• Hosting and domain registrations for multiple clients under a single hosting account of mine?

So far the websites utilize single-user content management systems, so the websites create, as far as I know, minimal load on the shared servers. I have always required that each of my clients purchase annual shared hosting at Dreamhost. For domain registration, I ask that they register with Dreamhost, but some already have a registered domain elsewhere and this is fine with me. I do this so the billing issues are the client's responsibility, not mine. My question is: Since I can register unlimited domains and connect them to my one shared hosting account at Dreamhost, should I not be requiring clients to individually pay for shared hosting and a domain? Should I actually be paying for one hosting account and then hosting all of my client's websites on that account? As I said before, I currently have each client buy their own hosting, because I feel that, for example, if there is high traffic to their site, there would be less a chance of the site going down than if their site was hosted with many others on one account. I am famous for being long-winded, please let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks!

  I am always looking for good books on security, compliance and of course, PCI.  Here is one I think you will find very useful. "PCI Compliance, Third Edition: Understand and Implement Effective PCI Data Security Standard Compliance" by Branden Williams and Anton Chuvakin.  [Fair disclosure - Branden and I work together on the Information Systems Security Association Journal's editorial board.]   The primary reason I like this book is that the authors take a holistic architectural approach to PCI compliance and that to me is the most safe and sane way to approach PCI.  Using such an architectural approach to PCI is, in my humble opinion, the underlying intent of PCI.  Don't create a checklist of the PCI DSS and then map a solution to each.  That is a recipe for disaster.  Instead, look at how the different components and their configurations work together in a synergistic fashion.  In short, create a security architecture and governance framework (the ISO 27000 series is a good place to start) that begins with an evaluation of the requirements laid down in the PCI DSS, as well as your other applicable compliance, business and technical requirements.  By developing an integrated security architecture you should be able to not only address current requirements, but also be in a position to quickly address future ones as well.

  I'm streaming few precompressed DVB videos from cloud. The streams are generated from VLC on "impossible" ports (such as 64085, 64086 etc) reverse proxed by Apache on port 80 and 8080. All the generated streams are listed in "http://95.110.164.61/indexv.html". From an ADSL connection with enough downlink bandwidth, recalling the stream generated by VLC (such as "http://95.110.164.61:64087/mpg2_6.4") it flows fluently. Recalling the same stream proxed by Apache ("http://95.110.164.61/mpg2_6.4") the stream stops and goes. The only situation in which the Apache proxed streams flow regularly is from a site connected through 64 Mbps warranted bandwith with RTT to the server less than 10 mseconds. Please note that streams below 2 Mbps are fluently proxed. The system is a single core xeon with windows 2008 R2 on 4 GB of RAM with 1 Gbps of network bandwidth. The drain of computational and bandwidth resources is negligeable, the RAM usage always lower than 50%. On the system I run many VLC streamers. Any of them drains a variable amount of RAM (from about 25 to 70 MB). On the contrary the couple of httpd.exe processes drain no more than 7 MB. Using Wireshark (on the server) I see that VLC directy send to the client much more packets than Apache, and the stream is framgmented on many frames. I'm not a programmer, a newby of Apache. Can anyone please address me to a specific portion of the Apache's huge documentation? Thank you. igino

• Portable and Secure Document Repository

  I'm trying to find a document manager/repository (WinXP) that can be used from a USB disk. I would like a tool that will allow you to add all documents into a single repository (or a secure file system). Ideally you would login to this portable application to add or retrieve a document and document shouldn't be accessible outside of the application. I have found an application called Benubird Pro (app is portable) that allows you to add files to a single repository, but downsides are that it is not secure and the repository is always stored on the PC and not on the USB disk. Are you able to recommend any other applications? Thanks

  I have a vaio laptop with an ATI Radeon video card and an external screen. I used to run dual monitors on Ubuntu 10.10 fine, but recently decided to upgrade to 11.10 via 11.04 I don't think it's the video card or the fglrx driver. It seems to be unity. When I start up, the laptop screen is normal and the external screen is all white, although I can move my mouse over it. However, the cursor becomes the big X that used to be cursor of the first versions of Xwindows. I can right click on it, and it brings up the context menu for the desktop. And then, all of a sudden, it shows my desktop background. I can continue to move my mouse over the external screen, and now the cursor is normal (little white arrow). But I can't do anything any longer (not even the context menu as before), and trying to drag a window to it (which always worked on 10.10) doesn't work. I actually really like unity. It gives me the most our of my desktop, and uses all space available, which is great. But how can I get my second screen back? I tried unity 2D, but the result is the same. We released a software version of the Sun Ray client called Oracle Virtual Desktop Client (OVDC). There is a version for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. I have a minimac at home and I installed OVDC on it, which of course works great but since I like to re-connect to my session that I use at work, I wanted to try out the external usb smart card reader feature. I ordered a cute, low cost device online and tried it out. As expected, it worked out of the box without -any- configuration. I took the device, plugged it into my minimac, started OVDC, plugged in my smartcard and I got the password screen (screensaver) to get into my sun ray session on my server at work. • Is there any place to find real-world usage-style tutorials for programming languages?

  Let's face it. When you want to learn something completely new, be it mathematics or foreign languages, it's easiest to learn when you get real world scenarios in front of you, with theory applied. For example, trigonometry can be extremely interesting when applied to creation of 2D platform games. Norwegian can be really interesting to learn if you live in Norway. When I try to look at a new programming language, I always find these steps the hardest: What tools do I need to compile and how do I do it Introduction-step: Why is this programming language so cool? Where and how is it used? (The step I am looking for, real-world scenarios) The rest, deep diving into the language, pure theory and such, is often much easier if you have completed step 1 and 2. Because now you know what it's all about, and can just read the specification when you need to. What I ask is, do you have any recommendations for places I can find such material for programming languages? Be it websites or companies selling books in this style, I'm interested. Also, I am interested in all languages. (If I had found a "real-world usage" explained for even INTERCAL, I would be interested). In some other thread here, I found a book called "Seven Languages in Seven Weeks". This is kind of what I am looking for, but I believe there must be "more like this".

  I'd like to use Markdown for documents to be exchanged with a colleague of mine. The ideal workflow would be IMHO editing the source in any plaintext editor while simultaneously viewing it in a browser. The client viewer should be able to redraw the text after each save automatically, and ideally even always switch to the most recent source file (so I don't need to navigate there manually). It'd be nice if I could (was allowed) modify the viewer a bit, things like using trailing spaces for line breaks are really terrible (I don't see them, my editor strips them, git complains about them, etc.). I'm interested in a software capable of this and easy to modify, and also in your opinions on the described workflow.

I like how it puts it terms that everyone can understand and has probably experienced at one time or another. How many times have you opened the milk, took a sniff, and experienced that visceral reaction that accompanies catching a whiff of milk that has turned to the dark side of the force? I call it Darth Vader milk. :-) Of course I’m assuming that you haven’t used IE 6 for a long time now. It is our responsibility as information technology workers to communicate to our friends and family how lame using IE 6 is. Shame them into upgrading if necessary. I don’t care how you get through to them but get through. Tell them that only losers use IE 6. Tell them you’ll cut them out of the your will. Tell them they’re banned from your annual BBQ blowout. Tell them that [insert their favorite celebrity’s name here] thinks people using IE6 are losers.  :-) Seriously, IE6 sucks and blows at the same time and has got to go for a number of reasons including the security leaks that come with using it. Confidentially, I urge them to upgrade for purely selfish reasons. Because I am the first level of computer support for waaaaaay to many of my family members I always advocate they use a current browser (IE 8 or Firefox) and anti-virus software (AVG). Call me selfish but I’d rather not waste my time dealing with a virus or malware that could potentially slip through with IE6. Yes, I’m selfish with my time that way. :-) Have a day. :-|

• Understanding and memorizing git rebase parameters

  So far the most confusing portion of git is rebasing onto another branch. Specifically, it's the command line arguments that are confusing. Each time I want to rebase a small piece of one branch onto the tip of another, I have to review the git rebase documentation and it takes me about 5-10 minutes to understand what each of the 3 main arguments should be. git rebase <upstream> <branch> --onto <newbase> What is a good rule of thumb to help me memorize what each of these 3 parameters should be set to, given any kind of rebase onto another branch? Bear in mind I have gone over the git-rebase documentation again, and again, and again, and again (and again), but it's always difficult to understand (like a boring scientific white-paper or something). So at this point I feel I need to involve other people to help me grasp it. My goal is that I should never have to review the documentation for these basic parameters. I haven't been able to memorize them so far, and I've done a ton of rebases already. So it's a bit unusual that I've been able to memorize every other command and its parameters so far, but not rebase with --onto.

• Disconnected from WiFi, Windows claims otherwise [closed]

  I'm connected via wifi to my ISP's router/modem. While Windows says that I'm always connected, I keep getting messages from Netgear Genie that I've lost contact to the Internet, and I cannot access webpages until it comes back. There are two other computers in the house, one connected to the router via ethernet, the other via wifi, both seem to have no such problems. I've wondered if Netgear genie itself was the problem, but I am regularly disconnected even if I uninstall it. And I'd rather have it since it accurently tells me if I'm connected or not. Why does windows says I'm online if I can't access any online game, or website ? I've removed the connection, recreated it, I've even copied the settings to a usb key from the computer that has wifi access. Is there a tool that can tell me which program, if any, is disconecting me ?

• UNESCO, J-ISIS, and the JavaFX 2.2 WebView

  J-ISIS, which is the newly developed Java version of the UNESCO generalized information storage and retrieval system for bibliographic information, continues to be under heavy development and code refactoring in its open source repository. Read more about J-ISIS and its NetBeans Platform basis here. But the Java integration has always produced from time to time some strange behavior (like losing the focus on the other components after clicking on the Browser window, overlapping of windows, etc.), most probably because of mixing heavyweight and lightweight components and also because of our incompetency in solving the issues. Thus, recently we changed for the JavaFX 2.2 WebWiew. The integration with Java is fine and we have got rid of all the DJ-Native Swing problems. However, we have lost some features which were given for free with the native browsers such as downloading resources in different formats and opening them in the right application. This is a pretty cool step forward, i.e., the JavaFX integration. It also confirms for me something I've heard other people saying too: the JavaFX WebView component is a perfect low threshold entry point for Swing developers feeling their way into the world of JavaFX.

• That Tool is cURLy

  When you just use IE, Firefox or Chrome it can be easy to forget that HTTP is about more then just going to check the latest tech news at Engadget. It is a full and rich protocol, and a great way to experience that richness is the powerful command line utility cURL. cURL has a lot of options, but the syntax starts out simple. You can retrieve the contents of a web page with a simple curl http://blogs.claritycon.com/. The results should be the full text of the web page, tags and all. From there, you can use X to specify the HTTP verb to use, POST, PUT, DELETE, PATCH, etc and d to specify the payload of a POST or PUT. I have found cURL to be incredibly useful for two scenarios. First, as a good way to test basic web services. Second, while working a bit with CouchDB and another document based database, cURL has helped me learn more about RESTful APIs, including different verbs and response codes. cURL is a mainstay in our environments and programming languages precisely because it is simple, powerful and discoverable. I encourage more .NET developers to take a look, bask on the command line for a while and enjoy the plain text of the web. • BSOD when playing Portal 2 using ATI Radeon 4800 on H61M/U3S3 mobo

  playing Portal 2 will always give me blue screen of death, usually after about 10 minutes of playing. BSOD references atikmpag.sys. I have tried several updates for graphics driver and through ATI Catalyst Center. I have updated the motherboard BIOS. My RAM is OK. Nothing changes. I had previously run the game fine, then I removed my video card to use on-board graphics once, and after re-installing the video card, I get this problem every time.   When I turn the computer on this error always happens wher jus after it starts up this screen pops up wher it says F1 to enter BIOS setup or F2 to start Windows Normally and if I press F2 it goes into Windows but freezez then I hav 2 turn the pc off, Problem is the BIOS + Date and Time keeps resetting itself somehow and it's not the battery because I put a new one in so when I manage 2 load default settings and get it working after some struggle and I shut down the pc the next day I switch the pc on and does the whole process again... What could this problem be and how can I fix it??? Thank you

• Fast, reliable data transfers from/to China

  We are a small company and we will need to transfer rather large amounts of data (10GB+ each time) between Europe and China in the near future. As many may have experienced, Internet connections to or from China can be rather unreliable and slow at times without any apparent reason. For example, while sending data to China via FTP generally works well, it can be painfully slow in the other direction. Currently, we are investigating new ways to have high transfer rates in both directions. So far we have tried: FTP (see above) FTP over VPN services (generally slower than direct connections) F2F (like Retroshare or Freenet - slow!!) Aspera (fast but expensive!) BitTorrent (unreachable end nodes, b/c of firewalls which we must not configure) We would like to try: Cloud storage (e.g. Amazon S3, Google Storage) - are those services always and reliably reachable from inside China? Point-to-Point VPN (currently not possible, b/c of the network, see above) I'd be especially grateful to hear from people who have already dealt with this kind of problem before.

However, mentally, at least partly, I'm in Moscow, at JavaOne Moscow, 17 & 18 April. http://www.oracle.com/javaone/ru-en/index.html I'm doing two items there, thankfully on the first day, I always think the sooner the better: Tuesday 12:30 - 13:15 -- Unlocking the Java EE 6 Platform (in the Keynote Hall) Tuesday 16:30 - 18:15 -- Rapid Corporate Desktop Development (in HOL Room) Several speakers I'm looking forward to seeing there include Bert Ertman who will be talking about Spring/Java EE 6 migration, Dalibor Topic talking about Lambda expressions in JDK 8, Arun Gupta with his Java EE 6 HOL (appears to be a partial overlap with my session), and various others. And I hope I will make it to Angela Caicedo's HOL on JavaFX. The whole program, which is available via the link above, indicates that many (dare I say "most"?) of the sessions will be using NetBeans in one way or another. Looks like it will be a great conference.

• Server reboots every 4.5-5.5 minutes...

  Hi, I've recently installed a server in colocation, and my server is rebooting every 4.5-5.5 minutes. Regardless of the OS I run, it reboots. I have all ECC memory in the server, so it should correct errors if there is a bad bit in the memory, right? It's weird because it always happens about 4.5-5.5 minutes after bootup. My motherboard is a Supermicro X8DTL-iF. I read on a blog that another person had the problem, and supermicro recommended to do a BIOS update. Is this the right course of action?

  I'm playing with orbits in a simple 2-d game where a ship flies around in space and is attracted to massive things. The ship's velocity is stored in a vector and acceleration is applied to it every frame as appropriate given Newton's law of universal gravitation. The point masses don't move (there's only 1 right now) so I would expect an elliptical orbit. Instead, I see this: I've tried with nearly circular orbits, and I've tried making the masses vastly different (a factor of a million) but I always get this rotated orbit. • Does Win 7 still requires copying all files over before burning to a DVD-R or BD-R?

  It seems that Win 7 still needs to copy all files over to a folder, before it burns all files to the DVD-R or BD-R? I think since XP or Vista, Windows always copy everything over to a temporary folder before it will burn to an empty DVD-R. So if you just want to burn a 4GB file to an empty DVD-R, it will first make a copy of that file, and then burn it, instead of just burning it without making a copy first. And now on Win 7, it seems like it is the case also? Most other 3rd party burning tools won't make an extra copy of the files first... Win 7 is the exception. Is there a way around it? (to avoid copying over 25GB or 50GB of data before burning)

• Windows Mobile deletes my Contacts when deleting a partnership

  Sometimes when I reinstall my PC get a new Work PC or buy a new home PC ,ActiveSync, now the Device Center asks me to delete an existing partnership to setup a partnership with the new PC, since only two partnerships are allowed. When I delete that partnership all contacts that originally came from that partnership get deleted too. How can I prevent that from happening. Do I really always have to remember to frequently backup all my contacts in a safe place? How much redundancy is needed. I hat them on one of my PCs and on my phone.

• Git for Application Settings

  I use a lot of tools at work and at home, and im constantly tweaking them in one location or the other. It's somewhat common practice for people to use Git to version their .vim, .vimrc, and other . files, since you can host your config files on github and have the share-ability and all the other advantages that implies. Being able to version and branch my configs sounds like a grand idea, since I'm always messing about with them. I'd like to discuss the best practice for doing this on a slightly wider scope. How would you implement it? Have your configfiles repo in ~/Library/Configs or similar, and symlink the appropriate files? How to handle preference files for Applications, ie iTerm2. These files are recreated every time, so you'd have to symlink 'backwards' and put a link in the repo? rather than symlinking to the repo, since it would just delete the symlink.

• Bejeweled-like game, managing different gem/powerup behaviors?

  I thought I'd ask a question and look forward to some insight from this very compelling community. In a Bejeweled-like (Match 3) game, the standard behavior once a valid swap of two adjacent tiles is made is that the resulting matching tiles are destroyed, any tiles now sitting over empty spaces fall to the position above the next present-tile, and any void created above is filled with new tiles. In richer Match-3 games like Bejeweled, 4 in a row (as opposed to just 3) modifies this behavior such that the tile that was swapped is retained, turned into a "flaming" gem, it falls, and then the empty space above is filled. The next time that "flaming gem" is played it explodes and destroys the 8 perimeter tiles, triggers a different animation sequence (neighbors of those 8 tiles being destroyed look like they've been hit by a shockwave then they fall to their respective positions). Scoring is different, the triggered sounds are different, etc. There are even more elaborate behaviors for Match5, Match-cross-pattern, and many powerups that can be purchased, each which produces a more elaborate sequence of events, sounds, animations, scoring, etc... What is the best approach to developing all these different behaviors that respond to players' "move" and her current "performance" and that deviate from the standard sequence of events, scoring, animation, sounds etc, in such a way that we can always flexibly introduce a new "powerup" ? What we are doing now is hard-coding the events of each one, but the task is long and arduous and seems like the wrong approach especially since the game-designers and testers often offer (later) valuable insight on what works better in-game, which means that the code itself may have to be re-written even for minor changes in behavior (say, destroy only 7 neighboring tiles, instead of all 8 in an explosion). ANY pointers for good practices here would be highly appreciated.
