• I can I separate multiple logical pages in a text file I create in Perl?

  So far, I've been successful with generating output to individual files by opening a file for output as part of outer loop and closing it after all output is written. I had used a counting variable ($x) and appended .txt onto it to create a filename, and had written it to the same directory as my perl script. I want to step the code up a bit, prompt for a file name from the user, open that file once and only once, and write my output one "printed letter" per page. Is this possible in plain text? From what I understand, chr(12) is an ascii line feed character and will get me close to what I want, but is there a better way? • On saving a new record an associated id changes to 9 figure number

  Hi, I have a table of venues, with each venue belonging to an area and a type. I recently dropped the table and added to it some addressline fields. I have re-migrated it but now the area_id field saves as a random? 9 figure number. Both the area_id and venuetype_id integers are created in the same way from the create new form and the venuetype_id saves as normal but not the area_id. • 'Good' programming form in maintaining / updating / accessing files by entry

  Basic Question: If I'm storying/modifying data, should I access elements of a file by index hard-coded index, i.e. targetFile.getElement(5); via a hardcoded identifier (internally translated into index), i.e. target.getElementWithID("Desired Element"), or with some intermediate DESIRED_ELEMENT = 5; ... target.getElement(DESIRED_ELEMENT), etc. Background: My program (c++) stores data in lots of different 'dataFile's. I also keep a list of all of the data-files in another file---a 'listFile'---which also stores some of each one's properties (see below, but i.e. what it's name is, how many lines of information it has etc.). There is an object which manages the data files and the list file, call it a 'fileKeeper'. The entries of a listFile look something like: filename , contents name , number of lines , some more numbers ... Its definitely possible that I may add / remove fields from this list --- but in general, they'll stay static. Right now, I have a constant string array which holds the identification of each element in each entry, something like: const string fileKeeper::idKeys[] = { "FileName" , "Contents" , "NumLines" ... }; const int fileKeeper::idKeysNum = 6; // 6 - for example I'm trying to manage this stuff in 'good' programatic form. Thus, when I want to retrieve the number of lines in a file (for example), instead of having a method which just retrieves the '3'rd element... Instead I do something like: string desiredID = "NumLines"; int desiredIndex = indexForID(desiredID); string desiredElement = elementForIndex(desiredIndex); where the function indexForID() goes through the entries of idKeys until it finds desiredID then returns the index it corresponds to. And elementForIndex(index) actually goes into the listFile to retrieve the index'th element of the comma-delimited string. Problem: This still seems pretty ugly / poor-form. Is there a way I should be doing this? If not, what are some general ways in which this is usually done? Thanks!

  I am building an application with Codeigniter and need some help with a DB query. I have a table called users with the following fields: user_id, user_name, user_password, user_email, user_role, user_manager_id In my app, I pull all records from the user table using the following: function get_clients() { $this->db->select('*'); $this->db->where('user_role', 'client'); $this->db->order_by("user_name", "Asc"); $query = $this->db->get("users"); return $query->result_array(); } This works as expected, however when I display the results in the view, I also want to display a new column called Manager which will display the managers user_name field. The user_manager_id is the id of the user from the same table. Im guessing you can create an outer join on the same table but not sure. • 4 table query / join. getting duplicate rows

  So I have written a query that will grab an order (this is for an ecommerce type site), and from that order id it will get all order items (ecom_order_items), print options (c_print_options) and images (images). The eoi_p_id is currently a foreign key from the images table. This works fine and the query is: SELECT eoi_parentid, eoi_p_id, eoi_po_id, eoi_quantity, i_id, i_parentid, po_name, po_price FROM ecom_order_items, images, c_print_options WHERE eoi_parentid = '1' AND i_id = eoi_p_id AND po_id = eoi_po_id; The above would grab all the stuff I need for order #1 Now to complicate things I added an extra table (ecom_products), which needs to act in a similar way to the images table. The eoi_p_id can also point at a foreign key in this table too. I have added an extra field 'eoi_type' which will either have the value 'image', or 'product'. Now items in the order could be made up of a mix of items from images or ecom_products. Whatever I try it either ends up with too many records, wont actually output any with eoi_type = 'product', and just generally wont work. Any ideas on how to achieve what I am after? Can provide SQL samples if needed? • Are python list comprehensions always a good programming practice?

  To make the question clear, I'll use a specific example. I have a list of college courses, and each course has a few fields (all of which are strings). The user gives me a string of search terms, and I return a list of courses that match all of the search terms. This can be done in a single list comprehension or a few nested for loops. Here's the implementation. First, the Course class: class Course: def __init__(self, date, title, instructor, ID, description, instructorDescription, *args): self.date = date self.title = title self.instructor = instructor self.ID = ID self.description = description self.instructorDescription = instructorDescription self.misc = args Every field is a string, except misc, which is a list of strings. Here's the search as a single list comprehension. courses is the list of courses, and query is the string of search terms, for example "history project". def searchCourses(courses, query): terms = query.lower().strip().split() return tuple(course for course in courses if all( term in course.date.lower() or term in course.title.lower() or term in course.instructor.lower() or term in course.ID.lower() or term in course.description.lower() or term in course.instructorDescription.lower() or any(term in item.lower() for item in course.misc) for term in terms)) You'll notice that a complex list comprehension is difficult to read. I implemented the same logic as nested for loops, and created this alternative: def searchCourses2(courses, query): terms = query.lower().strip().split() results = [] for course in courses: for term in terms: if (term in course.date.lower() or term in course.title.lower() or term in course.instructor.lower() or term in course.ID.lower() or term in course.description.lower() or term in course.instructorDescription.lower()): break for item in course.misc: if term in item.lower(): break else: continue break else: continue results.append(course) return tuple(results) That logic can be hard to follow too. I have verified that both methods return the correct results. Both methods are nearly equivalent in speed, except in some cases. I ran some tests with timeit, and found that the former is three times faster when the user searches for multiple uncommon terms, while the latter is three times faster when the user searches for multiple common terms. Still, this is not a big enough difference to make me worry. So my question is this: which is better? Are list comprehensions always the way to go, or should complicated statements be handled with nested for loops? Or is there a better solution altogether?

  I'm storing expanded SVN keyword literals for .cpp files in 'static char const *const' class members and want to store the .h descriptions as similarly as possible. In short, I need to guarantee single instantiation of a static member (presumably in a .cpp file) to an auto-generated non-integer literal living in a potentially shared .h file. Unfortunately the language makes no attempt to resolve multiple instantiations resulting from assignments made outside class definitions and explicitly forbids non-integer inits inside class definitions. My best attempt (using static-wrapping internal classes) is not too dirty, but I'd really like to do better. I get why the language shirks the whole resolution issue, but it'd be very convenient if an inverted extern member qualifier were provided, where the definition code was visible in class definitions to any caller but only actually invoked at the point of a single special declaration elsewhere. • Help Desk Database Design

  The company I work at has very specific and unique needs for a help desk system, so none of the open source systems will work for us. That being the case, I created a custom system using PHP and MySQL. It's far from perfect, but it's infinitely better than the last system they were using; trust me! It meets most of our needs quite nicely, but I have a question about the way I have the database set up. Here are the main tables: ClosedTickets ClosedTicketSolutions Locations OpenTickets OpenTicketSolutions Statuses Technicians When a user submits a help request, it goes in the "OpenTickets" table. As the technicians work on the problem, they submit entries with a description of what they've done. These entries go in the "OpenTicketSolutions" table. When the problem has been resolved, the last technician to work on the problem closes the ticket and it gets moved to the "ClosedTickets" table. All of the solution entries get moved to the "ClosedTicketSolutions" table as well. The other tables (Locations, Statuses, and Technicians) exist as a means of normalization (each location, status, and technician has an ID which is referenced). The problem I'm having now is this: When I want to view a list of all the open tickets, the SQL statement is somewhat complicated because I have to left join the "Locations", "Statuses", and "Technicians" tables. Fields from various tables need to be searchable as well. I don't think a union would work in my case. So I'm wondering if I should store the open and closed tickets in the same table and just have a field indicating whether or not the ticket is closed. The only problem I can forsee is that we have so many closed tickets already (nearly 30,000) so the whole system might perform slowly. Would it be a bad idea to combine the open and closed tickets?

• Encapsulating a Windows.Forms.Button

  I want to define a special kind of button that only allows two possible labels: "ON" and "OFF". I decided to inherit from a Windows.Forms.Button to implement this but now I don't know I how should enforce this rule. Should I just override the Text property like this? public override string Text { set { throw new InvalidOperationException("Invalid operation on StartStopButton!"); } } The problem I see with this is that I am breaking the contract that all buttons should have. If any code tries something like foreach (Button button in myForm) { button.Text = "123"; } they will get an Exception if I have any of my special buttons on the form, which is something that isn't expectable. First, because people think of properties just as "public" variables, not methods, second, because they are used to using and setting whatever they want to buttons without having to worry with Exceptions. Should I instead just make the set property do nothing? That could also lead to awkward results: myButton.Text = "abc"; MessageBox.Show(abc); //not "abc"! The general idea from the OO world is to in this kind of cases use Composition instead of inheritance. public class MySpecialButton : <Some class from System.Windows.Forms that already knows how to draw itself on forms> private Button button = new Button(); //I'd just draw this button on this class //and I'd then only show the fields I consider //relevant to the outside world. ... } But to make the Button "live" on a form it must inherit from some special class. I've looked on Control, but it seems to already have the Text property defined. I guess the ideal situation would be to inherit from some kind of class that wouldn't even have the Text property defined, but that'd have position, size, etc properties available. Upper in the hierarchy, after Control, we have Component, but that looks like a really raw class. Any clue about how to achieve this? I know this was a long post :( Thanks

  I must be missing something obvious, but everything that I've tried for this is leaving me empty handed, so I'm a bit puzzled. I'm attempting to use the jQuery validation plugin with custom validation methods, but it seems to be hit or miss. It seems that I am able to successfully add rules to a certain extent, but some of the methods are not applied. Or the specified method is not applied, and the incorrect method is instead applied.   I currently have 5 tables in MySQL database. Some of them share foreign keys and are interdependent of each other. I am displaying classes accordingly to their majors. Each class is taught during the fall, spring or all_year. In my database I have a table named semester which has an id, year, and semester fields. The semester field in particular is a tinyint that has three values 0, 1, 2. This signifies the fall, spring or all_year. When I display the query instead of having it show 0 or 1 or 2 can I have it show fall, spring etc? Extra: How can I add space to the end of each loop so the data doesn't look clustered? • Entity Framework: An object with the same key already exists in the objectstatemanager

  I see that this question has been asked a lot, however I haven't found anything yet that solves the problem I'm having. Obviously i'm using the Entity Framework to perform an update to a record. Once the updates are complete, however, whenever I try to save I get the following error message: An object with the same key already exists in the objectstatemanager At first I was passing in a collection object from the view that contained a copy of the the ZipCodeTerritory model object zipToUpdate. I changed the code by pulling this object out and just sending in the relevant fields instead. However, I'm still getting the same error. What's also weird is the first time I run this code, it works fine. Any attempt after that I get the error. Since I am working on already available data, where in empFamilyDob was not mandatory. But now it is being made mandatory, the previous data doesn't contain EmpFamilyDob. So naturally I have added this new property EmpFamilyDob to the Model and made it required through DataAnnotations. Now there are two set of views to be developed. 1. A view which simply allows to collect the employee information without employee family information. i.e, empFamilyName and EmpFamilyDob.--This view is used by the Hr section to insert empplyee details Since the empFamilyname and EmpFamilyDob being now made mandatory, some other section will edit the data and update the EmpFamilyName and EmpFamilyDob as and when the information about employee family details are received. I have action controller for CreateNew and Edit Which is being generated by using the default model. There are two user actions being performed. 1.When the user clicks the Create new -- he will be able to update only the Employee information 2.As and when the other section receives the employee family details they update the familyname and family date of birth. i.e, EmployeeFamilyname and EmployeFamilyDob. While creating new record the uses should be able to update employee information only and while editing the information he should be able to update the employeefamily information. Since I have a single view with most of these fields as required and not allowing null , How can I achieve this in a sincle view? • Indexing on only part of a field in MongoDB

  Is there a way to create an index on only part of a field in MongoDB, for example on the first 10 characters? I couldn't find it documented (or asked about on here). The MySQL equivalent would be CREATE INDEX part_of_name ON customer (name(10));. Reason: I have a collection with a single field that varies in length from a few characters up to over 1000 characters, average 50 characters. As there are a hundred million or so documents it's going to be hard to fit the full index in memory (testing with 8% of the data the index is already 400MB, according to stats). Indexing just the first part of the field would reduce the index size by about 75%. In most cases the search term is quite short, it's not a full-text search. A work-around would be to add a second field of 10 (lowercased) characters for each item, index that, then add logic to filter the results if the search term is over ten characters (and that extra field is probably needed anyway for case-insensitive searches, unless anybody has a better way). Seems like an ugly way to do it though. [added later] I tried adding the second field, containing the first 12 characters from the main field, lowercased. It wasn't a big success. Previously, the average object size was 50 bytes, but I forgot that includes the _id and other overheads, so my main field length (there was only one) averaged nearer to 30 bytes than 50. Then, the second field index contains the _id and other overheads. Net result (for my 8% sample) is the index on the main field is 415MB and on the 12 byte field is 330MB - only a 20% saving in space, not worthwhile. I could duplicate the entire field (to work around the case insensitive search problem) but realistically it looks like I should reconsider whether MongoDB is the right tool for the job (or just buy more memory and use twice as much disk space). [added even later] This is a typical document, with the source field, and the short lowercased field: { "_id" : ObjectId("505d0e89f56588f20f000041"), "q" : "Continental Airlines", "f" : "continental " } Indexes: db.test.ensureIndex({q:1}); db.test.ensureIndex({f:1}); The 'f" index, working on a shorter field, is 80% of the size of the "q" index. I didn't mean to imply I included the _id in the index, just that it needs to use that somewhere to show where the index will point to, so it's an overhead that probably helps explain why a shorter key makes so little difference. Access to the index will be essentially random, no part of it is more likely to be accessed than any other. Total index size for the full file will likely be 5GB, so it's not extreme for that one index. Adding some other fields for other search cases, and their associated indexes, and copies of data for lower case, does start to add up, which I why I started looking into a more concise index.

• Can I use accepts_nested_attributes_for with checkboxes in a _form to select potential 'links' from a list

  In Rails 3: I have the following models: class System has_many :input_modes # name of the table with the join in it has_many :imodes, :through => :input_modes, :source => 'mode', :class_name => "Mode" has_many :output_modes has_many :omodes, :through => :output_modes, :source => 'mode', :class_name => 'Mode' end class InputMode # OutputMode is identical belongs_to :mode belongs_to :system end class Mode ... fields, i.e. name ... end That works nicely and I can assign lists of Modes to imodes and omodes as intended. What I'd like to do is use accepts_nested_attributes_for or some other such magic in the System model and build a view with a set of checkboxes. The set of valid Modes for a given System is defined elsewhere. I'm using checkboxes in the _form view to select which of the valid modes is actually set in imodes and omodes . I don't want to create new Modes from this view, just select from a list of pre-defined Modes. Below is what I'm currently using in my _form view. It generates a list of checkboxes, one for each allowed Mode for the System being edited. If the checkbox is ticked then that Mode is to be included in the imodes list. <% @allowed_modes.each do |mode| %> <li> <%= check_box_tag :imode_ids, mode.id, @system.imodes.include?(modifier), :name => 'imode_ids[]' %> <%= mode.name %> </li> <% end %> Which passes this into the controller in params: { ..., "imode_ids"=>["2", "14"], ... } In the controller#create I extract and assign the Modes that had their corresponding checkboxes ticked and add them to imodes with the following code: @system = System.new(params[:system]) # Note the the empty list that makes sure we clear the # list if none of the checkboxes are ticked if params.has_key?(:imode_ids) imodes = Mode.find(params[:imode_ids]) else imodes = [] end @system.imodes = imodes Once again that all works nicely but I'll have to copy that cludgey code into the other methods in the controller and I'd much prefer to use something more magical if possible. I feel like I've passed off the path of nice clean rails code and into the forest of "hacking around" rails; it works but I don't like it. What should I have done?

  I'm probably doing this completely wrong (the unhaskell way); I'm just learning so please let me know if there's a better way to approach this. Context: I'm writing a bunch of tree structures. I want to reuse my prettyprint function for binary trees. Not all trees can use the generic Node/Branch data type though; different trees need different extra data. So to reuse the prettyprint function I thought of creating a class different trees would be instances of: class GenericBinaryTree a where is_leaf :: a -> Bool left :: a -> a node :: a -> b right :: a -> a This way they only have to implement methods to retrieve the left, right, and current node value, and prettyprint doesn't need to know about the internal structure. Then I get down to here: prettyprint_helper :: GenericBinaryTree a => a -> [String] prettyprint_helper tree | is_leaf tree = [] | otherwise = ("{" ++ (show (node tree)) ++ "}") : (prettyprint_subtree (left tree) (right tree)) where prettyprint_subtree left right = ((pad "+- " "| ") (prettyprint_helper right)) ++ ((pad "`- " " ") (prettyprint_helper left)) pad first rest = zipWith (++) (first : repeat rest) And I get the Ambiguous type variable 'a0' in the constraint: (Show a0) arising from a use of 'show' error for (show (node tree)) Here's an example of the most basic tree data type and instance definition (my other trees have other fields but they're irrelevant to the generic prettyprint function) data Tree a = Branch (Tree a) a (Tree a) | Leaf instance GenericBinaryTree (Tree a) where is_leaf Leaf = True is_leaf _ = False left (Branch left node right) = left right (Branch left node right) = right node (Branch left node right) = node I could have defined node :: a -> [String] and deal with the stringification in each instance/type of tree, but this feels neater. In terms of prettyprint, I only need a string representation, but if I add other generic binary tree functions later I may want the actual values. So how can I write this to work whether the node value is an instance of Show or not? Or what other way should I be approaching this problem? In an object oriented language I could easily check whether a class implements something, or if an object has a method. I can't use something like prettyprint :: Show a => a -> String Because it's not the tree that needs to be showable, it's the value inside the tree (returned by function node) that needs to be showable. I also tried changing node to Show b => a -> b without luck (and a bunch of other type class/preconditions/whatever/I don't even know what I'm doing anymore).
