  • How to fix winlogon.exe randomly crashing/hanging my computer?

    I've got these problems: 1) sometimes winlogon.exe crashes at boot-up and my whole computer shuts off once i click "no" to visual-studio-2008 just-in-time-debugger window, takes about 30 secs until my harddrives starts up again, its really scary, i am afraid it is causing hardware malfunctions in long term. this has happened dozen of time now. 2) sometimes i leave the computer alone a while, i come back and i notice ctrl+alt+del doesnt work and winlogon.exe is using 100% of one of my 4 cores.

  • When does a cached website refresh?

    If i go to example.com [placeholder for different website] it creates the numerous cache entries in the browser for different items on the page and two entries for example.com. One of which expires in 1.5hrs and the other has 'No expiration time.' What I am wondering is: when does the browser display the cached page and when does it get the newest version from the server (when re-visiting the site)? What do the two different expiration times for the top level domain mean? A web page I went to was temporarily redirecting to a different page. After it was back up, I was still getting redirected to the temp page even though the correct page was up. Would this have eventually resolved itself based on expiration times or does the cache need to be cleared?

  • What app can i use to track disk space?

    I dont know what is going on but my disk space seems to be going down and i am not downloading anything. What app can i use on windows to keep track of diskspace? I used windirstat which tells you how much data a folder is holding but i still cant figure out the problem. I did notice a folder holding 1.7gb for visual studio's intellitrack (or whatever that thing is called)

  • (Possibly) Corrupted DDCrypt self-decrypting file

    I recently discovered some files I had encrypted and archived on a CD using DDCrypt 2.0, which is a small encryption utility from back in the day. One of its functions is to create self-decrypting files, which are essentially EXE files that you can enter a password and then have the file extracted onto your filesystem. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get them to do this properly. They appear to be decrypting and then at the last moment I get the error: Error opening encrypted file C:\users\username\Temp\dde3cfa.tmp Reason: Success and then another dialog immediately says Error extracting ddc file. I'm not really sure what this means (certainly not success), but I've checked out the temporary file and it appears to be garbage data (although of the right file size). I don't know if anyone has an idea what might be done here to extract the files, or has dealt with a similar situation before. Any ideas are appreciated! Thank you in advance for your time and any help you can provide.

  • Why do firewire drives on Mac OS cause processes to go into uninterruptible wait?

    I have a Western Digital My Passport Studio external hard drive. It works with either Firewire 800 or USB 2.0. I've noticed that when I have it connected to Firewire, after a few hours, processes on my Mac start to go into an uninterruptible wait state. Eventually the system becomes so hard locked that I can't even shut it down. I have Spotlight indexing of the drive disabled, and the mds process seems to be the one that triggers this eventual system collapse.

  • Is there a way to snapshot a running process to disk to restore it later?

    I usually work with a lot of instances of visual studio open to different projects, I was wondering if there is a way to snapshot/hibernate a running process to disk instead of closing it so that I can open it in the same state as it was quickly. I have a ton of free disk space so wouldn't mind saving the entire process snapshot if it would save me the time in opening up the solution and waiting for the projects to load.

  • My CPU hits 100°C... Help me!

    The safe limit for processors is typically 50°C or so, but I have found that my CPU likes to do up to 100°C. I have got these readings from SpeedFan 4.42. I have a Intel Quad Core unclocked. I am using the standard intel fan with heatsink that came with the prossesor My case is a Cooler Master and I have two fans installed on the case. I took the side off to see if that helped. It lowered the temp be 3C. I don't really want to blow the processor and I don't know how to cool it down.

  • i7 4770k or i7 4930k - Which for faster compile times? [on hold]

    I've looked up comparisons and found that single core performance seems to be better on i7 4770k, but has less cores that the i7 4930k. Would VS take advantage of extra cores when compiling, or would the difference be negible. I'm looking to buy the PC primarily for programming, so which would be better for visual studio? I already have the rest of my build ready, I just need to decide on this! :) thanks

  • Script to restart server when no user is remotely connected

    I'm looking for something special : here is a windows server that is used for development by 4/5 people remotely working on it through remote control. I'm installing Visual Studio 2010 on it, and the installation won't continue until the server has been restarted. I'm looking for a way to reboot when the server is idle (when nobody is connected through remote desktop on it) so that the reboot doesn't bug anyone. Is there some software that can do that ? Thanks !

    I need a little advise, I need to sync a DB that is currently on a Server 2008(SQL Server 2005) machine and I use Studio Express to connect to it. I need a way of syncing this DB to mysql that lives on a NAS on the same network: Local: DB Engine on server, named, server\sqlexpress and IP = 10.0.0.201 Target: DB on NAS, named, CISCO-NAS and IP = 10.0.0.182 Will need for this to sync every few mins... I really don't know how to start.

  • Files apperaring/disappering from folder on share

    Windows Server 2008 R2 I have a folder H:\temp\folderName where H: is a file share under ADS on the server. I have "Full Control" permission on the folder. I can open the folder and see a file and/or a folder that is supposed there. If I try to drag/drop or Copy/Paste the file I get an error "Could not find this item. This is no longer in ...." But I can still see the file. Similar issue occur at command prompt. I cannot delete the folder. Delete actions run w/o error but the folder is still present. I was able to rename the folder. My guess is there are some cross link issues. Or? Does anyone recognize this syndrome? What is the proper next step to verify the file share?

  • Someone to clarify /tags and /branches in SVN (subversion)?

    I created folders /tags, /branches and /trunk on SVN server. I put initial project file into /trunk. But other folders confuses me. What should I put in /tags? I see most people do not ever use this folder. Is this like a temp folder or so? As I understood, the purpose of branches is to host a different versions. So I will have /branches/myapp_v1.0.0, /branches/myapp_v1.0.1, etc. Right? If this is true, how do I "tell" subversion tool (tortoise on windows, svn on linux) to upload project files into such and such folder?

  • How to debug manifest errors?

    I am creating an application that depends on third-party library, which in turn depends on MSVCP90D.dll (it was compiled with debug symbols). While starting the application it fails to start and provides an error message: I have found such library in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\Debug_NonRedist\amd64\Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT and C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\Debug_NonRedist\x86\Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT. As you can see one of them is 64-bit, while the other is 32-bit. When I have placed 32-bit into the directory of the application the application silently crashes while loading (log from Visual Studio Output window is below). With the 32-bit one I get another error message: If I press Abort -- programs shuts down, Retry results in breaking into debug session for crt0msg.c file. This is system file and I have no idea how to debug it. If I press Ignore I get yet another error message: So the question is how to debug such errors? Please give me some links where I can read more about it or point me out what exactly I should do in such cases. I know this relates to manifest problems -- please give me a good resource where I can read about resources, since what I have found have confused me even more. Model.Value.ToShortDateString() : string.Empty))%> I used LinqToSql designer to create my model from an sql database. The message displayed is the one returned from the db ie "The value '32/4/1967' is not valid for DateOfBirth.". I tried to enter some break points around the code, and found out that the "value" in attribute is always null when the date is incorrect, but always gets a value if the date is in correct format. The same ( value == null) is passed also in the code generated by the designer. This thing is driving me nuts. Please can anyone help me deal with this? Also if someone can tell me where exactly is the point of entry from the view to the database. Is it related to the model binder? because i wanted to check exactly what value is passed once i press the "submit" button. Thank you.
