five days ago and needs your help to put it working again. When you go to a doctor to fix your legs, you don't go to an ophthalmologist. You go to an orthopedist. And you pay. I don't how it works in other countries, but in Portugal being a doctor is so an overvalued job, that they earn very much money and almost nobody asks them free favors. So, my question is: what kind of social barrier (or whatever else) do you use to protect yourself from that situation?

The report is generated in the background by connecting to the BI Publisher server. The report output is stored in the Siebel File System and accessed from the My BI Publisher Reports view. • Automating and deploying new linux servers

  I'm in the process of developing a method to automate new virtual machines into my environment. 90% of our machines are virtual but the process is similar for both physical and vmware based images. What I do now is I use cobbler to install the base OS. The kickstart script has post hooks to modify the yum repo and installs puppet and func. Once the servers are running, I manually add them into nagios and sign the certificate via the puppetmaster. I've since migrated most of the resources to use mysql as the backend. I wanted to see what others are doing and my goal for 2011 is to have puppet inventory the hardware into mysql, and somehow i'll script a python script to have nagios grab the info and automatically add it for monitoring purposes. It's kind of tedious to have to add each new server into nagios, puppet's dashboard, munin, etc...

• Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. We look forward to gathering your feedback on the new adapter design! We plan to include the Observable adapter implementation into the product in a future release of Microsoft StreamInsight. • SSMS hanging without error when connecting to SQL

  Scary day for me last Thursday. I had gone up to Brisbane, and was due to speak at the Queensland SQL User Group on Thursday night. Unfortunately, disaster struck about an hour beforehand. Nothing to do with the recent floods (although we were meeting in a different location because of them). It was actually down to the fact that I’d been fiddling with my machine to get Virtual Server running on Windows 7, and SQL had finally picked up a setting from then. I could run Management Studio, but it couldn’t connect at all. No error, it just seemed to hang. One of the things you have to do to get Virtual Server installed is to tweak the Group Policy settings. I’d used gpupdate /force to get Windows to pick up the new setting, which allowed me to get Virtual Server running properly, but at the time, SQL was still using the previous settings. Finally when in Brisbane, my machine picked up the new settings, and caused me pain. Dan Benediktson describes the situation. If the SQL client picks up the wrong value out of the GetOverlappedResult API (which is required for various changes in Windows 7 behaviour), then Virtual Server can be installed, but SQL Server won’t allow connections. Yay. Luckily, it’s easy enough to change back using the Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc). Then restarting the machine (again!, as gpupdate /force didn’t cut it either, because SQL had already picked up the value), and finally I could reconnect. On Thursday I simply borrowed another machine for my talk. Today, one of my guys had seen and remembered Dan’s post. Thanks, both of you.

• Problems with Adobe Flash

  I'm running Windows 7, 64-Bit on a Core-i5 HP Notebook. For approximately the last 3 months, I've had major problems with Adobe Flash. Flash has been uninstalled and installed again multiple times. No changes. Here is what happens in different browsers: (All browsers are in the latest version as of this post) Firefox: Doesn't work at all. This bothers me most, since FF is my favorite browser; I'm using a lot of Plugins. Have tried to de-activate all Plugins, but no change. IE and Chrome: Works, but most pages with Flash are stuck during page load for ~30 seconds. After that, everything is fine. Opera: No problems, everything working as it should. Strange, eh? Any help is highly appreciated!

• Integrating with Oracle Fusion Applications: Discovering Integration Artifacts

For Fusion Applications, the use of OER has been extended to include other integration asset types such as interface tables and other technical information such as data models, tables, views, lookups, profile options, et cetera. E-Business Suite users familiar with iRepository or eTRM will recognize the functionality in Fusion Applications OER. Oracle Enterprise Repository for Fusion Applications provides a common catalog of technical information, searchable using many different mechanisms. • Force Blank TextBox with ASP.Net MVC Html.TextBox

  I recently ran into a problem with the following scenario: I have data with a parent/child data with a one-to-many relationship from the parent to the child. I want to be able to update parent and existing child data AND add a new child record all in a single post. I don't want to create a model just to store the new values. One of the things I LOVE about MVC is how flexible it is in dealing with posted data.  If you have data that isn't in your model, you can simply use the non-strongly-typed HTML helper extensions and pass the data into your actions as parameters or use the FormCollection.  I thought this would give me the solution I was looking for.  I simply used Html.TextBox("NewChildKey") and Html.TextBox("NewChildValue") and added parameters to my action to take the new values.  So here is what my action looked like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult EditParent(int? id, string newChildKey, string newChildValue, FormCollection forms) {     Model model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);     if (model != null)     {         if (TryUpdateModel(model))         {             if (ModelState.IsValid)             {                 model = ModelDataHelper.UpdateModel(model);             }             string[] keys = forms.GetValues("ChildKey");             string[] values = forms.GetValues("ChildValue");             ModelDataHelper.UpdateChildData(id ?? 0, keys, values);             ModelDataHelper.AddChildData(id ?? 0, newChildKey, newChildValue);             model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);         }        return View(report);     }    return new EmptyResult(); } The only problem with this is that MVC is TOO smart.  Even though I am not using a model to store the new child values, MVC still passes the values back to the text boxes via the model state.  The fix for this is simple but not necessarily obvious, simply remove the data from the model state before returning the view: ModelState.Remove("NewChildKey"); ModelState.Remove("NewChildValue"); Two lines of code to save a lot of headaches.

  I don't get it. WTF do people see in this? I'm trying to figure it out, but I can't. Have you seen what people post? Let's use Jeff Atwood as an example. What does he gain by posting (with disturbing frequency) all those, well... posts (I find the term "tweets" disgusting). What is a "follower" supposed to get from these posts? I know many of you are thinking, "Just don't use it!". Yes, I know I don't have to use it, but it's like asking me not to look at the space shuttle that just crashed in my front yard. The rest of the world thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm just trying to understand what people see in it.

• Disk failure is imminent Laptop Hard drive ~5 months old

  There's another post about this, but I don't have enough 'points' to say anything on that thread. So I'll start my own ... with more details! My computer still boots, but gnome domain reports problems with HDD smart. This has been confirmed in the bios as it makes me press f1 to boot up now. I tried running HDD disk check in the bios, but it fails running the tests. As in, running the tests failed not that the tests themselves indicated a failed drive. • Interesting sessions/tips from RMOUG

  One of the sessions I was at at last week's RMOUG was a session on Temp Tablespace Groups. I had a look because I had no experience with this and it seemed to help with parallel processing and the allocation/usage of temp. You can read the excellent write-up at Kellyn Pedersen's blog - who did the session and all the work - here. So for all of those who may be seeing lot's of waits like enq: TS - Contention when you are doing hash joins and sorts, do have a look at the above blog post. I also had the chance to listen in at Stewart Bryson's session on Restartability (he had 3 R-s) where he gave very useful tips about how to deal with your data warehouse loads. Questions like archive log mode - should I or should I not were well covered. Flashback archives, also nice to hear about. Very nice talk, very interesting. Unfortunately he hasn't blogged about it yes, so no pointers to that one. Got to see a couple of other interesting sessions, and as conferences go got to meet some interesting Oracle folks from the region. As usual RMOUG was useful and fun. Off to the drawing boards to design next year's session!

• Missing z-axis rotation for transforming between two vectors

  I'm trying to rotate a cube so that it's facing up, but am getting hung up on the final implementation details. It now reliably will rotate the x,y axis to the correct side, but the z-axis is never rotating (See photos of before and after rotation). When I'm using the code below I always get '0' for my rotationVector.z. • Should I go with OpenGL to see my future in Game Development industry? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Should I continue studying OpenGL or just switch to DirectX to give me a better chance of landing a job in the game industry? I tried Google but found quite old articles, so I am in search of an answer in context to year 2012. Hi all, I don't know if you will consider this question appropriate for this community but I am constantly searching for a perfect answer. What I have seen is that most of the games that are released these days are DirectX 1x based. Except for few games like Starcraft or Diablo which don't have high end graphics are using OpenGL. So I have few questions to ask. The platforms i would like to target are PC (windows), Xbox 360 and PS3 (must). Should I go with learning OpenGL to see my future in game development industry? Or should I shift to Directx? If I learn OpenGL first, will it be difficult to learn direcx then? Which API is most suitable for indie development? Which one of the two API's are better from coder's (programmer's) point of view? Like OOP and style of coding. Is openGL being cross platform should be the only reason to choose it over Directx? Even when vendors are not providing enough stable drivers for it. Thanks in advance. I have read this post, but I have few questions. • Unable to mount smb share. "Please select another viewer and try again". Please help. Serious smb/nautilus foo needed

  This don't think this is the typical, "I can't mount a windows share" post. I am using stock Ubuntu 12.04. I am pretty sure this is a Nautilus issue, but I have reached a dead end. I have one share that I can't mount using smb://server/share via nautilus. I get the following error. Error: Failed to mount Windows share Please select another viewer and try again I can mount this share from other machines(non-ubuntu) using the same credentials so I know I have perms on the destination share. I can mount other shares on other servers from my Ubuntu box so I am pretty sure I have all the smb packages I need on my Ubuntu box. To make thing more interesting, if I use smbclient from the command line, I mount this share with no problems from my Ubuntu box. So here's what we know: destination share perms are ok (no problem accessing from other machines) smb is setup correctly on Ubuntu box (access other windows shares no problem) I only get the error when using nautilus smbclient in terminal works, no problem Any help would be greatly appreciated. Googling turned up simple mount/perms issues, and I don't think that is what is going on here. Let me know if you need more information. Hugh

• IIS7.5 Windows Authentication missing providers menu item (ntlm)

  I'm trying to enable NTLM authentication on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine with IIS 7.5 for a specific file in my web root. I've been following these instructions http://docs.moodle.org/en/NTLM_authentication#IIS_Configuration In the IIS Manager I open the Authentication module, disable anonymous authentication and enable Windows Authentication however according to every post I can find on the matter I should have a 'providers' option appear but I don't. I've double checked in Server Manager that the 'Windows Authentication' security feature is enabled for IIS. Any help anyone can offer would be great, Thank you!

• How can I diagnose a "502 Bad Gateway" response from an Apache/Tomcat configuration?

  I just finished up configuring a fairly default configuration of Tomcat. My Apache configuration was pre-existing and post-tomcat it still has no issues. I am using mod_jk to (if I am saying this correctly) interface between Apache and Tomcat and have my conf files setup for my workers, etc. I put my test file (Simply: http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-4.1-doc/appdev/sample/web/hello.jsp) into my tomcat/webapps/ directory and then call it via http://localhost/test/hello.jsp. From here Apache returns a "502 Bad Gateway" response. I confirmed this via the Apache logs, but beyond that I have no idea how to diagnose the issue. I assume the 502 is because Tomcat did not respond. I'd like to confirm if Tomcat received the request, but cannot locate the log file. At this point I had thought my installation was complete, so not sure where to go from here. Any input would be appreciated.

• URGENT: Need a Company to Fix My Plesk & IIS on windows 2008

  Hello: I need to know a name of a company to fix my server install and get my sites running again. Windows 2008 IIS 7 Plesk 9.x The problem started when Level 2 of my hosting company adjusted a FTP users to have certain permissions....apparently he did this outside of plesk and it has been nothing but permission headaches all around. Connections....uploading files, etc. now somethings gone wrong where plesk isnt even loading properly and IIS too... I need to see if someone can fix this remotely before I give the green light to format and reinstall server, IIS, Plesk and Domains! looking to pay a company to get this working ASAP - This is not requested as a free job so I need someone good and who can fix it without the huge hassle of formatting and such.
