• mCrypt not present after Ubuntu upgrade to 13.10

  After I have upgraded my system from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 several problems have occurred with apache, mysql and php configurations. I solved most of them but I can't seem to get mCrypt library working. Package is installed so i don't need to apt-get it. Server works and everything seems fine, but when I try to run php artisan serve with Laravel 4, I get a message that mCrypt is required. I did php --ri mcrypt and the output was Extension 'mcrypt' not present. I have tried putting extension=mcrypt.so to /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini but it didn't worked. Any ideas?

• Why can't there be an "ultimate" programming language? [closed]

  There is an uncountable sum of programming languages out there. They obviously all have their pro's and con's - but why can't there be one to "beat them all"? The main part of a programming language is it's syntax and what's possible with it. The rest are usually only a bunch of libraries, frameworks and extensions wrapped around it. So couldn't you combine all the great aspects and experiences gained from the thousands of programming languages out there to build one with a syntax that fits every task? Wouldn't it be better having only one programming language? I see only problems with the current amount of the ones in use. Why can't there be a perfect language when thinking of syntax, constructs and typing?

  I am a regex newbie and can't seem to figure this one out. The entire string can only be 16 characters long. I am pretty sure I am missing something obvious here regarding the leading zeros. Tried the NTS format and running into the same sort of problems.

• Android animation doesn't work, probably some kind of screen redraw problem.

  I have created a custom component in my program by extending a ViewGroup. This component listens to touch events and are supposed to start animations when the user has move their finger past some certain points. I'm able to start animations while the user is touching the screen. But I'm not able to start animations if the user doesn't move their finger. It's probably that the phone thinks it doesn't have to update the screen if the user isn't moving their finger. I added some logs and according to them the animation starts and ends but it doesn't draw on the screen. I have the same problems when starting an animation with a timer. I use AlphaAnimations and TranslateAnimations on ImageViews. I have tried to use invalidate() both on the component and the ImageView but it doesn't help. Anyone who has an idea how to solve this?

• Maven easyb plugin java heap space settings?

  Hi, I attempted to change my heap size for maven easyb plugin http://www.easyb.org/maven-easyb-plugin/. In my easyb test I added standard code to print the heap size using the code Runtime.getFreeMemory() and Runtime.getTotalMemory(). I tried setting the MAVEN_OPTS=-Xmx1024m -Xms1024m and also set the maven opts in Maven surefire plugin. Now when I run the same class from the Junit I can see the getTotalMemory() displaying a number close 1Gig but the when the same classes are invoked from easyb plugin they do not reflect the memory size. Shouldn't there be a way of passing JVM opts to maven easyb plugin when it runs these easyb tests? At the very minimum it should atleast pick up the MAVEN_OPTS settings from the environment. Has someone bumped into problems like this? (A search on this group's archive does not reveal much)

  Hi Team, I have an interesting database design problem that I formulated while travelling by a bus, coming back from my home. Design a normalized database for a bus ticketing system (not reservation system). In each trip, the conductor of the bus will give tickets to its passengers after collecting fare from them. Passengers travel from a various source places to various destination places. The system must be able to give a report of the places for which the number of passengers was more than 2. Suppose the stops for the bus are L1,L2, L3 and L4 Suppose passenger P1 travels from L1 to L4. P2 travels from L2 to L4. P3 travels from L3 to L4. The report should list only (L3-L4) for which it has more than 2 travelers. Can you please help me to solve the following problems 1) Design a normalized database 2) Write a query for the report 3) Is there any site that gives these kinds of interesting database design questions and answers? • Using R to open grib files

  I am using R to work with meteorological data. I proceed in two steps: 1- convert grib to netcdf using the commande line function ncl_convert2nc from ncar command language 2- use package ncdf in R to import the netcdf data. I have two problems: 1- I would like to do automatic treatment of many files within R. Can I call ncl_convert2nc within R ? 2- For some particular grib files, the convertion with ncar tool does not work. Is there other ways or trick (other than transcription into netcdf) to read grib files in R ?

• How to Get SharePoint PowerShell to use .NET 2

  I'm having a couple of problems with PowerShell. First, the PS configuration installed by SharePoint 2010 keeps popping this message: The local farm is not accessible. Cmdlets with FeatureDependencyId are not registered. I've googled that, and given everybody and their second cousin Sharepoint_Shell_Access to the config DB, with no luck. So, I wanted to try some of the PS commands. In this case, however, I'm getting a different error: Microsoft SharePoint is not supported with version 4.0.30319.17929 of the Microsoft .Net Runtime. I get that SP can't use .NET 4.0 or 4.5, but I can't find any suggestions on how to get PS to use the "right" version of .NET. I've found some references for something called PowerGUI, and changing the psgui.exe.config, but I don't have that. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to solve the .NET version problem? • Extra space while installing .msi

  I have extra space in my custom made .msi. The data to be installed has about 600MB and the installer says it needs 1.4 GB.Switching to a different location then the predetermined one (e.g from C:\Program Files\My_App to F:\My_App) shows that it always need approximately 800 MB on the Windows partition, which is in my case the extra space. Any thoughts on why is this happening? Also can this cause an installation error on a 64-bit OS? I've only installed it on a 32-bit OS and everything is fine, but one of my colleagues is having problems installing it on the above mentioned type.

• Error using \Glsentrytext{} in section title.

  When using the glossaries package in a LaTeX document I occasionally want to use a glossary entry as part of section or chapter title. For example: \section{\Glsentrytext{big}} This however results in an error. Trying to use \protect\Glsentrytext{} does not solve the the problem. Note that using the non-capitalized version (\glsentrytext) does not produce any problems. Does anyone know of a way to get this to work? I use the glossaries package occasionally as way to format specific strings in a consistent way. For example \gls{big} turns into 'beam-into-gas'. Obviously I could create two glossary entries, with and without caps, to achieve this and only include one in the final glossary. That is an ugly solution though.

• Getting Emacs ansi-term and Zsh to play nicely

  I've been trying to use Zsh within my emacs session, without emacs remapping all the Zsh keys. I found ansi-term works pretty well for this but, I'm still having some problems. I was getting lots of junk characters outputted with, I was able to fix it with: ## Setup proper term information for emacs ansi-term mode [[ $TERM == eterm-color ]] && export TERM=xterm But everything still doesn't work perfectly. Now I am having trouble with output being drawn offscreen , especially when using something like C-r for search. Any thoughts. Anyone else have Zsh + Ansi-term working properly?

  Some problems that I recall (there may be more): Includes regions Does not use this. prefix for member variables and methods Includes comments like the one below ( having // by itself catches the eye of StyleCop) // // fileNameTextBox // If I make a change to the text, and then open the designer again, and screws up my previously perfected fruits of hard labor. • Getting list of all existing vtables.

  In my application I have quite some void-pointers (this is because of historical reasons, application was originally written in pure C). In one of my modules I know that the void-pointers points to instances of classes that could inherit from a known base class, but I cannot be 100% sure of it. Therefore, doing a dynamic_cast on the void-pointer might give problems. Possibly, the void-pointer even points to a plain-struct (so no vptr in the struct). I would like to investigate the first 4 bytes of the memory the void-pointer is pointing to, to see if this is the address of the valid vtable. I know this is platform, maybe even compiler-version-specific, but it could help me in moving the application forward, and getting rid of all the void-pointers over a limited time period (let's say 3 years). Is there a way to get a list of all vtables in the application, or a way to check whether a pointer points to a valid vtable, and whether that instance pointing to the vtable inherits from a known base class?

  From my perspective, we're constructing our own 'flavour' of NAnt/Ivy/CruiseControl.Net in-house and can't help but get the feeling that other dev shops are doing exactly the same work, but then everybody is finding out the same problems and pitfalls with it. I'm not complaining about NAnt, Ivy or CruiseControl at all, as they've been brilliant in helping our team of developers become more sure of the quality of their code, but it just seems strange that these tools are very popular, yet we're all re-inventing the CI-wheel. Is there a pre-made solution for building .Net applications, using the tools mentioned above?

  Hi guys, I'm completely confused, frustrated and nothing seems to make sense and work any more. I' dev some iframe fb app and i've been using the javascript sdk (FB.Init()) to get the access_token, but doesn't always work, sometimes i'm already logged into FB and doesn't works... Did some reading, and read also that there is problems using cookies in iframes in Opera and IE, so I was thinking in use the OAuth 2.0 but i'm not sure how via facebook sdk c# and now I'm now completely lost, don't know if i still need to use the javascript FB.Init(). Documentation out there is poor and unclear, a lot of stuff refers to old code, and after hours of reading, jumping on examples, i'm completely messed up and confused.   is it good practice to use iframe to implement header/navbar? my website is basically 5 thousand pages but all static html (not using any content manager, php, etc.). am in the process to add a navbar at the top of each page. e.g. tabs, or crumbs, or any sort of header with js menu. (the exact design not decided yet) my question is, is it good practice to use a iframe for this? (so, instead have same text repeated in all 5 thousand pages, each will just have a short iframe pointing to a header file) am aware that one should reduce http request for speed, but this is ok with me. Any other problems i might have with this? SEO or any tech issue?

• CodeIgnitor is generating multiple sessions in the database, why?

  Ive got a site that does a few ajax calls on page load, now for some reason, codeIgnitor is inserting 4 sessions (I'm assuming for each ajax call) as you load the page. I'm storing the sessions in the database. I'm pretty sure there should only be one session per browser? FF seems to only generate one, other browsers seem to create a whole bunch of sessions. Multiple sessions for the same user are giving me some serious authentication problems. any ideas?

  I'm setting up some simple url rewriting rules using mod_rewrite and a .htacces file, but I've got some problems. If I set up the .htacces this way: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule /index.html /index.php [L] when I call from the browser this url: http://localhost/~dave/mySite/index.html I got a 404 error. Using this .htacces instead Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule /index.html http://localhost/~dave/mySite/index.php [L] everything works fine and I get the index.php page I'm expecting. Am I forced to user absolute urls as the target of a rewrite? Is this a Apache configuration problem? I'm using Max OS X 10.6.2 with its standard Apache installation.

  I have a Bash script that is working on my OpenSuSE box, but when copied across to my Ubuntu box, is not working. The script reads in from a file. • Python BeautifulSoup Print Info in CSV

  I can print the information I am pulling from a site with no problem. But when I try to place the street names in one column and the zipcodes into another column into a CSV file that is when I run into problems. All I get in the CSV is the two column names and every thing in its own column across the page. Here is my code.
