• DAO design pattern and using it across multiple tables

  I'm looking for feedback on the Data Access Object design pattern and using it when you have to access data across multiple tables. It seems like that pattern, which has a DAO for each table along with a Data Transfer Object (DTO) that represents a single row, isn't too useful for when dealing with data from multiple tables. I was thinking about creating a composite DAO and corresponding DTO that would return the result of, let's say performing a join on two tables. This way I can use SQL to grab all the data instead of first grabbing data from one using one DAO and than the second table using the second DAO, and than composing them together in Java. Is there a better solution? And no, I'm not able to move to Hibernate or another ORM tool at the moment. Just straight JDBC for this project.

• Lightweight messaging (async invocations) in Java

  I am looking for lightweight messaging framework in Java. My task is to process events in a SEDA’s manner: I know that some stages of the processing could be completed quickly, and others not, and would like to decouple these stages of processing. Let’s say I have components A and B and processing engine (be this container or whatever else) invokes component A, which in turn invokes component B. I do not care if execution time of component B will be 2s, but I do care if execution time of component A is below 50ms, for example. Therefore, it seems most reasonable for component A to submit a message to B, which B will process at the desired time. I am aware of different JMS implementations and Apache ActiveMQ: they are too heavyweight for this. I searched for some lightweight messaging (with really basic features like messages serialization and simplest routing) to no avail. Do you have anything to recommend in this issue?

• sql server deadlock issue on a single table..................

  I have one table let's say "xxx "in sql server 2000 . One .exe is inserting data into that table "xxx" through sql job. But once data is inserted , one stored procedure is reading the data from that "xxx table "and inserting/updating into other two tables and updating back the status into the same "xxx" table. Now, client says that multiple deadlocks are occuring on that "xxx" table . please kindly anyone sdvice me the resolution steps to be taken to resolve this deadlock issue and how to identify it step by step............. • How to use > in an xargs command?

  I want to find a bash command that will let me grep every file in a directory and write the output of that grep to a separate file. My guess would have been to do something like this ls -1 | xargs -I{} "grep ABC '{}' > '{}'.out" but, as far as I know, xargs doesn't like the double-quotes. If I remove the double-quotes, however, then the command redirects the output of the entire command to a single file called '{}'.out instead of to a series of individual files. Does anyone know of a way to do this using xargs? I just used this grep scenario as an example to illustrate my problem with xargs so any solutions that don't use xargs aren't as applicable for me.

• Extracting an interface from .NEt System classes

  When using Visual Studio it is easy to extract an interface from a class that I have written myself. I right click on the class and select 'Refactor' then select 'Extract Interface'. Let's assume for a second that I wanted to create a ConfigurationManager wrapper and write some tests around it. A quick way to do that would be to extract an interface from ConfigurationManager by right clicking it, then 'Go To Definition' and then from inside the class select 'Refactor' then select 'Extract Interface'. Then I would simply create my wrapper class, inherit from my newly created interface, and then implement it and I have a great starting point for my wrapper class. However, extracting an interface from any .NET system classes is not possible, probably because it's just meta data about the classes and not the classes themselves (or I am doing it wrong). Is there an easy way to do what I am trying to accomplish? I want to ensure I am not wasting time typing what I don't need to be typing. Thanks

• How to get logical parts of a sentence with java?

  Hello. Let's say there is a sentence: On March 1, he was born. Changing it to He was born on March 1. doesn't break the sense of the sentence and it is still valid. Shuffling words in any other way would produce weird to invalid sentences. So basically, I'm talking about parts of the sentence, which make the information more specific, but removing them doesn't break the whole sentence. Is there any NLP library in which identifying such parts is available?

• Passing Reference types by value in C#

  I want to pass a reference type by value to a method in C#. Is there a way to do it. In C++, I could always rely on the copy constructor to come into play if I wanted to pass by Value. Is there any way in C# except: 1. Explicitly creating a new object 2. Implementing IClonable and then calling Clone method. Here's a small example: Let's take a class A in C++ which implements a copy constructor. A method func1(Class a), I can call it by saying func1(objA) (Automatically creates a copy) Does anything similar exist in C#. By the way, I'm using Visual Studio 2005.

• iOS 6&7: Storyboard, master detail ViewController when detailViewController is dynamic

  I'm building an app for iPhone, I want to use storyboard in XCode to do a simple selection from a tableView (let's call it master table view controller with couple rows) then through navigation it goes to next page and shows a detail view for that selection. I have in my code a base class representing my detailViewController, and have 2-3 driver classes of this base class representing what I want to show in detail view controller in second page, can someone give me an idea how to set destination viewController (detailViewController) dynamically to one of my child class based on the selected row in master view controller using storyboard? Usually you assign a class to destination class in storyboard for your detail view controller with using segue, but since my destination class could be a different (child class) how you set this in storyboard? • Java memory mapped files and swap

  I'm looking at some memory mapped files in Java. Let's say I have a heap size set to 2gb, and I memory map a file that is 50gb - far more than the physical memory on the machine. The OS will cache parts of that 50gb file in the os file cache, the java process will have 2gb of heap space. What I'm curious about is how does the OS decide how much of the 50gb file to cache? For instance, if I have another java process, also with a 2gb heap size, will that 2gb be swapped out to allow the os to cache parts of the memory mapped file? Will parts of the heap space of the first process be swapped out to allow the OS to cache? Is there any way to tell the OS not to swap heap space for OS caching? If the OS doesn't swap out main processes, how does it determine how big its file cache should be?

• rake db:create gives some problem when used from limited account

  I am using mysql 5.1 and mysql gems version is 2.73 This is giving the following error message when I try to run it from a limited account in my XP. If try it using the admin account, it works fine. I think this is wierd because it cannot be the problem of mysql gem. (in F:/Temp/wassup) !!! The bundled mysql.rb driver has been removed from Rails 2.2. Please install the mysql gem and try again: gem install mysql. rake aborted! 5: Access is denied. - C:/Program Files/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mysql-2.7. 3-x86-mswin32/ext/mysql.so (See full trace by running task with --trace) I need to work from the limited account. Can anyone let me know why is this happening?

• overflow-x AND Middle Mouse Button Moving

  My Page is 980px in Width, but I have a few design elements (which belong with the background). I positioned them with position: absolute;. This creates a horizontal scrollbar for those who have a =< 1024 resolution. I disabled that scrollbar with overflow-x:hidden on (and for IE7 and etc). However, when I hold my middle mouse button,(i think this applies to laptop touchpads as well) it let's me move around to the right, is it possible to fix this with anything? (javascript, css)? Tested this issues in Chrome, IE, Firefox.

• Problem with displaying graphs on a Qt canvas

  Let's say I'm a Qt newbie. I want a good Qt library for displaying simple graphs. I've found the quanava library. But there is a problem. When I compiled a basic example it looks like graph edges are not painted properly when moving nodes. I don't have any idea where is a bug but this code seems to be rather simple. I think this is a problem with paint method in NodeItem class. Maybe someone has already solved this problem because this library is quite popular.

  Hi folks, I am working on one feature i.e. to apply language segmentation rules ( grammatical ) for Latin based language ( English currently ). Currently I am in phase of breaking sentences of user input. e.g.: "I am working in language translation". "I have used Google MT API for this" In above example i will break above sentence by full stop (.) This is normal cases where I am breaking sentence on dot, but there are n number of characters for breaking sentence like ( . ! ? etc ). I have following SRX rules for segmentation. Here my question are :- 1) Is there any reference ? which I can use for resolving my language segmentation rules. 2) Or Is there any forums on language segmentation ? , so that i can discuss efficiently Please let me know if anybody know about this ? • Font choices in International scenarios: multilingual vs unicode

  I have a website that will eventually display multiple languages. I notice the common fonts used in web CSS (ex: Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman, Tahoma) and even the newer Vista/Office 2007/VS2008 fonts (Calibri,Cambria, Candara, Corbel, etc) are significantly larger (~350K) than your average (US only?) TTF font (~50k) so these fonts contain most/all the major character sets that common languages (Spanish, French, German, etc) use. My question is, would somebody confirm that these fonts listed above are acceptable for international use of the major (let's say top 8) spoken languages? If so, then I'm guessing the only purpose of unicode fonts; such "Arial Unicode" (a massive 22mb) is only for dealing with extremely niche dialog, eastern glyphs (Chinese, Japanese) and dead languages? I'm just looking for some confirmation from developers that have their desktop apps/web apps rendering multiple languages and have a visual confirmation, I'm already in the 99% sure bin but you know what they say about assumption.

Is this possible in Swift?

• Data model for timesheet to task and/or timesheet to project?

  Let's say I want to make a simple project tracking system. A manager can create a project. Then he can create tasks for that project. Team members can record the hours they work for each task or for the project as a whole. Is the following design for the t_timesheet table a good idea? timesheet_id - primary key, autoincrement project_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_project task_id - nullable, foreign key constraint to t_task user_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_user hours - decimal Or should I do something like this: timesheet_id - primary key, autoincrement task_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_task user_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_user hours - decimal In the second option, I intend to always have a record in t_task labelled "miscellaneous items" with a foreign key to the relevant t_project record. Then I'll be able to track all hours for a project that aren't for any particular task. Are any of the ideas above good? What would be better?

I have looked at the Advanced TextFormatting page on MSDN, but it is too complicated for me, also the sample in there does not compile :( I am looking at creating a custom control which can do this for me.   In my opinion WWW will sooner or later come to full-blown AJAX web-sites, so that we wouldn't have page reloads every time you click somewhere. Now I want you to ask this. What tools and frameworks can one use to make a Java Web-application running on Tomcat have AJAX functionality like "in-place, with no page reloading" table sorting by clicking on its column header, multi-tabs that enable opening at once the new screen to the user without reloading a page, saving data in the database without reloading a page, and other similar things that we do not usually see on web pages. That's all should probably be based on AJAX. But how to integrate this AJAX functionality with existing java web-frameworks, let's say Spring MVC? Or maybe there are other frameworks that better suit such needs but that can be integrated with core Spring?

• XmlSerializer.Deserialize method appends timezone to a time and datetime field

  Have a small script in Microsoft.NET 2.0 that deserializes a XML back to a typed object, connects dyanimcally to a web service using ServiceDescription and binds the deserialized typed object to the WebMethod inbound. The XML prior to serialization looks like below <completion_time>12:19:38</completion_time> on the wire when communicating to the web service looks like below <completion_time>12:19:38.0000000-04:00</completion_time> with the timezone appended to the end. This is causing the time to be read differently when communicating to a web service at a different timezone. is there anyway to let XmlSerializer skip the timezone? Or any other known workarounds?
