• Is there an open source repository for SQL code?

  I find myself writing SQL code (queries or stored procs) to solve problems that can definitely be defined as 'patterns' that occur frequently in business. Rather than having to wrack my brain each time I encounter a new problem (which must have been solved a countless times by other coders/db analysts, I wondered if there was a repository I could go to check out (peer reviewed) code - and maybe add my two pence every now and then. I know different db vendors tend to write slightly variant forms of SQL - but there could still be a repository with ANSI stuff and proprietary stuff. Hopefully, such a site would encourage more people to write standardized SQL. Is there such a site?. If no - why not? (would anyone else be interested in such a site?) If such a site exists, please provide link(s), as Google is not finding anything remotely useful.

• Is there anything like Zope Page Templates for Ruby on Rails?

  I have a Ruby on Rails app that I built myself, but which needs a redesign by a professional designer. I know most designers just give you Photoshop mockups and slices, but I would like to hire someone to implement the design as well, which means rewriting the css style sheets and the erb and haml templates. The problem is that I want someone else to implement the redesign without exposing my business logic code to the redesign implementer. Also, I wish there was a way to allow a designer to implement a redesign on a Ruby on Rails site without having to know anything about Ruby on Rails. Are either of these scenarios possible using any combination of software tools? • View / ViewModel - what is the sense (in a WPF control)?

  Not as funny as it sounds. Normally the View / ViewModel should decouple the presentation from the business logic. Good. Now, a Control in WPF is basically invisible unless made different (with the exceptions of UserControl and Window that have XAML directly attached). The Style is putting in the "visual presentation" - which basically means a Control does not need a view mechanism as WPF already has one? In addition. the ViewModel is actually part of the Control, or? Just fighting with that stuff. I know in ASP.NET, WinForms the separation makes a lot of sense - but there, basically, controls HAVE an intrinsic look. In WPF, I have some where it makes sense (derived from UserControl), but for the majority of the controls I write, the View & ViewModel look like pretty much totally superflous thanks to the already presenting view mechanism.

  I have a enum class called Gender and I have values in this like public enum GENDER { MALE = 1, FAMALE = 2, OTHERS = 3, } and in my business object I just created a property for this like public GENDER Gender { get { return gender; } set { gender = value; } } in my database its in type integer. For this I tried to assign the Gender value in the add function by its name Gender. but its showing error. Is it possible to cast the enum to integer so that it'll get the value automatically. can anyone help me out here....

• Return Integer value from SSIS execute SQL Task

  I am using SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Studio and struggling with returning an integer value from a very simple execute SQL Task. For a very simple test, I wrote the SQL Statement as: Select 35 As 'TotalRecords' Then, I specified ResultSet as ResultName = TotalRecords and VariableName = User::TotalRecords When I execute this, the statement is executed but the variable doesn't have the updated value. However, it has the default value that I specified while variable definition. The return of a date variable works, but integer variable isn't working. The type of User::TotalRecords specified is Int32 in a package scope. Thanks for any hints

• Detect at runtime which country's App Store my iPhone app was downloaded from?

  I have a feature in my iPhone application that, for business reasons, should only be shown/available to customers in the US. If I want to release this app to App Stores outside the US, what's the best way to figure out which country I'm in without relying on user-defined settings such as language and locale? In my mind, the ideal solution is that there's some runtime property that can tell me which App Store country the app was downloaded from, and I can take action accordingly. Looking through the docs and searching the web, I'm not coming up with anything in this department. I don't expect the solution to be 100% foolproof as far as users not being in the country they say they're from, but as close as possible would be nice. I suppose one solution would be to make a separate build for a new product on the App Store and have two versions, one for the US and one for the others, but that doesn't seem ideal. I'm hoping it can be the same product on the App Store to prevent things like fragmentation of user reviews. Thanks in advance!

I want to clean things out and refactor the code out completely, so there is a clear seperation of concerns. I am looking at MVC or some other suitable design pattern in order to achieve this. I would like to get recommendations from people who have walked this road before - Do I use MVP or MVC (or another pattern)? • Image animation stops on minimizing and restoring

  I have a .NET WinForms application with an animated GIF in a PictureBox. It's a loading animation, shown while a BackgroundWorker does some processing in another thread. I load the image by setting the Image property and it animates on its own. All is fine until I minimize and restore the application. At which point, the image stops animating and just displays whatever frame it was last on. Note that: The background thread still runs fine and none of the "business" of the application is affected. Subsequently-displayed animated GIFs do work fine (unless the application is minimized again). Does anyone know what causes this problem? Any workarounds?

• Are there libraries or techniques for collecting and weighing keywords from a block of text?

  I have a field in my database that can contain large blocks of text. I need to make this searchable but don't have the ability to use full text searching. Instead, on update, I want my business layer to process the block of text and extract keywords from it which I can save as searchable metadata. Ideally, these keywords could then be weighed based on the number of times they appear in the block of text. Naturally, words like "the", "and", "of", etc. should be discarded as they just add a lot of noise to the search. Are there tools or libraries in Python that can do this filtering or should I roll my own?

  Hi all, I'm not sure if this question has been answered elsewhere and I can't seem to find anything through google that isn't a "Hello World" example... I'm coding in C# .NET 4.0. I'm trying to develop a console application that will open, display text, and then wait for the user to input commands, where the commands will run particular business logic. For example: If the user opens the application and types "help", I want to display a number of statements etc etc. I'm not sure how to code the 'event handler' for user input though.   I have XMLs(or Objects) that represents data at some point in a business process. I would like to be able to see what has changed between step1 and step5(two versions of the same XML or Object). Id like to implement this like diff function in version control system. how to do it in web app? P.S. I dont want to just store those files in VCS and than make it do the diff. However if I could somehow emulate VCS without having one that would be cool. P.S. I know there are some JS frameworks that offer diff functionality, but the XML could have 10MB, so I think it should be dont at server side.

• Response Time is different for mulitiple execution of the application with the same request Performa

  My java application functionality is to provide reference data (basically loads lots of data from xml files into hashmap) and hence we request for one such data from the hashmap based on a id and we have such multiple has map for different set of business data. The problem is that when i tried executing the java application for the same request multiple times, the response times are different like 31ms, 48ms, 72ms, 120ms, 63ms etc. hence there is a considerable gap between the min and max time taken for the execution to complete. Ideally, i would expect the response times to be like, 63ms, 65ms, 61ms, 70ms, 61ms, but in my case the variation of the response time for the same request is varying hugely. I had used a opensource profile to understand if there is any extra execution of the methods or memory leak, but as per my understanding there was no problem. Please let me know what could be the reasons and how can i address this problem.

• running a stored procedure inside a sql trigger

  Hi all, the business logic in my application requires me to insert a row in table X when a row is inserted in table Y. Furthermore, it should only do it between specific times(which I have to query another table for). I have considered running a script every 5 minutes or so to check this, but I stumbled upon triggers and figured this might be a better way to do it. But I find the syntax for procedures a little bewildering and I keep getting an error I have no idea how to fix. Here is where I start: CREATE TRIGGER reservation_auto_reply AFTER INSERT ON reservation FOR EACH ROW BEGIN IF NEW.sent_type = 1 /* In-App */ THEN INSERT INTO `messagehistory` (`trip`, `fk`, `sent_time`, `status`, `message_type`, `message`) VALUES (NEW.trip, NEW.psk, 'NOW()', 'submitted', 4, 'This is an automated reply to reservation'); END; I get an error in the VALUES part of the statmenet but im not sure where. I still have to query the other table for the information I need, but I can't even get past this part. Any help is appreciated, including links to many examples..Thanks

  I've read a lot of comments mention in passing that the BlackBerry threading model deviates from the Java standard and can cause issues, but no amount of googling has enlightened me on what this means exactly. I've been developing a fairly large business application for the BlackBerry and, although I don't really have any previous experience with Java multi-threaded applications, haven't come across any issue that we've been able to blame on threading, other than what we caused ourselves. Can someone describe exactly how the BlackBerry threading model is different, and how I as a developer should take that into account? Obviously any links on the topic would also be great.

  Hey, I'm just looking for some rough guidance here on the feasibility of a project. I have say a few thousand text documents and I want to create a web based system to serve them up to users in a OS X application. It's just a tiny aside for my family's small business, so it doesn't need to be amazing at the moment, we just want to see if we can can anyone to use it. I can't believe it can be that hard to do this? -Some sort of SQL backend database to manage permissions for users? -Download through the application? -For the moment just want to view the raw text files. -If we want people to pay, how would we go about incorporating that?   I'm writing my third app, and I already have an app in the App Store, but I still don't get this App ID business. I created the App IDs for my first two applications like this: XXXXXXXXXX.me.cbg.FirstApp YYYYYYYYYY.me.cbg.SecondApp but then Apple introduced the App ID wizard, which I used to create the App ID and provisioning profiles for my third application: ZZZZZZZZZZ.* So my question is: What is the "proper" way of creating App IDs for three completely independent apps? Should I use the XXXXXXXXXX.* format or XXXXXXXXXX.me.cbg.*? Should I create three different App IDs, or just one wildcard ID?

There is some general good advice to make paper contracts before starting new jobs. When I started my work as a freelancer I hadn't got any clue how such contract should looks like.   If it's important to keep data access 'away' from business and presentation layers, what alternatives or approaches can I take so that my LINQ to SQL entities can stay in the data access layer? So far I seem to be simply duplicating the classes produced by sqlmetal, and passing those object around instead simply to keep the two layers appart. For example, I have a table in my DB called Books. If a user is creating a new book via the UI, the Book class generated by sqlmetal seems like a perfect fit although I'm tightly coupling my design by doing so.

  I am contemplating writing my first blackberry app. I am fundamentally, a C/C++ programmer (not Java), can anyone provide some guidelines on the quickest route (i.e. shallowest learning curve) to writing a blackberry app?   I'm starting on my first business project (.NET) and am trying to follow DDD principles. Are there any guidelines or common patterns for orgaining source code and namespaces? For example, do your domain objects go in a namespace MyProject.Domain or whatever? Would you separate the concrete implementations and the interfaces? In different namespaces? Different folders? Different solutions? I know a lot of this is subjective and dependent on project size, but a few pointers or suggestions to get started on a relatively small but extensible n-tier project would be useful.
