• Transparent Background with a Modal UIViewController

  I have a dilema, I want to present to the user a semi-transparent view. I found out by experimenting that if I simply pushed the transparent view to the top of my NavigationController's stack, that it would not render the transparency level I wanted. So I decided to simply add the view as a subview of the current view at the top of the stack. This solution works, the view below is still visible, and the View is 'semi-modal'. The problem is, if the parent view inherits from UITableViewController (as mine does), then the view I 'push' onto it, does not cover the navigation bar at the top. I really don't want to get into a situation where I am forced to enable / disable controls on the navigation bar every time I push this view, so I was wondering, if anyone knew of any solutions that I could use so that the view I push onto the UITableViewController will actually 'push over' the navigation bar?

• Best practices: Sending email on behalf of users

  The company I work for provides testing services for the healthcare industry. As part of our services, we need to send email to our clients' employees. Typically, these are temp, part-time, or contract employees, and so have private email addresses (eg Hotmail, GMail, Yahoo!, etc). Up to now, we've been sending from an internal address, but this means that replies come back to us when employees aren't paying attention or don't know to send queries to our clients. I'd like to change this, so that the person who requests that the email is sent is the person that is replied to. We've used reply-to: in the past, but it seemed to cause additional mail to be trapped by spam filters. I've been reading about sender: and on-behalf-of: headers, and was wondering what the current best-practice was for sending email in a scenario where we need to send email such that the reply goes to a domain we don't control.

• Signals and threads - good or bad design decision?

  I have to write a program that performs highly computationally intensive calculations. The program might run for several days. The calculation can be separated easily in different threads without the need of shared data. I want a GUI or a web service that informs me of the current status. My current design uses BOOST::signals2 and BOOST::thread. It compiles and so far works as expected. If a thread finished one iteration and new data is available it calls a signal which is connected to a slot in the GUI class. My question(s): Is this combination of signals and threads a wise idea? I another forum somebody advised someone else not to "go down this road". Are there potential deadly pitfalls nearby that I failed to see? Is my expectation realistic that it will be "easy" to use my GUI class to provide a web interface or a QT, a VTK or a whatever window? • Trying to parse twitter trends

  Im trying to parse twitter trends but i keep getting a parser error at "as_of". anyone know why this is happening? • WPF Data virtualizing ListView

  In our current WinForms app, we are displaying millions of records in ListView, using virtualization. Rows are loaded from DB as they are requested. This works well, with good performance. This is a showstopper for migrating to WPF for us. We need data virtualization in a ListView, like WinForms 2.0 has. Do you know a decent third-party control, or a relatively easy way of doing it with built-in controls? It doesn't need to be a DataGrid, a simple ListView will suffice. Note, I'm note talking about UI virtualization, it's data virtualization.

• Setting a session variable in Global.asax causes AJAX errors

  I'm getting a very peculiar problem with my asp.net application, it took me an age to track down but I still don't know what is causing this behaviour. If I set a session variable in the Application_PreRequestHandlerExecute event, then my external JavaScript files are ignored, and therfore causing a raft of errors. I have simplified the problem below. E.g. I have file called JScript.js containing the code: function myAlert() { alert("Hi World"); } And in my Default.aspx file I reference the js with the code: <script src="JScript.js" type="text/javascript"></script> And in the body onload event I call the myAlert() function: <body onload="myAlert()"> And finally in the Global.asax file: Private Sub Application_PreRequestHandlerExecute(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) HttpContext.Current.Session("myVar") = "MyValue" End Sub If you run the Default.aspx file you will see the js function isnt called, however, if you comment out the line of code Global.asax then the external js is called and the function executed when the page loads. • Access DotNetPanel/WebsitePanel Enterprise Server from outside the loopback address

  Hi Peoples, I am currently investigating integration of DotNetPanel/WebsitePanel with a website that is running ColdFusion. The issue I have come across is that it seems WebsitePanel only allows access to the Enterprise Server (where the web services are that I need access to) when the request is coming from the same physical machine (i.e. on the loop-back address 127.0.0.1). This unfortunately doesnt really work out too well with our current setup as we have our ColdFusion server running on one machine and WebsitePanel running on another. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can change this? Currently we are investigating writing a transparent proxy server that will sit on the portal machine and pass requests between the two sites, but that is less than ideal.

The question: is this a valid usage or it is just current implementation uses the same name as the jsp bean id when stores and looks for a bean in a session?

• Algorithm to fill slots

  I am searching for an algorithm to fill several slots, which are already filled to some level. The current levels and the available quantity to fill are known Resulting levels should be as equal as possible, but existing level cannot be reduced Slots are filled from left to right, so left slots get higher level if equal level is impossible       The image above shows six examples, each column represents a slot. The grey area is already filled, the blue are is the expected position of the new elements. I could iterate through my slots and increase the quantity on the lowest slot by 1 until the available quantity is consumed, but I wonder about how to actually calculate the new filling levels. I am going to implement this with SQL/PL/SQL, other code is just as welcome though :)

But if the next product matching the criteria in the query is 2 or more ID's ahead my cycle breaks. So is there a way for skipping this rows and get the next ID matching the criteria. • Can iptables allow Squid to process a request, then redirect the response packets to another port?

  I'm trying to test a fancy traffic analyzer app, which I have running on port 8890. My current plan is to let any HTTP request come into Squid, on port 3128, and let it process the request, and then just before it sends the response back, use iptables to redirect the response packets (leaving port 3128) to port 8890. I've researched this all night, and tried many iptables commands, but I'm missing something and my hair is falling out. Is this even possible? If so, what iptables incantation could do it? If not, any idea what might work on a single host, given multiple remote browser clients?

• C/C++/Assembly Programatically detect if hyper-threading is active on Windows, Mac and Linux

  I can already correctly detect the number of logical processors correctly on all three of these platforms. To be able to detect the number of physical processors/cores correctly I'll have to detect if hyperthreading is supported AND active (or enabled if you prefer) and if so divide the number of logical processors by 2 to determine the number of physical processors. Perphaps I should provide an example: A quad core Intel CPU's with hyperthreading enabled has 4 physical cores, yet 8 logical processors (hyperthreading creates 4 more logical processors). So my current function would detect 8 instead of the desired 4. My question therefore is if there is a way to detect whether hyperthreading is supported AND ENABLED?

I can implement this Iterators as separate classes but doing so I need that tree node should expose it's children collection as public. • Rails, REST Architecture and HTML 5: Cross domain requests with pre-flight requests

  While working on a project to make our site HTML 5 friendly, we were eager to embrace the new method for Cross Domain requests (no more posting through hidden iframes!!!). Using the Access Control specification we begin setting up some tests to verify the behaviour of various browsers. The current Rails RESTful architecture relies on the four HTTP verbs: GET, POST, PUT, DELETE. However in the Access Control spec, it dictates that non-simple methods (PUT, DELETE) require a pre-flight request using the HTTP verb OPTIONS. In addition during testing we discovered that Firefox 3.5.8 pre-flight POST requests as well. My question is this. Is anyone aware of any project for the Rails framework working to address the issue? If not, any opinions about the best strategy to support the OPTIONS method, since it has to support the routes for all the POST, PUT, DELETE methods?

  I upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 RC, and I remember filling one big form for MSDN help improvement campaign and I was wondering I will get to see a Help Viewer like MSDN included in Visual Studio 2008, which included One Program (Not IE), Index and the way to view preferred language setting. Google results shows that there were headlines that Microsoft Help Viewer released for 2010 RC, but where is it? is it the same one which opens in IE and has absolute difficult way to view it? Current MSDN opening in IE is so inconvenient, there is no index, there is no grouping of content, like I typed search for TextBox and it showed up for ASP.NET, WinForms and I got lost to find out the reference in multiple pages for search results.

• Modern way to handle and validate POST-data in MVC 2

  There are a lot of articles devoted to working with data in MVC, and nothing about MVC 2. So my question is: what is the proper way to handle POST-query and validate it. Assume we have 2 actions. Both of them operates over the same entity, but each action has its own separated set of object properties that should be bound in automatic manner. For example: Action "A" should bind only "Name" property of object, taken from POST-request Action "B" should bind only "Date" property of object, taken from POST-request As far as I understand - we cannot use Bind attribute in this case. So - what are the best practices in MVC2 to handle POST-data and probably validate it. UPD: After Actions performed - additional logic will be applied to the objects so they become valid and ready to store in persistent layer. For action "A" - it will be setting up Date to current date.

  Hi all, I am trying to develop a J2ME application that could retrieve the google map by passing in the GPS coordinates. From http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/Google_Maps_API_in_Java_ME, it provides the Utility method for map scrolling. Basically it states that i need to include MicroFloat library in my project. Here's what i did (Not sure if i am doing it right) Create a project, build the code. Add the jar file into my current project lib. but i am still getting error from codes. • Serving files inside of directories with ruby and mongrel

  I made a simple web server in Ruby using the Mongrel gem. It works great for files in a single directory, but I run into some path issues when inside a directory. Lets say we have 2 files in a directory named "dir1", "index.html" and "style.css". If we visit http://host/dir1/index.html, the file is found, but style.css isn't because it's trying to load "style.css" from http://host/style.css instead of inside the directory. index.html is trying to load style.css as if its in the same directory as itself. <link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> I can get the file if I enter the full path of style.css: /dir1/style.css but it doesn't seem to remember it's already inside a directory and that no path before a filename should serve from the current directory. • How do I stop displaying a J2ME MIDP application, just before destroying it?

  I have a J2ME application where the user has the option to dial a phone number from within the application. This should be the last thing the user does with the app, so it should stop displaying anything. My current code: public void callAndExit() { // use a platform-specific request to dial MyMidletThingummy.getInstance().platformRequest( "tel:" + number ); notifyDestroyed(); } The call works just fine, uses the phone's native way of calling, etc. The problem is that, just after the call completes (whenever the user hangs up), my application displays for a split second before being destroyed. Is there something I can do so that I stop displaying the MIDlet (and, say, show the phone's home screen or whatever else it would rather display), then dial out?

• Loop through text nodes inside a div

  I am trying to do a text replace, but to do so, i need to loop through the text nodes of a div. Each Div upon clicking, loads via ajax it's appropriate content. But then I need to do text-replacing inside any of the text nodes inside there. My current code, after loading the ajax content, loops through all text nodes of the whole page, and therefore is too resource intensive. I have been looking for hours trying to find out how to both loop thru a div, and get the text nodes... and this has to work in firefox, google chrome and ie6. Any thoughts or suggestions?

• Using the Facebook Graph APIs PHP library

  I am using the PHP library for the Graph API (http://github.com/facebook/php-sdk) but am a bit confused about how it is all working (or not). I just want to authenticate the user and get the user ID back. What I really want to know is what to do once the user has logged in to Facebook and returned to my site. There is data called 'session' in the URL. Does this need to be stored in order to continually get the user ID? It is really not apparent, to me, from the samples or (lack of) documentation. Also, would it be easier to just cut out the PHP library altogether and just handle the reponse myself, storing it in a session variable. If i were to do this, what is the best method of getting/extracting the current users ID?

  Hi I have a product table which simplifies to this: create table product(id int primary key identity, productid int, year int, quarter int, price money) and some sample data: insert into product select 11, 2010, 1, 1.11 insert into product select 11, 2010, 2, 2.11 insert into product select 11, 2010, 3, 3.11 insert into product select 12, 2010, 1, 1.12 insert into product select 12, 2010, 2, 2.12 insert into product select 13, 2010, 1, 1.13 Prices are can be changed each quarter, but not all products get a new price each quarter. Now I could duplicate the data each quarter, keeping the price the same, but I'd rather use a view. How can I create a view that can be used to return prices for (for example) quarter 2? I've written this to return the current (=latest) price: CREATE VIEW vwCurrentPrices AS SELECT * FROM ( SELECT *, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY productid ORDER BY year DESC, quarter DESC) AS Ranking FROM product ) p WHERE p.Ranking = 1 I'd like to create a view so I can use queries like select * from vwProduct where quarter = 2

• ASP.NET MVC ,Maintaining Model State between Ajax requests

  problem: On first full page request, my controller invokes an applicationServices Layer (Web Service Proxy to my business tier) in order to populate a collection of current services that is stored in my own controller base class property. This is then to be displayed within a view. Everything within the context of that controller has access to this "Services Collection". Now when i make further calls to the same action method via an AJAX Call, i obviously hitt a different instance of that controller meaning my services collection is empty. So other than re-getting the whole collection again, where would i store this collection so it gets persisted between ajax requests? Should i persist it as a seperate DomainModel Object, Session object?....as ViewData is not working for me obv. Excuse my MVC ignorance :) Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

• Has anyone combined soap.py or suds with python-ntlm?

  I'd like to replace an app's current (badly busted and crufty) cURL-based (cURL command-line based!) SOAP client with suds or soap.py. Trouble is, we have to contact an MS CRM service, and therefore must use NTLM. For a variety of reasons the NTLM proxy is a bit of a pain to use, so I'm looking into python-ntlm to provide that support. Can suds or soap.py be made to use this authentication method? If so, how? If not, any other suggestions would be fantastic.
