• ubuntu lucid: blank screen AFTER login. Please help!

  Hi there, after i did a partial upgrade my screen went blank. I think i used an onboard graphics card but i cannot be sure. Please advise me. i tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 at startup and did a apt-get upgrade and apt-get update. Didn't work. Am very frustrated after spending 3 days to get ubuntu to work for it to kill my screen the moment i did a first update. Please help.

• Run a server and local wireless network off my laptop with no internet.

  I'm trying to run a wireless network from my computer so that people in range can connect to the network and hit a website running off my machine. I don't want to enable file sharing or remote access or anything else of that nature. I just want them to be able to connect to the network, type in an IP or domain name in a browser, and be taken to a locally hosted website. No broader internet access needed. Any ideas / links to good tutorials on the subject? Is this something i can achieve with just a wifi card or will need a router?

• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS.   On the iPhone, I use MagicJack to get completely free calls over WiFi to US numbers. I'm looking for a similar app to enable me to call UK numbers for free on the iPhone. Does anyone know of one? To make this question of broader applicability to everyone, what apps also allow free calling to other countries? Any smartphone platform (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone) could be useful. Note: I'm talking only about apps that allow completely free calling - the Apple app stores at least are full of apps that allow "cheap" calling. Suspicious apps that require credit card numbers upfront, etc., aren't as interesting.

• what's POST code 18 / can I run an ASRock P55 Pro + Core i3 530?

  When I switch my newly built PC on, the fans start up, but I get nothing on the monitor, and the POST display on the motherboard runs quickly through various codes and then stops at code 18, which does not appear in the manual (the list there seems identical to this one). This lasts about 10 seconds, after which the machine shuts down. After a pause (also about 10 seconds) it starts up again, and this repeats until I cut the power. Interestingly, when I push the reset button, it stops at POST code 16 (which is also not listed in the manual). Does anyone have information about the meaning of those codes? Motherboard: ASRock P55 Pro CPU: Intel Core i3 530 Graphics Card: Sapphire HHD 5750 Does anyone have experience with that Motherboard/CPU combination? It says on the packaging and in the manual that it's only compatible with Core i5 and i7 (no mention of i3), but on the maker's product page, the i3 is listed as compatible as well.

• Can't run monitor at native 1080p resolution on Windows 7

  I have a 24" ViewSonic VX2453 monitor that supports 1920x1080p, connected using HDMI. However at that resolution, the desktop goes off the screen. Using the Nvidia control panel, I have to set it to a custom resolution of 1804x1014 to display correctly. The monitor has its drivers properly installed (the correct model name shows up in control panel after installing the drivers), and I'm running 64 bit Win7 Ultimate. I have a GeForce 560 Ti card, if that helps. Why does this happen?

• Access RAID configuration in x3550M2

  I'm trying to configure RAID in a IBM x3550 M2 server. I can't find any messages on boot about any hotkey to access the configuration utility. I wasn't able either in BIOS. The card is a on board LSI 1068e. I can't find the original CD's shipped with the server, but I downloaded Server Guide 9.21 from IBM web. Booted with that, and only getting stuck at "Windows loading"p. Tried with a 8.? version from a x3550 (M1), but it was less useful. Although I do not consider myself an expert, I'm starting to feel like a newbie luser. Any help?

• Does PCI bus really occupy 1.8GB

  I am using a Dell Vostro 1700 laptop which currently has 2GB of RAM. I was considering buying some more memory to upgrade it to 4GB. I am running 32 bit Windows Vista and I know that there can be issues that prevent it from making use of a full 4GB which I believe relate to the fact that memory mapped devices, e.g. graphics card, also need to be allocated addresses in the 4GB range addressable with 32 bits. Consequently I was looking at device manager - resources by connection - memory to see what devices where allocated what memory addresses. I was surprised to see that there was an entry for [80000000 - F3FFFFFF] PCI bus. That is a 1.8GB range of addresses. When I expanded it the only thing in it was [E0000000 - EFFFFFFF] NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT which is only 256MB. So my question is does the PCI bus really occupy 1.8GB of address space and will it prevent my computer from making use of any more memory than it already has.

• Failover NIC with Windows 7 running Apache Server

  I have a Apache Server running on a Windows 7 Desktop for a internal website (Intranet). I am trying to figure out how I can make this system as failover safe as possible. One thing I want to do is use the 2nd NIC card that is currently disable. I only have one gateway address to my router. I do not have any computer running a Server O/S. If NIC1 crashes by chance(just humor me!), how could NIC2's IP take on the host name (I have mapped in host file) . I don't really care if the static IP of NIC2 changes seeing that the host name is the only thing I need. Could I add two IP's to the host file, with same host email and maybe create some script that will run IF NIC 1 fails? OR is there any failover software that will do this for me?

• wireless dropping out

  My wireless network connection is dropping out and its driving me nuts. It is weird because it happens at totally random intervals and other devices work while my computer has been dropped. Both my USB dongle and wifi card randomly disconnect from the router and I am unable to connect for a couple of minutes. It is especially irritating because two different adapters are failing at the same time, sounds like a software problem to me, but where? Both my laptop and iPod remain connected when the connection drops. What on earth is happening? I doubt its the router because the other devices would disconnect as well.

  Hi, I have been looking for information about using a second monitor but thought of using a touchscreen will a touchscreen monitor work in dual set up, but not set up as main monitor which is the question. Can't find any information on this only when others set it has main. only this piece If you mean do the touch screen features still work on the other machine, the answer is yes. Past that, you can even see some of the touch screen features on a non touch screen monitor (just not the multi touch features!) • Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) Virtual Machine?

  I have been looking into this for a while and have attempted quite a few "solutions" (hackintosh boot images, universal unlockers, etc) before I gave in and asked for help. I know this is extremely difficult to accomplish, especially with an AMD CPU, but it has been done and it can't hurt to ask. Question Does anyone know of any way to actually get Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) to boot in VMware Workstation 8.0.2? I know that Mac OS X is heavily dependant on hardware configuration, so I will post my PC's hardware below, if it helps. As far as I know it's only reliant on the CPU, but I will post it all just in case.   I am curious if windows print servers can keep a count of the printed pages sent to it? Can an individual PC (WinXP+)? Is there some secret command you can send it (with telnet, dos, etc)? • Mobile Intel 965 vs 4 Series chipset speed differences

  A client of ours is having a problem panning on a mapping application that we write on their panasonic toughbooks (CF-19's). One of their toughbooks the panning is fairly smooth while on the other it is really slow. Doesn't help that they have all the settings turned up, but I would of thought any reasonably new graphics card (even shared memory) would have more than adequate graphic speed. I am pretty sure that the graphic adapter is to blame, but I can't find anything out about either chipset (level of acceleration, non-problems, etc). All I get is the intel data sheets. The faster panning one is on the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset while the slower is on the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset. Is this expected? Does it sound like a driver problem? They both have the same amount of ram and same cpu.

• How do I usb tether my Cyanogen modded G1's internet connection to my Toshiba Tecra 8000 running Xubuntu?

  I have usb-tethering enabled in my phone. It works fine with Vista. When I plug my phone into my Tecra 8000 laptop running Xubuntu, dmesg shows: "usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8". I see that the OS has detected it as a storage device, but I can't get it to function correctly as a network device. /dev/us* shows no usb0, but it does show /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep81 /dev/usbdev1.8_ep00 ... usbdev1.8_ep83 I could just use the wireless tether app for android, but I can't get my Netgear wg511 v2 (made in China) wireless card to work in this laptop either. But that's another post for later.

  I am working with a high resolution camera: 4008x2672. I a writing a simple program which grabs frame from the camera and sends the frame to a avi file. For working with such a high resolution, I found only x264 codec that could do the trick (Suggestions welcome). I am using opencv for most of the image handling stuff. • Computer powers off then tries to start up but resets repeatedly.

  My machine has started shutting itself off after a few minutes on, everything goes off. A few seconds (3-5) after everything has stopped the lights come back on, the cpu fan and gfx card come on again. They spin for a second, then everything goes off again. A few seconds later same things happens again, light come back on, fans spin for a few seconds then go off. This repeats seemingly forever. If I leave it for a while I can power the machine back on for a while and it will boot again. It will then stay on for a little while again before power off. Rinse and repeat. Is this likely to be power supply or something else? The machine has been up and running for a couple of years before this.

  I am new to xen and I am trying to get a domU running but I am having problems with it. I think my network card might not support bridging which is bizarre.
